The save $$$ with BIG edition! By now I'm sure you all have heard of Build it Green. And you know they do discount stuff - often quality stuff. Well, I just came across this assortment of walnut cabinets and butcher block up for sale. Apparently a high-end developer's loss is now your gain. Go have a peek. There may be a piece you want/need/know someone who could use. What do you think of the quality (as far as you can tell via photo)? Am I way off in thinking that the prices seem good? Click through all the available configurations, sizes, etc and lemme know what you think of this.

GM. Snappy, good to see you are improving!!

Anyone have any local (Brooklyn) store recommendations for kitchen/dinette chairs? Mom loves her butcher block table and needs a new set of chairs. Dad's coming home soon and I can just imagine how awkwardly he will be getting up and down out of the not too stable chairs. Thanks.

Eva, try to Time Galleries on 5th and 16th. It is an antique/used furniture store. They often have a few sets or matching chairs. Older may mean cheaper and better quality. Also ready to take home.

Scott, whenever I hear flushing meadows all I can think of is that Simpsons episode where his car gets towed to between the twin towers and while homer is waiting to get the boot removed he drinks too much clam juice and has to use the bathroom but he can't leave and I think a bus to flushing meadows pulls up and homer has a fantasy of being in a field of toilets. I think rob has asperger syndrome:

As a pervasive developmental disorder, Asperger syndrome is distinguished by a pattern of symptoms rather than a single symptom. It is characterized by qualitative impairment in social interaction, by stereotyped and restricted patterns of behavior, activities and interests, and by no clinically significant delay in cognitive development or general delay in language.[27] Intense preoccupation with a narrow subject, one-sided verbosity, restricted prosody, and physical clumsiness are typical of the condition, but are not required for diagnosis.[9]

#61
June 22, 2014 1:55 PM - Deleted
A lack of demonstrated cognitive empathy has a significant impact on aspects of communal living for persons with Asperger syndrome.[2] Individuals with AS experience difficulties in basic elements of social interaction, which may include a failure to develop friendships or to seek shared enjoyments or achievements with others (for example, showing others objects of interest), a lack of social or emotional reciprocity (social "games" give-and-take mechanic), and impaired nonverbal behaviors in areas such as eye contact, facial expression, posture, and gesture.[1]
Edited at June 22, 2014 1:55 PM
#62
June 22, 2014 1:56 PM - Deleted
People with AS may not be as withdrawn around others compared to those with other, more debilitating forms of autism; they approach others, even if awkwardly. For example, a person with AS may engage in a one-sided, long-winded speech about a favorite topic, while misunderstanding or not recognizing the listener's feelings or reactions, such as a wish to change the topic of talk or end the interaction.[9] This social awkwardness has been called "active but odd".[1] This failure to react appropriately to social interaction may appear as disregard for other people's feelings, and may come across as insensitive.[9]
Edited at June 22, 2014 1:56 PM
#63
June 22, 2014 2:00 PM - Deleted
People with Asperger syndrome display behavior, interests, and activities that are restricted and repetitive and are sometimes abnormally intense or focused. They may stick to inflexible routines, move in stereotyped and repetitive ways, or preoccupy themselves with parts of objects.[27]

Pursuit of specific and narrow areas of interest is one of the most striking features of AS.[1] Individuals with AS may collect volumes of detailed information on a relatively narrow topic such as weather data or star names, without necessarily having a genuine understanding of the broader topic.[1][9]

rf: funny cartoon!

snappy: bignyc has gotten more expensive but there are still deals - don't know about the kitchen you mentioned but they usually have several kitchens of different quality. remember, I got my entire kitchen from big plus a few extra cabinets that I added casters to and use for bedside tables & coffee table. The cabinets I got aren't walnut, they're maple and a pretty good quality (probably high mid-range).I think they'll negotiate on nearly anything, or let you take some small stuff free, if you're buying something.

eva: I'll probably get dining chairs from big - they seem to always have a big choice, including some matching. I prefer things not to match so I should be able to find some I like there.

Went to a potluck in my building's backyard area today. The board president told me that the 2-bed, 2-bath apartment that was listed for $466K - I laughed at that price at the time - sold for OVER asking. Unbelievable, but very good news. Conservative estimate is it went for about $350/square foot, which is about $30/square foot more than an apartment went for last year here.

Northern Manhattan is not bad, assuming you work in Midtown.
The housing stock is all pretty monolithic when compared to most of Manhattan or many areas of Brooklyn.

Looking at historic maps, most blocks went from the streets not even being paved to fully built out in a 10 year period.

That part of northern Manhattan has more variation in the housing stock. Some of it was built post WWII. The charm of that particular area, however, is due to other factors: a) it is hilly; b) the street curves here and there - you don't have the monotony of the street grid and c) you are steps from the park and Hudson River.

Randi:

1. Rob does not have Aspbergers Syndrome. I know this for certain because I know more about this than I wish I did.

2. Unless you have experience with people with Aspbergers, the definition you copied and pasted would tell you nothing.

3. You might have written something like that because you are ignorant, or you might have written it because you are an asshole. I'm going with both. I can tell you that to anybody with the slightest sympathy towards and edxperience with people with Aspbergers that was an astonishingly contemptible thing to write.
June 22, 2014 5:48 PM - BirdnestHead
Didn't find R'andi's comment. A very close friend of mine has a form of Asperger's. He's very high-functioning. Modern definition of Asperger's seems to have widened significantly, but to me, rob doesn't seem like a fit...
June 22, 2014 5:51 PM - BirdnestHead
Oh, there it is. Yeah, not much insight in that quote, although it's not false.
June 22, 2014 5:53 PM - DeadCatBounce
BnH, Randi wrote a series of comments beginning at 1:53 pm.
The point isn't whether Rob has Aspbergers or not (He doesn't), the point is that Randi used a serious disability that people suffer with as a tool to attack someone he doesn't like.
That is offensive, at least to me.
June 22, 2014 5:59 PM - rf
DCB, I think you are seriously misreading Randi.
June 22, 2014 6:00 PM - rf
(not that I think he's correct about Rob, but that's not the point.)

June 22, 2014 6:14 PM - Deleted
Oh shit, did Randi just cause DCB to blow a basket because? As in like calling me autistic is sort of an insult to people with it? lol, that's sorta how I read that. Actually my best friend has it. He was diagnosed with it like over 20 years ago. As for me, well, what you get is what you see as I'm more expressed of mental malady potpourri. If anything, a touch of non-violent psychopathy.

You need to learn the difference between insult and folly, Randi. Although I am in no denial that I let the occasional off color, but totally benign, insult seep from my fingertips. My moral compass ain't an heirloom. Perhaps you are under the false impression that yours is.

I can't speak for DCB, but if you'd like me to shoo away Randi, just say so and I will. I don't hold any emotional ties and do not have an inkling of why I linger like a fart here. Stop being so overly emotional, youre becoming much too much of a man mommy (that's not healthy)

June 22, 2014 7:53 PM - rf
What the helll do you know about being a parent, Rob? Just STFU.
June 22, 2014 8:00 PM - Deleted
What does that have to do with anything? I can't state the fact that I know what man mommies are, and that I don't particularly gel with them? Of course he's going to be a weirdo toward someone who views parenthood in ways that I do. His purpose in life is the advancement of the species. Mine is not and people get resentful toward people like me who can't be asked to partake in that evolutionary nonsense.

June 22, 2014 8:17 PM - DeadCatBounce
Randi, every parent of a young child should be aware of, and watch out for Aspbergers.
It is reaching epidemic proportions.

More Pottery Barn musings...had dinner with the short people, to celebrate upcoming bday of the older short person. I gave them travel journals for a big (other side of the family) trip to celebrate their grammy's big 75 bday. They're all going to a far away land. The short people are very excited. Grammy has rented a villa, and all the cousins (8 total), and their parents, are invited. The short people's handlers made a proper carbonara for dinner, with ceasar salad, at the request of the bday increasingly less short person. Would DIBS approve?

Hi pep! Austin in summer is less great than Austin at other times.
