DIBS and fellow Rhomboids;

With President Obama imploding:

http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/212098-obama-the-pariah

and the Republicans poised to take over the Senate, our friends are resorting to trying to find "gotcha" moments:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2014/07/14/democrats_scour_records_for_provocative_comments_123304.html

And say, isn't it good to know that Chelsea Clinton isn't motivated by money? I guess one can make such smug statements, when mommy and daddy are paying you $75K per speech via their "foundation".

OK, those are my political bombs for the week. Felt good to get them out.

Randi;

a) Buying my daughter an apartment with my own money is not nepotism. Look up the meaning of the word.

b) A charitable foundation is supposed to be run by a certain set of charitable and fiduciary standards. I would defy you or anyone to tell me that Chelsea's being paid $75,000 per speech meets those standards. Her being paid that fee IS nepotism.

c) My daughter appreciates the gift, and is not running around making holier-than-thou statements to the press about money.

whatever, i chose the wrong word. point is- parents help their children out. your point C is also dumb becuase who are you to say chelsea doesn't appreciate it? plus as far as i know your daughter makes zero statements of any nature, so i do not see the relevance there. you don't like the clintons, good for you and sorry you will have to suffer through 4-8 years of another clinton presidency.

and i am not so educated on your point B, but a little googling tells me this:

http://mediamatters.org/blog/2014/07/13/nyts-maureen-dowd-theres-something-unseemly-abo/200086

"Even after paying Clinton's fee, which she has noted goes to the Clinton Foundation, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Foundation expects to profit from an upcoming Hillary Clinton speech. Dowd failed to mention that point, or the fact that the evidence-free claim that Clinton has not been truthful about the donation of the fees comes from America Rising PAC, a Republican-aligned opposition research outfit.

Dowd's criticisms of Chelsea and Hillary Clinton over speaking fees that are donated to a charitable foundation are largely in line with Dowd's take on Hillary Clinton over the years.

According to a June 18 Media Matters report, 72 percent of 195 columns authored by Dowd about Hillary Clinton since November 1993 had a negative bent. Among the repetitious tropes used by Dowd, she often accused Clinton of being an enemy to or betraying feminism (35 columns, 18 percent of those studied), power-hungry (51 columns, 26 percent), unlikeable (9 columns, 5 percent), or phony (34 columns, 17 percent)."

Yes, almost any parent will do whatever they can to help out their children. No one will dispute that. Most parents do it with their own money and through legitimate means. If you think the Clintons' move was legitimate, fine. I believe most Americans think otherwise.

We'll see about a Clinton presidency. Her book tour has been "less than spectacular", shall we say? Also, I think Americans are getting tired of political dynasties, be it the Clintons or the Bushes.

Also, there's more and more talk of Mitt Romney making a run for it again. Though I'm not crazy about Romney, I could see the appeal: the guy knows how to get things done. I hope all of those Republicans on Benson's list run. It will be entertaining. I'd especially love to hear Bobby Jindal try to convince the nation to vote for him after he blocked federal funding of health care from coming into Louisiana for no other reason than rabid opposition to Obama. He runs a state that would sink into the ocean if it weren't for federal money propping them up, the state is on the bottom of just about every national list of good things, like education, and he's going to deny poor people health care by not expanding medicaid, thereby making things worse. Which the feds were going to pay for, not the state. Should make for an interesting campaign. Go for it, Bobby.

I don't think Warren could win a general election, no more than a Tea Party candidate could.

I don't think Jindal could handle a national stage well for several reasons, including very poor relationship with the press. He allows reporters almost no access to him or his staff, does not do questions, and has a record of forcing the press to go go court in order to get public records.

"I'd especially love to hear Bobby Jindal try to convince the nation to vote for him after he blocked federal funding of health care from coming into Louisiana"

He didn't block it, he opted not to participate, a choice the ACA provided. Something like 30+ states have opted not to participate, and as far as I know, there's been no political fallout from their decision. If you have data that shows otherwise, I'd be pleased to see it.

Perhaps the choice of whether to opt in or out of a life saving health insurance opportunity should have been a choice for the people of the state, not "I got mine" Jindal. It's just the beginning of a long list of paternalistic choices he's made for his state. I wouldn't want to see him running the country. Any of the men on that list would be a disaster. Christie is the best of the bunch, but he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell. He'll be eviscerated by the far right.

The federal government used to provide a lot of funding for public housing and many PJ's were built under that premise. Then lo and behold, they turned off the spigot. With a debt of $17 trillion and counting, I don't blame any governor for thinking long and hard about jumping into the Medicaid expansion.

play music, make phone calls (cars have built in microphones now, somewhere in the dash or ceiling above driver's head i guess), hear directions from navigation app., etc. no charging through bluetooth.
July 14, 2014 3:40 PM - rf
Stoops, it's not to charge the phone, it's so you can use it hands-free, since it's illegal otherwise (to say nothing of unsafe!). Also if you have music on your phone you can play it to the car speakers.

July 14, 2014 4:28 PM - Partridge
I would warn against owning a VW. Not because there aren't great, they are. My Jetta was a pleasure in every way other than true cost of vehicle ownership. Once warranty is over, the repair costs are prohibitive. And not twice as much as it would be on an American or Japanese car - more like 3 or 4 times as much. Leasing new solves that problem.

Just back from the bank. Now to empty the Jetta and say my goodbyes.

rf, it just happened. I looked online and read every review of all the cars in the running. There was something "wrong" with each one. And then you sit in a brand new car with all the bells and whistles and it is a few bucks more than what you were ready to spend for an old car with 50K miles on it and I just couldn't justify not spending the extra. I felt like there was going to be zero excitement in anything else.

I am reaching rob-going-to-SC levels of indecisiveness on airline tix for my Christmas trip home from Abu Dhabi to San Diego. Here are the options, with some advantages/disadvantages:

A) Abu Dhabi to London to LAX, 22 hrs 45 mins + Amtrak to San Diego. Good: get to fly on an A380 for the first time from London to LAX; this is also the cheapest option. Bad: Have to get to Amtrak station in LA, then Amtrak ride on the coast is beautiful but will probably get me home later than...

B) Abu Dhabi to London to San Diego, 26 hrs 15 mins. Good: get to fly direct from London to San Diego, only one layover. Bad: long layover, more expensive.

C) Abu Dhabi to London to Dallas to San Diego, 26 hrs 40 mins. Good: cheaper option, but older planes and additional stop in Dallas.

...and then there are the options for flying from San Diego to NYC for New Years, and then back to Abu Dhabi afterwards (A and C have the better options on both counts). Option B is about $270 more than A and C.

That's what you get for being so healthy!
July 14, 2014 8:33 PM - petebklyn

at family thing yesterday - 10 of 13 cousins were there (but 6 of them are me and my brothers). so that is where
I am getting all this info from. (as in the CNBC reporter granddaughter of other cousin).
July 14, 2014 8:43 PM - More4Less
I actually thought DCB might've paid off that bet via actually sending something over at 1 of the gatherings. The one that WASN'T delivered was DCB's offer to me for brownies made by Mrs. DCB

HA! That was my IMMEDIATE first thought, DIBS. (Pete's Avatar dimension is annoying because it messes up my system of only reading posts by certain peoples and two of his slipped through).

DIBS: Have you noticed that Asian women are snagging like ALL the bready nerds!? Almost every single breeder couple in my building is asian female / moonface or breadknot male.

July 14, 2014 9:58 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Why doesn't Pete like delivery? Weirdo! That's one of the best things about NYC! Foods of (a lotta) Nations brought right to your door! Amazing, no?

I agree, Cobble. Didn't dh say the other day he gets uncomfortable having pizza delivered?

July 14, 2014 10:15 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Interesting, I didn't know that either. Well, I think it's an amazing luxury. And I tip well for the pleasure and convenience.
July 14, 2014 10:23 PM - petebklyn
12000 people in the race.
Delivery seems lazy, and not so comfortable having exploited immigrant labor running around at your whim just to bring hot food to door.
July 14, 2014 10:24 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Exploited immigrants need to earn money, too, no? But I understand the feeling lazy part.
July 14, 2014 10:24 PM - rf
Pete, the immigrant labor needs the money to live.

We rarely order take-out, although Nurse Benson had to do so today. I'm just not used to it. Also, when I began my long career on the road, one of my mentors gave me some good advice. He advised that no matter how busy I was, I should always take the time to have a good meal at the end of the day, and be served - you'll feel like a human being. Part of the turn-off (to me) about take-out is the packaging. Those aliminum plates with the clear plastic tops revolt me.

What? Your take-out doesn't arrive on a silver platter? : P
July 14, 2014 10:48 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
I get tired of eating in restaurants too often. It takes the fun out of it to go out too often. I like to get in comfy clothes and eat at home. I'm around people all day. Sometimes I just want to be at home alone with Birdie. Ok, make that *most of the time* I just want to be at home alone with Birdie. : )
