Pep, is that snow on the roofs of those buildings? What's the temp? Has Spring not quite yet sprung?

Yeah, it's snow. But that's a google photo. It's 63 right now. Spring has definitely sprung here!

Yeah, I'm relieved too. Although it gets really, really chilly at night and in the shade; it's very dry here.

The lamb was great. 2 kilos for 3 of us. Served with roasted potatoes and a salad. Yum.

There are very few things I agree with Obama on but this is one of them and applaud him for standing up to Elizabeth Warren and Harry Reid, the two head crazies...

I don't use Uber, and this story on Gothamist re: 16k incorrect charge is absurd. Arecibo has been terrific over the past week or so. Nice cars, really nice drivers, decent fares, quick response time. I'm sticking with them.
#15
April 22, 2015 7:19 AM - dibs
Not sure what the 16k issue is. Maybe you could have posted the link.

NYC is virtually the only city in the country to have a big black car network. Uber will do fine wherever they are. If this is some bizarre anecdotal story (you could have provided a link) who cares. Lots of bad taxi and black car stories out there

Mystery Trader Armed With Algorithms Rewrites Flash Crash

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-04-22/mystery-trader-armed-with-algorithms-rewrites-flash-crash-story
Navinder Singh Sarao was as anonymous as they come -- little more than a day trader by the standards of the Street.

He is not a Chosenite, too bad.

On Wednesday, Sarao appeared in London court, telling Judge Quentin Purdy that he will fight the U.S. extradition request.

I thought the "Lone Gunman" thing was a thing of the past, dusting off the JFK Playbook.

"Sarao didn’t cause the flash crash single-handedly, authorities say. Nonetheless, Tuesday’s developments fly in the face of the prevailing narratives of what happened. Regulators initially concluded that a mutual fund company -- said to be Waddell & Reed Financial Inc. of Overland Park, Kansas -- played a leading role. Many in the industry countered that a confluence of several forces, including high-frequency trading, was probably behind the crash."

If you can't buy a scapegoat, you damn sure can make one.

I wonder if there another Flash Crash on the horizon...

FBI reportedly overstated forensic hair matches in most trials before 2000
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/04/19/fbi-reportedly-overstated-forensic-hair-matches-in-most-trials-before-2000/?intcmp=latestnews

The Justice Department and FBI have reportedly acknowledged that nearly every examiner in the FBI Laboratory’s microscopic hair comparison unit gave flawed testimony in almost all trials where they offered evidence against criminal defendants over more than 20-year period before 2000.

Let us rise for the National Anthem.

"The cases include those of 32 defendants sentenced to death; of those, 14 have been executed or died in prison, the Post reported in a story posted on its website."

Oh my bad Dude, Um you're dead, oh well.

The FBI errors alone do not mean there was not other evidence of a convict's guilt, the Post said. Defendants and federal and state prosecutors in 46 states and the District of Columbia are being notified to determine whether there are grounds for appeals, according to the newspaper. Four defendants were previously exonerated.

Sodomite may refer to:
A person who practices sodomy
A resident of Sodom

Sodomy (/ˈsɒdəmi/) is generally anal or oral sex between people or sexual activity between a person and a non-human animal (bestiality), but may also include any non-procreative sexual activity.

I hardly consider that an attack.

Unusually rude people on subway this morning. Woman with *huge* fucking baby carriage, right *in* the doorway of the F train. Refused to budge, everyone had to go around. 'Nother woman crushed herself between me and the person in front of me on the escalator. 'Nother woman smacked me pretty hard with her backpack, walking on sidewalk. She got a bit of a surprise though, the rebound spun her around a bit.

One of these days I may just abandon courtesy, stop making room for those smaller than me, stop allowing women and the elderly to take my spot, stop worrying about whether my bookbag is inconveniencing anyone, and just start pushing my way around, crushing small people, hip-checking morons out of subway doors, and shoving people's backpacks out of the way. Don't even get me started on short people with umbrellas, I'm just gonna yank it out of their hands and toss it into the street.

Huh. Street-sweepers not bad, but for real fun give me a Zamboni and some liquor!!!

LP,
You are nauseating sometimes with your patronizing attitude towards gays.

I will point to the fact that about two months ago the What posted a series of memes showing Catholic priests and bishops as pedophiles. It was clearly meant to provoke me. I can deal with it, and if I have something to say to the What, I'll say it. I'm a big boy, as I'm sure DIBS is. As I recall, no one asked the What to stop posting them.

What interests me is how you and others feel the need to censor to protect your favored cause. And by the way, how would you characterize that story you told me of the old Italian ladies who prayed on their "Vatican-issued" glass bead rosaries for revenge. Let's be clear: that story was complete bullshit, made up by you to try to press my buttons, and throw in a religious slur to do so. As I told you at the time, there is just no way that type of person would have confided to you their deepest prayers, nor had you any way to know that a rosary was "Vatican-issued".

"this is interesting.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/21/opinion/a-danger-on-rails.html"

I've been warning about this for what seems like a long time, the real downside of *not* building the Keyspan pipeline.

Like I've said, it should be a no-brainer, the phenomenally huge increase in rail transport of oil poses a much greater environmental danger than a pipeline would.

And those fucking fracking companies should disclose their fracturing ingredients and clean up whatever mess they make.

Whatever, Man....

Randi that's nice in theory but all those were already tried of course. Rf, they haven't figured out how to connect the Blackberry to the cloud (yet).
April 22, 2015 11:10 AM - BirdnestHead
You're right, that's not impossible. It may be a huge pain in the ass, but it's not impossible.
No, I don't know precisely how one would do that, but in general, 2 steps:
1) Get the data.
2) Transform the data.

Getting the data may consist of up/downloading it somewhere, e-mailing it somewhere, or dissecting the Blackberry itself and getting it off an internal chip.

Transforming it is probably easier than getting the data, there are many FOSS file format converters. If it's in some sort of bizarro proprietary Blackberry format, it may be difficult/expensive to find software that will convert it.

Just my 2 cents.

"Who do you think finances most businesses in the US???"

One of these days, maybe 10 or 20 or 30 years from now, some company is going to discover that they don't need so many layers of middlemen. They'll start issuing stock directly from their website. Then others will do it. Then some municipality will experiment with directly issuing bonds. Then someone else. Then some direct loans. Some one will figure out Napster for PayPal. A viable virtual currency will form.

The entire Financial Services Industry will find themselves right where the Music Industry was ten years ago: obsolete and expensive.

Lobbyists will howl. Legislation will pass. Innocent people will no longer be innocent.

"Brokers" will become unemployable, as no one will be willing to pay commissions on stock transactions, or loan bundling.

Since there is no way to really verify the integrity of anything on the Internet, it will not matter whether anyone is telling the truth or not, much as it already doesn't in today's financial markets, and no one will expect the truth any more. Billions of imaginary dollars will appear and disappear at random, much as they do today.

The world will realize that the entire Financial Service Industry is nothing more than a bunch of aggregators, middlemen, bookies, and loansharks, that it adds nothing of any real value that can't be added better and cheaper without them.

April 22, 2015 12:18 PM - Deleted
I believe that brokers, and anyone involved in distribution, play a valuable role in the economy. The internet represents another means of distribution. Some folks will use it, others won't. There are downsides to using brokers, just as there is a downside to shopping via the internet. The internet has taken the place of catalogue shopping, which took the country by storm 100 years ago.

Brokers will remain.

Don't bring me up unless you are ready to get beat down, Benson. I happen to be one of the few people here who admit to strong religious beliefs, and I'm not ashamed to say it. However, there is a fast difference from commenting on the actions of people who would deny others equal rights, or even life itself, in the name of whatever small god they believe in, and making fun of the Catholic Church, or any other religious institution. I have NEVER made fun of the Church, here, or anywhere else. I defy you to find any instance where I have. I will never make fun of people practicing their religion, no matter how I feel about that practice.

However, I will deride, ridicule and heap great amounts of scorn on people who use God as a POLITICAL and religious football. I will continue to call out religious bigotry, and rank evil done in the name of Jesus, God, Allah, or Jehovah. These people, with their narrow minded, selfish, bigoted, ignorant, and frankly evil ideas of who and what they, and therefore their deity, will accept, and their insistence that we should live in a theocracy are not representatives of the same God I believe in.

If you can't handle it, too bad.

And I'm really sick of the sodomy name calling, too. Enough already.

http://gothamist.com/2015/04/22/bushwick_colony_gentrification.php

Over 100 protesters gathered outside of the "Bohemian" luxury apartments at Colony 1209 on DeKalb Avenue in Bushwick yesterday to protest the 421-a tax abatement program, which incentivizes private developers to build residential housing in exchange for tax abatements. The program is up for renewal this June.
Colony, which started accepting tenant applications last April, received a 15-year 421-a tax abatement worth $8 million, according to advocacy group Make the Road. But despite receiving taxpayer subsidies, none of its apartments are below market-rate. (Which, in Brooklyn, seems to be par for the course. A study last year found that in the 61 Brooklyn buildings receiving 421-a subsidies, only 6% of apartments rented below market rate.)
Maria Contez, a resident of Bed-Stuy for 30 years, attended the protest in solidarity with Bushwick residents. "I'm here now because I suffer from gentrification," she said. "We lost Bedford-Stuyvesant, we lost Williamsburg, and now I am fighting for the people in Bushwick. We are low-income people, and we have rights. But they do the law for rich people."

1. It's called Project Fi.
2. It starts at $20 a month. For that price, you get unlimited calls and texting in your country along with Wi-Fi tethering. International service is available, but it's going to cost you extra.
3. You pay more for data, but only what you use. You can select various amounts of data for different prices. ($20 for 2 GB, $30 for 3 GB, etc.) But if you don't use all your allotted data, you get refunded the difference on your next bill.
4. You need a Nexus 6. For the time being, the service only works on Google's flagship Android phone. If you don't already own one, you'll have to buy it from Google (for $649) when you sign up.
5. No contracts. But they won't pay for you to break your current contract.
6. It piggybacks on the Sprint and T-Mobile LTE networks. In addition to using Wi-Fi hotspots, the network gives you access to cell towers from both companies nationwide.
7. It will switch between cellular and Wi-Fi networks seamlessly. If you start a call using Wi-Fi, and then go outside, your phone will switch to the cellular network without dropping the call.
8. It also works on your computer and tablets. Calls, texts, and voicemails can all be sent via Google Hangouts no matter what device you're using.
9. You need to request an invite.
10. It works in most of the country. Go here to see if your neighborhood is covered.

not sure why it closed....whether not making money or the threat of property going up for sale. It is such a dead block now - with supermarket gone, ceol closed, spice has almost no business , a construction site for a pizza place which has been under construction for couple years, and the bodega looking dreary as ever.
BTW Cobble, -- that place on Bergen just west of Smith now open again....and again as a pizza place.

I'm sure what would love to tell you why it closed.

I love those blocks of State from Smith to Flatbush. So eclectic and interesting, but as peaceful as any "prime brownstone" blocks. I walk it often, and rarely see much traffic. And the jail is no biggie, in my experience. Couldn't speak to parking.

I suspect that of no one told me that building was the HOD, I never would have known.

I just noticed that this past weekend when we drove by. I think that space is difficult to make cozy. Hope the pizza is good, but do we really need more fancy pizza here?
April 22, 2015 7:03 PM - dibs
The pasta fagioli. Grated pecorino really tops it off nicely

I imagine you are talking about the asking of $13m for 2 parcels, What. At least they didn't get and renting out space again.
To me it sounded like lets just pick a random number and see if anyone bites.

Isnt at least 2 years for the stupid construction for the pizza on Smith, cobble next to old Met? Do people really make money
when site is vacant, they spend so much enlarging and another pizza place that will be out of biz in 6 months because won't be able to pay the rent?

If it's a vanity business bank-rolled by mommy and daddy which MANY MANY MANY small businesses in New Brooklyn are then yeah renovations go on and on and on and on, then maybe a soft opening (aka renovation party), then back to more renovations and cashing checks. Pop that shit.
April 22, 2015 7:28 PM - petebklyn
I don't know who is financing -- but renovation style of building looks much like old brooklyn. or at least what old brooklyn thinks is new and nice.

Could be, I haven't been paying close attention. Still irritated that Met Food is gone!

I don't understand it. Why was 16 Handles empty for so long? It's all kind of nuts. Then I see beautiful homes being re-gutted and renovated for what must be astronomical sums. And then 5 or so years later...all over again! Don't ask me...I just live here! ; )
April 22, 2015 7:42 PM - petebklyn
that is what I thought about this listing near me facing Gowanus Houses. Some hasidim from w'burg bought it in Dec. for $1.7ish ----was not listed on open market so not sure how he got it. Turned around next day and listed for $2.7m -- now reduced to $2.5m. Hoping to make quick big bucks but not smart enough to realize just because in that neighborhood not going to find buyer at that price that wants a picture window of projects and tons of work to do.

I don't get that either. The less wealthy will suffer, not the wealthy - they 'tend' to stay that way no matter what the markets do. 'Cry' as they may.

Catching up....I'd give my left foot to live in one of those modern townhouses on State Street. They are the epitome of elegance in modern design and the block is nice. Things will only get batter as they develop the area around it.

I saw something the other day that made me think beards are on the way out. I mean aside from BnH shaving his beard off. (But he does that every Spring.)

Oh, I know! It was some story about how long beards, like the beardos wear, are unhealthy! I can't remember where I saw it.
