Nonstop crickets here this morning. Fall is their mating season.

FYI...The relationship between temperature and the rate of chirping is known as Dolbear's Law. According to this law, counting the number of chirps produced in 14 seconds by the snowy tree cricket common in the United States and adding 40 will approximately equal the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.

I have to go get clams before we go to lunch (no driving after liquid lunch, except of course the windy unpaved road home)

Yeah Cobble, I'm reading about all sorts of obscure things in the UAE and Oman in the 1950s and 1960s. Did find one folder today with a rather extensive account of a 1950s tribal dispute - battle, really - in a place where I've been several times in the UAE. The Brits kept track of everything, right down to the exact details of items plundered from homes. The statements from the local people are preserved as well, in Arabic and English, with the thumbprint in place of signature.

Wow.

"• The net worth of the average black household in the United States is $6,314, compared with $110,500 for the average white household, according to 2011 census data. The gap has worsened in the last decade, and the United States now has a greater wealth gap by race than South Africa did during apartheid. (Whites in America on average own almost 18 times as much as blacks; in South Africa in 1970, the ratio was about 15 times.)

• The black-white income gap is roughly 40 percent greater today than it was in 1967.

• A black boy born today in the United States has a life expectancy five years shorter than that of a white boy.

• Black students are significantly less likely to attend schools offering advanced math and science courses than white students. They are three times as likely to be suspended and expelled, setting them up for educational failure.

• Because of the catastrophic experiment in mass incarceration, black men in their 20s without a high school diploma are more likely to be incarcerated today than employed, according to a study from the National Bureau of Economic Research. Nearly 70 percent of middle-aged black men who never graduated from high school have been imprisoned."

I am aware of those statistics, Randi.
Also, the poverty rate in general is almost exactly the same as it was in the mid 1960's - the beginning of the "great society".
These statistics, among other things, are why I feel the massive, and massively expensive gov't interventions have been a failure.

"Because of the catastrophic experiment in mass incarceration"

Except for specific reporters, I have little respect for the NYT. Statements like this one are the reason why. Exactly when did the US decide to "experiment" in mass incarceration? Was there a time when the US had an alternative to incarceration for violent crime?

How about reporting the truth, no matter how many sensibilities are offended?
August 30, 2014 8:18 PM - Deleted
I'm sure someone will point out that this piece is opinion, and does not reflect the reporting in the NYT. I would argue that the worldview that informs this opinion piece also informs how they decide .which aspect of the news they should report on.

"Benson, most of what I quoted there are facts, and you chose the one bit of opinion to discredit the whole thing. Not very clever of you."

If you want to believe it was fact-filled, be my guest.

It might help if you actually thought about how these things have come to pass, rather than just lobbing your usual knee-jerk bigoted statements.
August 30, 2014 8:40 PM - DeadCatBounce
The article is full of facts. That one sentence jumps out because it is the only that connects cause and effect.
It also fails the test of reasonableness and is logically incomplete. The author might or not be correct- nonetheless he apparently never studied logic.

Is this another "fact"?

"They are three times as likely to be suspended and expelled".

From a strictly statistical POV, this statement is a correct fact. The implication of the statement is that this statistical fact is due solely to racism, and that society is responsible for it. Indeed, notice the follow-on statement: "setting them up for educational failure".

How about the influence of an underclass culture which actually disrespects educational achievement as "acting white"? How about the contribution of a societal breakdown in which there is no strong father figure in the home in large swaths of neighborhoods? How about the influence of an entitlement culture that disincentivizes self-development?

Benson, I counted 11 facts, that is a pretty good fact to blah blah ratio, especially for the New York Times.
Of course, there could always be other facts that contradict the authors premise, and other conclusions that could be drawn from the facts.
But my question is why does nobody reject the massive gov't interventions that have brought us such poor results?

DCB;

Have you heard of Jason Riley, the author of the newly-published book titled "Please Stop Helping Us"? The book addresses this very point. He points out that the Great Society programs and their legacy, though well-intentioned, have had a deleterious effect on its recipients. He points out that prior to the onset of these programs, blacks were ahead of whites in a number of societal measures: labor participation rate, marital stability and brushes with the judicial system, to name three. Check it out.

Yes, Pete, proper English breakfast everyday - though slightly modernized as I don't think croissants count as English nor does the French press coffee. But there was enough of the ham, cheese, yogurt, etc. to make it seem English.

Also have had my fill of fish & chips while I'm here. Alas, today's breakfast was very filling and I wouldn't have enjoyed the English roast at the pub for lunch. Next time. Lunch was in the "Tap on the Line," the only pub in an Underground station (Kew Gardens) and a very civilized place.

Now at Waterloo station; train to Exeter is about to depart.

What a shame about the Open. I've attended most years for the last 15-20. Since they built Ashe Stadium, it has become a shitshow of commercialism. Way too many grounds passes sold, way too many shops and restaurants.

Used to be able to actually get in to the smaller courts and watch great matches being played a few feet away. There was nothing strange about watching the top seeds using a practice court. Tennis stars just walking through the plaza to get where they were going. It was a much more intimate, immediate, personal experience.

Yeah, LP, just way too commercialized, crowded, yuck. I agree about the grounds passes, way too many people, made doing everything difficult. I was completely disgusted by the 'stores' - the 'mallification' of the Open. We'll go to a night session at Ashe maybe another time, but not this...terrible.

I've been to night matches over the years, and it was pleasant, relaxed - a pleasure. This was just not that at all. We did get into the Cilic v Anderson, which turned out to be an interesting one, but the heat and sun just killed me. I'm too white to sit in the sun, even with sunblock (thank you Mt Sinai Hospital for having a booth giving away sun block.)

Really dumb! They should have given Mt Sinai more booths all over, it really is a great thing they're doing. They were giving away cool wrist bands that turn blue in the presence of UV rays, too.

Severe thunderstorm warnings for counties North of us until 5pm. Oops, now they've added NYC, too.

I sat right around the corner from the Orangery, MM - last empty table in the house, which was absolutely packed despite the exceedingly average food (but it is England after all).

I spent the morning with a friend at the Erie Canal harbor in Waterford, just across the Hudson from northern Troy. It's a beautiful little port town right where the Erie Canal/Mohawk River opens out into the Hudson. It was an important terminal in the 19th century. They have a Sunday farmer's market around the new Visitor's center, and I met a friend there this morning. Someone needed to go through the lock, so I got to see it open up. Very cool.

Next week is the tugboat festival. The entire riverfront is packed with tugs, plus all kinds of celebrations and fesival stuff on shore. Sat. night they have fireworks, which we'll be watching on the Hudson side at my friend's house. Front row seats on the river on her deck. The view of the Hudson from her house is just amazing.

Very humid up here too, so humid it gave me a headache. It's been drizzling off and on all day. This morning stayed dry up until about noon.

Nice, MM!

I got to see a lock in action when I was out in Seattle once, fascinating.

Rain starting here, sounds nice tapping on the skylight.

One more geeky photo of the lock in action. They could have fit a dozen boats like this in there. The boats had a hook on a pole to grab the ropes along the inside of the lock. I guess so they are stabilized while the water fills the lock. Fascinating stuff.

This is the one I visited, MM. We stood and watched for quite awhile! Very geeky and fun! : )

I used a small lock once in Adirondacks on a camping/canoe trip.

Notification issued 8/31/14 at 4:27 PM. The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the five boroughs of NYC until 5:00 PM. Strong winds and heavy rain are expected. For the latest information please visit: http://www.weather.gov/nyc.

And on cue: the thunder starts.

Wow, they make this one look like a toy. Impressive.

Another friend is a real advocate of making the Capital region a real hub for commercial river traffic again. Albany and Troy, along with the cities along the Erie Canal like Syracuse, Rome, Utica, etc. used to be really viable port cities because of canal and river traffic. It's still possible to go from the Great Lakes to Brooklyn by water. It's the cheapest form of transportation and would free our roads of trucks and doesn't take as much fossil fuel. Slowly, companies that can are beginning to use the river again, but much more could be done. Sometimes something great, like the Erie Canal, which had its first incarnation in 1825, shouldn't just be dumped because more modern ways come along.

Humph! Nothing since I left you all?

When the rains came down, a big leak broke through in my 5th floor neighbor's apartment. i've been helping him put up a temp tarp on the roof. The 'waterproof experts' are gone for the weekend and left the new bulkhead door unsealed. Joy. Neighbor had already patched the ceiling. This time it was 10x worse than the last which prompted the repair. Heads will roll on Tuesday.

Need to try new german/Austrian place on Sackett.

To close out the summer, we went to Coney Island and rode on the Carousel and Deno's Wonder Wheel. The "thrill" of the Wonder Wheel is that it is so rickety you wonder if you're going to make it. Talk about vintage! It was fun - it's probably been 30 years since I've been on them.
August 31, 2014 10:10 PM - DeLepp
I always enjoy the wonder wheel. No thunderbolt or cyclone? Spine doctor out of town?

Slowly but surely, Coney Island is coming back to life. It is very heartening to me, because it's still a place where people from all parts of Brooklyn can go.

I've written about it before: my family happened to be at Steeplechase on the very last day it was open, and I remember my father's shock, followed by sadness, as we learned the news. It was another huge body blow to Brooklyn, the others being the departure of the Dodgers, the end of the Brooklyn Eagle as a major newspaper and the closing of the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
August 31, 2014 10:16 PM - pepper
Fun Benson.

The last, and only, time I was on the Wonder Wheel was maybe 20 years ago. I was so scared- sliding out into nothingness on that rickety thing, as you rightly say. But the friend I was with was downright apoplectic with terror, so I had to be the strong one, trying to reassure her. We made it, obvs, albeit both a bit scarred. Never again.

Benson, I remember going to Steeplechase with my parents and brothers. I must have been around 9 or 10, so 1957 or 1958. It was a lot of fun! By far my favorite part of our trip to Coney Island.

"No thunderbolt or cyclone? "

No can do right now, with my wife's surgery was only 2 months ago. But may I admit something: I am a big chicken on those rides, and turn green. So, I was glad to have an excuse.

I also remember going when my kid had just grown tall enough to go on the Cyclone. I think she was in middle school, and we went with another single mom with daughter the same age adopted from China. I think they were around 13. They kind of liked the seediness--it wasn't dangerous but it was kind of fun. There was a booth not far from Nathan's with a Russian guy and a game of skill, some kind of separating links on a chain or untying a knot. He got a kick out of the girls and they liked it for being something they could try very hard to use their brain to solve.

Of course they loved the Disco Bumper Cars too!

Did you carry her pillow throughout Coney, so she was comfy on the rides? ;o)

I hear you. I only go on when we have people in town. Andy will not get on the rides. Last time I was on Cyclone with nieces we brought the picture of us in a turn, I looked like Ed O'Neil who has 20+ years on me.

Did not get poison ivy.
Learned that the best thing to do is was potentially affected areas with dawn soap, then scrub hard with a wash cloth. So far, so good.

Glad to hear. And good tip! Way to keep the OT educational. Does it have to be Dawn? Will any dish soap, or other soap, do?
