"BnH, was the Schooner under sail?"

No, it was one of those hot, sticky, windless days, I was working as volunteer crew, we were using the motor, Captain got bored, needed to pee, wanted to flirt with a passenger. A lot of boats were going up the East River, the Captain told me "follow that boat, don't get too close". Disappeared below deck. Motored from Governor's Island up past Manhattan Bridge, Captain re-appeared, told me to come back downstream, and then he took over. Big fun, once in a lifetime experience.

Hard to say. I'm sure that business can be unsavory, if not downright dangerous. I suppose it would depend on the individual's own circumstances. That's a whole lot more money than available in other typical college job opportunities....

Even if that's the law, I am sure that at non-franchise (e.g., Hooters) strip clubs, the ownership will want strippers popular with the clientele and that popularity means that they are willing to freelance with the customers.

I don't have issues with sex work and related fields, as long as the employees are informed and safe.
I would guess a high paying NYC strip club is pretty safe, although I am also sure that the big money comes from things that are not quite legal.

#25
May 27, 2014 9:24 AM - rf
But I think a high paying strip club wouldn't keep a stripper on the payroll who didn't want to make those extra bucks fro things that are "not quite legal."

Is College Worth It? Clearly, New Data Say
The pay gap between college graduates and everyone else is wider than ever, so for all the struggles that many face, a four-year degree has probably never been more valuable.

I'm not questioning that conclusion but I'd love to see the raw data. I'm sure the number of non-college educated far surpasses that of college educated and is growing at a much higher rate. How many of the non college educated (what % of the totals) never even graduate from high school? The massive shift to party time employment for those at the lower end probably exascerbates the trends.
#34
May 27, 2014 11:21 AM - rf
From the article:
The pay gap between college graduates and everyone else reached a record high last year, according to the new data, which is based on an analysis of Labor Department statistics by the Economic Policy Institute in Washington. Americans with four-year college degrees made 98 percent more an hour on average in 2013 than people without a degree. That’s up from 89 percent five years earlier, 85 percent a decade earlier and 64 percent in the early 1980s.

also:
The pay of people with a four-year college degree has risen compared to that of those with no college credit. The relative pay of people who attended college without earning a four-year degree has stayed flat.
#35
May 27, 2014 11:29 AM - DeadCatBounce
Those statistics are troubling because they might imply that pay and opportunity are based on buying a credential rather than talent, ambition, smarts and hard work.
I am saying this because the numbers are so lopsided.

Yes, my point as well, DCB. There are definitely non college educated people who make far more than some college educated and then there is the bottom of the heap, unfortunately who may never make hardly anything and then the state supported crowd. I think the numbers of the latter two categories may be quite large, further skewing the comparisons.

There's a chart in the article showing that earnings of those with some college (including community college grads) are completely flat while earnings of four-year college grads (including those with advanced degrees) are rising. (Data 1975-2013.)

I tried to save the graph to post here but couldn't.

Yes, it's very light and flakey, not hard and granular. I get the water from the ocean, way out the breakwater. Even after it sits in the white pail overnight there isn't even sediment, since it's about 4-5 feet deep there at high tide, and no boats docked anywhere near. Ocean water is not poisonous but no, I do not boil it. But just remember, in the words of WC Fields, "Fish fuck in water"

It has a particular fresh taste to it. My palate on distinguishing salts isn't very refined. On other things, salt, probably more so.

I'm interested in making the Merlot salt but not so much in anything flavored with herbs or truffles, or lemon or lavender, all of which seem common. Sriracha flavored might be interesting.

I am fearful that my next door neighbor with garden might be moving. Even though he is a beardo with 1 year old and has bicycle and his wife is from ohio - they are very nice and quiet. You never know who could move in and throw NJ Shore type parties in backyard.

Hi all;

I spent most of the day at the VA hospital today, shepherding my father through some minor surgery on his throat. All is well and he is back to his non-stop talking. I haven't followed the current VA scandal much, but I can say that my father loves the care he receives there, and indeed everyone I met today was pretty nice and attentive.

Sorry to hear about Snaps. She really hasn't had much luck lately, except for her friends who are there for her.
May 27, 2014 9:29 PM - Slope4Eva
Glad your Dad's surgery went well.

May 27, 2014 9:39 PM - pepper
Yeah, benson, good news all around. With all the negative VA stories in the news lately, it's good to know the system isn't completely broken, and some Veterans are getting good care.
May 27, 2014 9:42 PM - Deleted
The VA Hospital in Fort Hamilton is like its own world. A lot of vets hang out there almost all day. One reason is to help out and cheer up the other vets. The other is that it is a social club.

Good news, Benson, and I hope Snappy gets better quick!

In other developments, did people see the NYT article about film shoots in Brooklyn?
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/27/nyregion/to-hollywood-all-things-hip-lie-in-brooklyn.html

One of the interviewees channels DFB:
"That has not stopped productions from using fancy lofts for young characters, perhaps dressing them down in a slight concession to authenticity. A production crew, with cameras, lighting equipment and dozens of people, often requires a big space. And, well, illusions are what the movies are for.
“I would not consider it fair if someone in Williamsburg were complaining that we weren’t portraying Williamsburg in an accurate light, considering that person probably just moved here from Ohio,” said Nick Carr, another location scout.
