Art or Vandalism?
May 11, 2015 7:52 AM - InsertSnappyNameHere
A graffiti artist recently used a drone to paint on a large, elevated advertising billboard here in NYC. Feeling proud of his work, Katsu, the graffiti artist, gave an interview about it.
"In an interview with Motherboard last year, he told us why decided to hook a spray can together with a DJI Phantom drone as a way to blend technology and artistic creation.
“I really want to look into the way that a person and a drone could connect,” he said. “I thought, ‘I could go out into the city and spray paint using a drone wherever I wanted to, in basically unreachable spots and in unusable areas.’” buying it? Or is this just vandalism? What are your thoughts on graffiti in general?

I believe in property rights.

Actually, I modify my answer.

Art and vandalism are not mutually exclusive, so it could very well be both.
However, I think art is a very shitty excuse for vandalism with zero legal standing.

What Scott said @ 8:45.

Hello Scott, great to see you.

Hi Scott, we missed you and RC last Tuesday!

Life has been pretty overwhelming the last month or so, and on top of everything else I had a corporate training last week where I had to stay in a hotel in Manhattan.
Tuesday night there was an evening where spouses were invited, so RC made the journey to hang out with me in midtown.

Scott, no pressure from me, or us (I am sure). Hope things are getting better all the time.

190 bowery - thoughts?

(worth noting the owner lives there and allows / encourages people to tag the bldg)

i think graffiti helps give industrial bushwick some character. i think most things in this slide show are "art"
May 11, 2015 7:29 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
horrible. i wouldn't want to live there. i'd actually be ashamed to tell people that's my building. a nice, large graffiti mural is one thing, but tagging stupid shit like "neck face" (remember him?!) or other stuff is just junky and dumb.
May 11, 2015 7:33 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
hmmm...yes, the link you posted is art for the most part. i hate to think that i'm judging art vs. graffiti as what's pretty and orderly looking vs. messy and not definable. but i probably am. well that's rather crappy of me!

yeah - i agree - i usually judge on a case by case basis. i can't imagine subway cars with any graffiti on them - now cars supposedly get immediately taken out of service if there's any tagging done.

I think 190 Bowery recently sold for shit ton of money, and all the "art" was removed. I think also, if I recall correctly, they used to try to remove the graffiti, then gave up, as it was futile, and encouraged it. The guy that just sold is an artist, and lived there since the 70s.

I'm sure you saw this, dh, but since we were talking about it: you can tour 190 Bowery this Saturday from 5-8.

Yes! I saw that and an pondering going. I've been sorta following that building since I read the exposé in the WSJ back in like 08. Spent a lot of time around there back then and was fascinated by it

There used to be a similar bldg covered in graffiti on the corner of spring and Elizabeth that was converted 5 years ago to lux condos (only 3 in the whole bldg ) - never any lights on in them.

190 bowery: evidently Sat is the opening, but couldn't find anywhere how long the exhibit will go
I agree with bhs, also.
for that bushwick graffiti, an article said that someone gets the permission of the property owners before they are painted - very different situation than when someone just tags random properties.
Here's a pic of the retaining wall of my bldg when I moved in - NOT art!

Also, pics of a bedroom in the apt of an art collector. creepy little people in the middle of the room which I guess is considered art. and a tall pink plastic column. not my taste!

I am CLUELESS when it comes to knowing what is art, and what isn't!

Stoops, an apartment in your building was advertised on the FGKids Yahoogroup (for parents in FG and Clinton Hill):

Listing agent is someone's mother. And boy has she gotten quite a few big listings lately.
