Speaking of paying your taxes to support me, I noticed that my estimated SS payout went from $1,400+ per month to over $1,500 per month at age 62 1/2. That seems to be a large jump in just over a year or so, especially since I am not actually earning very much at all in the form of "income"

Flush the tank. There's a valve at the bottom. If it's your standard GE type gas fired water heater, they don't actually last more than 5-6 years oftentimes.

If it is under warranty and you call, tell them it's a single family. They won't warranty them for 2 family or more.

The new Cinemax show "The Knick" is set in the fictional Knickerbocker Hospital in NYC. The building they used is Boys High School in Bed Stuy, on Marcy and Putnam. The school and surrounding block were used for some crowd and mob scenes, too. You can see it briefly in the trailer, and here in a promo picture.

That hardly vindicates Legion's paranoid raving about Ebola. The circumstances for transmitting Ebola are very different that avian flu, for one thing. And any agency or entity staffed by human beings is going to have someone make a mistake somewhere. Should we huddle in the back of our caves because someone might screw up somewhere? We'd never leave the cave. The intelligent thing to do is learn from this mistake, tighten procedures up, and make sure nothing more serious happens in the future. Perhaps hire more staff, or not make deadlines so impossible that people are tired and sloppy. What shouldn't happen is that stories like this become the rule instead of the huge exception that they are, but then no one cares when things go right 99.9% of the time.

I have a Galaxy for work. Very few, if any, issues. About a year now. I also still have my Samsung keyboard phone...going on year 3? I'll keep it until it dies or won't function as I need it to.

It's the Frankie's recipe from Pithy & Cleaver...possibly defunct site.

Really feels like Fall this evening, what happened to Summer?!
August 15, 2014 8:04 PM - pepper
GE.

It really does feel like fall tonight. So weird for mid-August.

Sure, you could make a porchetta...

New Mexican restaurant across Atlantic from Hollow Nickel, "Flor" something-or-other. Dunno if it's good.

The sky is kind of dark purple, unusual weather all around for mid-August.

Flor del Paraiso, BnH? I think that's been there for a while, no?

I just noticed it a few days ago. Been selling comic books on e-bay and walking to the post office on Atlantic Ave a lot.
August 15, 2014 8:50 PM - pepper
Yeah, it's been there for a while. But it often seems to be closed at odd times.

spent a couple of hours this afternoon drinking wine with old friends on my deck - can hardly keep my eyes open now. austrian rose with screw cap - it was fine for afternoon drinking; and that screw cap is really handy
August 15, 2014 9:01 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Lol...I take it there was wine leftover?! Clearly, you were not drinking with a Plusa! ; )

August 15, 2014 9:03 PM - ilovestoops
no PLUSA's. friends I got reacquainted with at the memorial last week for our mutual friend. will have some leftover later, if still awake! I never drink at home and had not had enough to eat ahead of time.
August 15, 2014 9:11 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Ah, old friends, very nice. I've been ruminating on some old friends recently. Miss them, I guess. There really is something to having known people over many years. I get very sentimental at times.
August 15, 2014 9:13 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
FB is interesting in the sense of keeping up with old friends. I like it for that. Everyone is so busy, and I have been, too. Hard to make time to see people, especially those far away.
August 15, 2014 9:32 PM - rf
Just like Frankie! (Big Brother reference)
August 15, 2014 9:34 PM - pepper
You look very handsome in that photo, DFB. Are you going to do your eyebrows too? That would be awesome!
August 15, 2014 9:41 PM - pepper
You are probably right. It would look kinda cool though, but maybe too much. I only learned fairly recently that many people (mostly women, I guess) dye their eyebrows when they get their hair dyed.
August 15, 2014 9:44 PM - ilovestoops
cobble: I'm not on fb and don't keep up with folks there. I know I've missed some important things because of that, though. and I agree about old friends. some of my old friends and I don't communicate often but we still consider each other among our best friends.
August 15, 2014 9:46 PM - pepper
I really don't know much about eyebrows. Except about getting them waxed. I will say, however, that in the last few years I've started getting grey ones, and I find that way more disturbing than grey hair (which I've had since my early 20s)
August 15, 2014 9:50 PM - ilovestoops
is bnh around? I'm going computer crazy! 2 days ago my tablet quit - just won't even turn on (and yes I checked that it's plugged in and all connections are tight!). this is 5 days after warranty expired, of course. used it mainly to watch tv.

so set up computer I had gotten a few weeks ago. set power settings not to turn off display or go to sleep for 45 min when plugged in. but it's going to screen saver, then I have to re-enter password to start it, after just a few minutes. So when watching something, I have to keep moving the cursor just to keep it going. what setting do I need to change to get it to stay on?

August 15, 2014 9:52 PM - pepper
you're too young for grey eyebrows, yet.
August 15, 2014 9:54 PM - rf
Stoops, you should collect everything and call the guy I told you about.

My original Nook tablet went blank once. I could not get it to turn on. I took it to Barnes & Noble, they pushed the button, and it sprang to life! It was fine until I left it in a pharmacy while waiting for my prescription to be filled. Oh well.
August 15, 2014 9:57 PM - rf
At age 66, I have remarkably little gray hair. A little more every year but just a smattering. None in my eyebrows either.
August 15, 2014 9:59 PM - rf
Nope.
August 15, 2014 10:01 PM - rf
My kid has bleached and dyed her hair so many times that it looks really fragile. She really should get it cut and start again.
August 15, 2014 10:02 PM - BirdnestHead
If Windows XP, right-click anywhere in "empty" area of desktop. Should be able to select "display settings". Should be a "power management" tab somewhere in there. Disable hibernation mode.

I know, weird place for it. Not sure about Windows 7, 8, or 8.1.

Google as needed. You want to disable hibernation.

No more consults tonight.
August 15, 2014 10:03 PM - pepper
lol, Dudley. I'm gonna call you Dudley, not DFB, since that is too similar to DCB. I'll refrain from calling you Dud, even though that would be easier. ;o)
August 15, 2014 10:05 PM - BirdnestHead
Oops. On further review, does not sound like hibernation problem.

Sorry.

I have no more insights other than to turn off all power-saving options.

A story about my dad that my aunt (my mother's kid sister, 7 years older than me) told about him at the memorial:
Another anecdote comes to mind: In his youth he made a bet with some of his friends that he could cross the Triborough Bridge (now known as the RFK Bridge) by going hand to hand under the span without falling into the river. He did it!
August 15, 2014 10:11 PM - rf
Holding onto the bottom of the bridge with his hands and moving from one end to the other by putting one hand over the other. Like a monkey.
Edited at August 15, 2014 10:11 PM
August 15, 2014 10:15 PM - rf
Like this, except that the bridge is 2,780 feet long.
August 15, 2014 10:17 PM - pepper
That's pretty amazing, rf? Did he win anything other than bragging rights from the bet?

I had heard the story long, long ago and forgot it until my aunt mentioned it. I'm sure there was some money but not too much--he wasn't a gambler, not at all.

My dad had a bunch of friends from childhood that were friends forever. The last of them died the same day he did.
August 15, 2014 10:20 PM - rf
Yes, they still have monkey bars.
August 15, 2014 10:22 PM - rf
I imagine he just did one part of the bridge, like from the Bronx to Manhattan or Queens to the Bronx. But still, that's a lot of hand-over-hand!
August 15, 2014 10:31 PM - pepper
Indeed. An amazing feat! Ah, the folly of youth.
August 15, 2014 10:34 PM - ilovestoops
rf: that story is truly amazing! too bad no digital cameras at the time to record it

bnh: found some additional power settings (win 7 - found in the screensaver tab) - hibernation was disabled and I had set it to sleep and display off at 45 min; finally noticed where set for screen saver to start after 1 minute! it wasn't set that way when I first set it up so I must have done something that changed it. seems to be working ok now. thanks!
August 15, 2014 11:19 PM - sixyearsandcounting
Wow, rf, that is amazing (and sounds absolutely insane!). Today the NYPD would be called out in force, no doubt. I've always been afraid of heights, at least in exposed spaces.
August 15, 2014 11:36 PM - ilovestoops
hey, 6yrs - the other day you mentioned that it was humid there - had no idea it was ever humid. sounds unbearable to have high humidity when temps are so high.

My glasses fog up every time I walk outside, stoops.

LOL:
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/08/13/wife-of-top-texas-anti-gay-crusader-divorces-him-to-be-with-lesbian-partner/

"The leader of an anti-LGBT group who has joined with Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to ban same-sex marriage had his own marriage end after his wife began a romantic relationship with another woman.

According to court documents obtained by Lone Star Q, Corrine Morris Rodriguez Saenz was dating another woman when she filed for divorce from Jonathan Saenz in 2011. Less than six months later, Jonathan Saenz took over as the president of the state’s top anti-gay group, Texas Values."

OMG OMG - I hope someone sees this and reposts tomorrow:

http://nypost.com/2014/08/14/club-kid-killer-mentoring-others-relishing-return-to-nyc/

"And then, of course, there’s Brooklyn. The mercurial East Village spirit of the ’80s and ’90s has hopped over the bridge to Williamsburg. Walking on Bedford Avenue to attend a meeting at Vice magazine, I was blown away by the super-fabulous trendiness of it all. The people aren’t beautiful in that old stereotypical way, but dripping with style and charisma. Everything about them breathes, “You have to live here, or else you’re not cool.”

Just when I thought I'd heard it all, a former student reports that his subletter left behind a dead bat in the closet.
