When I was a child, my brother and friends would sled down a hill that looked just like this one in Dyker Beach Golf Course. Dead Man's Hill we called it. Every year, someone would rip a hole in the chain link fence to provide access. Wooden sleds with metal blades in those days. Plenty of injuries but loads of fun.

This is an excerpt from an email I received yesterday from the organizers of the trade show I recently attended. I'm surprised. With a show that large (or really any big event) I'd imagine that all sorts of contagions are present.

"Dear Attendee-

We were notified by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene today that an individual who was at the Javits during NY NOW between February 1st and February 4th, 2014 had measles and was contagious during this time. Individuals who attended the show on these dates may have been exposed. As an Attendee of NY NOW, we wanted to make you aware."

"Americans are enthusiastic about the promise of science but lack basic knowledge of it, with one in four unaware that the Earth revolves around the Sun, said a poll out Friday.

The survey included more than 2,200 people in the United States and was conducted by the National Science Foundation.

Ten questions about physical and biological science were on the quiz, and the average score -- 6.5 correct -- was barely a passing grade.

Just 74 percent of respondents knew that the Earth revolved around the Sun, according to the results released at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Chicago.

Fewer than half (48 percent) knew that human beings evolved from earlier species of animals."

Randi, Do you always do what the doctors tell you? I've come to the conclusion that a good 60-70% of them really don't know what they are talking about. Which makes sense. Take any profession, or anything really, and the same percentage pretty much holds true. With all knowledge pretty much at one's fingertips, doctors' power over others in society is slowly diminishing (which probably explains their ridiculous prices), but that will probably never go away since there's a vast segment of society who's brains aren't able to handle even the most rudimentary of bibliographic research. The word research said in a british accent reSUCH!
But since cradle to grave hand-holding, magic pills, and vanity clinics are so pervasive I could be totally wrong. Clearly the government is trying to sell us even more on doctors these days with their willingness to subsidize care (which I am not against btw, but I am not going to be ignorant to what really is really happening).

Happy saturday!!! I really wish this snow would go away, I really want to start roller skating around park slope with the dog.

Don't a lot of people take baby aspirin for that? Or did they ban that too. I just stumbled upon this site when I googled what about the children hahaha

****
When it comes to marijuana and legalization, one of the most important questions
that is asked is "What about the children?"

That is our question too.

We feel that it is our children's future, their lives, and their world that we are jeopardizing by not utilizing this plant to the fullest.

We feel very strongly that we should stop lying to our children about Cannabis and trying to scare them into staying away from it. Education and open discussion will help our children learn to stay away from drugs, not fear.

We feel we can teach our children to stay away from drugs, while at the same time being honest in the education we provide. We can teach them that it is an adult decision to consume recreational drugs, and that they are allowed to make their own decisions when they become adults.

We feel we can help them to make educated choices when it comes to using recreational drugs and we want our loved ones, including our adult children, to have a safer recreational choice than alcohol and tobacco.

We are tired of hiding our own use, whether medical or recreational, while other parents can openly take narcotics, drink alcohol, and smoke tobacco. We feel we can teach our kids that drugs are not for children, unless the child is ill, and then, as with any medicine, you get it through the doctor.

We are disgusted by the toxic choices we are limited to through traditional pharmacuetical medications. We are tired of not having the option of a safer alternative for our families than dangerous prescription drugs. We are fed up with poisioning ourselves and our loved ones with these drugs because there is no other option "legally" available. We are tired of our medicine being on the streets, instead of a pharmacy where it belongs.

We feel that we can teach our children to stay out of the medicine cabinet or out of the alcohol in the fridge and we can also teach our children to stay away from of our Cannabis.

We are tired of our children being arrested and locked away. We are tired of seeing the lives of our children, their educations, and their futures ruined because of their decision to experiment with a harmless plant instead of alcohol or harder drugs.

We are sickened as we watch money being stripped away from our schools while the cost of this global drug war continues to skyrocket.

We are fed up with the violence, the cost, the risks, and the inaccessibility of the black market. We are tired of contributing to the blackmarket because it's our only option available.

We are disgusted by the capability our children have in purchasing this drug because drug dealers do not check I.D. and are fed up with our children being exposed to hard and dangerous drugs because the blackmarket is the gateway, not Marijuana.

We are sick of being afraid that our children will be taken from us because of our use of a nontoxic plant. We are fed up with having to justify our use, or even stop our use, because of our own fears of persecution.

We are done with society saying that we are bad mothers and are putting our children in danger. We know that we are good mothers, who care about our children, and this plant is not dangerous! The War on Drugs is dangerous.

We know that the Cannabis plant is not just about the drugs found in the flowers. We feel that its other uses also need to be discussed openly, and honestly, in every possible way. We are fed up with using non-biodegradable products derived from petroleum when there is a safe, renewable, biodegradable, sustainable, and versatile resource available.

We are tired of this issue being skirted around, and laughed at, by our lawmakers.

And we demand that it is time to take advantage of this valuable resource and provide our world with another crop, new "green" products, and a new source of jobs, taxes, and revenue.

We are moms and our number one concern is our children. We have done the research, we have analyzed all evidence, and after using logical and critical thinking, we have decided that we are moms for Marijuana.

But we are also more than just mothers. We are fathers, sons, and daughters, too.

We are of every gender, nationality, race, ethnicity, social class, education, and religion. We are everyone who cares about the future of our society, the future of our planet, and especially the future of our children. And we are fed up with the ignorant, hateful stereotypes and false stigmas that surround this plant.

It is time to thoroughly research and openly discuss EVERYTHING about the Cannaibs plant. It is time to make Cannabis consumption beneficial to our society and to start thinking about future of our children. It is time to talk about this.

This is a compilation of viewpoints and opinions from concerned parents around the world who want the war against the Cannabis plant and culture to end.
If you have something to add, please email mom@momsformarijuana.org

We are getting what our local tv weather man calls "nuisance snow." Can barely see it coming down, and doesn't add much to the piles of snow we already have.

Gearing up to dig my driveway out from the sidewalk to the street. The plows blocked me in, not that I'm complaining. I can't tell you how happy I am to have a driveway.

government marijuana is way too corny and cause waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many people not to be able to buy the cool shit they wanna buy. So while government marijuana might be nice on some level, it's pointless when you're broke cuz you just got robbed cuz people can't sell mj on their own anymore. Tho, hopefully they will, and the gubmint weed will just be for the cornballs and infirm. I'm still way chary of all the "medical" excuses people have for wanting to use it. Please. just admit, you like getting high.

Same thing with the ADHD crowd. Bitches please, it's just the government and big pharm getting in on human beings' desire for cocaine. IT'S THE SAME FUCKING THING.

Wonder how they decided upon 81mg?

From wikipedia:
Adult aspirin tablets are produced in standardised sizes, which vary slightly from country to country, for example 300 mg in Britain and 325 mg in the United States. Smaller doses are based on these standards, e.g., 75 mg and 81 mg tablets. The 81 mg tablets are called "baby-strength", even though they are not intended to be administered to infants and children. There is no medical significance in the slight difference in dosage between the 75 mg and the 81 mg tablets. Of historic interest, in the United States, a 325 mg dose is equivalent to the historic 5 grain aspirin tablet in use prior to the metric system.

Maybe because 81 is one fourth of 325? Likewise in England, 75 is one fourth of 300.

Or maybe they all grew beards in which case they would be completely off my radar. But Eurotrash are usually fashion forward, and beards are pretty played out. Eurotrash are generally comfortable with their masculinity (males) and don't need beards (which I read somewhere as being referred to as beards are the padded bra of masculinity hahahha)

Friend moved into apt and found that there was a major leak in the ceiling every time it rained. Landlord claimed problem is fixed. Friend put the buckets away, etc., and went home to Michigan on Thursday. More rain, and this time it soaked her mattress. I just found out that a former friend, a good friend who was not a good mother with a daughter a few months younger than my kid, also adopted from China, died. The kid was pretty fucked up too the last time we saw them, maybe 2.5 years ago. Ugh, ugh, ugh. Rest in peace, L.F., I guess, but I am really worried about the girl.

The last time I was in touch with her, I had to tell her that I couldn't find any way that doing a weekly Pot or Pizza Friday was being a good mother. Her daughter was 15 then.
February 15, 2014 3:12 PM - sixyearsandcounting

I agree with RF that pot or pizza friday isnt being a good mother, it should be pot AND pizza if you're gonna do that otherwise it just sounds like a cheapo parent. I could not be a nintendo OR a sega kid, I had to have both because otherwise.. well there is no otherwise.

it;s nasty out. went out for a bagel and a cookie and came right back. video game day!

I guess her aunt (my friend's sister) is taking care of her daughter. She had a will designating her sister as guardian for her daughter. The sister was apparently taking care of her. She went into hospice a week or so ago. (I found out from Facebook.)

The last time we saw them, my kid was so distressed that she wanted to have the girl live with us to give her some structure. I wrote to the mom, telling her I could look into a transfer school--some of them are decent. But (no big surprise) she turned me down. They lived in Monroe, NY. The sister lives in Warwick.

Just finished shoveling out the driveway, unburying the car from under a foot of wet snow, and shoveling out the entrance to the street. The landlord and I did most of it, with my neighbor pitching in at the end. Tired, but happy. The entrance to the street was the worst part. Plowed and packed snow from the street, HEAVY! I have a funny looking ergonomic shovel that the landlord makes fun of, but I don't get backaches. I also pick up from my legs, not my back. I don't want to be a statistic. Arms are stiff, though. I'm sure there are people who come around, but our next door neighbor, who has a snowblower, usually beats them to it. He's out there the minute the snow stops. He usually does the driveway too, but the last storm he was sick. He plowed the sidewalk, but didn't feel well enough to do the driveway. Since he refuses money, who's going to complain?

Was tempted to have a snowball fight today, but didn't. Would have been fun.

Just read this take on the anchor position from a source unknown to me -- http://www.awfulannouncing.com/2014/february/meredith-vieira-replaces-matt-lauer-who-replaced-bob-costas-for-olympic-coverage.html

"Once again, NBC has made the choice to go with an experienced morning show anchor instead of one of their many talented sportscasters working the Olympics. All of their four main sports anchors - Dan Patrick, Al Michaels, Rebecca Lowe, or Mary Carillo - would be great choices to pilot the all-important primetime coverage. All four are excellent and better yet, they cover the Olympics on a regular basis. Instead, NBC's choice of Vieira once again shows that primetime coverage isn't about sports, it's about people and human interest stories and how they can best script the games. Primetime coverage is not targeted towards fans of Olympic competition, it's directed towards fans of the Olympic primetime live action miniseries. If you ever needed more confirmation of the primetime Olympics as a television production and not an actual sporting event, NBC passing over their talented sports division twice is it."

Just watched awful movie on netflix -- last quartet --- P.S. Hoffman and Christopher Walken were good though but so much of the dialog was more fitting for soap opera.

'Curated'

Snort! (I selected some chocolates from a box, but called it 'curating' for BnH's amusement. Apparently successful)

Snow was very pretty early, and then again late. I wasn't slipping so much coming back from LP's, at least not as much as Friday night on black ice. Best to just hide out indoors until mid-May at this point, I think. ; )

It's great viewing dibs,
I've been following your pigeon chronicles as well.
The Perigrine falcon was very small, about the size of a pigeon itself.
This Red Tailed Hawk was big, I tried to get him in flight but I only had the Blackberry camera
with me. Wing span had to be 2-3 feet across.

I've been to Dachau, but I don't remember the gift shop. I went to a cemetery for Iranian soldiers killed in the Iran-Iraq war - the "Rose Garden of the Martyrs" in Esfahan - with photos of each soldier on top of the headstone...tens of thousands of graves with photographs as far as the eye could see. Most were very young. That was the saddest place I've been in my travels.

Ha, I totally remember that hahaha. One plus about the snow in the alley behind my apartment is that you can tell if there's been biped action going on. It appears from a glance there has not been. On a sad note, the bird nest I made a while back is still sitting vacant. Should I put worms in it or something? I'm not even sure why I did put one there, the sounds of birds chirping used to drive me bananas in the spring. Maybe it won't be as bad this spring since I'm not puking my guts up every morning?

I think I told DIBS a long time ago, at one of the earliest gatherings, that he should write a Walkabout Bangkok column in the style of MM's works.

Of course he could also do a "Building of the Day" feature, not to mention a "Rental of the Day" although the latter may have nothing to do with real estate and probably wouldn't be a day-long thing anyway...

I don't sit in that chair much. It's actually hard to get off of really fast. The vibration is nice, but I attach another vibrating back matt on it for ultra vibration. Unfortunately the vibrating back matt is more of a massager and on some parts of my back it HURTS, some parts it makes me giggle uncontrollably.. I must be doing it wrong.

February 16, 2014 4:51 PM - Deleted
Why is getting up fast a concern?
February 16, 2014 5:00 PM - Deleted
It's not really. It's just akward to get onto it and off of it. Actually it glides upwards so maybe it's easier that way. I'll probably sit on it in the summer. Right now the draft from the AC above makes it too chilly to sit there. I couldn't be asked to take my AC out of the window so I covered it with a tank top from 7/11. If you squint, you can sorta see my birdhouse outside the window.

My point went right.over.your.head.

A polaroid from 1970 looks like a polaroid from 1970. A picture taken yesterday to look like a polaroid taken in 1970 is going to look like how those school pictures from the 80s with the lazers and the mirrored reflections. Anyway, it's totally irrelevant as I don't think there will be a such thing as photographs (analog or digital) in 20 years anyway.

Serious question: rob referred to a filter for brandi's pix. a while back lp also referred to the "look" of the pix being photoshopped and she posted some examples to try to help me see what she was talking about. the only thing I remember is that maybe some pix are square & some rectangles - something I would never pick up on, on my own, as being from a certain era. anyway, does everyone but me immediately (or ever) spot that something has been done to those pix? I just don't see it -they look perfectly typical to me.

February 16, 2014 8:39 PM - Partridge
It is subtle, Stoops. We need Randi to post 2 versions of one pic. One with filter, other without.
February 16, 2014 8:43 PM - Deleted
Stoops, you need to get a roll of tin foil, pliers, and some microfilament (the same kind they fill down comforters with). Cover a pair of clear glasses with the tinfoil except for a little hole in the middle over each eye. Paste some microfilament across the diameter, horizontally, on each peeper dot hole. That's how we are all able to spot the filtered photographs so easily!!

South side of the street bad for melting snow on walk but better for garden. Your tenant must have handled it.

yes, thanks randi. to be honest, even though I can see the difference in the pix (& not just the shape) when seeing them together, I still wouldn't know that one was filtered if seen on it's own. and both pix look fine to me, neither is better or worse than the other - brandi is equally cute in both, which is the point.

and it appears that snappy, also, can tell that the first one is filtered without having seen the orig. can everyone else tell?

and rob - lol - even if true, too much work - I don't care enough but am curious as to whether it's common for people to see that one pic was filtered, or if only very visual types of people (which I am absolutely not) see it.

Looks like Randi blurred out his book collection in the background with the filter too.

another question for randi. maybe you know this because of editing expertise. All my 8-track tapes are breaking. is it possible to just scotch tape the break, or otherwise fix the tape?
February 16, 2014 9:18 PM - Deleted
Well the filtered picture makes it look like it was taken on the first dew soaked spring day with light shining in from an english countryside, and since we know that is not where the pic was taken, it's pretty obvious it was a filter. I can't tell most of the time with subtle things (dont think to think about it really). I just think it's pointless to add filters like that, if youre gonna do it then go whole hog and add some cartoonand shit in the background, why not crop 10 of the subject in one shot too?

February 16, 2014 9:19 PM - pepper
I can tell.Filtered ones look kind of washed out and hazy, not crisp and vivid, like the digital tech these days.

Everyone over 30 has scotch taped a tape of some sort or another once in their life, stoops. You could also use the tin foil and microfiliment if you get some for the glasses.

February 16, 2014 9:31 PM - ilovestoops
thanks, rob!

pepper: the filtered (first) pic looks very crisp to me, but my eyesight is pretty bad.

It just seems like magic to me that ya'll can tell that the pic was taken with a filter (or photoshopped); the same way it seems like magic that people can carry a tune!

snappy: did you get your surge protector? why didn't you think you could use an extension. (by the way, dibs link to using extension cord with s-p had a 5-step instruction list! I've always just plugged stuff in and it works.)
February 16, 2014 9:50 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
stoops, i didn't want an extension cord. i already knew, despite dave's dumbass statement that there are no surge strips with long cords (if you hadn't noticed, dave likes to assume that he knows everything and when he says something, that's the final word on it, when in fact he doesn't know shit), that there are surge strips sold with 8', 10', 12', 15' and 25' cords. my only issue was finding a brick and mortar store that has it in stock instead of waiting for shipping. i didn't want an extension cord because the heavy duty ones needed to carry the electrical load i need it to tend to have super thick cords and i need to staple this cord around a door frame - thick cording and stapling around door frames is too much work for my weak hands. and, why add an extra cord if i don't have to?!

And Rose's 'coming out' should be fun.

snaps - thanks for explaining - makes sense (applies to everything in your post!) where did you find the one's with long cords?

I really have lots to do and have gotten sidetracked looking at overdyed rugs. I need rugs and LOVE the overdyed ones but don't want to risk ordering them on-line - want to see in person. spending (i.e., wasting) hours looking at them
