well if we give sarah palin props for accidentally being right about russia - maybe we should give ESPN some credit re: middle east - this dude nailed it the day after 9/11

http://uproxx.com/webculture/2014/09/hunter-s-thompsons-91201-espn-column-basically-predicted-exactly-what-would-happen-in-the-aftermath-of-911/

The towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now — with somebody — and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives.

It will be a Religious War, a sort of Christian Jihad, fueled by religious hatred and led by merciless fanatics on both sides. It will be guerilla warfare on a global scale, with no front lines and no identifiable enemy.

We are going to punish somebody for this attack, but just who or what will be blown to smithereens for it is hard to say. Maybe Afghanistan, maybe Pakistan or Iraq, or possibly all three at once. Who knows? Not even the Generals in what remains of the Pentagon or the New York papers calling for WAR seem to know who did it or where to look for them.

This is going to be a very expensive war, and Victory is not guaranteed — for anyone, and certainly not for anyone as baffled as George W. Bush. All he knows is that his father started the war a long time ago, and that he, the goofy child-President, has been chosen by Fate and the global Oil industry to finish it Now. He will declare a National Security Emergency and clamp down Hard on Everybody, no matter where they live or why. If the guilty won’t hold up their hands and confess, he and the Generals will ferret them out by force.

I simply don't take the statement seriously. It is a compilation of the greatest hits of the "blame America first" school of thought. There is no discussion of the world situation. There is no proposal about what should be done. Rather, it's just the usual banal attacks on American institutions: Big Oil, Pentagon, Bush's daddy, Christian jihad, blah, blah, blah. And yes, Hunter Thompson was a drug-fueled idiot.

“Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era—the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run . . . but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant. . . .

History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of “history” it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time—and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened.

My central memory of that time seems to hang on one or five or maybe forty nights—or very early mornings—when I left the Fillmore half-crazy and, instead of going home, aimed the big 650 Lightning across the Bay Bridge at a hundred miles an hour wearing L. L. Bean shorts and a Butte sheepherder's jacket . . . booming through the Treasure Island tunnel at the lights of Oakland and Berkeley and Richmond, not quite sure which turn-off to take when I got to the other end (always stalling at the toll-gate, too twisted to find neutral while I fumbled for change) . . . but being absolutely certain that no matter which way I went I would come to a place where people were just as high and wild as I was: No doubt at all about that. . . .

There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. . . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.”

Sodium is not a bad thing, except when it's completely out of whack with any possible potassium intake. 1800 is too damn high for one meal. That is 75% of DV, which is higher than I need, and so 1800 was probably 100% for me.

...In two little tacos with beans, chicken, tomato salsa and a little sour cream.

Sorry if I ruined anyone's lunch. : ( but this is why I hate fast food, they pump everything up with sugar or salt or fat.

Otoh, if you do the salad, with beans, meat, salsa, sour cream and lettuce - the calories drop, and so does the sodium. Those tortillas'll kill ya!

Today is the waterproofing crew's last day at my building. Six months of scaffolding on three sides, strange men roaming the building and unexpectedly outside our dark, dirty, netted windows. Areas of the building became work zones and off-limits to residents - our common roof terrace the primary one.

The board is currently drafting an email to all residents to announce the end of the project and the re-opening of the beloved terrace. We are editing and tweaking.

I'm not happy with the tone. I want it to be celebratory but my fellow board members seem focused on their microscopic personal issues and are suffering from project fatigue. Living breathing examples of first world problems. Mired in the muck they are.

We need an Absolut Vodka delivery.

Yesterday made one year since I purchased my current car. Between that and my dog dying, I decided to give myself a treat, and took it in for a "super-deluxe" car wash, which included armor-all on all the leather trim and the tires. The car looked great. It looked brand new again.

This morning there was bird crap on the hood.

Today a guy came to my MIL's place to fix some minor damage done to a wall by the clean-out company (the clean-out company paid for it). The guy was Dominican, and he brought his wife to do the clean-up work. His wife had the Greatest Figure in the History of Mankind. She literally had a "Barbie" figure: stacked on top, thin waist line and a caboose that would give Jennifer Lopez pause.

I swear that they were rehearsing for a role in a porn movie. She had a tight, low cut t-shirt on and pants that left little to the imagination. She was constantly bending over to clean up. I had to leave the room - I couldn't take it.

R'andi's completely fucking correct about Hunter S. Thompson. Man's a genius, an absolutely fantastic observer of, and writer about, the last quarter of the 20th century in America. Never saw his 9/12 remarks until today. As usual, he was spot on. Only a fool could read his books and not come away with a host of new insights about who America is.

In Benson's case, clearly a q.e.d. moment.

I became disenchanted with our current President a while ago. I no longer give much of a fuck about who we bomb, invade, suppress, police, sanction. I no longer give a fuck about whether any of what our elected leaders do is illegal, since they certainly don't. As far as I'm concerned, our corporate raiders, our financial gurus, our war and oil profiteers, our entrepreneurs, our tech billionaires can all go fuck themselves.

There's a great Randy Newman song that pretty much sums up my socio-political bent these days:

Just got back from BRGN or however the fuck Mr. B spells it.
We were there for a birthday celebration, otherwise I might never have gone.
It was not quite the shitshow I expected, but I am in no rush to get back.
The Ramen burger was interesting, but once I am not in a rush to spend $8 for a miniscule burger.
The bar was similarly overpriced by Brooklyn standards, but not a total rip-off.
The place was crowed and noisy, but I've seen worse.

Overall, I give it a grade of "Meh"

I don't get Hunter Thompson and don't care for his writing style, but I don't think he is an idiot.
I also don't think he is particularly qualified to talk about global politics.

"I also don't think he is particularly qualified to talk about global politics."

After I looked him up, i would say that is a good assessment

He's not 'qualified' to talk about anything nowadays...he's dead. Suicide, many years ago.

Actually, I'll restate my point about Thompson. Basically, I think he was a drug-fueled journalist of no particular talent or insight. It's just so damn annoying that people make something of him. Again, I refer to that passage that Randi quoted up there ^^^^. He documents the feelings of any teenage person coming out of a concert who thinks he knows how to run the world. Big friggin whoop.

DIBS;

My previous dog was a Westie. Rosie was a mutt. Best as we could tell, she was half chow, half akita.

I'm pretty sure he would have thought you were a tool, benson. BnH had it right when he called you 'myopic'.

Dave??????

Did I miss you again? Just back home. No shitshow here at all. Vice Media is a bunch of posers. Can't throw a party it seems. No drunks roaming the streets. Parking available on my block.

Just home from Chinatown. Saw a free screening of Eat Drink Man Woman (Ang Lee movie from the late 90s) in the pavillion at Christopher Columbus Park, sponsored by the Museum of Chinese in the Americas. I really enjoyed the film and tea afterward with good friends. Perfect night for a movie al fresco.
