This is not new news but the story on the Today Show now about sledding injuries and the multi million dollar lawsuits against towns and how they are forcing towns to ban sledding on public property is a great example of what is wrong with America.

"We need a decent storm that drops at ;east a foot of snow."

Be careful what you wish for, it can still happen. We've had big snows in late March, and I recall one in early April once.

From reading the eagle comments, I've learned there are other cams around. Many are following several nests. Currently on a cam in MN, some gruesome shit has occurred. This can go from sweet and fluffy to bloody and gross pretty quickly.

Today is the 100th anniversary of Frank Sinatra's birthday. Nancy doesn't look very good. But, I recently saw an ad on TV for Frank Sinatra, Jr. singing at some NJ casino. I didn't even know there was a Frank Sinatra, Jr. and no mention of him on the Today Show about Old Blue Eyes.

Yes that and other stuff. The couple had 3 chicks. Two were strong, one struggled. They stopped feeding the non-viable chick. Chick died. They fed if to the others. All so very matter of fact in the wild. These crazy people keep talking about how cold, how bored, how happy the eagle look at any given times. Anthropomorphizing.

Just met with the dog walker. Part of the reason the dog walking service we've been using dropped park slope is because there's been a lot of theft from a couple of the dog walkers. Thank god I've got nothing worth stealing but a bunch of dusty old video games. My roommate says he has nothing to steal either. That sorta makes me sad on some level lol. I wonder if the nannies are looting the tards around here too? Probably. A silver spoon here, a vibrator there!

benson…a lot cheaper than hotels, especially in cities wherte the taxes on top of the room rate are high.

March 7, 2015 11:01 AM - Deleted
I don't think it was a cause and effect, like not the reason. They didn't think they were making enough money in park slope, there's more money to be made in williamsburg apparently were the answers from the dog walking service itself. I can't say I blame them, 95% of the dogs in park slope kinda suck and you just know these people probably have nanny cams set up. (i would never do that.) Do whatever you want in my apartment, just don't poop -- that's my only rule.

Do you think she'll report it on her taxes, like the nannies you complain about?
March 7, 2015 11:46 AM - Deleted
Well she doesn't have kids of her own so whether she pays taxes or not on her earnings doesn't concern me. It's people with kids who have jobs off the books and still getting government benefits that I frown upon. And there is nothing wrong with frowning upon that. However, I do realize our welfare system is messed up and benefits max out when one makes 11 dollars an hour. Sometimes making just one more dollar an hour would cause someone to lose benefits, for which they would then need to make 38 dollars an hour (!) to break even. Our system supports and maintains all this shadiness that our genitals cause.

We're not thrilled with our upstairs neighbor. He (or his kids, who he has part time custody of) keep leaving the front door open. His apt was robbed last week, as apparently he leaves his apt. door unlocked as well. Plus, he's really not very friendly.
March 7, 2015 2:05 PM - petebklyn

In these small buildings it's a real pita when you have a crappy neighbor. And shame on him and his kids for not locking doors.
March 7, 2015 2:12 PM - pepper
Yes. There are only 3 apts in building. It's weird having 1/3 of us barely acknowledge the others. None of us are friends, but when the previous tenants were there, all 3 apts looked out for the building and each other. It just makes things far less pleasant.
March 7, 2015 2:12 PM - Cobble B. Hiller

People in my building are unfriendly, but I don't mind. They're not my types anyway. Poor neighbors are usually friendlier but they often bring a host of other problems to the table and I ain't looking for that these days. I LOVED my three days in the woods last week.
March 7, 2015 2:33 PM - Deleted

Edited at March 7, 2015 2:33 PM
March 7, 2015 2:36 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
We don't need to be bffs, just "hello" and "how are you" in the hallway is fine. The old neighbors would a) never look at us, or look us in the eye, or b) say 'hello' without us forcing them to...which became a game for us - to see if we could get them to speak more than that. BnH got the guy to say a few words a couple times, but the wife never would.

It's not that he's not locking it - it self-locks. He's not closing it, so it just sits wide open - on Atlantic Ave! The door sucks, and is hard to close, I'll give him that much. But the rest of us manage to do it. There are 3 signs on the door reminding people to make sure it is closed - 1 placed by us, the other 2 by the downstairs neighbors, who are now working with the landlord to try and get a new front door.

Regarding social awkwardness and such: I could write a treatise on this topic, and it fits into a much larger theme that's been written about by authors like Todd Putnam, Charles Murray and even the late business writer turned sociologist, Peter Drucker. The latter probably put it best when he said that what the US needs most is a greater social structure. We used to have a lot more formal social structures, everything from bridge clubs to volunteer fire departments to fraternal clubs, to informal structures. With regard to the latter, I can remember this from my childhood.

I've said it before: one of the reasons I like to go on cruises with Princess lines is that they try to hold on to this tradition. We always have dinner at a table of eight or so, and for two hours you dine, not eat. No distractions, just conversation, usually with a cross-section of people. On the recent cruise, we had a couple from Maine, a couple from St. Louis, a couple from England and ourselves. All were great company.

Six,

I recommend that you spend some time reading NY YIMBY. Almost every week they highlight a new development of non-subsidized low and middle income housing in places like the Bronx, East NY and Far Rockaway. The main issue constricting supply is the lack of developable properties, and that ties right to the city's policies.

As long as she is alert and the fever doesn't go any higher, that sounds fine. Even if it is roseola, there are no meds they can give for it. My kid (aside from the fact that she was my first baby! we were in a foreign country! she was in the middle of a gigantic transition, losing everything familiar she ever knew!) needed something because she started wheezing. In a horror movie, you would now take the fork from him, and slam it tine-first through the back of his hand and into the top of the bar! You can either go over-the-top-maniac, with shrieks and grimaces, or icy cold and polite, with a wink and a smile, possibly adding a bad pun.

So I finally went to see "American Sniper" today. After having seen it, the reaction to it from some quarters is even more amazing to me. In many respects, the movie gives the "left's" POV plenty of airtime, and indeed can be taken to be anti-war:

-one of the strongest levels on which the movie works is to show that no matter how lofty the goals of the Iraqi war may have been (to some), the reality of it came down to American soldiers fighting an urban war in which they have to barge into people's homes with guns drawn, which is ultimately counter-productive.
-it shows American soldiers drawn into untenable situations, such as having to shoot women and children.
-it shows a number of vets disillusioned with the war. One of Kyle's best friends believes the whole thing is futile and there is no moral clarity in it. At his funeral, his mother reads his last letter which lambastes the war. Kyle's own brother, who also served, is shown as completely disillusioned with it, and wants to just get out.
-it shows that the burden of the war falls disproportionally on the vets, in terms of the type of warfare they must engage in, the strain on their family life and their coming home to a country disconnected from the fight.

So you may ask: why the visceral reaction to the movie from some quarters? I believe the key is the main character himself: Kyle. He is shown to be resolute. He believes in the cause and despite the things he witnesses (listed above) he remains steadfast. He does not equivocate and believes in its moral clarity.
