I had some great Thai food for lunch. Randi will be displeased that I will likely eat at the hotel's italian restaurant for dinner. i am planning on over medicating with a nice bottle of red. I'm looking forward to the bread here which is really awesome. I will likely have it with a pasta which may further agitate randi. i will post some photos to make sure it does.

I see DIBS is keeping 'busy'.

How is that for people like 'Pet', to be 'ordered up'. It's very sad to me that people have to do this to make money. BnH told me that Thailand has a reputation for being where to go for sex with underage girls. Sounds hideous.

I love it when republicans fight each other. Reminds me of watching Jerry Springer.
Mr. Levy is Judge Judy's son:
"In August 2013, Mr. Levy sued Mr. Smith for accusing him of interfering in the rape investigation. Last May, Mr. Smith sued Mr. Levy, both of whom are Republicans, for calling him “clearly delusional,” “absolutely paranoid” and in declining mental health.
And in recent legal papers in that suit, Mr. Smith, 67, a retired Army brigadier general who has been sheriff since 2001, called Mr. Levy “an individual with numerous personal demons.” He said Mr. Levy was a regular at a strip club in Danbury, Conn., and had “engaged in questionable behavior” with women “in the back of chauffeured limousines.”

Randi, now that you mention it I have slept very well the last few nights.

I'm finding some of the images of the depression quite arresting. A lot of the back story I had no clues about, like Eleanor being everywhere but the white house. I had forgotten how many programs that they tried to pull country out of the depression and how many were against those programs. Has a parallel to today.

so here is the latest twist in my apt saga.....we discovered that in april of this year my neighbor sold his place to his wife (she has a different last name) in an all cash deal of 600k so that they could put the apt in a trust for their children or something. that comes out to $550/sqft. our broker is very worried this is going to screw up the appraisal, the bank will say WTF why are you trying to sell for $850/ft when this other guy sold for $550. this is making a low, non contingent offer look better than a higher 80% financing offer.

Randi, don't worry. At worst, it takes longer to get past that with bank/ appraiser but NFW that translates to you taking anything less than ASK. No comparable supply so let these baller buyers figure out how to navigate around this - eg "you got the money and you want it, figure it out cause it's your problem to solve; not mine"

we are going to eat the flip tax for that reason. our broker has never heard of flip tax on condo, and the way the condo board justified it to me is just bizarre:

"The fliptax was meant to spread the burden of the building's expenses amongst all owners - especially new owners who are coming into the building for the first time and are inheriting all of our work and benefit from the money we have all paid in common charges and assessments over the years. A new buyer has not participated in any of those contributions and the fliptax becomes their contribution to the common good."

wut?! someone just payed over a million bucks for a 1br and the condo board wants to extract another 5k from them?!

#82
September 19, 2014 12:16 PM - Deleted
no i am paying it because as you say it sounds like a shakedown and it won't help sell the place. i think the condo board assumed this would be a buyer's responsibility when they instated the flip tax, but they didn't consider how that would play out in reality.

September 19, 2014 12:18 PM - DeLepp

Dullest day ever, for me. Ah well, I should enjoy the 'calm' moments.

BnH is going to see The Replacements. It's possible that I've become too old to rock n' roll.

What will you do today, DIBS, or should I say who? : P

The nice guy who works at another hotel, whose pic i posted a few days ago is coming over today. As long as he's not completely annoying i will spend the next few days with him. We shall see.

Dibs what would "completely annoying" be?
September 19, 2014 6:46 PM - Deleted
Replacement are doing one of those aging rockers back together tours I think.
September 19, 2014 6:47 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Yep, should be a great show! Playing in Forest Hills.

I guess part of the reason I avoided hookup culture my whole life is that people are generally annoying.

So is this fellow a potential f*ck buddy, and/or are you going to actually get out and do stuff around the city, DIBS?
September 19, 2014 7:04 PM - dibs
I'm hoping not to do any site seeing, really but I wouldn't mind going to River City which is like a shopping mall of antique stores and maybe lunch riverside at the Shangri La Hotel. we will go out to Thai and Vietnamese restaurants. But yes, hez's mainly here to sleep with. he's not a hustler. Just a normal guy who likes older cool men
September 19, 2014 7:10 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
The antique stores sound interesting. Take/post some pics. I was intrigued by the traditional house you posted.
September 19, 2014 7:11 PM - dibs
I have bought many antiques from there over the years including some decent sized pieces of furniture. shipping to the US is always seemless . One of the stores is where I bought all of my phallus collection. Well, two stores really.

Thanks, Stoops. Actually, my aunt's new place is walking distance from the railroad. But I have friends in the Boston area so it's handy to have my own car when I am there, and probably cheaper even with expensive gasoline.

My niece and I will drive up there for a belated Rosh Hashonah dinner at my aunt's daughter's house in Somerville a week from Saturday.

La di da, what to do with myself this evening? It's almost unheard of for me to have a quiet night alone, without other stuff to do. It feels like years! I'm confused! ; )
September 19, 2014 7:33 PM - rf
Dave, it's the New Year holiday. And as I have told you many times, I am a secular Jew and I like to get together with my family to celebrate the big holidays. Note that the first 2 evenings of of Rosh Hashonah, when Hassids run around in their big hats and don't drive or turn on the lights at home, are Wednesday and Thursday. No public school in NYC on Thursday and Friday. No alt. side parking rules either!

September 19, 2014 8:19 PM - More4Less
Randi, keep two things in mind as you and wife manage these offer decisions. buyers are fucking rich enough to offer easily at or more than $1k psf and that there is little to no comparable pad in the area.

this pad is actually not bad but it still feels like a poor man version (location & unit quality) of yours:

Yeah, my parents been in theirs since about 1958 or 1959. I think they bought it for something like $7,000 or so.
September 19, 2014 9:49 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Probably longer, even with the 1970s in there. Family friends bought their brownstones for $5k in late 50s. One family moved from Harlem. Their parents tried to talk them out of it. Same with my crazy neighbor over here in Boring Hill. No one thought it was a good idea, except the people who bought. I wonder if it will ever go down again?
September 19, 2014 9:53 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Probably a lot nicer house in Albany, for that money. Ours was pretty funky! Read: not fancy, very 'bohemian' aka minimal reno. My parents didn't have much money at that point. 1.5 baths for 5 people! Omg!

Just went out to the 7-11 to load up on snacks….potato chips, cashews, redskin peanuts, pistachios, chocolate, raisen bread rolls.

Why shop at a 7-11? Aren't there any nice local places?
September 19, 2014 10:08 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Teenage girl party next door just broke up...oy! I remember last year just after we moved in, they had a party. The girls were all singing pop songs in the backyard. Teenage girls are loud!
September 19, 2014 10:12 PM - dibs
Would have to take a taxi to a supermarket. Over here in fact, the 7-11 only carries local things anyway except for candy bars and a few chip brands. Doersn't make it any better or worse, just different.

No, silly!

There were children up past their bedtime playing on soft furnishings. Rather Ikea-like. Parents off to the side drinking and eating. And there was a group of about 10 young geeks playing board and card games. And another group of 4 gals drinking many bottles of rose. Rhythmic crashing sounds from the nearby scrap metal mechanical jaws.

'Cobble, did the Pitcairn Island episode talk about the child abuse scandal there?"

No, this was a very very brief history, meet a few locals, and then pretty 'pictures', crammed into 30 mins. But I remember reading about that in Vanity Fair, they had a fairly indepth piece about the legal proceedings. They have no court, and so a judge had to be sent from New Zealand, or I think that was how it went?
