Wut

In the late 80s My parents started doing key party swapping and shit and my mom fell in love with another dude and my dad was all "wtf I thought this was a game" and then my parents got divorced and my mom married the dude after he divorced his wife. Shit got complicated because we all lived in the same small town, the families had been friends (I think my dad was fucking my now step dad's ex) and I went to school with my moms new dudes kids, his ex started going around talking shit about my mom and basically she lost all her friends, was a pariah even though this other bitch was part of the sex games too. My mom and dude (now stepdad) finally moved away to San Fran 5 years later when my little sister went to college. My dad ended up moving to an apartment nearby and met this blonde dentist who lived upstairs and they get married and had 2 kids who are now a freshman in college and freshman in high school.

From Bloomberg:
Christie Heckler Does Not Want to 'Sit Down and Shut Up'
But Keady is no stranger to what New Jersey has been through. He grew up in Belmar, now lives in neighboring Spring Lake, and after the storm, he said, he took a month off of work and volunteered “every day” in Belmar. “They trusted me with one of their borrowed dump trucks and I was running clean up crews all over town," Keady said. "I wanna know how many crawl spaces the governor was in, cleaning up. But he got his photo-op in Belmar.”

Keady talked about how only 20 percent of a $1.1 billion a program to get people back in their homes has actually gone out. “His administration is sitting on $800 million of taxpayer money that was supposed to go to our fellow New Jerseyans,” Keady said.

I don't want to jump too far into the OT catcall debate but
this is a very interesting article by Camille Paglia, a well known author and thinker.
It adds another dimension to the discussion and has much to consider:

"Paglia was born in Endicott, New York, the elder daughter of Pasquale and Lydia Anne (née Colapietro) Paglia. Both her parents immigrated to the United States from Italy.[4] Additionally, Paglia has stated that her father's side of the family were from the Campanian towns of Avellino, Benevento, and Caserta"
October 30, 2014 12:29 PM - rf
She graduated from SUNY Binghamton just like me (a few years before me).

from Wikipedia
Paglia is known for her critical views of many aspects of modern culture, including feminism and liberalism.[4][5] She has been characterized variously as a "contrarian academic" and a feminist "bête noire,"[6][7] a "witty controversialist,"[8] and a maverick,[9] Margaret Wente has called Paglia "a writer in a category of her own... a feminist who hates affirmative action; an atheist who respects religion" and "a Democrat who thinks her party doesn't get it."[10] Martha Duffy writes that Paglia "advocates a core curriculum based mostly on the classics" and rails against "chic French theorists Michel Foucault and Jacques Lacan," and "has a strong libertarian streak — on subjects like pornography — that go straight to her '60s coming-of-age."[6] Elaine Showalter has called Paglia a "radical libertarian," noting her socially liberal stands on abortion, sodomy, prostitution, drug use, and suicide. Paglia has denounced feminist academics and women's studies, celebrated popular culture and Madonna, and become a media celebrity, writing op-eds and gossip columns, appearing on television and telling her story to journalists.[11]

She's a Lesbian.

I take no issue with glancing, looking or staring. It's passive and involves no threat. Verbalization escalates things and depending on the words spoken and the conditions - nighttime, desolate area or guys on a B&B porch wearing pink - it can and cannot be threatening.

The incident that happened to me recently was unnerving at worst. Dark out but early evening, alongside a park with no one around. As I mentioned, he touched me as well - grabbed my shoulder. He followed along side me for a block until I ducked into a store. I had intended to walk to my car but decided it put me in too vulnerable a position. I did some fake shopping for 10 minutes, left the store, looked around for him and when I didn't see him any longer I walked to my car. The incident ate up about 15 minutes in total.

Like I said yesterday, doesn't happen often anymore which is a welcomed benefit to aging. However, young, attractive, sexy attired women go through constantly - the more average woman, as the video showed, have it happen often.

It would be nice if through awareness, men stopped doing this to women.

I agree, looking is fine. Too much staring can be creepy, but whatever. As Part says, verbalization is where the line gets blurry. Sometimes, it can be done just right, and it feels like a compliment (as I recall, from my younger days). But more often, it can feel very threatening. And any touching is downright scary and invasive. And saying anything back usually just invites the whole episode to escalate. I've played it both ways, and ignoring tends to be the way to go.
October 30, 2014 1:46 PM - Partridge
For the men here who may think catcalls are harmless, consider that as women, we often feel that men can easily dominate us physically. To tell a stranger who is already being threatening to "Fuck off." is not always a good move.

Imagine you are at the check-out at Walmart and the guy next to you on line is purchasing a gun with ammo. You are buying something awkward to carry - say lumber. You take out your wallet to pay and the guy with the new gun sees a wallet full of cash. Your assets.

You struggle towards your car and suddenly the guy with the new gun appears alongside you. He walks with you saying, "Oow, man those are some fine Benny's you have. I'd like to get me some of those. Gimme those Benny's baby right now!" He wants your assets, he wants them bad, and you are not sure how he intends to get them from you.

What makes you think you know what everybody else knows?

Dealing with potential threats and danger is pretty much a part of what it means to be a man. It is biologically determined. For millions of years men have defended the family from danger. Hence the phrase: "Women and children first"

Of course this basic human instinct can be acculturated out through a process of emasculation.

Most men will understand perfectly what I am talking about.

here's a good snippet of MRA nonsense

Jon • a day ago
The feminists along with the sociology and psychology grad students on here like to over-complicate things. The Men are not looking to subjugate, oppress or intimidate the Woman.

1) This is a very simple behavior which can be explained with biochemistry. Their testosterone levels are high which leads to aggressive and assertive behaviors. Male members of a species are genetically programmed to seek mates. I thought we all learned this in junior high school biology.

2) With education (and social training) Males can learn to channel high testosterone levels into productive and constructive activities. Males who are socioeconomically disadvantaged often display primitive behaviors due to their lack of integration into civilization. This has always been the case. Why is this shocking?

3) Risk/Reward. This is not a crime yet therefore the potential reward is greater than risk. It really is that simple, particularly when you are uneducated an unsocialized. You're incapable of thinking any more complex than that. Remember - You barely got your GED!

4) ROI - While the return on their efforts seems painfully low to the observer, to them they have no other means of success. Many of you Men on here are making above the poverty level in terms of income. This means you have access to women at work, gym and other venues and social networks which they cannot afford to gain entry into. The reward for you is comparatively low because you have other outlets. They do not. The argument that a Man should improve his social standing and finances before pursuing a Woman is tangential in the context of this video so please do not bring that response up here.

Bringing up notions of personal responsibility, class, etiquette and other concepts are moot here. 90% of males who catcall in the video are presumably earning less than $20k a year, come from a broken home, have an incomplete high school education and remain socially unassimilated into "Mainstream Society".

When you educate, socially assimilate and economically empower these Men all of this behavior suddenly vanishes. There it is feminists! The solution to your problem is not actually Women's empowerment as you previously believed. It's actually Men's empowerment!

Some may say this is over-simplification. Well if you look at countries or times in history where the majority of Males are employed in the workforce I dare say there would be a large impact on all of this.

"That video is dumb. Some of the comments were just mild compliments, some were boorish and some were borderline menacing. To label them all as "harassment" is just silly."

Note that I characterized most of the activity in negative terms. My issue was with labelling all of the behavior as "harassment". This is a trick of "identity politics"/professional victimhood. Its real purpose is to suppress speech and by extension, certain thoughts on the topic that its advocates just don't want to hear. It was first perfected on racial issues, which is why conversations on this topic are so poisonous in this country.

And if you don't like my use of the term "femi-nazi", feel free to substitute it the phrase "Bureau of Pure Thought". Same idea.

"Obviously you are ashamed of being male." (among other ridiculous assertions against someone he barely knows.)

Wow, dh casually mentions that he thinks catcalling is disrespectful to women, and that makes him, in DCB's eyes, a woosie, ashamed of being a man, a coward, and every other emasculating thing he can think of calling him without actually saying it.

Way to go. A new low reached on the OT. So glad I decided to see what was going on here. (Not.)

"Dealing with potential threats and danger is pretty much a part of what it means to be a man."

Oh please, I think both men and women, when put in the same situations, react about the same. The person's gender doesn't define their ability to deal with danger. Most women are as brave as most men. And the majority of men in the Western world haven't had to actively think about that since the last century, serving in the military not withstanding.
