Holy fucking cold weather.

Sorry I missed the discussions last night.
We were busy getting and putting together our new sofa, and trying not to kill people in a big ass ZipCar cargo van.
Then we made use of the new sofa while feeding our recent "Damages" addiction.

Now in the National Archives in Maryland. That was the coldest commute of my life, wind chill factor was -8 degrees. Sartorial options for layering were limited. I chose the preppy blazer and vintage hipster flannel - of course I had my big winter coat on so nobody had to look at that combo.

OK, so here’s my much promised review of investment performance in 2013. First, an overview. Equity markets were up between 20% and 30%+ for US equity indices. Foreign markets had more mixed results. However, bond markets were down as interest rates rose. The benchmark 10 Year Treasury rate doubled from 1.6% to about 3%, the basis for weak bond prices. Thus, bond markets were off between 5% and 30%, the worst being such classes as munis and mortgage backed securities.

So, with that in mind, my retirement account was +12.6%, certainly underperforming the overall markets this year. Bear in mind that it is structured to produce income through dividends and interest. It’s made up of 64 commons stocks and REITs of which 12 are foreign stocks (mostly Asian REITs and infrastructure plays that pay out high dividends) and 14 ETFs and Closed End Funds. At the beginning of the year, yields on my holdings ranged from about 2% to 19%. In 2012, the fund was up 20.4%.

The fund produced income of a 7.9% yield based on the beginning of year value.

However, the important aspect to focus on is that income from dividends and interest grew 23% in 2012 over 2011 and 36% in 2013 over 2012, to a point where it is now generating more than enough cash flow in the form of dividends and interest than I need to live on for a year.

I post this to illustrate that, with proper planning and advice, you can make investing work for you without taking huge risks or speculating on stocks. AND, DIVERSIFICATION IS KEY.

The S&P 500 10 year average annual dividend growth is 7%, which is now higher than 10 year average price appreciation for the market. Dividends grew about 15% in 2013 and are expected to grow about the same amount in 2014.

Not at all, Pete. With trading commissions as low as they are, you could put small amounts of money in many stocks. Even with just $5,000-10,000 you can be diversified in individual stocks, not to mention mutual funds and ETFs which, by definition are diversified.

Like I posted the other day, randi, a portfolio of high dividend paying stocks, grows well in excess of the S& P 500. I used the SYY example and this chart of SYY with dividends reinvested vs. S&P 500 with dividends invested…..

There are many S&P 500 stocks that willdeliver strong dividend growth, PERFORMING BETTER THAN THAT OF THE AVERAGE GROWTH STOCK. You don't have to actually seek "growth stocks" to beat the market.

PERFECT FOR SOMEONE YOUNGER OVER MANY YEARS.

randi, the problem with recommending growth stocks to younger investors is that they require intensive research and following and you have to anticipate when the growth will slow. The market will most likely figure it out before you or I do and you'll lose money. Growth stocks are also known as momentum stocks for a reason but when it stops, they take a massive dirt nap.

Of course a few growth mutual funds are always a good idea. Find the ones with the longest record of good results. Be prepared for volatility.

They will pay an additional $543 Million to the Madoff trustee who, before that amount, has recovered 50 cents on the dollar for Madoff clients, a very large % for this sort of thing

"Even with just $5,000-10,000" - yeah, I wish I had "just" $5K to $10K lying around. Dave, the reality is that most people don't. That's why we can't get into the stock market, and plan cushy retirements before we check into nursing homes. I love those commercials where the retired couple is out whale watching on their boat. Most people won't ever be able to retire.

The middle, lower middle, and even good chunks of the lower class can still afford to buy a house in many parts of the country.

I have a 19 year old cousin who works retail and various side jobs with a husband with similar low paying jobs who just bought a house, with close to no savings or help from family (who are also poor).

The price for any individual house in most country over the long term has not even kept up with inflation.
The two key reasons why average housing prices have gone up over time is
1) the impact of higher priced urban areas
2) the fact the average house is getting bigger and nicer

I opened a mutual fund investment account right before I entered college, with money from a summer job.
I started it off with $250 or so, and had a $25 or $50 automatic investment put in it through college.
That would never be enough to retire on, but certainly helped me out when I graduated college and was getting started.

Excluding the top 10% of wealthy Americans and excluding the bottom 20% of unemployed and underemployed Americans, the remaining majority of 70% could invest in some way proportionate to their expendable incomes, but don't. IMO, Americans have very unrealistic, and often frivolous, set of priorities as to what to do with any extra cash.

I know way too many people that make a decent income but still live paycheck to paycheck and are left in a tailspin when (not if) emergencies hit them. But they continue to have their cable TV, iPhones, Macbooks, take vacations and eat out several times a week. We have all seen them on TV at the Walmart or Costco fighting over the flatscreens at Christmas. Madison Avenue marketing and social pressures have clouded their reasoning. They are fools who refuse to swallow the bitter pill and take personal responsibility. Rather than government handouts, this group cycle through hand out from friends and families when times get rough.

Dave's personal investing info is not showy in my opinion. He sets a unique example for others to learn from and take what they can apply to their situations. Must his be a 'rags to riches' story to appreciate what he has to say?

True, a great deal of people have 401K's. I used to have one myself. But most people don't even look at the statements any further than to see if they've made or lost money. I think the basics of stocks, mutual funds and other every day financing should be a part of high school curriculum. That would help take the elitism out of stocks and bonds and trading. As it is, a great majority of people in this country still think the stock market is "not for them." That is unfortunate.

Part of that feeling is from the stock market itself, which cloaks itself in money and mystery and elitism. It's certainly gotten better over the last 30 years, especially with do it yourself electronic trading, but most people still have no clue what the market does, or how it works. And the relatively high cost of starting out is partially to blame. A couple of hundred dollars may not be much to a New Yorker who spends that kind of money on dinner for two, but it's a lot of money for a great deal of people, in and out of the city.

Your 11:19 hits a lot of valid points, MM. When people have some investments, they really need to take the initiative to educate themselves when they know they are not.

Advice is avilable in all forms and the worst advice can be that coming from friends. I suspect that's the sort of advice that most of Madoff's investors had.

In this day and age, you can walk into a Schwad or any other office, sit down and start to get a lot of good advice for free. If it takes $1,000 to open an account, you put away $100 at a time (or $25) until you can do so. Like I said, everbody started somewhere, and still can.

One of the thoughts I've had recently is how our educational system has abandoned "practicality" in favor of pure academics. My wife and I know a number of people who are well-educated but have not a lick of practical common sense. Case in point: one of my wife's friends is a widow about 60, who never had children. She lived in a two family house which her parents owned (and they lived in the other apartment). Last year her parents passed away, and the house is now hers. At the same time, she is broke, despite having been a teacher for 30 years. Every time I see her I ask if she has rented out the other apartment yet. Nope, she hasn't gotten around to emptying it out, and doesn't even know how to arrange a clean out.

The starting point would be restructuring the entitlements but, for the Democrats, those are untouchable because that's where they get their votes from. We'll pay a very high price in later years if these are not restructured.

Oh wait, "we" won't but the likes of "you" wil!!!!!

I've always said, offer early retirement to 20% of the government workforce and I bet you'd get a very high % of takers. Retirement benefits are much cheaper than employing them and a lot of $$$$ will be saved. I've seen the math.

Money can be found when Congress wants to find it. It's amazing how Republicans cry about not having enough money to pay for unemployment for people who really need it to survive, but have no problem choking the Congressional legal system with stupid laws regarding women's reproduction that are guaranteed to be challenged by just about anyone who doesn't dress in a wimple and houppelande and think we were still in 1328. How about lobbying to repeal Obamacare for the 46th time, or passing other social laws that go directly to the courts? Think of the money that could go to people who really need it, not Washington lawyers.

Stick it where the sun don't shine, Dave. Whenever you can't answer me, you come up with this "she's a Democrat, and can't come up with specific ideas" when you have NEVER come up with one yourself, except to complain about whatever the Democrats are doing. Then you pile on by accusing me of obfuscation? The KING of obfuscation, who obfuscated by trying to change the focus of the discussion in the first place. What about all the money the Repubs waste by passing stupid social legislation that they know will be challenged? What about the money wasted trying to repeal Obamacare? Or do you think all those lawyer's and court fees come out of thin air? We are all paying for them. That money could better be spend in a hundred different ways, including extending unemployment.

Montrose;

What legislation has Congress recently passed regarding abortion? As far as I know, there's been very little, if any. There's been quite a few laws passed at the state level, but again, I am not aware of any at the federal level. If there has been some legislative efforts, it's been minor. But perhaps I missed it, and hence, my question.

Eighty retired New York City police officers and firefighters were charged on Tuesday in one of the largest Social Security disability frauds ever, a sprawling decades-long scheme in which false mental disability claims by as many as 1,000 people cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, according to court papers.

Scores of those charged in the case essentially stole in plain sight, according to a 205-count indictment and a bail letter, collecting between $30,000 and $50,000 a year based on fabricated claims that they were completely incapacitated by serious psychiatric disorders. Many said that their actions in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were responsible for their psychiatric conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety or depression.

But their Facebook pages and other websites, according to the court papers, tell a starkly different story.

The bail letter includes photographs culled from the Internet that show one riding a jet ski and others working at jobs ranging from helicopter pilot to martial arts instructor. One is shown fishing off the coast of Costa Rica and another sitting astride a motorcycle, while another appeared in a television news story selling cannoli at the Feast of San Gennaro on Mulberry Street in Manhattan.

This is really grovelling by the Rolling Stone. I guess readership is way down.

January 7, 2014 4:45 PM - MontroseMorris
Yes, philandering is bi-partisan. Trying to blame it all on Dems is ridiculous, so Dave will try.

Reagan's marriage to Jane Wyman was floundering, due to his involvement in politics but more from the premature death of their third child, but he then had an affair with a British star named Patricia Roc, aka "Bed Roc." He and Wyman divorced.

Bob Dole had an affair with Meredeth Roberts in the 1960s, also while his marriage floundered, before he and his first wife divorced. She came forward with the affair, and he never denied it, but when it came out when he was running against Clinton, the press decided it wasn't relevant anymore, since it had happened 30 some years before, and never went any farther with it than a headline or two. There's a book written about the whole mess (the press decisions).

Personally, I think cheating on your spouse is awful, and puts you in my "dog" category, no matter what party you are in, but is a personal problem between the parties involved. It does not make one a better or a worse politician, except when those who have cheated cast aspersions on other cheaters, while taking the moral high ground. That is hypocrisy of the worst sort. Newt Gingrich was one of the worst of those.

According to an article in the Daily Mail,

In his biography of Patricia Roc, one of the British cinema’s top box-office stars of the 1940s and 1950s, Hodgson alleges that in 1945, with his first marriage to screen star Jane Wyman in ruins, Reagan suffered a severe nervous breakdown.

This startling fact has never been revealed before, but Hodgson had access to Miss Roc’s private papers and they detail her scandalous affairs with married men — which earned her the name ‘Bed Roc’ within the film industry,

According to Hodgson, it was only Roc’s willingness to have a passionate affair with Reagan that prevented him from taking his own life — something he was threatening, such was the depth of his depression following the collapse of his marriage.

Their relationship, which began in Hollywood, where Roc was starring in a movie, continued in London while Reagan was filming at a British studio.

And Hodgson maintains that if Roc had accepted the newly-divorced Reagan’s subsequent proposal of marriage in 1948, there would have been, in the fullness of time, an English First Lady in the White House.

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1327173/Patricia-Roc-The-British-beauty-saved-Ronald-Reagan-suicide.html#ixzz2pkiaQdSS

Funny how Wiki is a horrible source when cited for anything else, but now is the holy writ because they don't mention any affairs.

Hey Benson, I really don't give a flying fahootie if Reagan had an affair or not. Rare is the Hollywood actor who hasn't, and rarer still a powerful politician. I also don't care if you like my sources. You asked, I answered. You can choose to believe the guy, and therefore the woman behind him who said it happened, or not. Just as I can choose to believe all the sources you cite for whatever reason. If you want to believe that St. Ronald of Reagan was as pure as the driven snow, so be it.

Montrose;

Given the fields that Reagan came from (Hollywood and politics), it's highly likely that he had an affair. However, unlike some of the other cases cited above, it is not a known fact, and I don't take the word of a single scandal-monger as fact.

I think people should be held to account when they make an argument, and play loose with the facts. And that is why I asked you to cite your source. As I said, it speaks for itself.

January 7, 2014 7:45 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
yeah, stoops. i'm finding that i like pewter better than satin nickel, polished chrome, etc. because those seem too shiny for a dresser. just been googling like crazy and checking pinterest and houzz. home depot and lowes have crap :-(

probably 'pewter finish' and not pewter , no?
January 7, 2014 7:47 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
with current setup, i'd need 16 handles. i've decided that i'm going to fill 8 of the spaces and just use 8 handles. will also be filling 3 spaces so i only need 4 knobs. if i kept all the existing holes, the hardware will wind up costing more than double what the dresser did!
January 7, 2014 7:48 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
yes, you are right pete. pewter finish, not solid pewter. i'd hate to even think what that would cost if it were!
January 7, 2014 7:49 PM - dibs
The pewter will be fine. Pete has no idea what he's talking about. Besides, they aen't real pewter, just made to look like it.

Tourists are back down to a normal level, Snappy. It's possible to walk down the street again! But have no idea about the tunnel - you mean the tunnel to the subway, right?

I don't like Braithwaite at all. At least O'Brien was entertaining.

And Thomas is going to fall hard when he does.

What other options did O'Brien have that she left the show?

regular IRA up only 10%. There were several years when everyone could have one and contribute - back when Ronnie was president but after he was finished having affairs. My mother insisted I open one.

January 7, 2014 8:14 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
part, what you see below is one drawer. has spaces for 4 pulls, each 2.5" center to center. my plan is to fill, sand and paint the upper two holes on the right and left and place pulls on the lower section, reducing the number of pulls for one drawer from 4 to 2. will that be a bad thing?

Clear to me. I think it is a bad thing. The drawer design is that of an 'illusion'. One draw made to look like two. By eliminating the upper pair you ruin the balance and intention. Honestly, I think you are obsessing over getting the greatest pulls in the world at a low price. Better to have the 16 at a lesser price even if you are not in love with the pulls.

partridge,
I used to be in charge of the gate locks on my father's cash register repair shop in ENY.
Every winter, at least one of those heavy steel locks would freeze up. Hot water worked good but make sure you bring them in and place them on the radiator to dry out completely.

Over time we started using Lock-Ease with graphite powder every Winter and the sticking problem went away.

January 7, 2014 9:23 PM - Legion
ok,
to unfreeze a frozen water line behind the wall;
-first open the faucet to alleviate pressure inside the line.
Water has the unique property of increasing in size as it freezes (this has to do with the Hydrogen bond structure but I won't get into that boring part).

-next, open the other lines on the same pipe run to make sure they don't freeze as well, keep them open a bit to allow the water to keep moving.

-increase the heat by turning the thermostat up, I raised it to 73 from the usual 70.

-then identify the frozen pipe. If it's exposed, as in a basement, not a problem just place a heater nearby and allow it to defrost slowly.

-if it's behind a wall, this is a problem, a big problem because you need access somehow to get the heat to the pipe. You can wait till the house heats up more but you take the chance that the pipes don't heat up enough and continue to freeze and eventually burst. Big problem.
Usually, heating the house is enough to slowly thaw the pipes.
This pipe in my upstairs bathroom was behind the tile wall so I removed the medicine cabined to open the space behind the wall.
I placed a small ceramic heater in the bathroom and aimed it at the opening.

-next, I looked under the sink since the pipe run was connected to the sink as well. The sink had running water so I knew the freeze was located just after the copper connection to the sink.
Problem was that this area of pipe was located behind ceramic tile.
Out came the ball peen hammer.
I made a hole in the wall under the sink, inside the cabinet. Not a problem really since nobody sees that area and it will allow warm air to circulate through better in the future.

After two hours of heating the pipe through the medicine cabinet opening and the opening under the sink, the pipe was unfrozen.

To prevent a recurrence, I'll open the area under the sink more and insulate the area behind the wall better using some sort of spray foam.
The house was built in 1935, so once in a while I expect a plumbing issue.

was it the hot water or cold water supply line that froze (or both) ? Mpemba effect.
I thought of asking top floor resident to run her bathroom faucet or let it drip. That side of building not attached (on that level anyway). Last thing need is burst pipe. I forget name of that new pipe material that expands and is relatively easy to install and can connect/join to copper pipes if need to.

Keeping the water trickling a bit overnight helps to prevent freezing pipes too.

January 7, 2014 10:44 PM - petebklyn
Pex. That's it. Now you've got me worried about tenants bathrooms. Inside brick wall of course but behind the tile/sheetrock.
Once there was a leak in middle of winter which I presumed was because of frozen pipe up there. Turned out it was a screw that had been pressing against the copper pipe for years and finally punctured.
Of course I have forgotten once or twice to shut off/drain garden pipe and had that burst over the years.
