Got the seafood, fennel & leeks for tomorrow's stew. And some other goodies at Fairway last night. Now for the wine.

MM- question about your old walkabout they reposted yesterday. you say

"Why not regular windows? Probably because the building was built specifically to build machinery during war, and security would have been tight"

what do you mean by this? that the windows were frosted glass? or that they were custom made for this building? also i thought that was one of the buildings that was going to be part of the new film school or the steiner studios expansion?

so -- our continuing saga with TWC. Agreement was to give us internet and landline phone for about $49 a month with 2 months free.
So we get bill --- for over $200 for cable/internet/phone etc. So had to go back to local office because over phone talking to timbuktu is worthless.
So today -- our phone is disconnected and we still have cable TV.

Bloomberg went to Colorado for his anti-gun campaign and said this about Colorado Springs and Pueblo, two mid-size cities:

“The NRA went after two or three state Senators in a part of Colorado where I don’t think there’s roads. It’s as far rural as you can get.”

i honestly think leaving NYC is difficult (for a younger human, not someone like dibs). my friends that moved to Nola are having trouble adjusting to the vibe there and aren't sure it is their speed. yes most places are cheaper to live and there is a better "quality of life" but also there are tons of people living cheap and trying to do as little as humanly possible. for NYers that can be difficult to adjust to.

It's me, boys, the other black person.

In answer to your questions, Randi - the windows were made especially for the building. Since it was during the war, and paranoia was high, especially since the company was making machinery used by the gubment, they had special windows. I don't know what the future of this place is now. It would be cool to have a better use than storage. Steiner has the money to keep it up to standards.

Montrose;

Are you certain about those windows? Those windows are NOT special, they are called "Glass block windows", and were very popular for a short period of time. One can see them in homes built in southern Brooklyn and out in the Island during a certain period.

They may have been used because of security purposes, but they are not special design.

I'm aware of what kind of windows they are, Benson. But my sources said that they were specially made for the building, and for WWII security purposes. It could be they have extra thick layers, or something that makes them "security" worthy. I know what glass block windows are.

"Of course the TLC is going after them. "

My sister's ex-boyfriend was one of the first guys to operate a van service to Manhattan, and he hit it big. Those of a certain age may remember the service: "Manti Transportation", which was based out of Red Hook.

The city did not take well to his diverting passengers from public transportation. They set upon a systemic harassment of him and hi business. Example? The police would come upon one of his vans and tell him to "pull over there". When they got "there", the police would give them a ticket for parking at a hydrant, even though that is where they directed them to. They would take an hour to write a ticket, so that his passengers' commute would go to hell.

He sued the city for harassment and won. The city paid him over a million dollars back when that was real money. Alas, by that time, he and my sister had broken up.

Here's the story, which was famous at the time:

Good real estate news all around.
California is pretty efficient when it comes to closing, much like Alabama and Texas (the other two places I have bought/sold houses).

In California there are specialized companies called "Escrow Companies" that handle pretty much all aspects of the closing.
All the forms are standard state-wide, and lawyers have no role in the process.

The joys of airline pricing: I am trying to book my flight home for Christmas.

To fly from Abu Dhabi to Los Angeles to San Diego (and then return from NYC to Abu Dhabi) costs $1872.

To fly from Abu Dhabi just to LA (with the same return ticket) costs $2045.

In effect, they want to offer me a $173 rebate for taking the additional flight to San Diego, when another customer would pay them that same amount for a ticket. In what world does this make sense?

its not acceptable to go around in blackface or in KKK attire, or to wear swastikas. fake native american headdresses are not really the same level of offensive (to me at least) but what is the saying, one bad apple spoils the barrel? and why does someone HAVE to wear one to the game? many concert venues ban all sorts of gang related colors and clothing, i don't see this as any different.

And if a team called themselves the Cleveland Catholics, and their mascot was an exaggerated archbishop in full regalia: robes, miter and crozier, and fans dressed similarly waving those croziers around, someone we know would be the first one howling about offensiveness.

I find Bill Maher and his films to be offensive, particularly in the way he mocks conservative Christians and Catholics. Having said that, I don't think he should be banned. In fact, the way I see it, the more he speaks, the better. Sunshine is a great disinfectant.

i think these decisions about clothing are more about public safety than anything else. a bunch of excited people drinking alcohol in a confined space, taking sides in the outcome of a sporting event.......the venue is just trying to limit the number of reasons people will find a reason to fight with each other.

ps Bill Maher doesn't really make films. he wrote Religulous but did not direct it.

LONG LIVE TENANT'S RIGHTS!!!

"Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe, who has died aged 99, showed courage and tenacity when in 1953 she resisted a six-week campaign by her husband, the 9th Duke, to evict her from Floors Castle, his 100-room ducal seat overlooking the Tweed, near Kelso.
He brought the action under Scottish common law which, at that time, laid down that a wife lived in her husband’s house only “by licence”. The Duke gave no reason for wanting to turf his wife out of the family home. The marital dispute was eventually settled out of court and the Duchess departed for London. In December that year she was granted a divorce on account of her husband’s adultery.
Mary Roxburghe had withstood the seige without telephone, electric light or gas. The Duke had ordered the water be turned off, too, but the edict was rescinded after a neighbour, the Earl of Home (as the future Prime Minister was then styled) advised her to warn the insurance company of the fire risk. Other sympathetic neighbours, including Lord Haig, surreptitiously supplied her with food, paraffin lamps and candles for six weeks.

I came to the conclusion that my car budget was not in line with my criteria. I was trying to force a square peg into a round hole. The vehicles I had on my short list (Forester, RAV4, CRV) are all too expensive at the age, mileage and with the warranties I wanted.

So, I decided to look at cars similar to the one I am currently driving and happy enough with (compact-midsize sedans) and found out just how affordable the Honda Civics-Accords and Toyota Corollas-Camrys are. I researched those and found the one with the best ratings is the 2012 Camry. I found several on the website of the dealership I visited yesterday to choose from. A few bucks more than I wanted to spend but newer, well appointed and with high value retention. If in a couple of years I am feeling more flush, I'll trade up. If not, I'll run it for a couple of hundred thousand miles.
