My wife's little niece tells me that they are taught in her Richmond Va school to refer to black Americans as "brown people" and I was NOT believing it. I told her don't use that term here in NYC as I presume that is not appropriate and likely insulting to many.

Have to grill her again tonight as I am not believing it and that she should not use that term

Benson, you really are an ass. Leave Mopar alone. Where do you get off calling her an idiot? And as M4L said, if you don't like Brownstoner, and you don't like the people who run it, work there, or the content, THEN DON'T FRIGGING READ IT. You've spent the last 5 years bitching about Brownstoner, yet you read it daily. For someone who hates the entire enterprise so much, you've certainly done your share of supporting it. Every click from your computer is money in Jonathan Butler's bank account. Thanks!

Not the greatest headline - on the other hand the CIty, and the country, are polarized. But the police shootings seemed to have unified most. Judging from the vigils and the street memorial, Bed-Stuy is as horrified as everyone else, as are protestors. No one was calling for the killing of police except a few small dissident groups and idiots like Lisker. Bad apples are everywhere, including NYPD. However the headline didn't warrant the nastiness of benson's reply. After all , he perfectly illustrated that polarization.

I called you an ass because you attacked Mopar. She's my friend, and she didn't deserve your attack. If you don't like it, too bad. Make criticisms without the personal attacks and you won't get one in return.

I think Mopar was trying to do a "where were you when..." this terrible thing happened in her neighborhood (which is my neighborhood too). Maybe she didn't say it very well, but it's a terrible thing that happened here. I was far, far away when it happened but I know that corner very well and have passed it often. It is such a heartbreak and I can't believe that there are many New Yorkers except a very tiny lunatic fringe who think that the chickens have come home to roost (which is what Malcolm X said when JFK was assassinated).

When I heard they were doing an anti-terrorism exercise I freaked. My friend is part of the NYPD anti-terrorism and I was terrified he was one of them.

I got the feeling that people were completely shocked by the killings-even people who protested over Garner. But there will always be frigne lunatics on both sides who use every opportunity to wreak havoc and damage.

DH;

Wonder Bread used to run a commercial called "The Wonder Years". It showed a kid growing up from babyhood to adolescence, and how Wonder Bread was a vital part of their nutrition at each stage. For some reason, the commercial was memorable of our time. Hence, the title of the show.

In answer to your question of yesterday about plays on the cyberwar: perhaps the company best positioned is Lockheed-Martin, which does a lot of IT systems stuff for the federal government. However, LMT ((which I own) has had quite a run-up recently, and tends to concentrate on government work. Another possibility (for private company work) is IBM (which I also own). That stock has been beaten up a lot recently due to a deteriorating earnings situation the past two years. For the longer term, however, IBM will certainly capture some of this work and now might be good time to jump in.

here is another mutant variation of type of investment benson had discussed awhile ago"
"You can own a piece of baseball history, but it's nothing that can be put on a shelf.
The Internal Revenue Service is putting outfielder Darryl Strawberry's retirement annuity on the auction block next month.

The annuity, seized by the IRS because Strawberry owed back taxes, was part of a contract he signed in 1985, back when he was slugging home runs for the New York Mets.
The annuity will be worth about $1.3 million, to be paid out over nearly 19 years, when it goes up for sale on January 20, according to court documents.
The starting bid is $550,000.
The IRS filed a lien against Strawberry because he owes the IRS back taxes from 1989, 1990, 2003 and 2004. A court document from 2012 said he owed the IRS nearly $543,000.
