yesterday when people here busy cursing each other out and using vulgarities, I was having Norman Rockwell day. Absolutely (or 'Totally' if want to use other generation's language) weather for the kayak in Tivoli Bays and out into Hudson River to Magdalene Island. Colorful and interesting shape mushrooms growing along mossy path (no -- I did not try to smoke them) -- and then wild blueberry picking. Clear and open views to west to the Catskill Mountains.....blue skies...wonderful breeze.
Back to the house - and we ate dinner on dock down by lake. We had fire in the 'chiminea' on the dock and made S'mores (I didn't have one- I don't like marshmallow nor .graham crackers).
The kayak was with the friend's teenager and back at house joined by his younger brother(teenager) and the uncle.

Sounds beautiful, Pete. And thank you for admitting you don't like S'mores. I don't either, and for the same reason. Every time I tell people that they look at me strangely. Just give me the Hershey bar, and I'm fine. I really don't like marshmallows.

Whenever I'm driving upstate on the thruway, I never get tired of seeing the mountains on the horizon, near Kingston. They are incredibly beautiful, no matter what the season.

Gm.

Pete- you don't fucking smoke mushrooms, you eat them or make tea. I always preferred tea because it was easier to dose out. The psilocybin is not evenly distributed on the fungus so if you just eyeball it and split them up, most likely someone is going to get more/less than the other guy.

I drove all around Ireland in 1997. I found the food to be good. Lots of great fish and ostrich a few times. I'm sure it has gotten a lot better since then. In fact, there are now two Irish chefs based in Ireland on Food Network and Cooking Channel.

Canada is a huge country by land area, but not really by population.
The Canadian Rockies between Calgary and Vancouver are amazing to see.

NYC could get rid of litter like it (mostly) got rid of graffiti, but everyone would be up in arms over police activity it would take to get there.

"NYC could get rid of litter like it (mostly) got rid of graffiti, but everyone would be up in arms over police activity it would take to get there."

It's referred to as "the last mile" as in the telecom system….that last "mile" of getting anything done to 100% completion is incredibly expensive and probably not somethign society will put up with given the ramifications and unintended consequences (of a police state)

How about smokers who throw their butts in the gutter?
When moved here, I was really shocked at how common it was, including with people who I thought would know better.

Not only is it nasty litter, it reinforces an atmosphere where throwing trash on the ground is acceptable.

"with trash cans on nearly every corner, littering truly makes no sense here. i just don't understand it."

I do. It's just inconsiderate behaviour that is learned at home. Kids (and adults) come out of the bodega with their bag of crap food, eat it and just drop the wrapper/bag wherever they finish it. And of course smokers are entitled to drop their butts anywhere

Snaps, you could buy a backpack and some iron-on letters and personalize it that way. They could be small letters, so it's not "look at me". You could always put them on the back side, facing inwards, if too much info was a problem. Kids always need backpacks.

I like buying my nephew science-based toys. They aren't personalized, but there are some great ones out there depending on his interests. They are often less than $30.

Since 9/11, corner garbage cans have been getting scarcer and scarcer.

Hey gutter is where you're *supposed* to throw cigarette butts! They have these big sweepy cleany trucks that come by periodically and gather them up. Those trucks will not cease coming if people stop throwing butts in the gutter, so there's no real marginal cost involved. Save your approbations for jerks who throw theirs on the sidewalk.

Sewer grates are good places for butts too.

Butts in garbage cans means lots of garbage can fires.

Glarg.

haha The Rock IS a surprisingly good actor! BNH, i have also heard that the new Luc Besson movie with Scarjo in it is not good but weird and fun and fast. called "Lucy".

July 25, 2014 10:04 AM - Deleted
from a review

“Lucy” is really something of a stunt, an excuse for a character to develop a higher power for genre purposes. Any time a character has to address the philosophical ideas in the plot, the picture stalls: Besson is clearly more at home with his visual wit, like a strikingly realistic car chase that defies every law of safety. Lucy's brain capacity keeps popping up onscreen in big numbers—20%, 40%—building to that climax. And when it arrives, it's complete Looney Tunes, a whirling fantasia of effects and images that begins to bend the fabric of space and time as even Morgan Freeman looks on, flummoxed. It's almost as if Lucy herself is trying to escape her own movie. It's as if Besson himself knows that he, like other filmmakers, are better than this, better than the CGI orgy, better than the endless brawls, better than the tacky genre-defining one-on-one confrontations. You dumb humans and your popguns.

During my road warrior days, I was able to sleep on any flight, almost on command. Many times the aircraft had not even lifted off the runway and I was out. In my case, the reason was that I could mentally relax on a plane. Most times I'm constantly thinking about tasks that need to be done. I never worked on a plane, however, and hence I was able to read a book or the newspaper with a clear mind. I usually was on the second page and then I was out.

http://thecable.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2014/07/25/exclusive_freshman_congressman_mistakes_senior_government_officials_for_foreigners

In an intensely awkward congressional hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday, freshman Rep. Curt Clawson misidentified two senior U.S. government officials as representatives of the Indian government.
The two officials, Nisha Biswal and Arun Kumar, are Americans who hold senior positions at the State Department and Commerce Department, respectively. Although both Biswal and Kumar were introduced as U.S. officials by the chairman of the Asia and Pacific subcommittee, Clawson repeatedly asked them questions about "your country" and "your government," in reference to the state of India.

One of the buildings I manage is pretty big (150,000 feet) and has a large gym (= lots of hot Jersey babes in leotards!). The property has a litter problem, and we constantly have to scrape gum off the sidewalk at the main entrance. When I was talking with the owner of the cleaning service that we use as to how to address the issue, he suggested that we take away all the waste baskets, and there is something to that argument. There is some truth to the statement that litter baskets beget litter. When I go there, I can see that almost every patron of the gym has breakfast or lunch on the way there, and then carries it to the waste basket and chucks it. If it misses, some percentage are too lazy to pick it up. Same with the gum.

I believe the MTA has implemented the no waste basket policy in some stations and found it to be effective. People take their trash with them. Unfortunately, the owner of my building did not agree.

I found a good dealer from Queens to buy my MIL's and FIL' stuff. Today we reached an agreement on their tochtkes (sp?). He was willing to take them all off my hand for a single price. Next we're going to negotiate on the cameras. He had an old Rolleiflex movie camera, the Minox "spy" camera and some Carl Zeiss binoculars. I have to find someone else to look at their art. For a while she worked for the Grand Central Art gallery and has a few originals, but I'm not sure of their value. In a whole other category is their collection of baseball cards and yearbooks, some almost 50 years old. I'll deal with them later, as that is a whole different market.

lp: I saw yesterday that you're watching mad men - I've been watching on netflix for the last few months and totally agree about Jon Hamm - almost perfect!!! also find it very interesting to see the historic references to real stuff, the dress & hairdos, and the "place" of women & blacks.

Back in 1976, the icelandic flight (to Brussells I think), with a stopover to shop in Reykjavik, was the cheapest way to get to Europe. by a year later, the first budget no-frills (meaning no meal) flights had started. I was on one of the first ones. forgot the name - didn't last long.

Had a great pickle (nh) in Portland - seemed to be half sour, with a bit of spice. Delish. (I repeat, nh!)
July 25, 2014 7:35 PM - dibs
You can make them quickly which need to be refrigerated or you can do the real, longer pickling process where they can be stored in jard for literally a few years, without refrigeration.

dh: congrats on the raise that's a huge amount especially given the low inflation rate!

benson: I know you must have spent a lot of time researching places to sell you MIL's stuff, but would you mind sharing the places you found? I'd love to sell several things to one entity rather than listing each separately on-line and having to keep checking for responses.
July 25, 2014 7:39 PM - pepper
Yes, Stoops. The cukes are remarkably easy to grow. They just need something to climb on a bit, but they are easy to train...

Stoops. I found this guy the old-fashioned way: the classifieds in a local paper! His name is Ray, and his telephone number is 718-825-5631. As I wrote, he lives in Queens, and he will come to your house to evaluate your stuff. He knows his business: he has a warehouse where he stores his stuff, and he was telling me that he makes a circuit of about 10 shows a month, and he know what moves in each market.

Yes, for business. It's very pretty there. Good vibe, although we never ventured into very dense hipster territory. Supposedly it doesn't rain much during the summer, although it rained 2 days while we were there.

RC and I had dinner on the rooftop of Fornino at Pier 6. The weather was perfect and the view was wonderful.
Good pizza and a simple but excellent Caesar Salad. The pitcher of sangria was also very nice.
There were a number of young kids around having a good time, and with being outside their noise was not bothersome.
July 25, 2014 10:26 PM - BoerumHillScott
The thing I remember most about walking around different Portland neighborhoods was how almost everything was covered in a layer of moss/fungus.
July 25, 2014 10:28 PM - RowerChick
Fornino's for dinner tonight.
Sitting up top eating pizza & Caesar salad, washing it down with a pitcher of sangria.
Then walking up the park to the bouncy bridge and then zig zagging our way back home.
Very content.

We saw a couple of Portlandia hipster specimens in isolation, roaming amongst the more down to earth seeming folks, but not in hipster groups. Not on purpose, just how it worked out this trip...
July 25, 2014 10:38 PM - pepper
How late is Fornino open? I was in BBP last Sunday afternoon for a walk, and it was a bit of an unbearable mob scene. I bet it is much nicer in the evening...
July 25, 2014 10:42 PM - BoerumHillScott
We got there around 6:45, and it was manageable but filling up.
I think they are open until midnight on weekends.

Good night, all.

It doesnt look that packed during the week during rush hour the few times I accidently glance down at it from above. Normally I cover my eyes with my hands if I am staring in that direction so I'm not assaulted visually by that hideous monstrosity of a shit cube carousel dedicated to some nobody loser name Jane.

I pray to Mother Earth that she sends a tidal wave to wash it away. It's THAT bad.

But I don't know if they were Breadknots, rob. I think most of them actually come from the Pacific Northwest area. Or can Breadknots come from there too? I thought they were from "fly-over country"? I'm still trying to figure out the definition...

The Pacific Northwest gets the runaway poor breadknots, NYC gets the wealthy ones. Portland gets a heroin epidemic, we get an artisinal fart sandwich epidemic :/

Pepper;

Have you ever noticed that you tend to end your statement this way....

Anyway, for your edification:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pajama_Boy

Key takeaway: "for many - arguably most - Americans, this guy is hipster douchitude on a cracker,"

However, note the following (timely!):

"Writer Jay Michaelson, in The Jewish Daily Forward, wrote that criticism of "Pajama Boy" was anti-Semitic"
July 25, 2014 11:47 PM - pepper
Yes, Benson. I am aware of my ellipsis problem. I can't tell you how many of them I delete; but when it gets late, I tend not to care as much... ;o)
