Here is the commissioned necklace that I made on Monday. I used iridescent ancient glass fragments. Each bead is unique and steeped in history and wonder. I combined them with the tiniest of gold beads (for sparkle and interest) and a delicate knurled link chain.

The client was overjoyed. Christmas gift for his wife who has several other of my pieces. Photo not so great, but you get the idea.

When I was in California, I ended up at Whole Foods once every couple of years, either looking for some odd ingredient or because I needed something and it was convenient to where I was at the moment.

I am sure that the Brooklyn Whole Foods will cost much more than Trader Joes and Costco, but have a much larger selection. I also guess it will cost more than Pathmark and Key Foods, but not be a shithole.

Bitcoin is an experiment to see if an “open source” currency backed by no assets and no government can be created.
So far the experiment has been a success, but I expect it to crash soon.

New guidelines suggest that people over 60 can have a higher blood pressure than previously recommended before starting treatment to lower it. The advice, criticized by some physicians, changes treatment goals that have been in place for more than 30 years.

Until now, people of all ages were told to strive for blood pressures below 140/90, with some taking multiple drugs to achieve that goal. But the guidelines committee, which spent five years reviewing evidence, concluded that the goal for people over 60 should be 150/90.

Flight from JFK to San Diego is at 6:30. Am considering taking the Q to Atlantic, LIRR to Jamaica, and then the AirTrain, rather than my normal F/A/Howard Beach AirTrain

Cons: same time to destination, more expensive ($7 for LIRR)
Pros: LIRR would probably be nicer than the subway

December 18, 2013 12:28 PM - MontroseMorris
I'd go for the LIRR, too.
December 18, 2013 12:32 PM - rf
It can be a pretty big schlep (depending on the subway line; really easy from the 2-3 going toward Manhattan, lots of steps or multiple elevators for the other lines) getting to the LIRR from the subway, and another schlep to the Airtrain. There are elevators and escalators to the Airtrain at Jamaica so it's not as bad as it could be, but it's not an across-the-platform change.

In terms of what my time is worth, I'd prefer to go with LIRR/Air Train over cab. Both train rides are pleasant and I can read the paper/veg out/think about life. I don't feel relaxed in car service, my main thought is waiting for the ride to end and hoping that the driver doesn't get into an accident.

aren't the knicks one of the most profitable teams in the league? no incentive for mgmt to do a good job
December 18, 2013 2:32 PM - More4Less
Doing a good job or not doesn't impact much on how much the spend on the team as they in capped league. If it was ran real well, they'll save a little on player personnel cost but bigger impact is a spike the team mkt value which seems to go up when it's winning or won a trophy - I suspect that's the reason Lakers are worth more

I just think you should be more informed than what you learn from Jon Stewart.

I need mortgage rates to get lower (say to 2.5% for 15 yrs fixed) so I can re-finance again. Somehow, I don't see fed making that happen

My chorus is singing in the Met Life building in an hour. I REALLY don't feel like going into Manhattan right now.

On the plus side, a workman finally came to patch up the holes in the wall today.
December 18, 2013 3:43 PM - pepper
At lease it's a straight shot on the 4/5, RC. You won't even have to go outside in Manhattan...

Steinberg at SAC found guilty on all 5 counts. Likely a long prison term
December 18, 2013 4:00 PM - ilovestoops
rc: what holes in the wall?

I think Slopey talked about different factions on the OT but I don't feel part of a faction and I don't think most people do. I don't get any hidden messages here. Last night was lots of fun (OT words!) and I wish everyone had come.

Good Steinberg probably deserves it, but i know absolutely nothing about the case or even what SEC is.

SAC is Stephen A. Cohen's hedge fund. I believe he has turned it into just his "family office" and no longer has any clients. He's a scumbag. His Greenwichhouse...

That's a "compound" not a house. Ridiculous.

Gotta love the bridge.

Wonder what his property taxes are. Probably more than the GNP of a small country.

I expected the jury to be deliberating for more than a day. I guess the prosecution's case was easily made, wonder if this will make others plead guilty instead of risking a trial.

No idea who else they have indicted. Seems Cohen dodged it all.

I don't think Arkady is reading the OT. I will email to tell her that her d-word isn't taking new patients (except for my kid via special dispensation).

I guess that among the international super-rich, part of the dick swinging involves having an apartment in a super-tall luxurious building. My firm is working on two of them, 432 Park Ave and 99 Church St. There is another one going up on 57th Street by Extell with which we are not involved. This afternoon at our management meeting the principals informed us of a new project that I can't reveal yet. In the ultimate feat of dick-swinging, the sponsors of this project want it to be finished before 432 Park Ave, which is already well under construction.

The apartments will be selling for $6500/square foot!!!

snappy - you're going to need help schlepping everything - I can go with rf to help bring stuff downstairs if you want. when are you taking it to the hospital?

pepper: I've been on-line all day trying to find a place for xmas dinner - lots of choices but hard to find the right combo of food, price, loc, etc.; took so much time that I haven't been on the OT much

Thanks for the update, stoops, but I was really only kidding ;o) - just a quiet night here... Did you find a place for Christmas dinner? I'm kind of surprised that there are lots of choices; would've thought that very few places would be open...
December 18, 2013 10:09 PM - rf
Stoops, Snappy wrote to the hospital people to find out if we can drop the stuff off on Sunday. Let's see what they say. I think we can get it down the steps at her house and into the car, and we can pick your stuff up then if you'll be around. It's possible that we'll need 2 people at the hospital and I'll stay in the car to make sure it isn't towed :). Let's see what they say at the hospital.

And if the designated time on Sunday doesn't work for you, you and I can figure out another time to get your gifts. I will be out and about every day.

M4L, I am pretty sure I'll be home in the late afternoon/early evening on Saturday if you want to drop off your stuff at my house.
