I went to Malaysia twice in my old job, as we were supplying parts to one of the contract manufacturing services. Humid as hell. The interesting thing is that they have their own form of apartheid there. The ethnic Malays are almost 100% muslim and they hold all of the political power. There is a large ethnic Chinese sector that is socially distinct - they still speak Chinese and they go to their own schools. They are constitutionally kept out of political power, but they run all the businesses there. Of course, this form of apartheid is of no interest to liberals here since it doesn't involve whites.

There is a lot of intermarriage between Malaysian Chinese and Malaysian Muslims. We were good friends for a long time with the family of a kid my daughter went to elementary school with in Chinatown. The mom was Malaysian Muslim and many people in her family had married Malaysian Chinese people.

The dad was Iranian-American and his family in Iran thought she was not kosher/halal because she, along with other Muslims in Malaysia, cooks and eats shellfish.

Err, Ms. Google, perhaps you should have read that article after it showed up on the top of your search list. Here is an excerpt:

Public primary schools are divided into two categories based on the medium of instruction:
Malay-medium National Schools (Sekolah Kebangsaan, SK)
non-Malay-medium National-type Schools (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan, SJK), also known as "vernacular schools",[7] further divided into National-type School (Chinese) (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina), SJK(C)), Mandarin-medium and simplified Chinese writing
National-type School (Tamil) (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil), SJK (T)), Tamil-medium

All schools admit students regardless of racial and language background."

Furthermore, as DIBS and I were just discussing, most of the Chinese there avoid the public schools altogether. They send their kids to private Chinese schools.

So it's not anecdotal, Benson, if you break bread with someone in Malaysia and I had a 4-year social relationship with a family in Staten Island, during which I met various relatives who came to NYC to visit or study from Malaysia and then went back to Malaysia to marry and live?

The mom worked at the Malaysian Consulate to the U.N. which is how she wound up in NYC.
#82
March 20, 2014 10:14 AM - dibs
This has become an asinine conversation because of your quibbling and nitpicking, rf. The fact of the matter is that the Chinese would prefer, if they can afford it and most can, to send their children to different schools. Despoite the situation of your SI friends, there is still a lot of prejudice in that country between the haves and the have nots, the former mostly being Chinese and the latter Malays, who are in the majority, control the government and give themselves all sirts of benefits that the Chinese are not party to.

You played the race card first today, Benson, with that little comment about "diversity." And I'm quite sick of both you and Dave. You are both mean spirited, petty, condescending and nasty. You never even WANT a real discussion, and both of you are incapable of having one without resorting to infantile displays of personal bile or snits of self righteous indignation.

Every day, it's a battle, every comment from those of us who happen to disagree about anything becomes an excuse for some nasty little dig. It's not a discussion, it's an excuse to say mean stuff to people who used to be able to get along relatively well. I don't know what happened, but this place is getting more toxic every day, and certainly less enjoyable.

Tonight's tasting menu at Vetri…..

DI PESCE (fish)
osso di mammut lanoso
diver scallop and persimmon crudo
bocconcini di baccala
pappardelle with cockles and tardivo
whole fish “secondo il mercato”

DI VERDURE (vegetable)
sweet onion crepe with white truffle
spinach gnocchi with brown butter
almond tortellini with white truffle
ricotta ravioli with wild pecan
lasagna alla giudia

DI TERRA (from the earth)
tortellini pie
smoked canada goose stuffed endive
pajata
chestnut fettuccine with wild boar ragu
roasted capretto with stone milled polenta
milk braised lamb with mint
March 20, 2014 12:33 PM - dibs
"lasagna alla giudia"

might be very interesting. The "giudia" part most likely refers to "Carciofi alla giudia" or Jewish style artichokes. the best artichoke dishes in Rome are always in the Jewish section restaurants.

Having had goose for the first time last Christmas at Reynard (wonderful meal!) I can see it being a good combo with endive. Goose is rich and the endive, if roasted or braised, caramelizes wonderfully. Combined it is complex, bitter-sweet decadence.

I'm sorta bummed right now. I have a friend who's just coming back to the music scene. 15-20 years ago she had promising, interesting vocals in jazz standards. Her phrasing and pitch were great and she stuck to the great jazz standard composers.

Beers and babies was fun.

For whom? My grandfather used to take me to the bar all the time when I was a kid. It's disgusting and borders on neglect/abuse. Babies shouldn't be allowed in adult establishments, no one under 21 should. Not that I give a crap now, but there's a hideous mom brigade in my building who think the big lobby, right where my apartment's front door is, is their personal play space. Go to fucking park and watch your stupid 1000 dollar strollers chained up all over the place in the same lobby cuz some people have no problem dumping trash in them. How would they like it if I went and played loudly outside their apartment doors upstairs? Sorry, not talking to you randi with that last part, just out loud to the Universe.

What a sick joke. It's weird cuz obviously there's gazillions of kids in nyc and always been, but this new breed of parent is truly depressing. No amount of therapy or medication is going to all of a sudden make me be okay with this.

I played in the hallways of buildings too as a kid. But we could be yelled at as kids. If I yelled at these kids and their butt ugly parents they would video the whole thing and shame me on the internet, probably on some stupid mommy blog or worse. They still come across as entitled assholes. If you cant play in your apartment, move elsewhere for more room. The lobby and halls for which someone is paying through the nose in rent is not the place.

The couple downstairs from us has a kid a few months old, who they have been sleep training. They keep asking, and we keep telling them that we don't hear her crying (we really don't) - but they brought us 2 bottles of wine the other day, just in case. Very civilized.

The prices of glasses are jacked up because they are not treated as medical devices anymore, but instead props in corny ass mainstream fashion. I refuse to wear glasses because all it takes is one punch to the face and you can go blind from the shards.

Think polycarbonate lenses are shatter proof
March 20, 2014 8:36 PM - Deleted
Of course if you wear contact lenses you can go blind if you are subject to a high heat source or flame. The lenses will melt right onto your cornea. And then you're blind.

Ah. Didn't know shatter proof glasses exist. That kinda makes me mad to know that for some strange reason.

I'm sure you're more likely to get hit by lightening. I need a new pair of glasses for when I take out my contacts. I have a pair of ladies glasses I got for 3 bux at a thrift store a while back and they are a similar Rx I guess. They aren't the kinds of glasses I would wear out in public though. They always look dirty. I always see grease on peoples glasses. Nerd glasses used to make people look smart, now they just make people like a dickhead.

March 20, 2014 8:45 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
My lenses are very expensive, more than most people's. But that's always been true for me. They're progressive, they have like triple hyper-indexing - to make them thinnest possible, the anti-glare coat, the scratch coat, and the prescription - very bad near-sighted, very bad astigmatism. My lenses are always the most I've ever heard of. Not the average, by any means.

When I quit drinking my prescription went from -3.75 and -4.00 to -2.75 and -3.00, I had an eye exam about a month or so after quitting. I think it may have to do with the regiment of vitamins I was on at the time though. Now I'm curious if not taking those vitamins anymore has reverted my prescription back to higher numbers.
March 20, 2014 8:50 PM - Deleted
-3.25 and -4.00 to -2.75 and -3.00 i mean.

Heh. When I first moved here I went to that moonface eye place on union street and ugh. I had a -6.00 in one eye and a lower number by a lot in the other and went for months and months with fucked up cross eyed like vision. Either the optometrist sucked ass or it was because I was kinda drunk during the eye exam. Why they gave me an eye exam drunk I don't know. Even tattoo places reject drunk people (sometimes)

I barely watch news programs at this point, except some about the missing plane. I still can't digest the fact that it's lost! In this day and age, with the technology, I'm very surprised.
March 20, 2014 9:20 PM - pepper
I talked to a Southwest pilot when I was in Ft. Myers last week, and said much the same as you, Cobble. He told me that planes still operate with technology mostly from the '70s, because it's way too expensive for airlines to outfit planes with more modern tech.
March 20, 2014 9:30 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
With air fares as they are, where does the money go?
March 20, 2014 9:36 PM - DeLepp
Prior to last 2 years us airlines rarely turned an annual profit. Only now the capacity is down and ancillary fares(bags) are up are the making any money. There are thousands of jets in the Mohave desert just waiting to be brought back into service. Many were placed there after 9-11 and unlikely ever to fly again.

lol no, I've always complained about the planes overhead since they rerouted them. GRRRR. Not only did this building used to be basically child-free, it also had no planes going overhead every 10 minutes. If the rent goes up too much this lease renewal I think I am going to request to have a little chat with the owner landlord and discuss the many new quality of life issues like the ones I just listed. It can't hurt.

Ah! For my first time on a plane (in 2012 lol) the first plane i purchased a seat with extra legroom! But of COURSE I was detained from going on the flight and made to sit in a room and drink coffee to sober up to be put on the next plane. I don't remember getting on that plane. All I remember from my plane rides was an indian-american (not american-indian) romantic comedy movie playing and smelly headphones.

For the flight to Bosnia I just booked, over $500 of what I paid was an "International surcharge" - I'm not clear on who actually gets that $$$; is it just an accounting play by the airline? or do they have to pay someone else?
March 20, 2014 10:17 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Why is that, delepp/pep?
March 20, 2014 10:19 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
rob, roughly 3rd Av has been a flight path forever. You're probably just noticing it more now that you aren't drinking.
March 20, 2014 10:22 PM - DeLepp
pep, airline fees. Bosnia air gets it. Probably a fuel surcharge among other fees/taxes to pay airport staff.

cobble, airlines realized that their model was broken. Most were focused on deregulation in the 80s. In the 1990s, despite great economic activity, airlines folded and some flew into bankruptsy twice. They are no longer competing with each other on seats/routes.
March 20, 2014 10:22 PM - pepper
I don't follow the airlines as closely anymore, as DeLepp seems to, but I think operating costs increased a lot after 9/11, with higher security fees etc, so airlines have been trying to operate more efficiently. Which is good for them, but not as nice for the flyer, with such full flights and shrinking personal space.
March 20, 2014 10:27 PM - pepper
Yeah DeLepp, back in the day, when I was a straight corporate lender, I used to say that the post-dereg airline business model was the most broken I could imagine. And banks were stupid as hell for lending to them. It consisted of fly for a while, declare bk, rinse, repeat. Seems they've largely gotten better at it.
March 20, 2014 10:27 PM - Deleted
No, they actually switched flight patterns and it got really bad over this part of park slope with the plain noise. I heard it while I was drinking for years.

I recall flying NY to SF on half empty flights. Nice, as I could sit In non-smoking seat, but go back to the smoking section from time to time for a cig. Such a luxury!
March 20, 2014 10:34 PM - petebklyn
I think one hears plane noise over park slope really only when they have to fly really low because of cloud cover. Most of what Rob hears is probably just inside his head or alien spirits talking to him.

And I had that little dirt bike I spray that me and Krazy stole from around the corner (it wasn't locked up). I have no desire to ride a bike around NYC. I really do want to get my driver's license. Mostly because at the go-kart park in Jersey City you can't ride the 45mph track if you don't have a license, you can only ride on the regular track that has kids and shit.
