Have any of you received a dropped call on your mobile from area code 268?? If so, do not try to call back. It's a scam where you will be billed for calling the number

What are you saying? Those words scare the bejeezus out of me. Please don't throw them around if you are not serious.

Good morning. (I hope.)

The poor mother pigeon is upset because she can't get back into the corner where she left her egg, which is gone anyway. Serves her right for getting knocked up too early in the season anyway. That egg would have frozen in about an hour or so in this weather.

DIBS, you took the egg!? Did you put up screening or something to keep the pigeons out from under the a/c? (Is that where it was?)

Yes, took the egg. Atually cracked it open and it looked like a normal edible chicken egg. X wanted me to eat it but it could carry disease. Put up a cardboard barrier to keep her out of that corner but it had fallen down during all the heavy wind we had been having

I keep hearing that only old people use it, but I have friends on Facebook from early teens through mid 60s, and all demographics seem to use it in similar amount.

I was using social networking sites in 2004, and developed a site in early 2006, before anyone outside of college had heard of Facebook.

My theory on the biggest reason behind Facebook’s success: Their policy that you have to use your real name. It is not strictly enforced and often broken, but the vast majority of people us it.
This makes it possible for acquaintances old and new to find you based on the one piece of info they already have.
Pretty simple idea, but it’s not the way the rest of the internet worked then or now.

Stock market crashes do not necessarily mean economic crashes. Look at 1987 for an example. The market has gone up a lot recently (Thanks, Obama), and a minor crash would probably not have a huge impact of the overall economy.

Business on my block, including T-Mobile, Vitamin Shoppe, and the Bank of America that opened yesterday all did a shitty on nonexistent job shoveling and de-icing.
The sidewalks are very slippery with the snowy mush from yesterday no frozen into a sheet of ice.

February 4, 2014 8:17 AM - dibs
I would bet that wherever a business occupies space in a smaller building, there's no formal agreement as to who clears the sidewalk, either business or the landlord, unlike all the larger office buildings in Manhattan where the landlord has a management company that is responsible for it.

Walking 2 blocks down Atlantic Ave last night, my unofficial snow removal rating is:
Medical: 100%
Instituations: 100%
Local Stores: 60%
Chain stores: 20%
Vacent storefronts: 0%

#43
February 4, 2014 8:29 AM - petebklyn
I saw 1 place on Court st where front of store was shoveled but the 2.5' width leading to the doorway to residence upstairs left unshoveled. I guess the commercial tenant not in love with his landlord.

dibs, %10 bogus accounts not reason I don't do FB, just a "news" tidbit I came across. I don't do FB because I simply can't be asked to notify the cosmos about my every little activity. The cosmos knows perfectly well what I'm doing :-) Everyone else can use the phone....

I recently signed a new lease on Smith St. You all remember that last summer I was almost on my way to Atlantic Ave. My current LL is so cheap, he did not use an attorney to draw up the lease. He printed something from somewhere on the internet. It is written in plain English. I don't think he read it. It states that the LL is responsible for snow removal. Although I will continue to do it, I like knowing he would be liable and not me.

Microsoft’s new CEO is a long term employee from their enterprise/server division.
I think they made the right decision and once again the press is getting the story wrong, implying that the hugely profitable and stable OS and enterprise areas are somehow a bad thing, and they need to do better in the fickle consumer market to be successful as a company.

So our stock took a nose dive after earnings call (no surprise there). Now talks about layoffs coming. Sucks to come into work every day thinking it's your last (M4L I can totally relate now). Been sorta looking outside to see what else is there but not getting much interest back. Maybe HR is not getting through resume's fast enough or maybe I am just not the fit for these jobs. I figured I would be a shoe in for some of them.

On the positive note, all is well in personal life. Vaca planned in 3 weeks.

Sorry to hear that. As you remember I was in the same situation a couple of years ago. My main advice to you is to work your network of friends and associates. Thanks Benson. I realize that. I do have a couple of very solid contacts who will help me land a job if need be. Definitely keeping in touch with my contacts outside of my workplace.

M4L, am open to be anywhere in US or the world. I am fairly mobile. No kids in tow, wifey doesn't work right now and I don't own any real estate anywhere so fairly easy for me to pick up and go back to NYC or LA or where ever there is a good job and opportunity. Preference would be around NYC/Jersey area but doesn't matter honestly. I applied for some jobs in Cali, CT, NJ, PA, etc.

I am so thrilled to be out of telecom. I had enough of living in a post-bubble apocalypse industry, watching it especially dry up on the east coast. It's great to be in an industry that is robust and very much centered in NYC.
#87
February 4, 2014 11:38 AM - Kensingtonian
Yeah M4L. I am a planner and not a risk taker so can't afford to stay on board and see where it goes if another job comes around that is not a demotion. Wifey doesn't work and is looking around here so it would difficult if I were to lose a job now. If she worked full time, I would be in a little better position mentally because then I would be able to get a job paying less and we would still be fine financially. Our cost of living here is not bad so two people on very average professional salaries (say 50-60K each) can live fairly well here.

February 4, 2014 1:52 PM - Deleted
Dominica

That's the one.
February 4, 2014 2:00 PM - sixyearsandcounting
I did a report on Dominica in junior high. The PM, Mary Eugenia Charles, was known as the Iron Lady of the Caribbean and was a major player in encouraging Reagan to invade Grenada in 1983. I remember reading a book about Roseau, the capital city, and I also remember that there is a "Boiling Lake" somewhere in the mountains (which stopped boiling a few years back) and the last Carib Indian reservation.

Benson will be the first person I've known to actually go to Dominica, so I look forward to hearing his impressions. Thanks to my schooling it's been on my bucket list.

I had co-workers from Dominica. Great people. It's a beautiful and extremely verdant island. Most of the Caribbean is, of course, but Dominica is on steroids. I believe they shot parts of the jungle scenes from the Peter Jackson King Kong there, as well as scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean, part 2.

Notification issued 2/4/14 at 2:15 PM. The New York City Office of Emergency
Management (OEM) has issued a Hazardous Travel Advisory for Wednesday, February
5. The National Weather Service has forecast 2 to 4 inches of snow and
accumulation through Wednesday afternoon; Northern Manhattan and the Bronx will
see accumulations of 4 to 8 inches. Moderate to heavy snow is expected late
Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning before changing to a wintry mix of sleet
and freezing rain during the day. Up to 1/4 inch of ice may accumulate before
the sleet and freezing rain converts to all rain late Wednesday afternoon.
Temperatures will be in the 30s. The plow tracker will be available tomorrow at
6:00 AM at nyc.gov/severeweather. Alternate Side Parking Regulations will also
be suspended citywide on Wednesday, February 5, to facilitate winter weather
preparations and snow removal. Parking meters will remain in effect throughout

The Affordable Care Act will reduce the number of full-time workers by more than 2?million in coming years, congressional budget analysts said Tuesday, a finding that sent the White House scrambling to defend a law that has bedeviled President Obama for years.

After obtaining coverage through the health law, some workers may forgo employment, while others may reduce hours, according to a report by the Congressional Budget Office. Low-wage workers are the most likely to drop out of the workforce as a result of the law, it said. The CBO said the law’s impact on jobs mostly would be felt after 2016.
February 4, 2014 6:26 PM - MontroseMorris
"After obtaining coverage through the health law, some workers MAY forgo employment, while others MAY reduce hours, according to a report by the Congressional Budget Office."

One could also say the opposite with the same degree of confidence and tea-leaf reading ability. I could just as easily say, "I may win Lotto's Mega-Millions." None of that means it will come true, and the statement certainly should not be taken as fact, when it's pure speculation. Let's wait until after 2016, and see what happens in the real world.

February 4, 2014 6:40 PM - Legion
dibs,
The ACA actually deincentivizes many from seeking full time employment because the increase in wages will bump them into a new income category which will exclude them from subsidized health care.

In many cases the differences are very slight from what I've read. A difference in income from 60k to 70k for an individual could trigger huge increases in monthly premiums for example.
Edited at February 4, 2014 6:40 PM
February 4, 2014 6:42 PM - Deleted
I think the part time employees looking for full time work are Prolly making a lot less than 60k
February 4, 2014 6:47 PM - Legion
It cuts across all economic levels dh,
at the lower end of the scale, the part timers who are solely in it for the coverage are now set in their position.
At the higher ranges, the incentive to increase hours decreases as you go up the scale since you simply get pounded by higher mandated monthly healthcare costs.

A mid range income would have to really move up a great deal to make the loss of subsidies worth the effort.
That kind of move usually requires more education and more debt in the first place so it's like a no win situation there.
February 4, 2014 6:49 PM - Deleted
Life isn't a simple equation for most people.

Given the unemployment rates, won't every person who leaves the workforce/cuts hours be replaced by a new job/increased hours for someone else?
Lack of workers is not an issue for most fields, especially the ones where people will choose not to work since they can get subsidized insurance.

gov has some stupid cutoffs when it comes to what income cutoff gets you free medical coverage and what cutoff mandates you pay stiff rate for coverage. Think the NYS cheap medical coverage (ie like healthfirst) has a cutoff of $10k where over 10k translates to a stiff premium for coverage. they need better phasing-in tables for this stuff vs. the stupid all or nothing type approach with these income cutoffs

Good evening.
Lost in Translation was a very good film.
Marie Antoinette was not her best but had its moments, imagery was interesting and a very good soundtrack.

She also directed The Virgin Suicides which is an excellent film that I've written about before here.
Her film stuck very close to the book so that was a big plus but her characters and sound track elevated the whole production. She captured a time, place and mood perfectly.

I believe that's up to the individual to report dibs.
If the income goes down, then it would be reported to the insurance company and
premium/subsidy package altered accordingly.

IRS would be doing the oversight most likely through reported income on W-2s against
some sort of Health care plan issued yearly statement of income/coverage level for the individual.

the girl is dreading all the flowers and fancy dinner too - ie lots of pressure to put out.

I view V-Day as an oppty day. if the relationship is OK, don't over do celebrating V-Day. if it's going great, it's oppty to mark your territory. send a bunch of flowers to her workplace - marking her as your territory and to tell all the potential suiters "too late fuckers. She's taken. Moving on along"

is it your position (nh) that homos are more direct, pete?

etson, that's what you have in mind, renov-wise, with your new pad?

the taxes for the 13.5 million apt are less than mine.
February 4, 2014 9:02 PM - etson
I think it's a bit too understated, but something along the same lines.
Been shopping for animal heads to put on the walls.
February 4, 2014 9:06 PM - etson
$13.5mm place may be a *little* overpriced. It is in one of the new condos overlooking the west side highway parallel with Lincoln Center on the other side of the project.

no rules. This will be 1st year in last few where have spent together. maybe a card but only if I remember to look for 1

February 4, 2014 9:22 PM - More4Less
I'm pretty inconsistent with V-day gift - probably slightly below 50% but wife is worst - think her gift rate is 9%.

February 4, 2014 9:33 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
BnH and I started dating shortly before VDay. Our dates were a week or so before and then a few days after, so we 'missed' it. Which I'm sure was a relief to both of us.
February 4, 2014 9:34 PM - DeLepp
Valentines Day is usually spent with friends, A is not a fan.
February 4, 2014 9:34 PM - etson
I think I have only 'celebrated' Valentine's Day once in my life.
February 4, 2014 9:40 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
BnH and I usually cook a slightly fancier dinner at home. Maybe a card and some nice dessert/chocolate. But that's it. I'm pretty sure we only ever went went out to dinner on Valentine's day once, the year we were in Jamaica. We went to Jake's. That was a very nice evening.

for medicare premiums, the amount is based on income on most recent tax returns. my payments for 2014 are based on 2012 tax returns. my premium is about 20-30% higher than what I was paying on my own, but better coverage.

I'm itching for a renov right now. hoping upstairs neighbor takes my offer to buy her aptmt so I can renov it where I can correct all the mistakes I made in my current aptmt. Key to the errors is I should ignore wife's opinions and it'll be fine.
February 4, 2014 9:48 PM - etson
You mean to move into it or combine with yours?
I know it is done but would imagine converting 2 single-level apartments into a duplex is a total pain in the ass.

We find out tomorrow, maybe*, how much the taxes will be on BnH's imputed income for my health coverage. I have saved a chunk of cash to cover it, but I'm hoping it's less not more than I've squirrelled away.

etson, it's more work to combine the 2 aptmts vertically than horizontally but still not a huge pain. it's more money cause putting in a nice set of stairs is pricey.

no, would move up after renov then sell my current one. financially, it's price to do this as coop will still spank me for the 5% flip tax to sell the current one.
February 4, 2014 10:00 PM - etson

Ouch, 5% flip tax. That is the highest I have heard in a while. In PS I will have to pay 2%, for the new place I don't have to pay & seller pays 1.5%.

Etson, the 5% flip tax is helping keep maintenance at 66c PSF which is ridiculously low. Was paying $1.17 PSF at old coop which also had the 5% flip tax
February 4, 2014 10:13 PM - pepper
Oh, boy, six. What a mess!
February 4, 2014 10:15 PM - etson
$1.80/sf+ at my new place. Recently re-fi'd short term self-amortizing mortgage, but maint is fairly typical for the area. The only decent buildings that are a lot lower fund major capex through assessments. Condo common charges + RE tax in the area is the same as co-op maintenance.

etson, doorman cost a ton. have 24 hr security guards at the door here. just that title difference - doorman vs. security guard is a huge cost savings. a big maintenance crew here too. think besides the flip tax, coop is collecting a ton of commercial rent (coop owns a ton of commercial store fronts and doctor's offices here).
February 4, 2014 10:25 PM - DeLepp
built in 50/60s you will have great closets.

delepp, old coop was built in the 40's and it had ok closets. current coop was a little better with closets but it still took me carving out ~100 sq ft to add in more closets before it felt enough. most peeps, myself include, just find it so easy to have lots of stuff and not being that organized, need all these closets to hide my stuff without pad looking like a hoarder's pad

etson, more closets than I know what to do with - that's what I thought when renov was completed. not thinking that anymore since I moved in. there's still room in the closets but I thought it would have more room left. am trying to clean out some stuff here & there on occasional low-chore weekends.
February 4, 2014 10:40 PM - More4Less
delepp, here's my closet list:
1 walk-in storage
6 double-dr reach-in
1 walk-in closet
1 tiny utility closet
2 small storage cabs in the bathrooms

I basically have as much as a suburban house yet, it still feels like I could use another double-dr reach-in closet

Oh, benson, that's super cool! But see six's link above - apparently the hotel situation is not so good. Very, poor, in fact.
February 4, 2014 11:09 PM - sixyearsandcounting
I will say one thing about that link I posted - the journalist complaining about the trash bin for toilet paper hasn't traveled much. That's a fairly common arrangement in many parts of the world, where you don't put toilet paper in the toilet [one wonders about the accumulation of poo mist though...].
February 4, 2014 11:09 PM - ilovestoops
pete: sorry, I forgot how it works - high premium is for B & medigap. sold farm in 2012 so high income that year. will be low from now on. medicare advantage is a terrible idea - many docs don't take it & if you have a plan with scripts instead of part D medicare, they change the formulary and eliminate meds you need if they're expensive. i think part d is required to have 2 meds in each category, or something like that, so you're not ever screwed as by the private companies that offer med advantage plans.
February 4, 2014 11:12 PM - ilovestoops
