So my cat has diabetes. Fixable with twice-daily insulin shots the same time every day. But it would be very difficult--have to hire someone for that if I go away and I was planning to visit my brother in St. Croix next month, plus another wedding in Israel at the beginning of July. And just the treatment (insulin and syringes) is a big budget item. Oy!

Sucks rf. And that's exactly why I don't get another cat or dog, as they get old it gets expensive and everyone is miserablr about it.
#19
February 14, 2015 10:55 AM - rf
The biggest problem is that if I go away even overnight, I would have to hire someone to give him his shot.

Really, Randi? That's very generous but they are 2x/day at the same time every day. And you'd have to find the cat first! Cats aren't usually like dogs, running to the door when the bell rings or the key turns.

But again, it's a very generous offer and I appreciate it.

It's sunny and warm again, a little light coastal fog.

My elderly friend's cat had diabetes. They gave it the shots. I'm sorry, rf. Not an easy situation.

Randi, you'd have to find the cat to give him his insulin shot!
#28
February 14, 2015 12:11 PM - pepper
Sorry about the cat, rf. I'd offer to help too, as I have lots of experience giving the shots, as I mentioned yesterday. But the same time every day thing would make it tough.

Seems like the best option would be to board him with a vet, but not sure how pricey that would be. Or maybe get someone to take him in to their home while you're gone. Tough decision.

I can't say that Toulouse, the cat I lived with with diabetes, had a great quality of life, especially towards the end, which is why my roommate finally decided to put him down.

February 14, 2015 12:25 PM - rf
Thanks, everyone. I have been googling (of course!) and am working on a list of questions for the vet when I call her on Monday. This cat was the kitten of a feral cat and he is very skittish. I got him when my kid was in 3rd grade because she really wanted a cat, but even as a little kitten he wasn't much fun--he can only stand a little stimulation before he has to run away, sometimes leaving with a bite or scratch. I think I'd be able to give him the shots but it wouldn't be fun, and it would be difficult and time-consuming for a pet sitter. And boarding him would be a nightmare for him. I guess I might be able to try to do a combination air-b&b/cat sitting kind of thing but it would be tricky since I'd need very good timing.

During the past month he's lost a lot of weight and his rear legs are very weak so he can't really run--it was almost funny to see him attempt to escape when I got him into the carrier. He now has trouble jumping onto furniture, although he manages to come up on my bed at some point every night. He used to like a little snuggling--he'd kind of lean on me with his back along my arm or leg. But he doesn't do that anymore.
#30
February 14, 2015 12:32 PM - dibs
It really does sound like his quality of life has deteriorated already. Sorry.

- Billionaire investor David Tepper reduced his firm’s investments in U.S. stocks last quarter, liquidating stakes in some of the largest companies.

The value of Appaloosa Management’s publicly disclosed U.S. equity positions dropped by $2.74 billion last quarter to $4 billion, according to a regulatory filing Friday. The firm exited its holdings in Citigroup Inc., Halliburton Co., Facebook Inc. and Apple Inc. The firm also sold almost all its shares of an exchange-traded fund that tracks the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.

The moves came as Tepper, who manages about $20 billion, made bullish comments about U.S. stocks in interviews during the quarter. He said on CNBC in December that the S&P 500 could rise 8 percent to 10 percent in 2015 after telling Bloomberg Television in October that the price-to-earnings ratios for U.S. stocks weren’t high.

“The U.S. economy is pretty good, stocks are not at high multiples right now,” he said in the October interview.

LOL…Criminal Minds repeat about the Morgellons…

Morgellons (also called Morgellons disease or Morgellons syndrome) is a condition whose sufferers have the delusional belief that they are infested with disease-causing agents described as things like insects, parasites, hairs or fibers, while in reality no such things are present.[1]

Sufferers may exhibit a range of cutaneous symptoms such as crawling, biting, and stinging sensations (formication), unusual fibers in the skin, and persistent skin lesions (e.g., rashes or sores). These symptoms have been identified by a range of medical experts[2] including dermatologists,[3] entomologists,[4] and psychiatrists,[5] as consistent with delusional parasitosis (DP or DOP).[1] Some cases of self-diagnosed Morgellons have been more accurately diagnosed as known skin disorders.[3]

Two excellent articles in Barron's this week about economic history.
"How the Industrial Revolution Began" by John Steele Gordon
and
"Pay it All, and Pay it Quickly" by Bill White
The latter is particularly recommended for anyone who thinks Paul Krugman has the correct view on the role of debt.

I don't know about the "more or less" idea.

I am very concerned that Krugman and others who agree with him have influenced National policy to the point that the US has a dangerous debt load.

I hope that you will read the article I mentioned to see how high the stakes are here.

Anyone who cares about the long term safety of our country, the state of the poor, and the prospects for future generations should be informed on this topic.

Ouch!

"Lately, a moral panic about speech and sexual activity in universities has reached a crescendo. Universities have strengthened rules prohibiting offensive speech typically targeted at racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities; taken it upon themselves to issue “trigger warnings” to students when courses offer content that might upset them; banned sexual acts that fall short of rape under criminal law but are on the borderline of coercion; and limited due process protections of students accused of violating these rules.

Most liberals celebrate these developments, yet with a certain uneasiness. Few of them want to apply these protections to society at large. Conservatives and libertarians are up in arms. They see these rules as an assault on free speech and individual liberty. They think universities are treating students like children. And they are right. But they have also not considered that the justification for these policies may lie hidden in plain sight: that students are children. Not in terms of age, but in terms of maturity. Even in college, they must be protected like children while being prepared to be adults."

Sadly, for the first time in our history as a nation, this is now true.
There is little personal responsibility anymore.
Everything bad that happens is "through no fault of their own"
Nobody can win, nobody can lose.
All consequences, good or bad are considered "socially unjust".

Why would an undergraduate need to have a car or a pool to have an affair with a pool boy (or girl - not to be sexist), or a mechanic?

"I would be interested in knowing what Six thinks about the issue of undergraduates sleeping with their professors."

If the undergrad is in the prof's class, serious abuse of power.
If the undergrad isn't in the prof's class (or otherwise employed by the prof as a research assistant, etc) still a potential abuse of power especially if it's a prof from the dept in which the undergrad majors. Besides that, profs from all departments sit on grant application review boards. But at some point they are just two consenting adults - a bio prof sleeping with a French lit major - so what? So I guess it depends on the situation, though some universities are issuing blanket bans against it as a precaution.

You can stop reading there. The man is a moron. Steward has never claimed to be a journalist, and his show is on Comedy Central.

He probably also thinks Ron Burgundy was a real newscaster, and the Mary Tyler Moore show was a documentary. Also Clark Kent and Lois Lane were real reporters, and Spiderman's alter ego, Peter Parker really took photographs for the Daily Bugle. I'm sure he's jealous of them, too.

All the house needs is some foliage. If you think you'll be there through the summer, put out some nice potted plants, some flowerboxes on the parlor floor windows, maybe even a small tree in a pot in between the bottom windows. As usual MM is missing the main point of the Post article on Jon Stewart.
What the author is saying is that Jon Stewart is a comedian who pretends to be a journalist but is in fact,
reporting on world events and using his influence to dupe his gullible and lazy viewers into believing in his world view.

What's easier for a lazy millenial with minimal job prospects than to tune in to Jon Stewart news and hear that it's all a scam being perpetrated by a vast and evil group of Republicans and Conservatives.

Even when I watched David Letterman in college I only took his schtick with a grain of salt.
I actually watched to see the bands and some interesting interviews.
I never mistook his one sided idiocy as truth in any way.

Folks need to be taught to take anything the media says today as a product of the producers and entertainers involved.
This is the same creeping idiocy we are beginning to see in science.

I don't know if this was public knowledge, but I heard from a reliable source that NBC News had opened the 'vault' and offered Stewart "Meet the Press". He was told to name his price. He turned it down and they gave the job to Chuck Todd. NBC News thinks he's a journalist.
February 15, 2015 7:10 PM - Legion
I don't doubt that the people tuning in to his show were mainly Left leaning but he was good at
reinforcing their preconcieved notions randolph.
He's definitely talented and funny, but at the same time, we cannot underestimate the influence that entertainers can
have on the general public.
As the article points out, he had a good deal of influence on a key demographic between 18-34 year olds.

"As usual MM is missing the main point of the Post article on Jon Stewart."

No, Legion, I'm not missing anything. The writer clearly can't tell the difference between a comedy act and real journalism. End of story.

If it confuses him because Jon Stewart uses a set that looks like a news desk, he is probably also confused by the news desk used by the actors on Saturday Night Live. Hint - that too, is comedy. I think most thinking people can tell the difference between satire and news. Except for the readers of the Post and watchers of Fox News. Both of those "news" outlets are also comedy. So, in retrospect, perhaps I should excuse Kyle. He can only comment on what he knows.
February 15, 2015 7:39 PM - MontroseMorris

February 15, 2015 7:58 PM - Legion
There you go again MM,
you simply don't want to see the argument that the writer is presenting precisely because he's arguing from the opposite side.
There is no mistaking that a show on "Comedy Central" is going to be a satirical presentation.
The fact that you persist in misunderstanding the writer's main focus is only indicative of your own inability to see beyond your own side of the argument.
Give the writer the minimum of credit in understanding that he's presenting the problem with a "comedic" entertainer, being taken as real news by his audience.
That's the main point here,
that a comedian is being taken as an arbiter of truth by an entire segment of the population.

Saturday Night Live is guilty of it as well,
but at least SNL has a wider variety of characters to skewer.

The attempt to ridicule the Post or Fox news as guilty of the same is false.
Remember, Fox news is the only major news outlet that will present BOTH of the arguments.
That's something you will never find regularly on Jon Stewart or your sacred NY Times.
February 15, 2015 8:06 PM - Legion
...and don't get me wrong,
comedians are often the best revealers of universal truths,
but they are not immune from analysis by any means.
You want your cake and you want to eat it as well with Jon Stewart.
You want a brilliantly funny entertainer who tells the news and reveals no inherent bias.
More precisely, he is beyond reproach because he tells the funny truths EXACTLY as you see them.
LOL,
that's the funniest joke of all.

February 15, 2015 8:55 PM - BirdnestHead
No, not the first time a MS-Update has broken something. If there's enough of an outcry, they will issue a fix soon. I try as much as possible to not rely on Windows or Office specific features. Without knowing anything more about your specific problems, I can make a few general suggestions.
1) If not having active-x stuff is the worst thing, you can try re-installing it, or possibly forcing it back on. I'm not familiar with doing that. It may involve playing around with some Registry keys. I would expect there would be a MS tech bulletin available.
2) If "broken" MS-Office is the problem, possibly installing a new version of Libre-Office might be of some use.
3) Stop screwing around with MicroSoft, and start using Linux :-) I would recommend Mint Linux version 17.1, with the "Cinammon" desktop manager.
