Michelle Obama finally wore one of his dresses last week. It was a big deal since she would have been the first since Jackie to have not worn his dresses. Guess word got out he was dying as last week he also officially turned the design of his brands to someone else.

Arkady, you out there???? if you start a sentence with "Meanwhile" does it always have a comma after it????
Edited at October 21, 2014 8:46 AM
#17
October 21, 2014 8:49 AM - dibs
"Meanwhile" is a transitional word, so yes, it needs a comma following it.

Transition words provide useful information in sentences and paragraphs. In writing, transition words help the writer get from one idea to another; they supplement a piece of writing and provide a smoother flow to the writing style.

{Relationships}
Transition words often describe the relationships between ideas. In the classic sentence, "I think, therefore I am," "therefore" is a transition word that describes the relationship between the speaker's ability to think and his very existence.

{Cause and Effect}
Transition words can be useful in describing cause and effect relationships. For example, a writer might say, "I ate the sandwich, and consequently I am not hungry." The word "consequently" is a transition word that explains that the cause of this situation is eating the sandwich and the resulting effect, or consequence, is that the writer is no longer hungry.

{Sequencing}
Sometimes a transition word or group of transition words might be used to describe a sequence of events. So a writer might say, "First I went to the store, then I came back home." "First" and "then" are both transition words in this sentence, used to explain the order of events that happened in this writer's day.

{Compare and Contrast}
Transitional words can help a writer compare or contrast two ideas or things. For example, a writer might say, "Bicycle A was well-constructed; conversely, Bicycle B was poorly made." The word "conversely" shows that there is a discrepancy between the construction of the two bicycles.

{Emphasis}
Transition words can provide sentence enhancement by showing emphasis. Words and phrases such as "furthermore," "in addition" or "especially" work in this fashion.

Never had the windows here in philly cleaned. Just did this one. They are a bit of a PITA to clean. Although the windows can be cantelevered inside to clean the exterior, they are single pane with an interior storm that you have to loosen 8 screws and pop it out, not to mention the 6 true divided light panes in each one. Might do 2 more that we use more than others but not all 8 and definitely not the tops which usually have blinds covering them.

I wonder if the guy who does my windows in Bucks ever goes to Philly.

I sold AAPL right around here ($102). It no longer fit my strategy of a higher yielding security as it went up and I made over 50% which, as it did, reduced the yield by 50%. So, I was able to deploy that money into stocks with higher yield (and higher dividend growth rates).

So there.

In reality, it is the financial markets driving the price of oil here in the short term. Not actual supply and demand.

Yes. But I am still earning a higher yield elsewhere with the deployed money and, given I deployed that money last week when other stocks were down, the % return on those names might be higher. In fact, they are already up more than 10%

$110/102 is only 7.8%.

Regarding oil, supply and demand drive price, but the real disruptive change is on the supply side. North Dakota produces 1 milion barrels a day alone. The US has surged as the worlds largest overall energy producer, is on a par now with Saudi Arabia. This has happened in the last 2+ years as a result of that Satanic practice called "fracking". The other part of the equation is that Saudi Arabia with its low cost of production, 10+ million bbl a day production capacity and pure export role has the power to reduce production to stabilize prices. It hasn't. This is the big geopolitical story. Low oil prices destabilize Iran and Russia. Our good friends in Venezuela might default on external debt too. All right, that's my drive by. I'm outta here. Bye.

Got our first broad estimate for renovations, done via e-mail and pictures only, and it came in around $630K, plus $120K worth of optional stuff we would like to do.

One cost that really jumped out at me was $6000 per room for a split unit AC/heat pump system.

Also not sure what the difference is between architect fee ($42K and engineering ($15K)

Overhead was 30%, which I guess is typical.

List of cities makes sense to me.
Interesting that 3.5 of the top 10 are suburbs, and several others are big military towns.
OKC was the only surprise. I picture them as being conservative, but not number 2.

A list by metro area, not just city limit boundaries would be a bit more interesting.
October 21, 2014 3:48 PM - dibs
I commented in the Forum. Many prices seem ridiculous but some OK. I would be wary of getting estimates this way wityhout the detail spelled out, especially with kitchens and bathrooms. Once this guy quotes a price, the details are not likely to make him bring it down, even if they should.

Be VERY specific when you want prices quoted. Also, for a major renovation like this, I would not bid anything out without them first designing the new rooms and floor plans.

Apparently Oscar de le Renta did actually do that collection of cerulean gowns..

"You're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns," the tough-as-nails Priestly says. "And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin."

Monica Lewinsky is unbelievable. Did anyone hear about the speech she gave yesterday, in which she claimed to be the very first victim of cyber-bullying, and that the "new media" publicly humiliated her.

Really?????? You were a 19 year-old intern who gave a BJ to the POTUS. What the hell did you expect the media to do with the story?!?!?!!?!?

Please stop trying to regain celebrity status by playing the victim. Why don't you just become a private citizen again, and perhaps you will regain some of that privacy you claim to covet.
October 21, 2014 8:29 PM - pepper
Yeah, Benson. I can't fathom why she would want to enter the public eye again; it can only lead to a rehashing of everything.

Personally, I don't give a shit about Monica Lewinsky and wouldn't bother reading about a speech she gave.

Even after 24 years in The Big City, I'm still astounded by the relatively poor grocery shopping option vs. the smallish upstate town in which I grew up. Tops and Wegman's were right next door to each other, and each was grocery paradise compared to here.

if I were to go to pathmark, I would go to the one by Lowes. I think you need a pathmark card to get those prices. I may get one. parking lot at the one by gowanus and a liquor store with good wine prices next to it.

Pathmark eliminated the cards a few weeks ago.

For any of these cards, you don't need it if you use a phone number to register your "card." And of course it doesn't have to be your phone number if you are concerned about privacy.

NYC has lots of great grocery store options if you have a car.
About the only thing we don't have is Super Wamart/Super Target.

I saw one of their trucks the other day on Atlantic. Think there's enough demand for both Fresh Direct and Amazon Fresh?
October 21, 2014 10:09 PM - More4Less
that's something amazon and fresh direct needs to worry about as more options, more competition is great for consumers
