LaVara was very good and I'll be back. Most reds were $50 and under. We had plates of anchovies and fried artichokes first. Anchovies were big and very strong tasting, the way i like them. The fried artichokes were the best I've had outside of Rome....crispy and tasty. I then had the Lengua which was very good and tender but not as good as the best one I had in Mexico City which was melt in your mouth tender. X had a noodle paella which was fantastic. The shrimp and squid in it were so good. We had an olive oil ice cream with sea salt that was very nice. We had reservations and got there early for a 7:30 reservation and decided to sit at the bar which was empty. It didnt fill up until about 8:00.

They have very limited alcohol offerings besides wine but I had a nice sweet vermouth straight up. more digestifs would be nice.

There was a Latino waiter who looked just like a skinnier Fulgencio. I hope we get his table some day. then a very cute Japanese guy came in and sat next to us. he had those sexy Japanese arms...short but muscular with thick wrists. But, I digress....

of course the distinction is obvious enough to any intelligent individual .....that could/would rent space to religious group for meeting or practice or whatever.....just not turn it into a house of worship. Like hang sign outside saying Mosque prayers at 10

Dad in hospital. Arrhthmia and some kind of upper respiratory infection with fever. I was there twice yesterday, he was pretty out of it and fell in the bathroom in the late afternoon, only wanted to sleep. I thought I could get away with waiting for today so I could take him to a hospital where his doctors are, but he fell again at 11:30 and I met him at the emergency room at the nearest hospital. Got home after 3. I think I need a little nap before I go back.

It really hit me how old he is when the doctor asked me if his status would be "do not resuscitate." This is hardly his first hospitalization and I have been asked that question many times before but this time it registered. I suspect he'll be ok once they fix his arrhythmia (not the first time) and the fever goes down. But he's 91 and I guess I have to be realistic.

My stepmother has a live-in aide, who is wonderful and calls me whenever anything happens. She's from an agency so when she takes days off, they send someone else.

She's fine now, after a few days of antibiotics. We went to the doctor on Wednesday.

My dad doesn't have a pacemaker. This is his third episode of arrhythmia. After the first, they put him on baby aspirin, after the second, a larger dose of aspirin. They wanted to avoid Coumadin if possible since it needs a lot of monitoring. Both previous times, he was stabilized very quickly. But he was also in the hospital for other stuff (once it was after he broke his hip, once he had cellulitis from swollen legs). In general he is amazingly healthy for a 91-year-old. Not fat, no sign of diabetes, hypertension, anything like that.

I had to move the car so drove my kid to school this morning. On the way back I stopped at Provisions because I had no milk in the house and I could park right across the street. All they had was crazy-expensive organic artisinal milk, $3/quart. But what the fuck, I'm worth it. Also got a heavenly almond croissant. And a parking spot good for the day when I got back.

GM,

Sorry about your dad's troubles, RF. He sounds tough though, and is a fighter. My thoughts and prayers are with you. 91 is pretty remarkable.

The license plate generator is pretty cool. I'm glad you are back R'andi. B'randi is adorable. I think it's great to look at familiar and now boring things through a child's eyes. Nothing like that to bring a bit of wonder back into our jaded lives. I highly recommend it. My nephew is at the fun age now, and I enjoy hanging out with him.

I haven't had "organic" milk since I was a kid. We used to ride out bikes up to the farm next door. They kept their "dry" cows in our pasture, in exchange for milk. The farmer had a huge pasteurizer that he kept the milk in until the milk trucks arrived. It was a big tank with paddles that constantly swirled the milk around. He's dip our milk cans in the milk, and we'd be off. It was fresh whole milk and the cream would rise to the top after it sat for a while. My mom skimmed it off for her coffee. It was the best milk. Unfortunately, after a while, we poo-pooed it because all of our friends had milk in a carton. Kids are stupid sometimes.

One of the things I'm trying to convince George Steinbrenner to do is to institute written performance reviews for the engineers. Up to now, the performance review has consisted of George's opinion of you. It's a tough sell. He considers it an "indulgence".

My situation is not good here. The company ramped up hiring about 1.5 years ago with visions of grandeur. That is when I was brought in - the first middle manager from the outside. The expansion has not worked out for various reasons, one of them (imo) being that they did not institute processes for a larger company. That is what I've been trying to do, but I'm increasingly being seen as a "corporate" type who doesn't understand the rough and tumble world of construction. Perhaps.

You probably know this by now, but watch out for those broad spectrum antibiotics at his age.
Sometimes they wipe out all the normal organisms and this can lead to colitis in an elderly individual,

Make sure to bring it up to the doctor prescribing the antibiotic for the respiratory tract infection.

Legion….I have a question about asthma…. What are the ramifications if it goes untreated?

Keep in mind that this is for a cat and not a human.

Current symptoms are only occasional bouts of coughing. Can the steroid treatments be worse than the actual asthma if there desn't seem to be any other difficulties other than occasional bouts of coughing?

Tough situation benson.
It doesn't sound like your boss is seeing the employees as the most valuable asset in the company.
Whatever happened to the idea of employee development?

dibs in my experience with cat steroid treatments they work like magic for a while but less and less so over time and eventually do more harm than good and only delay the inevitable.

April 4, 2014 1:45 PM - Legion
...dibs,
asthma left untreated can lead to respiratory distress and pneumonitis, an inflammation of the lung tissue.
That's assuming that it's not severe enough to severely deplete lung function and O2 saturation.
That's what they're checking when they put that little monitor on your finger that pulses. (pulseOx).

Long term steroid treatment can lead to immune system compromise and delayed healing. Depends on type of steroids and
duration of treatment.
In small doses steroids are miracle drugs, the downside is the depression of normal physiological functions like healing and routine inflammatory responses.

Howard has had a cough for a while and we just brought him in. Tests will tell Monday whether it's asthma or a heart disease.

I have long used humidifiers in my home, especially since I moved to my condo which has forced hot air - a very dry heat.

I used to use those relatively cheap humidifiers that using an electric heating element. Well, take it from your Benson, that is not the way to go. The best humidifiers are those that create the water vapor ultrasonically and in that area I highly recommend those made by Air-O-Swiss. They are not cheap - about $200 - but far superior in terms of maintenance and cleanliness of the vapor. No weekly cleaning is necessary with the ultrasonic types. With the electric heating type, you have to clean the heating tray every week with white vinegar. If you don't, it quickly becomes an unhealthy muck in the tray.

The ultrasonic type uses a filter to capture all the impurities. The filter must be replaced about every three months but its quite easy to do.

better get busy putting together that outfit. remember you're representing all middle-aged asexuals. not meaning to
put pressure on you or anything.

I'm pretty confident in my positive representation of middle-aged autosexuals. And, I'm not asexual; i'm not a flower.

Delepp: I am excited to see something there too, want to see how it is inside. I actually really liked it on the outside, and that 360 (well 270) degrees monitor outside of it would be amazing to play Mario Kart 8 on it.
April 4, 2014 8:13 PM - petebklyn
oops. I was just about to edit that to auto. That is what I meant.

Technically I am not even autosexual these days lol. Anti-depressants totally kill libido! I don't mind at all, all that masturbation was a total nuisance and waste of time. There is no need to spill seed unless to breed.

I think it's very well designed and easy to get around. MSG was hard for my parents b ut Barclays was easy peasy for my mom.

Hanging out with the short people. Apparently, basketball - both Knicks and Nets - is 'the thing'.

We are going to make an offer on the Ditmas Park house.

great porch on that house.

Congratulations Scott and RC! I know you were concerned about the slanty ceilings on the top bedroom floor but I don't think it will be a big issue. It's a beautiful house.

the house looks bigger than the floor plan suggests. I know someone who bought a similar looking one in bay ridge very recently and it was much bigger and very well renovated for 1M. bay ridge is not getting enough respect price wise. kind of like the nice hoods in queens
April 4, 2014 8:54 PM - petebklyn
you are the kind of people who on their daughters 1st date start making wedding plans.
April 4, 2014 8:54 PM - BoerumHillScott
We are thinking of a complete renovation of the basement as well

April 4, 2014 8:57 PM - petebklyn
would you rent out the lower level(to rob?) -- or use as single family?
April 4, 2014 8:58 PM - ilovestoops
nice house, BHS, love the rear deck! don't know if it's near this area but if it is, you may want to try the bar crawl & stuff:

I feel like I'm a terrible uncle. Two nephews (college kids) were coming down to Knicks game tonight(free tix from the niece who dances for the Knicks) and looking for place to stay overnight. The 2 sister of the one nephew (both who live in queens) live in shared housing and can't really put them up.
I suppose I could have stayed down in city and babysat.

We would rent out the first level, which is better set up than the floor plan indicates.

Can't they just get hotel rooms?

April 4, 2014 9:25 PM - Deleted
I say that as someone who was looking at hotel rooms in charleston for the 4th of july weekend (im going down there for 5 days to a wedding with my grandmother) and was shocked at how expensive hotel rooms are. I've never paid for a hotel room.
April 4, 2014 9:28 PM - petebklyn
yeah, the floorplan for 1st level shows no connection directly between the apt and the large front room.
Theoretically could have tenant just enter from rear of house and that 1st floor room is part of the owner
space?
April 4, 2014 9:38 PM - BoerumHillScott
The real first floor layout:
The front door opens into a vestibule with separate doors into the "foyer" and what is labeled "guest room."
The "guest room" is really the living room for the rental, and is completely open into the kitchen/dining area of the rental.

No idea why they screwed up the floor plan. It seems like it has always been that way.
April 4, 2014 9:43 PM - petebklyn
That makes more sense. What you figure is reasonable rental value for that level?

Is it normal these days for people to share with people how much they paid for a house? I mean I do understand that you can type in any address and find out all that info (which is totally gauche, but oh well), but to me it seems such a major social faux pas... Perhaps a socioeconomix faux pas? A faux pas nonetheless.
April 4, 2014 9:49 PM - petebklyn
I think that people disclose how much they pay for trailers too. Maybe not when you get into the $5million
plus level but anything below pretty common. At that level they just look it up.
Edited at April 4, 2014 9:49 PM
April 4, 2014 9:53 PM - BoerumHillScott
We figure $1800 - $2000 a month for the rental.
April 4, 2014 9:58 PM - rf
You tell us all about how much you pay for rent (and everything else).
April 4, 2014 9:59 PM - pepper
Nice house, Scott. Fingers crossed for you guys. Are there stairs down from the deck, so you have access to the yard?
Edited at April 4, 2014 9:59 PM
April 4, 2014 10:00 PM - petebklyn
No kidding? I was thinking $1500 but I admit I have no idea.
Utilities must be high for a freestanding wood house I imagine. But still a great deal.
April 4, 2014 10:03 PM - RowerChick
Thanks, Pepper.
There are stairs, and the yard is all ours. Right now the owner raises chickens down below.

April 4, 2014 10:19 PM - ilovestoops
I agree about the chicks & eggs, rc. I take care of my neighbors chickens when they're gone and the coop is nasty! but the fresh eggs are great.

I see they have started construction on Smith ('tween State and Schermerhorn) around corner from you.
That parking lot going to get an apartment building it looks like.
April 4, 2014 10:34 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
We nearly managed to avoid Six, except for the fact that he also frequents coffee places, and takes the subway. So avoiding bars won't be quite enough. ; )

April 4, 2014 10:39 PM - pepper
Yeah, I walked by on my way home and noticed that as well. Also noticed a for sale sign on the empty lot next to us (west side) that went up today. They had been using that lot for construction HQ for the big Pacific St. build, but I guess as that nears completion, no need for trailer HQ.
April 4, 2014 10:43 PM - petebklyn
also the empty lot on pacific/boerum next to the 2 new houses recently built(on Boerum) that also had been used as parking lot has a bulldozer parked on it. Maybe the folks who built the new houses going to do another project?

Oui, 'babysitting', so to speak. They're not babies anymore, and mostly 'do for themselves' at this point. But they're still my 'babies'. It's such a joy to have a little window into their worlds. I like our conversations. The younger one and I got into some interesting stuff about school this evening. They were mainly non-plussed about these tests causing a commotion. And the younger one was a riot - tossing out some very funny lines during the end of the Knicks game...he has quite the sense of humor. I was tickled. The older one has a thoughtfulness and depth that's very interesting. But I'm just a little biased... ; )
