The PoTD is red twig dogwood. I've never heard of it before.

I hear a particular Spring bird singing it's song this morning for the first time!

Too many last night, delepp?

Gardening is a great hobby, I'm hoping I live long enough to get to do some more.

"For years it seemed the murder rate couldn’t go any lower, but it just kept on dropping and dropping. Now the City reports it’s up 20 percent since the beginning of the year, vs. the same period in 2014. "

Most of the violence took place in only five of the City’s 77 police precincts, including three in Brooklyn: the 67th, 63rd and 75th precincts — aka Flatbush, Flatlands and East New York.

Shootings were also up 20 percent, reported the Daily News. There have been 149 shootings so far this year, vs. 126 during the same period in 2014.

so when the new site launches are we going to have the OT be public or private? it sounds like scott built it so that certain threads can only be seen by registered users. why not go incognito? people can still email to join if they want to (they won't, but still).

"14 BEERS ON TAP, ALL CRAFT"

An ignorant policy. Don't they understand that those of us who detest craft beers usually have more money to spend. Short sighted policy to purposely create an unwelcome atmosphere for a large segment of the customer base. Henry St Ale House bartender told me they actually realized this and offer a broader range of ales and lagers now.

Taxi Medallions are down 30% according to a friend of mine who has green cabs and Uber cars. He said green cabs are dead now too. No one wants to buy them. Best now is Uber for investment and drivers making money. He said Uber will eventually push out all car companies and taxi commissions. Already the case in San Fran.

Spent sleeping Sunday night at Newark airport since flight was canceled and all hotels booked up.

"He said Uber will eventually push out all car companies and taxi commissions. Already the case in San Fran."

Highly unlikely. We were just in SF and there were more taxis than we have seen in years past. Likely due tot the strong economy. We used taxis and Uber. Uber did not seem any cheaper than taxis there. A very overpriced city for taxis to begin with. Perhaps they could take over Boston but haven't been there in quite a while

There are no right or wrong colors, Panda, just how, where and against which other colors that can make a huge difference. Walls should recede. If they do not, then they attack and make a place feel small and uncomfortable. Wall colors should act as a backdrop to furnishings and artwork. They are not the main focal point. BTW, red dining rooms are popular as warm colors are said to stimulate the appetite.

March 3, 2015 2:52 PM - DeLepp
Did not know that Benson. I recall him being born in NJ. Did he grow up in Queens?
March 3, 2015 3:00 PM - Legion
Thinking about it hard,
it appears to me that one of the explanations for the difference between generations is that the frame of reference has changed.
Gen X'ers grew up with a frame of reference outside of themselves in a consumerist society fully focused on developing the individual into whatever the theme du jour was. Whether it was Superfly or Evel Knievel, you were conditioned to be something outsized.
The Millennials, having been brought up in the age of social networking and apps have a distinctly pro-self image. One that defies attempts to mold it into anything other than who they are as an individual. They become the true center of their own movie-life as presented in daily tweets, facebook rants and instagram photos.
Whereas, the Gen X'ers always sought to become the consumerist ideal, they (Millennials) seek to deconstruct their daily rituals into the ideal moment.
These are generalizations, to be sure, but I think there is some kernel of truth in these meanderings.

...as an interesting parallel,
we can look at Bruce Jenner.
Growing up, this was the man on the Wheaties box.
The individual whose own superhuman abilities wins him the title of Greatest Athlete as winner of the Decathalon and acclaim on a worldwide scale.
Within this individual, however, who would have known that there was such internal anguish
and doubt at even his own identity.
It was only in this age, that he appears to have the self-confidence to show his true identity to the world as a woman.
Although, Jenner is a Baby Boomer, his story is one that seems to straddle several generations.

We are moving ahead swiftly with the Wealth Management offering for the millennials. Initially we are getting funds funnelled in through a broker dealer. Millennials don't really trust traditional asset management businesses and are only interested in low cost ETFs, which is fine. We have the products tailored to what they want and the money is starting to come in. Instead of going online and offering product directly, for now we are pursing other relationships like the firstone and there seem to be plenty of them.

Hello from Doha.

Re foreign aid, most of it funds projects that are managed by American companies, so the money tends to end up right back here where it belongs. Murica! Israel is an exception in that its aid tends to be of the no-strings-attached variety. Somewhere I read our aid averages $500 per Israeli citizen per year.

Why does anyone listen to him?

"“If Iran were to acquire nuclear weapons, this could presage catastrophic consequences, not only for my country, and not only for the Middle East, but for all mankind,” adding that, “the deadline for attaining this goal is getting extremely close.”

Netanyahu, in 1996

Four years before that Congressional speech, in 1992, then-parliamentarian Netanyahu advised the Israeli Knesset that Iran was “three to five years” away from reaching nuclear weapons capability, and that this threat had to be “uprooted by an international front headed by the U.S.”

In his 1995 book, “Fighting Terrorism,” Netanyahu once again asserted that Iran would have a nuclear weapon in “three to five years,” apparently forgetting about the expiration of his old deadline.

Payment at parking meters will remain in effect throughout NYC. For more information, please visit: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/motorist/alternate-side-parking.shtml.

The problem with this administration, and this is becoming increasingly apparent to all but the most obtuse observer, is that they do not like the separation of powers.
When faced with the fact that there is a Legislative branch of government that must assess world events and what is good for the American people, the response is that this elected branch of government has no standing to ask for expert testimony on matters of national importance.
When faced with the fact the capricious mandates emanating from the Executive branch of government are still subject to review by the Judicial branch of government, the response from this administration is a scolding at the State of the Union address.
There would be little controversy for having one of the leaders of another Democratic nation speak to our legislative branch of government if it weren't for the thin skinned attitude and disrespect for the Constitution exhibited by the administration currently in the White House.
