"They (the Arawak Indians) ... brought us parrots and balls of cotton and spears and many other things, which they exchanged for the glass beads and hawks' bells. They willingly traded everything they owned.... They were well-built, with good bodies and handsome features.... They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They have no iron. Their spears are made of cane.... They would make fine servants.... With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want."

I see Benson's issue with neighbors fire. When I've suggested on here that charcoal bbq-ing in backyards is obnoxious, people told me I was wrong.
Interesting on how Dudley who usually would tell most of you to mind your own business and too much a nanny state ---instead (because was benson) took opposite side. was he trying to show he can be flexible?

Pete;

There's a big difference between a charcoal BBQ and an big wood-burning campfire, in terms of the amount of smoke.

My condo is very strict about the no-bbq-on-the-balcony law: they enforce it.

Er What;

Perhaps you might want to know the facts before launching into your usual meme.

The building next door is a 4-story, rent-stabilized walk-up. It is highly questionable if it is adding "value" to my condo, which in any case is worth a pretty penny, thank you very much. It is a 1350 square feet 3 BR in which the elevator opens up right into my apartment, and that is what people are paying for. You can do the math.

No Benson, the Fucktards next door adds "Value" to over inflated Condo and your over inflated neighborhood. 3500.00 a month for a one bedroom, yeah right! Your should thank them, dealing with entittled Fucktards is just collateral damage.

Randi, that house is right near Stuyvesant Avenue, on a nice block. Pretty near Lewis Ave and the restaurants and the subway. You should run by there and look around.

even if landlord pays it - they'll still pass it off to you via increased rent.

however, i'd much prefer that method as you need so much freakin cash to movenow - 1st, last (sometimes), security, broker fee can add up to like 10k

BBQ grills are ok in NYC, provided they are under a certain size (less than 10 square feet), they burn charcoals or propane (wood not allowed) and they are at least 10 feet away from the building.

Open pit fires are illegal on residential properties.

Apparently Mitt Romney told this joke about President Obama at a recent speech. Not too bad.

"President Obama went to the bank to cash a check and he didn't have his ID. And the teller said you've got to prove who you are.

He said, "How should I do that?" She said the other day Phil Mickelson came in, he didn't have his ID but he set up a little cup on the ground, took a golf ball, putted it right into that cup so they knew it was Phil Mickelson. They cashed his check.

And then Andre Agassi came in. And Andre Agassi didn't have his ID either. He put a little target on the wall, took a tennis ball and racquet – hit it onto that target time. We knew that was Andre Agassi so we cashed his check.

And she said to him, "Is there anything you can do to prove who you are?" And [Obama] said, "I don't have a clue."

And she said, "Well, Mr. President, do you want your money in small bills or large bills."

I'm sure we'll never agree on Bush's policies in Iraq, especially the decision to go to war. Leaving that aside, I have two questions for you:

-do you think that Iraq had been largely stabilized at the end of Bush's term? (Hint: according to President Obama at the time, it had been stabilized).

-do you think that President Obama's decision to withdraw all of the troops was a good one?

yes because i think we should not have been there in the first place. i also do not think we should be wasting any more time or money or soldier's lives fighting isis. do what is needed to protect our homeland but i don't think we have to keep trying to police the world. it hasn't been working out so great for us.

I think everything was fucked once the Saddam's army and state were basically disbanded. The lesson from post-WWII Germany and Japan is that you keep the state and army as intact as possible, prosecute a few high-level war criminals, and maintain things as they are until you can turn over control. Instead, Bush's people disbanded the army, throwing thousands of Iraqis out of work, imposed a radical free market economic policy, destroyed the ministries, and attempted to institute extreme de-Baathification. As any real conservative could tell you, that's a recipe for disaster. Revolutions from above *never* work, whether Communist, fascist, or otherwise.

The position of the Turkish government (and our other allies in the region) is that for ISIS to go, Assad must also go. The problem is that nobody - US included - is willing to put in that effort. Also, there would be a complete power vacuum afterwards, leading to more chaos. The reconstruction difficulties would be immense.
October 13, 2014 2:29 PM - Deleted
I agree that it was a mistake for Bush to disband the Iraqi army, which radicalized a lot of Sunnis. Likewise, it was a big mistake on Obama's part to not realize that withdrawing all of our troops would leave a vacuum in Iraq, and the Sunnis/ISIS would be back for revenge.

How long were our troops in Germany and Japan to make sure the peace was not lost? I'd say that the same was required in Iraq. Moreover, we have been moving troops out of Europe, so it would not have added to our budget woes to just move them to Iraq.

Not clear to me how the Iraqis would have agreed to let troops remain. Bush negotiated the SOFA before he left office. Revising it to allow US troops to stay would have required Iraqi parliamentary approval. No Iraqi politician could publicly support keeping foreign troops around, thus, our troops would not have stayed even if Obama wanted them to. The Iraqis (well, al-Maliki) dug their own sectarian hole in this regard.

On top of all of that, the American will to be there is long gone. It wasn't there to begin with. People who joined the National Guard to pay for college or learn a skill found themselves doing two, three tours. Now they always knew they could be called up to serve somewhere, but no one thought they'd be asked to go back multiple times. And no one ever took the mental and physical damage they'd incur into consideration, and that all of that would cost almost as much money as the actual war.

You'd have thought Vietnam would have taught us something about unwinnable wars, especially since so many of the generals and everyone else still in the defense heirarchy cut their teeth in Vietnam, but their memories seem to have been lobotomized. People who warned of what we are now experiencing were poo-pooed as traitors and un-American. Well, they were right.

How is that baloney? If we had broken our signed treaty to leave, we would be no better than any other occupying country. What would have been the difference between us and the Soviets after WWII? We had to leave. You don't have to like it, but we did the right thing, considering we'd been doing the wrong thing in the first place.

Papa Bush was a smart man. He left Saddam in power. His son had to be a big swinging d*ck, and out do his dad, mostly because of Dick Cheney and Rummie whispering in his ear. One of the great stupid moments of American history.

To what end? We'd end up doing the Iraqi army's job again and get picked off in petty ambushes and raids while trying to maintain an unpopular government that actively discriminates against half the population. And by doing so, continue by our mere presence to be a recruiting tool for Al Queda or ISIS or any other group. Not good for overall stability in the region, not good for our troops, certainly not good for our wallet, and only good for the military defense industry.

Moreover, Pete, if you want to go down that road, you would lose the argument, for whereas future unfunded liabilities are growing exponentially for Social Security and Medicare (due to an aging population), they are decreasing rapidly for military expenditures, because the WWII and Korean War vets are dying off, and their numbers were much, much larger than Vietnam and Iraq vets.

Only hidden because they failed to look at the prospectus.

Delivery of most bathroom fixtures was to be between 10-12 this AM. But they only make sidewalk delivery so it had been arranged for a mover to come and move the stuff from the sidewalk to the apt. I was going to wait on the sidewalk until the mover could get here.

Got a call at 8:30 AM that delivery was out front! Mover wouldn't respond to phone or text message about when he could be here. At about 9:00, mover calls delivery guy and convinces him to take stuff from sidewalk to bldg entrance - 5 steps plus about 40' of walkway. Amazing delivery guy just puts crates containing tub, toilet, etc., on shoulder and brings them to entrance. I brought small stuff into apt.

Mover arrives at about 1 PM to bring stuff in. didn't get a tip - he didn't cause the problem but screwed up his scheduling for the day and inexcusable for him not to respond to my call or text. Delivery guy got big tip.

Funny 12 years after we repelled the Glass–Steagall Act the Government had to bail everyone out.
