Does dob code stipulate how deep water pipes need to be below ground when it enters the house - eg 3 feet, 4 feet etc so as to minimize pipes freezing?

Good morning.
Pete, the thermocoupler tells the system that there's a flame to light the gas.
If there's no flame or the flame is too small then the thermocoupler doesn't let the gas into the system.
Make sure the technician checks that the pilot light is large enough and that the pilot light tube is cleared of any blockage.
Sometimes this is the underlying reason for repeated problems in a gas system, a simple blockage in the pilot light tube.

Here's the facts…

The debt grew the most dollar-wise during President Obama's term. He added $6.167 trillion, a 53% increase, in six years

http://useconomy.about.com/od/usdebtanddeficit/p/US-Debt-by-President.htm

i bet the rest of his so-called facts don't hold up under scrutiny.

Thus far Obama has added 8 Trillion of 18 Trillion National Debt.

all other Presidents combined. ALL other Presidents combined.

"Personal disposable income has grown nearly 6 times more under Democratic presidents"

...and yet,
under this President, average median income has fallen approximately $4,000 per household while
the number of Americans living under the Poverty line has increased.
More Americans are on Food Stamps than ever before and we have the lowest jobs participation rate in generations.

The point is that the facts are completely wrong on one of the items indicated.
Therefore, one has to question the credibility of the entire post.

I know the quotes are from some book written about how Democratic Presidents
have done better overall but like much of the stuff written by the Left,
it doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

For instance,
at this point, we are supposed to believe that America's economy is doing great.
According to all the Dems we're in a "great recovery".
Meanwhile, recently, the head of the Gallup organization stated something to the effect that:
"...if Americans knew the real unemployment numbers, they'd be scared".

They keep giving you unemployment numbers which discount the millions and millions of Americans
who have given up looking for work or are way underemployed.

DFB is right,
there's no longer a "stigma" attached to living off of the work of others.
It's part of the entitlement culture in general.
Many, many Americans simply believe, and have been conditioned to defend, the idea that there's this vast pool
of stuff they are supposed to get.

It's also fed by a rampant consumerism in Suburbia where every yutz with ears needs to show off that they have more than anybody else.
I had a patient come in recently with his son who was almost adult age.
Both were on a "subsidized" medicaid plan.
The son had $450 dollar sneakers. I kid you not.

No,
much of this didn't start under Obama.
The entitlement culture has its roots way back but it's reaching a peak now because the politics of division
have been fostering it.
So it becomes a Right vs. Left issue.
Used to be Americans in general believed in working hard and being thankful for what you had.
There's a much harder edge to that idea now and among a generation which has been raised in relative prosperity.
Basically, there are lessons which both sides have to learn and ALL Americans must learn by heart.
They should be drilling these lessons in school along with reading and writing and arithmetic.
Lessons such as:
-Social engineering does not work. It does not benefit society in the long term.
-Poverty can best be eliminated by a system of strong values, avoiding addiction and responsible decision making.
-Socialism is an economic dead end. Any attempt by latter day Bolsheveks or Progressives to tell you otherwise should be seen as manipulation.
-Government is not the source of citizen's rights, it is the protector of those rights.
I could go on.

DFB,
this is the reason I enjoy posting the photos of the modern day "anarchists" and "activists" at these recent protests.
They're full of Muffys and Shanes from Ohio and Wisconson who have no clue about how the world works in a poor neighborhood.
They're in it for the optics and the story. In short, because their own vanity outweighs their logic and their self-righteousness assures them that they know what's best for the "poor, unwashed masses".

To be fair,
there's no shortage of douchy types on the Right.
Those that just want to grab everything and tell everyone to eat cake.
I'm all for jailing those who defraud the taxpayer and the government.
One of the lessons we need to learn is strict oversight from these types as well.
We just have to be honest about what works and what doesn't.
I was reading about the Russian revolution recently and was shocked to learn that the Bolsheveks never enjoyed a wide popular support.
They seized power and held on to it by scheming and murder.
Meanwhile they sold themselves as "helpers" of the people.

I also understand that poverty is not in itself a measure of unhappiness.
What's being debated here is how a White, liberal, college-educated establishment (like the Baruch professor who assaulted the Asian police officer on the Brooklyn bridge and was ready to do "battle" with a bag full of hammers and gas masks)
uses the inner city "poor" folks as fodder for their own advancement.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/larrybell/2013/09/24/alarmists-are-in-way-over-their-heads-on-rising-ocean-claims/

Sea levels rise and fall. Ice ages come and go. The earth heats up and cools down.
It's been happening long before we were around. The article I just posted indicates how sea levels have been steadily rising since the end of the last Ice Age 20,000 years ago.
What has changed however is that
magazines like Rolling Stone now use these natural cycles against their political opponents.
It's a good strategy, blame the opposition for ignoring the consequences of natural disaster.
Only problem is, the Left doesn't accept accountability when their predictions are not met.
Instead, they double down and start a whole new wave of "denier" hit pieces.

I think randolph got pissed off at the discussion of class warfare in America.
We need to be able to get past such differences and examine what works and what doesn't work if we're going to move forward as a whole.
My suggestion is to convene a panel of scientists, analysts and economists to sit with a super computer like
Deep Blue and decide which programs and schemes are logical and illogical.
This is probably the way we will finally end this incessant cycle of blaming the other side in politics.
We need to let a super computer with AI cut through the bullshit on each side and give us the
statistical/historical/mathematical analysis of what is best for society.

Unfortunately,
in the end, it probably won't equate with happiness however.
We'll just be able to blame the computer instead of each other.

Long ago and far away, there was a city called "New York". It was a rough, dangerous place, but full of people who were interesting, creative, and savvy. And one of the things that these people most desired was a precious treasure -- so rare that many people thought it only existed in story -- called "a good, cheap apartment". And of these rare, precious gems, the most precious and most rare were those good, cheap apartments governed by an ancient and mystic code known as "rent control", for (unlike those governed by the more mundane "rent stabilization") these apartments were immune from the plagues of rent increases that regularly swept through the city, forcing good people from their homes as they bewailed their inability to afford the place where they had lived for years.
Now these rent control apartments were so precious that people so lucky as to live in them rarely if ever moved elsewhere. People would bribe building superintendents (usually immigrants from Ireland, Eastern Europe, or Latin America) to let them know if apartments became available or to make sure that their application was the only one sent to the management companies (as roving bands of extortioners and thieves were known then, and even to this day). Newspaper ads announcing the availability of such apartments would guarantee droves of seekers of housing descending on an address like dragons on an unguarded hoard. It was a rough and tumble world, where only the strong, the clever, and the nimble came out on top.
Now in those days, my friend Fred was looking for somewhere to live. Spotting an ad for a rent control apartment in the howling desert known as "the west Forties", he arrived in the early morning, knowing that the first applicant had the greatest chance of success. To his dismay, he saw that two interlopers had arrived before him and were even discussing between themselves how much of the dreaded "key money" they were prepared to pay the Charon who would ferry them over the River Styx to the Elysian Fields. Just then, Fred heard a jingling of keys that heralded the arrival of the super, as well as a hailed greeting in Spanish -- a greeting that his fellow suppliants received with blank incomprehension.
Fred thought fast. Surmising (correctly, as it turned out) that a Spanish-speaking super was more likely to be Roman Catholic than not and remembering that it was Ash Wednesday, Fred stuck his hand out the hall window, gathered a quantity of soot from the window sill on his thumb, and marked a cross on his own forehead just as the super came into view. The super looked at those assembled there, ignored all the others with their shiny, clean foreheads, went straight to Fred and invited him to see the apartment. A quick tour, a quick (loaded) handshake, and Fred left with high hopes. A week later, he had a new home.

The idea is that the radiant floor heating provides an inexpensive background of heat, and the other systems kick on as needed.

I do not appreciate returning to this frigid weather. Not only that, but I had to return to an emergency in one of my customers' buildings: a burst sprinkler pipe. This is not what I want to experience after a wonderful vacation.

Vacation was really great. Will put up some photos later.

Highlight was driving a dune buggy in Grand Turks, something I had always wanted to do. It was really something driving along the coast (which kind of looks like the landscape of Fort Tilden), passing wild donkeys and horses along the way.

I don't feel so bad after reading this from keyspan website where they are advertising a service contract for boiler:

Pipes burst because of cold. New city building code requires louvers on top of staircases, which lets frigied air in.

NCL is pretty good - not low class at all. However, please be aware that they tend to cater to family with small kids, complete with waterparks on the top. If you would prefer more sedate, older crowd, take Princess (which is the one I take). Princess is especially known for their Alaska cruises.

Yes, they are supposed to let smoke out of the staircase in case of fire.

Two possible solutions:

-put heater at top landing of staircase;
-put in a louver that closes under normal condition, but opens up in the case of fire.

Checking it out now.

example of why many americans have resentment, distrust and angry at medical delivery system and doctors...
My friend in Florida who had partial lung removal for cancer last fall and finished his chemotherapy therapy treatments last month had appt with his oncologist for this friday. He went last week for PET scan to check for evidence of cancer and blood work on monday. Obviously very anxious after all been through for results and feedback.
Today doctors office calls and says canceling appt and can't reschedule until middle of March.
Of course - this would have been a 5 minute if lucky visit with doctor. Facing lots of anxiety. Told to wait a month.
Plus -- he still has port in chest needed for chemo. No mention that this port needs to be 'flushed' or risk infection.

Glad you had a good cruise, Benson. Did you catch The Italian-Americans on PBS last night?
http://video.pbs.org/program/italian-americans/

The Italian Americans reveals how Italian immigrants challenged the notion of the American “melting pot” — chronicling four generations of Italian-American lives, from the massive late 19th Century wave of immigration to today. From the importance of the family over an individual’s personal aspirations, to their distinctive, circular migration patterns, to the specter of the Mafia that still plagues Italian Americans today, this series peels away myths and stereotypes to reveal a world uniquely Italian and uniquely American.

Hi, Benson, Welcome home. Pretty much same ole, same ole, but here are some highlights.

You missed _ _ _'s and Eva's birthday. Cobble and BH's SoCal vacay/honeymoon.

Dave's flu and Pete's, UTI. A Couple others 'under the weather'.

rf's cat has diabetes.

Scott has been absent for personal reason - not OT related. RC, teases us with a new revised Lifeinbkln in the works.

RC's dad slipped on ice and broke his hip. Surgery today.

Pepper finally made it to the Berkshires today for business.

DeLepp has picked his paint colors WITHOUT our help.

I have no idea what Six is up to. More spy work, I guess.

DH went to see 50 Shades of Grey with his galpal. They are hot and heavy. Oh, and DH got a good raise. He's psyched and will stay on there.

Dave's switchplate is now brown on the rolling pin display wall.

M4L still working on his investment property. Moving at a snail's pace.

R'andi's offer on a house in Bed Stuy has been accepted. Fingers crossed.

Legion pops in from time to time to be condescending to R'andi and then moves on to science talk.

MM is buried alive in snow. Hard for her to get to the computer. She hasn't posted much.

No blogicides, but for R'andi today. I don't have high hopes for that working out too well. He's busy anyway.

AND, I'm sure I've missed a million other things.

Hip surgery is no fun. My mother cursed a blue streak afterward, she was very uncomfortable. I asked her if she was done screaming, and would she get out of bed and walk.
