Wow. Amazing what havoc can ensue when a full, large cup of coffee jumps up and falls over across the kitchen counter already covered in mail, gold findings, plastic baggies, tools, cigarettes, lighter, cash, phone and computer.

Phew! Electronics unscathed.

Speaking of which, I just checked my SS statement and my benefit that I will receive at age 62 keeps rising. It is up over $200/month from when I last checked, maybe 4-6 months ago. How does this continue to rise even though I am no longer paying into it????

I was once on a road trip in Ottawa, and was doing some work in my hotel room on my laptop. I accidentally hit my cup of coffee, and it spilled right onto my laptop, destroying it. That wreaked havoc, as my laptop was my life at that time.

It is amazing to think that not that long ago, I would spend many evenings in a hotel with my laptop, connecting via a dial-up modem. It was part of my evening ritual to listen to the modem start up sounds, and feeling relieved when the high-frequency screech of a connection was heard.

So my dilemma this weekend is whether or not to buy a ski helmet and goggles locally or online. I bought the skis, boots and bindings quite cheaply online and brought them to the local store to be mounted. They actually said that they were quite good skis and tipped me off that new boots today must stay clasped when not in use. I bought the poles locally because they really need to be sized right.

But the local shop is certainly more expensive that REI.com and REI has much better selection. I will compare prices and, goggles and helmets really do have to feel right so I suspect I will support the local retailer.

They’re largely moving to neighborhoods that were previously racially diverse, and majority-white neighborhoods are getting even whiter.

The link above is to a WSJ article on the study Pete posted yesterday. I found the website for the study really hard to use but there are articles about it at various publications and websites.

Insurance is not under the control of the city like water and taxes and fines and regulations. . You are right but that is a whole other story. Also, insurance rates for a commercial enterprise are completely different. Was it mostly liability????

I do agree with the landlords that the regulations are becoming more and more intrusive and ridiculous.

Easy solution for that serious problem.
Round up all the white people living in unapproved neighborhoods and throw them in the river in the middle of the winter.
Cost effective.

Speaking seriously about that WSJ article: I take exception to their use of race. The phenomenon they describe for black middle class areas like Hollis (chopping up single-family homes into low-income apartments) has also been going on in white middle class areas like Bensonhurst, Gravesend and Sheepshead Bay. The issue is that a certain part of the middle class - the non financial/media sectors like Con Ed workers, civil-service workers, etc. - are being squeezed out. At the same time, the burgeoning immigrant population is eager to take over these homes and chop them up into apartments.

NY Times (!) op-ed from Republican strategist Frank Luntz:
The Midterms Were Not a Revolution
On election night 1994, as Republicans recaptured the House for the first time in 40 years, I stood in the audience and watched my client Newt Gingrich, who would soon become speaker of the House, declare the beginning of the “Republican revolution.”

I knew immediately that the smartest man I had ever worked for was making the worst rhetorical blunder of his career. Nobody voted Republican to start a revolution. They did so because they were fed up with a Democratic president overreaching on health care and a government seemingly incapable of doing even the smallest thing effectively. We all know what happened when Mr. Gingrich tried to turn his rhetoric into action.

Sound familiar? No one is quite saying “revolution” this week, but Republicans across the country, in their glee over Tuesday’s elections, are coming dangerously close to making the same mistake.

I have to say that I really enjoy running that catering hall, and we are doing phenomenally well. We have become the "go to" place in the Mexican community for family parties. When our rental agent is there on Monday night, we always have at least six families come by to inquire, and on some weekends, we book five or six events. Our profits have allowed us to renovate the main hall and the kitchen, and in this coming year we are going to put down a new carpet and put in new bathrooms.

The Mexicans like us. We give them a good deal and are not disturbed by their parties going to 2 or 3 in the morning (most halls don't want this).

Hiya Fucktards,

Today is a great day! Why you ask? Well it's all over the Elections, Quantitative easing and crashing comedy prices.
Do you know Commodites have entered a Bear Market, down over 20% in all classes.

Plus the economic activity of Brownstone Brooklyn is way off. I look around and all the Fucktard businesses are empty.

There's a Rumor that Greene Grape is in trouble, someone told me there're late with this month rent check, by the way they pay 17,500 a month for the space on Fulton St.

Der Schwarze Kölner is empty all week long, they pray for the weekend to come. Vanderbilt Ave is a Ghost Town, Washington Ave sucking the oxygen out of the room. Yeah the fun times are here.

17.5k is a little high for that space & biz but not too high relative to comparable space & location. Someone else will go into that and the beer hall spot. It takes quite a lot of biz to fail in an area before there is a slow down in retailers who think they are better operators than the previous tenants

Did everyone see this?

"This trapezoidal tract, just northeast of Bushwick, is being cited by the city’s bohemian class as the latest up-and-coming neighborhood.

The trajectory is familiar, and the players have slid into familiar position: broke millennials, underemployed artists, craven property speculators, fearful natives and first-time homeowners priced out of other markets.

Cafes with vegan muffins, yoga studios and destination pizzerias have (naturally) sprouted. Bars with names like Milo’s Yard and Bierleichen are slated to open. Guitar cases, tote bags and shearling coats are increasingly frequent accessories on pedestrians."

In case you didn't know: Sandra Fluke ran for office in California during this election. She lost. I guess most people didn't see the subsidizing bc pills for 30 year old "students" as a pressing issue.

Wow Mia love has such novel and new ideas. Go GOP!

"mericans have a constitutional, fundamental, and individual right to keep and bear arms. I believe the Second Amendment is essential to the preservation of our American way of life and that it guarantees the protection of all the other freedoms listed in the Bill of Rights. Furthermore, the Second Amendment preserves our ability to protect ourselves, our families, and our homes. Unfortunately, too many politicians are willing to infringe upon this right by making it more difficult for law-abiding Americans to purchase and possess firearms.

As an ardent supporter of the Second Amendment, I will oppose all efforts to restrict our gun rights. I am a concealed carry permit holder and a proud gun owner. As your Representative in Congress, you can count on me to vigilantly protect and defend your Second Amendment rights and all of our other rights enshrined in the Constitution. I refuse to compromise away our fundamental rights as citizens."

Fluke graduated Cornell in 2003 - so presumably "still in college" is a condescending way to refer to someone in academia.

Are people in medical school at that age somehow scrubs compared to someone working in local gov't which may or may not be as demanding as being in the PTA at a kids school?

and 'having ones hand out' is nonsense - she advocated for health insurers to cover contraception which is a fundamental part of womens' health.

that silly meme is trying to equate "responsibility" with following judeo-christian ideas of women's gender rolls - absolute nonsense.

I can't speak for Randi - but I'm talking solely about healthcare and my point is healthcare should be a fundamental right - you should not be labeled a 'taker' if you're in the same boat as your daughter but don't have a great father to help out.

When you would talk about being caretaker for the sick people in your life - i would say to myself "wow, benson is great- but wtf do people do in similar circumstances who don't have a benson in their life?"

charities are great - but often only help people within certain groups (religious or otherwise).

I think the 'takers vs makers' political discourse is played out.

Obamacare isn't perfect but it's better than what we had - we need a single payer "medicare for all" like many other 1st world nations have. it shouldn't even be a debate
November 6, 2014 12:27 PM - Deleted
"healthcare should be a fundamental right"

That statement is exactly why I have the philosophical bent I do. It's one thing to propose a concrete governmental action and show how it will benefit society. For example, if folks were to say: "I think the government should have primary-care clinics in poor areas that offer the following sets of services..", I could support it. But when it becomes a "right", it leads to the entitlement mentality that has handicapped this nation - and especially those who advocate it. Sandra Fluke is the apotheosis of this mentality, and I'm glad she lost.
November 6, 2014 12:28 PM - dibs
Thats what I was proposing when Obamacare was first being discussed. I proposed giving every one a card like an EBT card and put under jurisdiction of Medicaid. I got all sorts of pushback on this idea from MM because she was concerned that people might "feel" like they were on Welfare, which is what I equated it to.

Absolutely ridiculous but you can't tell her anything. God forbid people feel bad about somethng being provided to many people for free

", it leads to the entitlement mentality that has handicapped this nation - and especially those who advocate it."

i would argue paying for the current crop of elderly medicare recipients entitlements - who are receiving way more in benefits than they paid in - is what's crippling this nation. if we're talking personal responibility - why not deny medicare coverage for anyone who has an illness due to their own poor choices (diabetes for the overweight, cancer for smokers)

i do not see what making sure 20 - 50+ year olds - the ones who are working and paying taxes to make sure our entitlement ponzi schemes stay 'afloat' - have healthcare is a bad thing.

the fathers should be using condoms bit ultimately it is the woman who needs to enforce that, or deal with the possible consequences. The government shouldnt have to pay for that. Besides, as i said above, many tines it wont even be used

if republicans really want to convince me of this libertarian kick some of them are on - then propose no entitlement for current medicare/ss recipients (65+) - but that will NEVER happen - because that would alienate their voter base.

i have no reason NOT to support something like that - i do not expect to receive SS/Medi when i'm of retirement age - this would put substantially more money in my pocket every month.

I would think smith/bergen too expensive a rent for something like that. their website shows several locations-
east W.burg, prosphts, smith st, and gowanus. probably just giving up smith street.
November 6, 2014 5:31 PM - pepper
Yeah, seems it. But they just moved in there 2 years ago, right? It was that organic deli/grocery before.
November 6, 2014 5:53 PM - petebklyn
some excuse for organic deli/grocery. But at this point there are few places to buy any fresh food/goceries on smith left.

I can't find a dress shirt except for a pink one. and I have to go to Utica tomorrow for a funeral. They all must be in brooklyn but that doesn't seem possible...I should at least have one white or blue one here.

except for few years away at school and in NYC and the last in nursing home, she lived in 2 houses. One where she grew up and the house next door when married and raised family. Even church she went to and where funeral is ...is on same block around corner.
Her house is where the old our gang would get together to see each other... after our family holiday dinners after we went away to college and moved away
