I think the GDP number is not high on the list of concerns here. This is a very "risk off" correction. People are scared that the emerging merkets cannot properly deal with the end of QE by the Fed and they are right to be concerned. The dollar has become very strong and their currencies are weakening. In addition, the US current account deficit is shrinking a lot because of the dollar strength and the US is far more competitive than it was years ago.

On the flip side, the declining price of gasoline, in and of itself, will add to GDP growth in the next few quarters. We could actually be seeing very strong GDP numbers in 3Q & 4Q but right now, the market is spooked by VERY short term volatility.

This is NOT a time to try and time anything. Stay invested. Options strategies are good to pursue here to limit losses but that's beyond the scope of an OT discussion. I typically never bother with them.

Chili was great. Very standard…ground beef, onions, crushed tomatoes, kidney beans, chili spice packs and extra salsa picante (We have the Goya brand here). Have enough leftovers for 3 more meals.

WF's artisan italian bread was OK, not spectacular. Their ciabatta is much better.

Part, rephrase your question. Did you mean what caused it to go up over the past few years????

That would be quantitative easing…the Fed injecting huge amounts of money, most of which went into the stock market and drove psychology that they wouldn't let rates rise nor allow the market to fall. That's ending.

Yes, that's what I asking. Why were things rosy a couple of weeks ago (certainty) and now scary uncertainty)?
#31
January 31, 2014 9:16 AM - dibs
The end of easing started. What you may have heard referred to as "the taper." That, and a few other exogenous events like Turkey, pushed the emerging market currencies and it sort of dominoed, as it always does. More uncertainty, more negative psychology, more volatility…the cocktail of the three worst things for the stock market.

Fear is a much more powerful driver than greed.

I considered insisting that I go for him and buy the stuff on his list, or that he wear the long pants I bought him at his request a couple of years ago, but I finally decided that it wouldn't kill him to go from the house to the car to the store to the car to the house in his shorts. But it was COLD last week when we went shopping. Relatively tropical today when we go again.

I can vouch for Mucinex (or the generic versions in any chain drug store). It really helps get rid of the congestion that stuffs up your head. The last time I bought it, I saw a zillion different versions in all kinds of combinations but what makes it work is large doses of Guaifenesin. You do need to drink a lot of water with it.

Last year, right before Christmas, I was volunteered to work with a bunch of kids in our nearby community center. We were making Christmas decorations to put on the center's Christmas tree. I had kids all over the place, some of whom had runny noses, sneezing and coughs. On me, of course. Two weeks later I came down with the plague. I had the worst sinus cold and infection I've ever had in my life. It lasted an entire month and was just awful. I haven't been that sick in years. Lesson learned. Stay away from children.

Partridge, I think today and Saturday will be terrible. Not sure about game day. I drove to W 32 St. between 6th and 7th Aves. twice on Wednesday and it took a full hour from my house in the middle of the day, and another hour from JFK at 3:30. Part of the problem was that since W32 St. goes east and starts on 7th Ave. (interrupted by Penn Station), I have to enter 7th Ave. from north of 34th St. Awful, awful, awful with Broadway closed to traffic.

During the week it was enhanced by the fact that lots of side streets in midtown had all kinds of set-up trucks and trailers and many trucks were circling, trying to make pickups and delivery in their normal course of business. "A sobering new study published by the Journal of Wine Economics — yes, there is a Journal of Wine Economics — finds that alcohol consumption in American states rises as the population’s politics becomes more liberal.

The study by Pavel Yakovlev and Walter P. Guessford of Duquesne University in Pennsylvania shows a direct correlation between political beliefs and the demand for alcohol. The study compares sales of alcoholic beverages against the political leanings of a state's members of Congress, as ranked by liberal organizations Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) and the AFL-CIO Committee on Political Education (COPE).

The research reveals that states with more liberal representatives like Nevada tend to consume up to three times more alcohol per head than more politically conservative states like Arkansas and Utah.

The study concludes:

In this study, we show that liberal ideology has a statistically significant positive association with the consumption of alcohol in the United States even after controlling for economic, demographic, and geographic differences across states."

not just strippers.....check this quote out. What does it say about football fans?
“Any sports venue and especially the Super Bowl acts as a sex trafficking magnet,” said Representative Chris Smith, a New Jersey Republican, at a Jan. 27 House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on trafficking and sports events. “Along with welcoming enthusiastic fans, the state also is preparing for the likely influx of both domestic and international traffickers.”

Keystone pipeline good idea. I'm guessing a lot of the people who object on environmental grounds don't realize the recent explosive growth of train traffic carrying our newly domestically produced nat gas and crude oil surpluses from shale. Statistically, the train accidents are doing much more ecological damage than a decent pipeline would.

"when the price is right."

S'what I mean, when the price of crude and nat gas stays high enough to make it profitable to extract the stuff, vs the costs of safely getting the stuff and the cost of cleaning and the cost of penalties.

As some sectors have shown, sometimes the profit is so high, and the penalties so low, shenanigans begin to occur...

Pipelines are the most environmentally safe way to move liquids and gases (as well as most cost effective over the long run and/or for large quantities).

The campaign against the pipeline was attempt to make moving shale oil more expensive so it would not be produced.
In reality, it would still get produced and moved to other markets, either via pipeline or rail, with reduced profit.

As I have said before, I believe the "environmental" movement, as it is currently constituted, is losing the high ground. I believe that their "all in" bet on global warming (or whatever it is called these days) and their obstructionist attitude on matters such as the Keystone pipeline and fracking will cost them dearly. There are huge parts of our population that need a decent job, and they will grow increasingly tired of the chicken little arguments.

That is not to say that there is not a legitimate interest with respect to the environment. It is, however, one of a number of interests. Hopefully, a more level-headed advocacy will take its place.

Admittedly, Otis was a bit of a Hail Mary, but I couldn't think of any demo that would start with cutting a rope, and involve safety. Thanks to Peter Cooper, I knew elevators were being figured out around that time. Peter kind of messed up a bit: he left a round shaft for an elevator in the Cooper Union Foundation Bldg, not realizing they would wind up being square. On the other hand, we have a relatively rare cylindrical elevator...

I found out some bad news today - I probably have diabetes. It runs in my family - my father has it, my brother has it and my grandmother had it. My (gorgeous) legs have been weak lately and I've had them checked out. Given my family history, my doctor had my blood sugar checked out, and it is high. Bummer. My wife wonders why I'm not freaking out, but it's just part of life. My dad's diabetes manifested itself at the same exact age as I am currently - 56 - and he is still going strong, just shy of 90 years old.
January 31, 2014 8:23 PM - pepper

I've got to talk to my doctor and see if it's full-blown diabetes. I'm usually pretty strict with my diet, but the past year or so I've let myself go, due to a combination fo stress and the fact that there are always goodies where I work. I'm hoping that if I resume a more strict diet, I can avoid all the complex stuff. My legs already feel better since I cut way back the past 2-3 weeks.

January 31, 2014 8:36 PM - rf
Benson, I know several people who were able to forestall diabetes with diet and exercise. It's great that your dad is doing well as a diabetic at almost 90 years old!

My dad will be 91 in March. He was an airplane mechanic for 47 years from the week of his graduation from Aviation High School until Pan Am went under. He was on the line crew (the guy with the flashlights guiding the plane in, then talked to the pilot about what the plane needed, then did routine maintenance including stuff like changing engines, to turn the plane around). For most of those years, he also drove a newspaper truck. He worked for a wholesaler and he bundled his papers and loaded and unloaded his own truck without a helper. Both jobs were outdoors and very physically demanding. Until 2 or 3 years ago, he routinely walked a couple of miles every week just for the exercise. He always pushed himself very hard. And I think he looks pretty good for an old guy!

He's been wearing the compression stockings for about a year. His legs were swelling up and subject to infection that put him in the hospital a couple of times. He was finally diagnosed with venous insufficiency. The stockings fixed the condition almost immediately!

January 31, 2014 8:37 PM - dibs
Well, I need to cut back too as my triglycerides are high. I stopped drinking any sodas years ago but I snack too often on sweets, cookies and ice cream. But the bigger issue is the wine consumption. I can't remember what my levels were last time, but they were above normal. I'll check next week.

Benson,
Type I is the bad one, due to a lack of insulin producing cells in the pancreas (islets of langerhans).
That's the one that can lead to retinopathy, neuropathy and renal failure. Onset is early in life. Insulin required.
Type II is the milder form and usually from insulin resistence or decreased production of insulin but not an absolute lack of it. Usually controlled with diet and pills.

Type I diabetics should carry around some kind of sweet at all times.

A good doctor visit, with positive reports, has me riding high. A cough, clearing of the throat, terrifies me. My objectivity is down around nil, I've called in the experts. We're nearly drowning in expertise. And yet, I don't sleep. I fixate on little things wondering if I'm missing something larger. Focus on the big picture for awhile. Then refocusing on the minutae again. And back and forth I go.

cobble, have a glass of wine.
January 31, 2014 11:24 PM - Partridge
Yes, have two glasses.

I know the fear, but you must try to consider how your stress and sleepless nights will benefit them. It won't. You must care for yourself if you are going to do your best for them.

legion: he carries sugar pills. the problem is when his blood sugar starts getting too low he can very suddenly become irrational - totally denies there is a problem. it's the most bizarre experience to try to convince him that he needs sugar. he says that long term it's better not to let blood sugar get too high - I tell him he's not taking into consideration the short term risks of hurting himself when he passes out, or getting mugged, etc.

cobble - I can't imagine how stressful it is dealing with your friends. lp's right - take car of yourself!

rf: your dad looks really good!

Yes, I know you know. I'm trying. I do my best to block it out while I'm at work. Focus on what's in front of me. But in my off hours, and especially late at night, my mind works overtime. Making lists of things to buy, calls to make, experts to speak to. Afraid of missing something, I don't know what.

One of my friends took my hand this evening, and spoke to me through the background din of the shift change. It was heartfelt and sincere, saying he's happy and feels lucky to have all these good people around him, but he's not liking this being old, and he's uncomfortable in being the way he is at this advanced age. It felt like a warning to me. Like he was telling me that he's letting go. Little by little. He's leaving us. And I'm not ready to lose him. I cried on my walk home. I'm crying now.

My laundry is out of the dryer. Off to get a good night's sleep before SuperBowlmageddon. Good night, all!

stoops, I'm kinda stunned that you would throw such a DIRTY party. Fruit boobies and butt plugs?

Oh dear, sweet Cobble. It takes more strength than any of us have to cope with that. Deep breaths.

I'm sorry, thank you for responding. I'm just having 'a moment', and thinking/feeling out loud, after a long week. I'll be ok. I'll go have a little shot of cognac and try to remember to breath for a bit.

this is driving me crazy and I think there's a simple solution. on the right side of the browser is a scroll bar. there's usually an up arrow at the top and a down arrow at the bottom that can be clicked on to move the screen up or down a little. those little arrows are missing. I've got the bar (don't know what it's called) on the scroll bar that I can move to move the screen, but not the arrows. where are they and how do I get them back?
