Still sick.
Going to Ikea then dropping in on a party yesterday probably did not help.

In my recent experience, it is now typical for companies to give experienced workers 4 weeks vacation after a minimal (like 3-6 month) waiting period.
Similarly, companies are greatly reducing or eliminating vesting periods for 401K match and even retirement plans.

Companies are adjusting to the fact that most workers switch jobs multiple times over the course of a career, and the old models of greatly rewarding longevity/loyalty no longer make sense.

The astronauts in the space station now have "Kirobo" a Japanese robot that chats with them and keeps them company. Frankly I bet they'd rather have a blow up doll that says nothing.

Yes, the concept of accruing additional vacation over time seems to be gone, sadly.

Yes, but 4 weeks sounds great for someone who just started and 6-8 weeks is just excessive. I bet a lot of banks still have that ridiculous policy that employees need to be gone for two consecutive weeks at least once a year. That policy really penalized those who were only getting 2 weeks

4 weeks starting off, going up to 5 weeks when you hit 10 or 15 years seems pretty typical for experienced professional workers.

I call that a good thing, not sad.
Otherwise, I would have taken me a long time to get back to where I was when I switched jobs.

For entry level workers, policies I see now are more traditional : start off with 2, get 3 at 5 years, 4 at 10 years.

You think I over ordered, Cobble?

I would say 4 ft high without 'antlers'. I'm hoping they breakdown for shipping with easy assembly.

No, not necessarily. It was the storage issue, but if they're shipped unassembled, that would work.

1) she wants to drive, for which we must leave the city limits. 2) she wants to go to Lush, a chain of stores that sell "green" toiletries and cosmetics. 3) there's a Lush in Roosevelt Field.

I have a Santa's Helper errand to run extremely early tomorrow morning (like leave the house before 7:30) and maybe we'll go after that. Roosevelt Field and its stores open at 8.

Salaried staff who work on weekends also get comp time or pay, which is pretty rare in IT.

Paid vacation is an entitlement, and is also a technique for restoring employee morale and sustaining employee productivity. One of the disadvantages of not using whips and chains, I guess :-) Of course, in a truly deregulated free market economy, whips and chains would not be prohibited.

8 year old killed on way to school killed by truck:
" The truck driver, identified by the police as Mauricio Osorio-Palominos, 51, of Newark, was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, and operating a vehicle in violation of safety rules. Mr. Osorio-Palominos was working for Roadtex Transportation Corporation, a shipping company based in New Jersey, the police said.
A spokesman for the company could not immediately be reached for comment.
Roadtex Transportation Corporation has been sued multiple times for negligence, including six times in the tristate area, and its trucks have been involved in several fatal collisions, court records show. "

all those damn gov regs -- needing a license, safety rules, etc. And all those frivolous law suits against the company-
when are we going to get tort reform?

And if I ever get called for jury duty I either use my vacation days or get paid the bare minimum

lush smell doesn't bother me as long as i don't go sniffin' lots of things. i limit myself to 2 things to whiff each visit then that's it. i usually just go in and grab some charcoal soap and leave though, so not there long enough to get the sneezies. actual perfume counters in dept. stores is what can make me truly ill. i hate that they position it so you have no choice but to pass it in the store. all those competing smells is gross. as papa snappy used to say, smells like a french whore house up in there.

I love Troy, but I wonder about its leadership sometimes. Apparently, Troy is the only city in the Capital City area to not have a comprehensive snow removal plan. They just winged it when it snowed, and since there's been only mild winters up here for the last few years, they got away with it. But last week's 2 snowstorms, which dumped around 18 inches on the city in only two days, exposed their lack of planning. Now they are scrambling to put a plan on paper that will cover snow removal. The plowing wasn't bad, it was the snow removal so people can park, and get through the streets, that screwed them up. The local press is having a field day, as are the usual "I told you so-ers."

I guess I am one of the fortunate ones. I get 3 weeks, half a day off Fridays, unlimited sick days, closed from christmas through new years and all other holidays. I never take all of my 3 weeks though and work sorta flexibly through weekends and days off. Job is sorta project based and eventhough I cant take off as much time as I like, I'll be outta job if I take advantage of it. VP and above in our company have unlimited days off period but also never take time except a vacation here and there once or twice a year but always reachable via email or cell.

Uggh! I'm supposed to go to a holiday party tonight in Clinton Hill. It's a beautiful traditional pot luck Christmas party with caroling around the piano.
But I feel icky right now. Not really in the holiday spirit. Wow, I wrote this post 5 hours ago and for the most part it still holds true.

I went into Manhattan to buy a gift for my wife, and then went through the Rockefeller Center area AND Times Square to get to the train station. What a zoo. For the life of me I don't understand why the city allows all of these street peddlers in these touristy area. Every third one is selling the same crap, all of which can be found in any non-descript gift store in the mall.

My wife wants to go to Rockefeller Center tomorrow to see the tree. I'm going to try to talk her out of it - wait till after Christmas when it's a little bit more sane.

doesn't seem more bizarre or unintelligible to me, than myself or some others, at times, and I don't often hold conversations but just pop in occasionally with a comment. I just don't have anything to say, or often think it would be inappropriate to say what I think and maybe she's the same. doesn't mean we're fakers. also, I'm basically a trusting person and don't see any downside to taking her at her word. I could be wrong but it doesn't really matter if I'm wrong.

Well, I am officially enrolled in my new health plan. My premium after the federal tax credit will be $111.57 monthly. I will enjoy a total out-of-pocket payment of $1100 and NO co-payments. I will keep my same PCP and my favored hospital, Methodist, is on their provider list as are Lutheran and Maimonides.

Yes, it truly is awesome. A word I try to use sparingly. The roof over my head only costs me about $750 P/M for maintenance, RE tax, utilities. I may be sitting on a very sizable asset, but it is very inexpensive to stay here. With the new health insurance policy and the low apartment costs, my needs are few.

Enter zip and choose search all plans. Not sure if some hospitals will pick and choose plans accepted. That is what Benson has said. Can't find a way to enter my selected plan in their drop down list, so I used HMO.
December 22, 2013 9:32 AM - Cobble B. Hiller
Sorry, Pete, I'm still pre-coffee.

It turns out my friend is having her surgery at Beth Israel, and so we're trying to make sure whichever plan we sign her up for includes them. Though I imagine it's the doctors more than the hospitals who pick and choose. I wish I could just go see the plans more easily. I'm not a fan of this website at all.

Partridge;

I think you are either being mis-guided, or are not reading the fine print correctly. By definition, silver plans have co-pays and deductibles. It is the platinum plans that have no co-pay (but they have a much higher premium). Here is a summary of the plan you discussed above:

Partridge;

Do NOT rely on what the state's site says. I've reported this before: it is chock full of errors. I can tell you will 100% certainty that, by the definition of the Obamacare law, silver plans have co-pays and a fairly high deductible. Know what you are getting into, lest it blow a hole in your budget. Go directly to Empire's website to find out the terms of the plan.

Will do, Benson. Thanks for the advice. But really, how can the details be wrong for months now without any correction?
December 22, 2013 10:14 AM - Deleted
Partridge;

I can't open the link you provided, but, looking at the screen shot: nowhere does it say there are no co-pays. In fact, it says that there is a $1100 maximum out-of-pocket, which means that this is what you will pay in co-pays and deductibles before you receive 100% coverage.
December 22, 2013 10:25 AM - Deleted
1100 out of pocket is nothing. My policy for which I pay $350/month is 18k out of pocket.
December 22, 2013 10:27 AM - Cobble B. Hiller
benson, It seems like, from what I am reading, since LP is eligible for subsidy, and she is -- given that she is getting lower premium -- the co-pays etc. may be lower or none. I think it will only show that once you plug in all your info, and it's calculated. No?

This is what I am reading, p. 16: http://www.enrollamerica.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/GetCoveredGuide.pdf

The subsidies goes towards the premiums, not the co-pays. Again, that is what the different metal levels (bronze, silver, etc.) are supposed to signify. The higher the metal level, the less the co-pays, but the higher the premium (the base premium, from which you subtract your subsidy).

I cannot overemphasize this advice enough: call Empire Blue Cross directly, for all matters. Do not rely on any website to determine if your doctor is in the network for YOUR SPECIFIC PLAN. You should call the insurance company directly.

The newspaper reports are not false: these plans have severely restricted networks because of the low amount they are paying. Don't call your doctor and just ask "do you accept Empire Blue?", because any insurance company has many plans. Ask about your specific plan.
December 22, 2013 10:42 AM - Partridge
EmpireBlue verified my doctor for this and ALL of their plans.
December 22, 2013 10:44 AM - Cobble B. Hiller
"The subsidies goes towards the premiums, not the co-pays."

No, benson, I think you may be missing a piece of the puzzle. Read the pdf I posted, p. 16, specifically. There is "cost-sharing assistance" for co-pay, etc., in addition to subsidy/tax credit for premium.

Cobble;

You're correct: I forgot about the cost-reduction aspect which lowers the deductible. LP e-mailed her plan details to me. It is as I postulated above: for most covered services, you have to meet the $1100 deductible before the no co-pay provision kicks in.

That is still a pretty good deal. For a normal silver plan, the deductible is around $3000.

lp - glad you found insurance that works for you.

now for my strongly held opinion: I believe there should be meaningful copays for everything and that there are ways that could be set up to help folks who can't afford the copays, to get help so they can still go to the dr when needed. would help keep costs down of unnecessary dr visits & tests. I always got high deductible - high copay plans to keep premium payments lower.

hmmmmm.....i kinda figured 11 was late. new snappy niece is still a believer (as you can tell by her letter to santa i posted the other day). she asked the snappy nephew, who is 16, and he said no, not knowing her mom still lets her believe. she went to bbs#2 and, with watery eyes, said, "bbs#2, snappy nephew says there is no santa. the kids at school said so, too. you can tell me the truth. i can take it like a big girl. is there no santa?" not wanting to go against what the snappy-in-law lets her believe, he said, "sweetie, ignore the snappy nephew." she signed with relief, gave him a hug and walked away. i think 11 is a stretch, but hey, not my kid so my lips are zipped. i suspect when she's finally told/figures it out, it's gonna hurt.

oh no! i'm not getting in the middle of that one! her mom can decide when she wants to disabuse her of the notion of santa. auntie snappy shall just smile and nod! not sure how long she can keep it up though. mama snaps told me today that new snappy niece gets teased at school over it because none of the other kids in her grade believe anymore. but she's holding fast to the idea of santa.

December 22, 2013 7:38 PM - etson
Thanks rf!

Welcome back, etson! Hope to see you before you depart for that other borough!

Why traumatic? Bad flight? I hear all sorts of flights are being canceled due to weather.
December 22, 2013 7:48 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
We should plan a post-holiday party. Maybe even the boycotters will join us.

Welcome back, etson!

I'm going to miss Marty. He's such a classic Brooklyn character. Who is replacing him, and why don't I know this?

Oh, right, Eric Adams. Ok.

who? was there an election? don't remember that.
December 22, 2013 8:11 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Yeah, there was, I forgot. I've been a little busy. Politics has been off my radar, mostly, for many months.

Wow, it was very slow today in comparison to yesterday. But little rf was a joy to behold! So poised and confident. No fear of strangers or any of their requests. Quick learner and hard worker. She wasn't 'allowed' to sit all day. Smiled until we closed. Love her! What a great acquisition she will be to the wisest college that entices her. rf, she is really special.
December 22, 2013 8:14 PM - etson
Thanks all! Had some paperwork hassle re the car @ the border that detained me for a few hours & still isn't sorted, but they let me across eventually.
December 22, 2013 8:15 PM - rf
Partridge, she's TIRED! You worked that girl! And that's good. She had a nice time today and learned a lot.
December 22, 2013 8:18 PM - rf
Marty was term-limited out. Eric Adams was the only Democratic candidate who collected enough signatures to run in the Democratic primary so he won unopposed and the Republicans didn't nominate anyone.
December 22, 2013 8:23 PM - petebklyn
you think marty, quinn, etc will fade away quietly?
December 22, 2013 8:24 PM - rf
They'll go out and make a lot of money.
December 22, 2013 8:26 PM - etson
As far as I remember, Eric Adams is OK, for someone from the 'other' side.
Because of the weird boundaries my PS place is / was in his state senate district, not that I noticed aside from the occasional mailing.
December 22, 2013 8:28 PM - rf
He was a cop and the founder of 100 Black Men in Law Enforcement.

I told her, very early in the day, that the appropriate response to a customer's "Thank you" is "You're welcome" and not, "No problem". She took it well and proceeded as instructed.

Stockboy is a "No problem." kinda guy. Drives me crazy.

I can live with ' no problem', it's no problem.
The response to 'thank you' that absolutely enrages me is 'mm hmmm'. Had an associate several years ago that used to do that until I snapped and yelled at him for it.

LP, tell me something. After you picked the health plan that you liked, or thought you might like to get. What were your next steps. And when does one find out if one is eligible for subsidies or cost sharing in the process?

rf, you see my email? lemme know if she's game.
December 22, 2013 8:36 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
welcome back to the promised land, etson!
December 22, 2013 8:37 PM - rf
Snappy, I forwarded it to her. I think she's too tired today to do much. Don't know if she's checking email. I will text you her number and you can text her. Just tell her to check her email.
December 22, 2013 8:39 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
oy, i detest texting! just let her know to email me at some point when she's recovered :-)
December 22, 2013 8:40 PM - petebklyn
"Glad she followed instructions!" -- doesn't she always?
December 22, 2013 8:42 PM - rf
Pete, it is obvious that you have never parented a teenager! You were a teenager once, weren't you?
December 22, 2013 8:44 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
i followed instructions as a teen...whenever i felt like it :-)
December 22, 2013 8:46 PM - rf
Don't we all, Snappy, don't we all.
December 22, 2013 8:47 PM - petebklyn
that was said with a smirk.
December 22, 2013 8:48 PM - rf
I guess I'm older than you because my teen years are one big ugly blur!
December 22, 2013 8:51 PM - petebklyn
I probably did follow instructions. But I also didn't let them know 1/2 of what I was doing.
December 22, 2013 8:58 PM - Partridge
Cobble, the eligibility for subsidies comes up while viewing the plan options. I selected the one I ultimately chose today weeks ago but did not proceed to the check-out phase. It rested in my account as my chosen plan. I received an email reminding me to complete the application process about a week ago. Said that must be done by December 23rd in order to guarantee enrollment by January 1.

Today was simple. I proceeded to check-out. It asked me to agree to the assertion that all info was correct concerning salary and that any changes to salary would effect the plans subsidy, blah, blah, blah. Check this box if you agree. Equivalent to a signature, blah, blah, blah. Poof!

States confirmation number and advises that I will be contacted by carrier for payment and any proof of eligibility requirements. Assume by mail. I have not paid the premium yet. Have not been asked yet. Again assume that will come in mail as a bill from BCBS.
December 22, 2013 9:02 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Uh-oh, Dec. 23! Tomorrow!
December 22, 2013 9:03 PM - rf
December 23 is to assure coverage on January 1.
December 22, 2013 9:05 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
But could you see that you were eligible, and the amounts of subsidy?
December 22, 2013 9:06 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
I know! My friend and I were going to meet Thursday to sign her up! Guess it's tomorrow night!
December 22, 2013 9:08 PM - petebklyn
not sure what 'knowing amount of subsidy' does for you. seemed to me
that amount you pay varies by amount of income you show....The website
link allowed you to put in different income, age, smoker, etc and you could see how much premium would vary based upon those criteria.
December 22, 2013 9:10 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
It didn't show us the amount of subsidy the other day when we looked and started registering her. I'm worried now.
December 22, 2013 9:12 PM - Partridge
Yes. Has she signed up for the government site yet? That is the harder part. Name, rank, serial numbers and such. They search the federal data base for your ss number and find your last tax returns and base it roughly on that. Then ask you to amend based on current info. Once all that is complete, they know what to offer the individual. The offerings are clear, and priced. Full price and subsidies. All clear in each plan.
December 22, 2013 9:16 PM - Partridge
I don't know what Pete is referring to. I never saw a link like that. I had no way of comparing anything until I forked over my personal data.
December 22, 2013 9:16 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
We started by going to healthcare.gov. We filled out registration, ss#, and got up to the point of looking at plans. Numbers were not discounted or showing subsidy amounts. She is an immigrant, with valid work permit. F*ckity f*ck, now I'm super nervous.
December 22, 2013 9:20 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
F*ck, I can't login to see what's what. Damn it!
December 22, 2013 9:23 PM - Partridge
Do you have her user id and passcode? If not, get it and start looking.
December 22, 2013 9:32 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
I do, I'm looking. I was able to log in eventually. They didn't accept her work permit. I need more paperwork to prove immigration.

December 22, 2013 9:39 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Does anyone know what the next enrollment date is?
December 22, 2013 9:41 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
sounding like you gotta jump through a lot of hoops for this site/insurance. but i think in the end if you wind up with decent coverage that you can afford, then it's totally worth it. good luck!

and with that, i bid you all nitey nite :-) sweet dreams everyone
December 22, 2013 9:45 PM - rf
I think it's Jan 15 for Feb 1 coverage.
December 22, 2013 9:47 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
"I think it's Jan 15 for Feb 1 coverage."

Ok, that would be ok. Not optimal, but ok.
December 22, 2013 9:48 PM - Partridge
No, I don't Cobble. I imagine it will be ongoing. If she is covered now and her policy is not being cancelled like mine and Benson's daughter's is, there is probably time to do it later. I bet every month until this all gets settled. Can't imagine they would set annual enrollments only. Too many lost and confused out there.
December 22, 2013 9:50 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
I need to find someone who knows this stuff inside and out, and can help immigrants. Can you guys help me find out who those people are? Are there non-profit organizations that can help her figure this out?
December 22, 2013 9:56 PM - Partridge
Is she covered now and after 1 jan? There are help folks listed on Blue Cross site and NYState site. If this must be done tomorrow, I don't know if you will get thru on phone.
December 22, 2013 9:56 PM - rf
Yes.

There are navigators paid for by the government. I heard someone speak from the Community Service Society and they run a navigator program.
http://www.cssny.org/programs/entry/community-service-society-navigator-network

It's free.
December 22, 2013 9:57 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
No, she only has some 'catastrophic' AARP thing. I can't talk about this anymore.
December 22, 2013 10:04 PM - petebklyn
this is what I was talking about where you put in criteria:
http://www.valuepenguin.com/ppaca/exchanges/ny
December 22, 2013 10:10 PM - Partridge
Benson posted that site before and it was not relevant to my offerings.

Prices and cost sharing changes based on individual.
December 22, 2013 10:13 PM - petebklyn
informationally I found it interesting....just to get idea of what costs were depending on location, age, income, etc.
December 22, 2013 10:14 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
This person's situation is not the same as LP. Thank you all for trying to help, but we need an expert for this. And I thought we had until Jan. 1 to sign up. And my friend didn't have the right paperwork when we did the first part. So it's going to have to be for Feb. 1, which is going to be very disappointing to her.
December 22, 2013 10:20 PM - rf
Cobble, use the link I posted:
http://www.cssny.org/programs/entry/community-service-society-navigator-network

They are the experts.
December 22, 2013 10:21 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Yes, rf. I got it. Thanks.

G'nite, All.
