LOL…from the Philly crime reports…

On Saturday, 01/04/14, 2:10 AM, complainant returned home to an apartment in the 1300 block Locust St. and woke up 10 AM to find things moved around and a I-Pad in a back pack missing. Security video showed that a male entered the building with the complainant who was intox. and left a short time later carrying a back pack.

Are you heating your french press water hot enough? Should be just below boiling.

"Water temperature is vital. Doing it correctly, you can make what many say is the perfect cup of coffee. Ideally, you want the temperature between 195 and 200 degrees F. One way to do this is to boil the water and use an “instant read” thermometer from any kitchen store. Once you remove the water from the heat, see how long it takes to reach 200 degrees. It will probably be just 10 or 15 seconds. In some places, your water may boil at the proper temperature (higher elevations). Do not allow the water to boil more than a couple of seconds. Once you know the timing, you are all set for the future."

I watched the "Good Wife" which was great, as usual. The backbiting, dirty tricks and personal sabotage are coming to a head, so I'm sure there will be some nail biting episode exploding it all soon. Unfortunately, it comes on at the same time as Downton Abbey, so will have to wait until next Sunday to catch up, a week behind, on the goings on of the Granthams. They don't repeat it on our PBS station until 5am on Thursday morning, and I'm not planning to be awake at that time. They do rerun it before showing the new episode on Sunday nite.

dh, i think you said you grind your own (nh). You may not be grinding it fine enough. The problem is that french press usually recomends a grind between perc and drip and not a fine grind cuz the press filter isn't able to filter it all

With French press the beans spend longer time in water so it makes sense there's be more caffeine. What's even more potent is good cold brew where they soak the grounds for 24 hours. Fucking rocket fuel. I'm gonna miss that.

DIBS and DH;

I have one of those Nespresso Pixie machines at home. They run about $200. They make a GREAT cup of espresso - complete with a good amount of crema.

You have to buy their pods. If you buy them on-line, they go for about $0.70 each.

If you like a daily espresso, as we do, it's worth it.

DIBS and all;

Have you see that e-mail that is circulating around the internet which notes that the space of time it took to create the Obamacare website - 3.5 years - corresponds to the same amount of time between Pearl Harbor and the defeat of the Nazis. With regard to the latter, the US mobilized 16 million men for service, built something like 22 battleships and countless other armaments, started-up and executed the development of the A-bomb, and fought a massive war across 2 oceans.

I once told this to Slopey: liberals, in their thirst for a federal government that is all things to all people, in fact debilitate it. When you have a government that is focused on the few necessary things, it can accomplish great things.

Now that the vitriol is out of the way, let me address the points Scott made:

-I am not aware of any large-scale (on the order of, say, Amazon) websites that have had such a troubled public launch. I am sure that it has happened, but it is not the norm. Moreover, when one is designing a website through which 1/6th of the economy will be directed, you would think that extra attention would be paid.

-your point about the Manhattan project actually reinforces my argument. The government had to launch a massive, intensive program to develop the A-bomb, to catch up with the Nazis. It had the reserve capacity to launch such a program. The bombs worked, and they spared many an American life, and shortened the war in the Pacific.

Today, the federal government has no such reserve capacity, as it is overcommitted and broke.

Sorry benson, i was really just taken aback by the stupidity of the comparison. I do agree with you that we used to be able to get shit done, be it ww2 or sending man to moon or building the empire state or interstate highway system. It is a shame we are mired in partisan muck and it holds back progress. That said, your blaming liberals is part of the problem not the solution.
January 13, 2014 11:29 AM - Deleted
"a website through which 1/6th of the economy will be directed"

Not true. The entire health care system might be 1/6th of economy, but those that are using the web site are a small fraction of the total population. Most people are not in the individual market.

Had to have my blood tested as a follow up to my prescription drug allergic reaction. My doctor's office used to draw blood at his Bay Ridge location. I've switched to his Park Slope office. No phlebotomy services. And, as you know, I have new medical insurance. No card yet, but I obtained my number over the phone and was told I could give it out for care.

So, knowing what Benson had said, that my low cost Obamacare insurance would subject me to the horrors of using low-end, medicaid accepting providers where I would wait for hours in a cooty-infested shithole, I ventured out into the wilds to have my blood drawn.

Armed with my script and a list of locations where I could have it done, at 8 am, I made my way to the closest location. (You are thinking 2 trains and a bus to Brownsville, right?) Nope. I selected the closer of the two Brooklyn Heights offices. Atlantic Ave and Clinton St. Quest Diagnostics. (DGX for the stock obsessed.)

In and out in 20 minutes. Cathy is a VERY good with a needle. Clean, professional, no co-pay, no junkies, pregnant teens and no cooties!

I am not aware of one serious proposal by the Democrats in recent years to reform the entitlement programs. I also know that anytime the Republicans have floated a proposal like the Ryan plan, the Democrats do not see it as a starting basis for negotiation. Rather, they whip out fear-mongering campaigns that show grandma being thrown off the cliff. Hence, my comment, and I stick by it.

The reason that large scale screw-ups don’t often make it into public view often is because companies will delay or scale back roll-outs when stuff is not going well.
In addition, smart companies do things like limited releases, closed betas, and invite based registration to keep initial users of a system small.
With a deadline mandated by law, none of these were feasible given the state of the project as the deadline approached.

I am not saying that the rollout was in any way good, that the Obama admin handled it well, or that it should be considered remotely successful. I am just saying that from a systems development perspective, it was a disaster of similar scale that private companies create/face on a regular basis.

Private companies have the advantage that they can sweep it under the rug, and are not forced to go live with a system they know is not ready.

Most doctors in NY accept Oxford (Liberty plan) and BC/BS's "Empire Blue" plan. These are the two plans I've had in recent years, and I never had an issue with a doctor accepting these plans.

I have Cigna, and my experiences have not been nearly so good in terms of percentage of doctors covered.
Luckily, similar to Partridge’s experience, I have not had issues finding decent doctors close by.
The big exception is when my son needed some advanced care, and we ended up having to go to White Plains to get it.

The plans I had in Houston and Los Angeles were also pretty limited in terms of doctors and hospitals.

Serving size 5 pieces. 250 calories, 25 serving in box = 6250 calories!

Obvious re-gift. So, questions for you all. What to do with them? Anyone want them? Do I thank them or send them a nasty note about being pre-diabetic and ask them if they are trying to kill me?

Randi, I agree--tattoos have no appeal to me. But I am so beyond un-hip that it doesn't really matter. We have talked and talked and talked about the permanence of tattoos. I let her do whatever she wants with her hair (fire-engine red at her bat mitzvah--I almost had a heart attack when they rinsed it off!) but hair grows back. I think she may change her mind or just let it go for a while, but I think a small, innocuous, inconspicuous tattoo may be inevitable.

Pete, I hope you are kidding. When I was in high school (mid-60s), parents threw their kids out of the house because they wouldn't get hair cuts. No arbitrary decisions about this stuff for me.

I told her that I appreciate her talking to me about it but she shouldn't expect me to say it's a good idea. So be it. She's a good girl, a sensible girl, but she has to make her own mistakes. Better this than drugs!

m4l, I haven't been in a Target in well over a year but last week I had two phishing charges to my card…both only $5.00. They do that to see if you aren't paying attention and then they go for more. My Barclay MC for USAirways caught it and emailed me, cancelled the charges and the card and overnighted me a new card.

I just signed up for it.

Everyone needs to check their statement online.

I sometimes wonder if Partridge and I are living in the same planet wrt Obamacare.

I came home tonight to find my daughter quite upset, and it seems that all my research was in vain. You remember I searched and searched for a policy that included her key doctor -her neurologist - in their network, as well as her regimen of a drug that prevents MS flare-ups.

Her report tongiht:

-they had listed her neurologist in their network, but that is a bit of a spin. Turns out that private in-office visits are NOT covered for this doctor. Rather, they cover a medicaid clinic in which she serves some hours. Moreover, it is a walk-in clinic, and she cannot reserve an appointment with her. Yet, they listed this doctor as in their "network"

-there is some complication with her getting her regimen. My daughter tried to explain it to me, but I still can't understand it.

I'm screwed. There's just no way around it. I'll have to get a non-exchange policy and spend $900/month or so to ensure she gets the proper care. If that statement is partisan to some, then I'll gladly accept contributions towards the bill, and keep my mouth shut.

But you told me to speak with my doctor's office directly and verify his/her acceptance and not to rely on the info on the site or with the insurance company.

Your daughter's health and her ability to see the professionals that know her well is paramount. Her circumstance is very different to mine. I'm sorry for you and her that this has not gone well.

any MD's relationship/participation with any health insurance plan can change at any time. It is always confusing to figure out what/who is covered. I know enough examples where someone has gone for procedure covered/MD covered then they find out that the anestheseoligist MD works with isn't covered. I have friend trying to get answers about
medicare supplement plan who can not get definitive answers. So your complaints I don't find partisan. But blaming everything on Obamacare rather than the bureaucracy of insurance companies I do find partisan.

My doctor explained to me that all of the insurance companies are paying him the same amount. Medicaid the same. It makes no difference to him. He wishes to continue to do as he has always done. To care for his patients, to counsel and heal them when possible. He wishes to work at a pace which is manageable for him and which allows him to spend the time necessary with the individual patient. He does not seek riches. His highest earning days are behind him. He is Indian born. Very philosophical about life. Follows both western and eastern practices. Yoga, meditation and racquetball. He is Catholic.

I have found that many successful and motivated doctors in the top of their field, do not accept any insurance as they want top dollar for their services. Their window of top earnings potential is probably pretty small and they choose this path.

I had salad for lunch, lasagna for dinner. Foregoing brownie in the interest of wine.

Dramatic difference in Methodist ER, vs. Lenox Hill. However, once I arrived on the scene, and started marching around talking to doc and nurses, things fell into place rather quickly. It was fascinating to watch how responsive doc and others were to me, while my poor friend, there with aide until I arrived, had lain there for 2 hours without even seeing one doctor. G*d help all of us. And make sure you have a health proxy, please, and that they will show up and will be proactive on your behalf!

My doc is much the same, LP, he is from India. He refuses to play the game. He sees only as many as he can without more than 20 minute wait, and rarely that. He made his money-that is to say 'enough'. He is close to retirement. I've been seeing him since I was 15 and diagnosed with pneumonia. He's always there to answer a call off-hours/weekends, and sometimes gives me med samples. I'll lose him one day, and feel some fear about ever finding anyone like him again. And we share political beliefs. And when my father was ill, and in his hospital, he would check on him, and take time to stop and speak with me about him.

In good news: I am reuniting with my cousin tomorrow. We were like brothers growing up. We were born one day apart, and lived one block away. I grew up on West 3rd Street, he grew up on West 4th Street, next to my grandmother, next to my friend that I still see (the guy whose wife died last year). That is how close-knit our world was, and we were inseparable.

Later on, we drifted apart, partly because he was the "malcontent gay" type, if you know what I mean. Always had a chip on his shoulder, always had a negative remark to make. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

"But blaming everything on Obamacare rather than the bureaucracy of insurance companies I do find partisan"

Pete;

I have no love for insurance companies. I know what they are about. But here's the deal, as far as I see: my daughter had a perfectly great policy prior to Obamacare: Healthy NY. What was great about the insurance was this: she got a subsidy due to her disability, and it was about the same as she will get from Obmacare. In turn, there was sacrifice on her part: it was stripped down insurance, but it covered the important parts for her, and she had access to her doctors. Who the hell was the federal government to come in and decree that this insurance was "substandard" and therefore had to be cancelled?? And yes, that I blame on Obamacare.
January 13, 2014 10:49 PM - petebklyn
