Definition of 'Super Bowl Indicator'

An indicator based on the belief that a Super Bowl win for a team from the old AFL (AFC division) foretells a decline in the stock market for the coming year, and a win for a team from the old NFL (NFC division) means the stock market will be up for the year.

Though historically speaking the Super Bowl indicator boasts an 80% accuracy rate, remember the old maxim: correlation does not imply causation. In 2008, despite the New York Giants (NFC division) winning the Super Bowl (indicating a Bull Market), the stock market suffered one of the largest downturns since the Great Depression. Though the indicator is an interesting take on predicting the stock market, by no means should the correlation dictate an individual's portfolio construction.

The theory has been correct in 37 of the last 47 years, says Howard Silverblatt of S&P Capital IQ.

Of course it was a gross oversimplification, that's what we do here.
I disagree with almost everything the guy says about gentrification including the problems, causes, and solutions.

Having seen how city defined neighborhood boundaries worked in Los Angeles, I think that they are a horrible idea and only lead to more bad feelings, wasted time, and misguided priorities.

I think his recent ideas are pretty poor also and will do the opposite of what he wants for all but the luck few who win the "affordable housing lottery"

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/greenwichtime/obituary.aspx?n=Leonard-Smith&pid=169274773

"Leonard Mason Smith, 86, a veteran of World War II and Korea and longtime resident of Pine Island, Florida passed away on November 27th, 2013.
Leonard Smith was a very private man. If you wanted to know his cause of death, he would have told you that it was none of your business. If you asked Penny, his beloved wife, she would tell you that he had cancer, but not to tell anyone. Although his prognosis was dire, he battled on, lived his life and survived several years beyond the experts' expectations. He did not want his obituary to suggest that he lost a long battle with cancer. By his reckoning, cancer could not win, and could only hope for a draw. And so it was. Leonard Smith hated losing...

Leonard Smith hated pointless bureaucracy, thoughtless inefficiency and bad ideas born of good intentions. He loved his wife, admired and respected his children and liked just about every dog he ever met. He will be greatly missed by those he loved and those who loved him. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you cancel your subscription to The New York Times."

I haven't kept up with everything he's said, especially since I don't live there anymore, and he did not represent me when I did, so I'm not going to get into a pointless war over the specifics of his policies. I do think, however, that he is doing his best to try to represent people who feel marginalized in this fast moving real estate world we live in. Of course neighborhoods are always in a state of change, but they have never changed as fast as they are changing now. It's like being a peaceful fisherman minding your own business on an island when the tsunami comes. One minute you have a home, next minute you're being swept away, totally powerless. I think he's doing the best he can, under the circumstances, for people in his district. It's a hard juggling act, as he represents both the villagers and the wave.

#52
February 3, 2014 10:41 AM - BoerumHillScott
There is certainly a huge amount of change going in in the neighborhoods he represents, which is why I dislike what he is saying. Instead of addressing the causes of the problems impacting his constituents, he is chasing boogeymen and offering ineffective or impossible solutions.
Using the tsunami example, he is blaming the waves and destruction on the resort that just opened down the beach. Is the resort causing changes in the town? Sure, and probably good and bad. Is it causing the tsunami? No.

I think leadership is doing what is right and will make a positive difference, not tilting and windmills and telling people what they want to hear.

One more thing about Jefferies. He is a U.S. Representative now, and I think should be focused on things beyond local real estate. The stuff in his recent speech is almost all covered by state and local laws. If he cared that much about it, he should have stayed at that level of government.

Speaking of trains, this was the first time I used the Dubai Metro to get around (I had used it once before, but just for the experience). Very efficient and convenient. Totally automated trains arrive every four or five minutes, the stations are super-clean and many have bathrooms, and prices are good. There's a "family" car (ie women and children only) and a "gold-class" car, if that's your thing. I think it's still the only functioning rail line in the Arabian Peninsula.

I will admit to not following Jefferies too closely, but on his home page, 3 of the 5 stories are for local/state items, 1 is for the speech that led to this discussion, and 1 is about legislation he is sponsoring in Congress.

Of his top 10 press releases, 6 are on local/state issues, 3 are on national/congressional issues, and 1 is on an international issue.

I have no idea how this compares to others in Congress, but to me it seems like his priorities are in the wrong place and he has not moved on from his state role yet.

Speaking in general of any elected official, would it not be prudent to represent one's local district, even at a higher office holding level? I don't see how that's a negative. I think it's better, generally speaking, than someone who gets elected by their constituents, and then ignores them for "higher" ideals.

I had the morning commute from hell, not due to the snow. When I arrived at 4th Ave F/G station, it was packed to the gills. No train came for 15 minutes, and no announcements. Then G trains start bypassing the station via the express track. The first F train comes, and the conductor tells everyone that there was a signal problem at Ditmas Ave backing up the system. More F trains come, and more G trains bypass. I check on the MTA's website, and they say that the G train service is "good". Useless.

I decide to take the F to 42nd Street and catch the 7 train there. F train still running slow, but when it gets to East Broadway it stops. The conductor tells us that there is a fire at the Delancey Street. station, and the service is terminated. He advises us to wait at the platform for a F train going back to Jay Street Brooklyn so as to catch the A train to Manhattan. When I get off on the platform I see smoke billowing out of the tunnel and rapidly filling up the station, yet the conductor was still advising people to wait on the platform, there are trains running in the other direction. Completely inept directions, given the smoke situation. I advised everyone to get out of the station asap, and then walked through the LES to catch the D at Grand Street.

Total commute time: 2.5 hours.

4 of the 5 zip codes I have lived are split between 2 congressional districts.
4 of the 5 have been obviously gerrymandered (the other somewhat).
3 of the 5 are split between a White Republican and a Black Democrat (all in the South).

Late to the ball: Esquire author knows nothing about addiction, or ignores it all. I see lots of famous people at meetings. I probably see a lot more than I realize, particularly musicians, writers, artists, anyone of renown who I wouldn't see on TV or film. I always feel they have it a bit tougher due to the extra difficulty they face in attempting to retain anonymity. Anonymity critical to recovery, the purpose of which is not merely to avoid stigma, but to provide a sympathetic stranger to unburden oneself to. It can be much easier to talk to a stranger about past activities that one may attach a lot of shame and guilt to.

Hmmm. I seem to be ending sentences with prepositions. My skills must be eroding. THANKS OBAMA, THANKS DEBLASIO!

Not really, M4L. Remember I'm shopping for brand new products. Some of which are still prototypes. Manufactures will discount old, overstocked, 'dead' merchandise, but never new. What is common at shows is a 'Show Special'. Order $X and receive free shipping or order $X and receive 50% off list instead of normal 48%. Many companies waive their minimum opening order at the shows.

No special discounts for low attendance (Superbowl and weather). Some of them are really hurting, others are having a great show.

But M4L, I don't believe them. I think 75% off gets them to their true retail (edited). They are just marking up 3 or 4 times what they need just to come down to sell price while acting like they are giving it away when they are still making plenty.

That pic of battery park city is so beautiful! I love seeing Central Park in the snow with those beautiful lights they have.

So this guy with the LIFE advice poster and greeting cards is part of a team. Six or eight, young creative people sitting around on Macs being all new agey Brooklyn hipstery.

He sent me an email just now with my invoice and shipping info. Said that they cook lunch every Thursdays and serve at 1 o'clock. I really should come by. I am welcome to invite others. I should give him a heads up if I bring more that 2 people to assure that they have enough.

They are trying to change the world, these kids. They might just.

Very late to the party. Weekend work drifted into weekday and evening.

Thanks for all the great snow pics. Would have enjoyed it more, but the trudging, and slip-slidey hiking wasn't much fun. The good news is that I chose to wear my good warm snow boots, so tootsies were cozy all day.

Me too, haven't been to dim sum on a regular basis since The Nice Restaurant closed. Looks like it's time to start up again :-)
