Ditmas Park Corner has a guaranteed comment-generating thread: should children be allowed in bars?

It seems some moron parents allowed their kids to run wild at Sycamore, and the kids went behind the outdoor bar and broke a glass, in addition to playing with the (dry) taps. Rather than alerting the parents and/or bar staff, Moron #2 tweeted a picture to Sycamore complaining, and also sent the picture to Ditmas Park Corner. Meanwhile, Moron #3 posted a video (!!!) of the kids involved in the comments thread.

I may not be around here much today - I've gotten my fill of moron-ness? moronity? already.

I don't like the test. I think it's a pseudo-IQ test. The "English" parts have very little "English," and the math goes beyond what is the standard middle school curriculum up to the date of the test. If they are going to use a test, I think they need a better one.

The letter from the Bronx Science parents seems to make sense.

There are plenty of top notch programs in NYC schools outside the Specialized schools that do look at a broader set of factors.

I don't know enough about the test to say if it is good or bad, but I don't have an issue with a handful of schools basing admission only on a test.

No issues with kids in bars, as long as parents are well behaved.

I have taken my son to a bar perhaps 5 times in the last 13 years, and 4 of those were places that also had food (including Hollow Nickel).

A Hunt to Find the Next Generation of Financial Advisers
http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2014/06/24/a-hunt-to-find-the-next-generation-of-financial-planners/

The average financial adviser in the United States is older than 50, a number that shows no sign of getting lower because relatively few young people are interested in the work. That is creating a problem for Wall Street, which after the financial crisis likes the idea of managing other people’s money more than it did before. As both independent firms and large broker-dealers attached to investment banks try to expand their asset management businesses, they must figure out how to attract and retain a fresh pool of talent that is increasingly looking to find its riches elsewhere.

rf, thanks for posting that article. I agree with the Parents.

The thing I am surprised about is that the purpose of changing the admission criteria is to alter the racial composition of the schools. In other words, some people think that there are too many Asians. I think that unless the test is somehow biased in that way, whoever gets in, gets in.

If the test needs to be improved, that's fine. The rest of the argument is just a politically correct version of racism and should be condemned.

The fact remains that every middle school should be preparing students for high schoolwork and every elementary school for middle school work. Not one kid in the first Success Academy charter school graduating class got into a test-in school. So drill -and-kill which is what charters do, isn't the answer either. Scott, dcb, m4l and I all had/have our kids in districts with good options but that is not the case, not at all, citywide.

This country needs more top-notch engineers and scientists, and if that means Asians make up a majority of them, so be it. The industry in which I previously worked (telecom components) was overwhelmingly Asian, and I had no problem with it.

Those who would have it otherwise to achieve some type of politically-correct balance are fooling themselves in two ways: a) I've seen people who were pushed into engineering flounder when they got into the real world. Engineering is an unforgiving profession. If you don't know what you are doing, it will have real consequences, as in crashes, defects, etc. b) companies will get the talent they need, and if that means boatloads of engineer imported from China or India, that is what they will do.

I will say the High School process is a bit overwhelming, and I can see how less educated parents would get lost, especially if the guidance counselors in the Middle Schools are not great.

My son's school has a great counselors, and I have done my research.

I am very impressed by the wide range of school choices, the various selection criteria, and the information the DOE makes available.

We've done the first pass, and have a list of around 32 schools/programs to look into deeper.

Note: All this is the context of DOE schools.
We are not considering charter or private at this time.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/players/luis-suarez/10925060/Luis-Suarez-needs-therapy-to-overcome-urge-to-bite.html
"Biting is an act borne of frustration, stress and loss of control. Luis Suárez is likely to have felt humiliated and put down in some way that he wanted to get one over on his opponent. Most people faced with these emotions would try to walk away and simmer down.
Research shows that the most violent period of our lives is when we are between three and four years old. That is the most aggressive stage of development, because if we don't get what we want, we fight and lash out. It's also the stage when the Id takes over; a basic instinct when we can't control our temperament."

I think people prefer asset fees. Inherently they are better since they don't encourage portfolio churning. That said, one of the reasons managers are moving to them is the cheapness by which they can invest clients' money what with so many ETFs out there. It also builds a stable, long term revenue stream. Most truly professional (and all the higher end) asset managers have been on an asset fee model for decades.

I was so impressed with my kids elementary schools compared to when I went to public school in NYC. Suffice it to say my elementary schools were dangerous, drug infested cesspools and not one really good teacher. That has certainly improved.

But at the same time, there is a lot of terrible dysfunction throughout the NYC Public School System. And definitely some of it comes from the parents, as well as the bureaucrats and teachers. I think my kids were very, very lucky to have had some great teachers and only a couple of stinkers.

Home from laundromat, couldn't post from phone anymore.

Scott, unfortunately there are thousands of families looking at the same small number of good schools. It's a game of musical chairs (or a gigantic funnel?).

My kid always scored well on standardized tests (thank you, PS130!), so Brooklyn Tech was a safety school for her, especially since she was NOT interested in Stuy and Bronx Science is too far. Tech = 5000 students. The other school she was accepted to is the NY Harbor School, now on Governor's Island, with a voc-tech curriculum, lots of oyster-growing and 500 students. She would have had much better grades there (duh!) and a much more interesting college application but I don't think it would have prepared her as well for college. The choice was hers and she made it immediately.

Scott, you may want to look into the Harbor School. I really liked the staff there; we had a chance to talk to them several times at Bushwick H.S. just before they moved and at high school fairs. I guess RC must know them too.

The rendering on Curbed is for a 714 building over an existing parking lot on the south side of Schermerhorn.

Are there firm plans yet for what will eventually replace the parking garage?

A bit of history: the south side of Schermerhorn was pretty much completely torn down for construction of the 6 track subway line and 4 platform subway station during the 1930s.
It seems like for the first time in 80 years, there will be more buildings than parking lots along that stretch.

Scott, I guess that you know that for a "limited unscreened" school, you should write your son's name down as having contacted the school as many times as possible. If you get an "A" for effort, you greatly improve your chances of being chosen. Borough high school fair! Citywide high school fair! Open house! Tour!

I know that the school's profile went way up once it moved to Governor's Island. My kid would have been in the first class there. Ironically, it's a 10-minute bus ride from here to the Bushwick building but whatever, for sure Governor's Island is much more interesting and appropriate for the school.

I was a "casual" at this great land of archives you speak of. While I was there we had the busiest day ever: 6 persons came in. When I went on an interview for a permanent job they basically worshipped the ground I walked on.

Such a shame Portugal will not advance. At 35 minutes in both games should have been 3-0, Germany and Portugal. the ghosts of what could have been and what are are truly heartbreaking. One last library comment, Mrs.M. One of my research topics for my senior paper involved digging through old copies of missionary journals from the mid 1800s. They were up in the Divinity School library. The ones I needed had last been checked out in 1910. They were in pristine condition. Nobody had read those things since they were put on the shelves.

MM, alas, CCL no longer exists (!). One of my friends, who went on to become an editor at the WSJ, was assigned to reshelving duties. He shelved one book and found the second book interesting. He was reading it for the rest of his shift and they promptly reassigned him to your job at circulation.

I was in Ogunquit in the early 80's. As I recall, you could walk up a road that became a path up a mountain (hill?). At the top there was some structure, I forget what, and you could look out over the town - it was like a calendar picture - lovely. (Unless it was a different place I'm thinking of.)

That doesn't sound like Ogunquit. There is a shore path called the marginal way that goes along the water, but no hill with a structure. Unless there was an earthquake and the structure burned down. In the early 80's I was wearing Osh Kosh and playing with Lincoln Logs.
