Community Banls with 35 employees or less face 12,000+ pages of Volcker Rules. Unclear whether, for example, they can hedge say corn exposure to farmers with commodity futures. Absolutely ridiculous.

Yes, there is. Unfortunately, the right doesn't think the first category actually exists.

And I think the Pope was a good choice for Person of the Year. Snowdon should be in jail, being forgotten, not on the cover of Time as their choice as the most important or newsworthy person of the year. It would only serve to fuel his already overblown ego.

No. I actually don't care about the amount of surveillance. I'm doing nothing wrong. And to have revealed how the surveillance is being conducted to those who are planning to do wrong is tantamount to treason.

Don't get your panties in such a twist because you didn't think you were being spied on and now you know you are. If you didn't think it was happening before Snowden revealed all then you were being VERY naive

I agree, Randi, that people have a right to know that they were being spied on. Let's face it, Dave is also right in that if people didn't suspect or know that this was already happening, especially internet and cell phone information, then they really were incredibly naieve. 9/11, the Patriot Act and the "War on Terror" should have given them a BIG clue.

HOWEVER, Snowdon went about it in the worst way possible. What he did was treason by most people's definition of the word. Had we been in a conventional war, and this, a different age, he's have been shot already. I'm not an advocate of capital punishment, but in my opinion, he should be under the jail, for life. He didn't just leak secrets, he did it in such a way as to compromise people who are off somewhere doing a dangerous job serving our country. I don't necessarily personally like some of our spycraft operations, but who am I to say they are not necessary for our nation's defense? Not only that, he did it for personal aggrandizement, and that's not a concern over our country's affairs, that's just pure ego.

Pope Francis, on the other hand, is turning out to be a fine spiritual leader to millions of Catholics across the globe, and a religious leader that can easily be respected by other faiths. The Church is at a pivotal point in its history, and unlike his predecessor, who I found incredibly cold and scary, he is not only talking the talk, but is walking the walk, and is a humble shepherd to his flock, not a gold encrusted figurehead. The Church has a lot of issues on its plate, he seems to be the best man for the job in uncertain and interesting times.

sorry, but you are just regurgitating govt talking points. offer proof of this and i might believe you.

some dude in the new yorker said this about the importance of snowden

"So what is Snowden's real crime? Like Ellsberg, Vanunu, and Bradley Manning before him, he uncovered questionable activities that those in power would rather have kept secret. That's the valuable role that whistle-blowers play in a free society, and it's one that, in each individual case, should be weighed against the breach of trust they commit, and the potential harm their revelations can cause. In some instances, conceivably, the interests of the state should prevail. Here, though, the scales are clearly tipped in Snowden's favor."

"dibs doesn't read anything MM and RF post." So very true.

"benson just made an observation and one that was spot on."

Oh really, Dave. YOU made the blanket statement that "Big difference between "can't help themselves" and "won't help themselves", I replied to it. My observation is neither more nor less chock full of facts and figures than yours.

And Benson's little "observation" was even less pithy than yours.

And I'll stop bashing Republicans when they actually accomplish something positive, and tone down the endless rhetoric about the "taking" by poor people. There is plenty of justification. You, on the other hand, just like to be nasty about it.

Randi, we are not going to agree on Snowdon. I don't think he's in any way admirable, and I'm not likely to change my mind.

Typical response^^^^

I guess you really didn't understand what "Big difference between "can't help themselves" and "won't help themselves" meant or, more likely, it didn't fit into your agenda to reply "Yes, there is. Unfortunately, the right doesn't think the first category actually exists."

Pretty pathetic rerply. And yes, as benson said, "very nuanced"

But you won't reply to defend why your statement is a relevant response to mine so I'm not sure why I am bothering.

Ha! My most recent "lady friend" has a name beginning with Z. But that's not going anywhere.

Speaking of which, A (whose name doesn't begin with A) said the said the day before yesterday she would come over to pick up various items of hers yesterday. No word from her yesterday - and I was not surprised at all - but I'm pretty sure she was fighting with her parents.

How typical of a bunch of men to sit around and speculate on whether or not another man is "getting any," simply because his wife may or may not be shooting him a dirty look. Benson, I'm sure the president is grateful for your timeline and concern.

Regarding the president - he gave one of the best speeches of his life at Mandela's funeral, and he and his wife were well received, and were statesmanlike and fine representatives of the United States. The gathering showed that unlike the assertions of certain people, he is indeed liked and respected by the leaders of other nations. The fact that more attention has been paid to his rare moments of levity, as well as the expression on his wife's face, for reasons we really don't even know, is certainly telling.

That photo was taken after the funeral, which was not a weep fest, but a joyous celebration of Mandela's life. I see nothing unstatesmanlike with the president taking a photo with two other world leaders, and everyone is smiling. So they used a cell phone instead of a press photog? Much ado over absolutely NOTHING.

I'm sure it won't cost more for Dante to get to Brooklyn Tech (however he goes) than it now costs for Bloomberg to be driven to the subway and then, with his bodyguards, to City Hall on the 4/5/6 train, while the driver takes the SUV to City Hall.

December 11, 2013 1:20 PM - DeLepp

December 11, 2013 1:32 PM - pepper
Are those real?
December 11, 2013 1:33 PM - rf
I'm sure he can hitch a ride with his dad, DeLepp.

Nice that Bloomberg can afford to forego the salary as mayor. I am just saying that it was likely more expensive for Bloomberg to take the subway to City Hall than it would have been if he had been driven. I understand why he did it, but it certainly wasn't a money-saver, and unlike the rest of the riders, he was given a ride in the mayoral SUV from his townhouse to the subway station.

As for whether mayoral children get bodyguards, I think it probably depends on whether they need them, i.e., whether the children are at risk. Dante's race and his Afro makes him rather conspicuous on the Upper East Side. At Brooklyn Tech, not so much and I understand that the family has neither asked or received special treatment there. I am sure that Giuliani's kids didn't take the subway to school.

If it turns out that there are lunatics looking to harm the kid, then I think he deserves the bodyguard since his father's job put him in that position.

Sigh... I'm always late for the arguments. As usual, I have more questions than answers...

"I don't necessarily personally like some of our spycraft operations, but who am I to say they are not necessary for our nation's defense?"

Is it O.K. for our national security industry to not follow the law? How much is necessary, and how much is just a fishing expedition? Is there even a difference when it comes to pre-emptive security measures? Should we, as run-of-the-mill citizens even be informed about such things?

"Treason: 1. (Government, Politics & Diplomacy) violation or betrayal of the allegiance that a person owes his sovereign or his country, esp by attempting to overthrow the government; high treason"

Is Lloyd Blankfein guilty of treason? Is Barry Bonds or Lance Armstrong? Does any corrupt, indifferent, or malevolent financier "owe allegiance" to any nation at all, or is any business activity considered to be multi-national, and thus allegiance-neutral?

I suspect there are hundreds of thousands of treasonous individuals every day who escape either notice or classification. Is Dick Cheney still considered a war-criminal outside of the U.S.? Is Snowden's case really that unique, or is it just the scope?

Oh well, back to work. See y'all this evening...

From the just released CBO report, the top 40% of wage earners pay 106% of individual income taxes.
Edited at December 11, 2013 3:43 PM
December 11, 2013 3:47 PM - MontroseMorris
How can anyone pay/do/fill MORE than 100% of anything? That doesn't even make sense. When people say, "He gave 150%", they are speaking in hyperbole. If 100% is all, you can't have more than all.
December 11, 2013 3:50 PM - dibs
Because the lower percentages get net transfers FROM the government in the form of transfers. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it isn't real. it's from the CBO, not Fox News. The lowest 20% have a negative 15% contribution to income taxes.

Here's the report…

December 11, 2013 4:04 PM - BoerumHillScott
From the study, the column for “all income taxes” paid by the top 40% is 86.4%. The 106% comes from taking only federal income tax and ignoring other taxes, including SS.

The top 40%’s percentage of before tax income is 72.3% and after tax income is 69.1%.

Progressive, but hardly class warfare, especially when more regressive state taxes are taken into account.

DH,

Dave might be researching for material to rant about for tomorrow's OT - that takes time to learn both sides of the argument

One sib of mine was born with a heart murmur, it went away.

LP is right, randi, everyone has something they have to deal with. No one is unscathed. Your's sounds manageable. Though I'm sure it is shocking, you will adjust over time, difficult as this may seem now. I'm sorry this happened, but better to find out sooner than later.

Back from my folks' house. I do their paperwork for them once a week now.

Turns out that the two sisters who put out the Christmas creche in Red Hook that got taken over by the feral cats are friends of my parents. They live directly across the street from the VFW where my parents and a lot of old timers hang out.

The two sisters own the 4 story building, and they are the only occupants. They also own several buildings in the area. One of the cats that has taken up residence is actually theirs - it is not feral. It has invited its friends from the neighborhood!

rf: I'd love to know what kid's that age like, as well. what about motorized action toys or some type of game. if you go onto toy sites or amazon, you can filter for age and gender. although I'd love to follow lp's example, it's just not practical when I have no idea what to get

stoops, for the Brooklyn Hospital toy drive, I assume the hospital people will figure out how to give everything out. And some of it will likely go to kids who are patients in the hospital. They are asking for a broad range of gifts so presumably they will have many kids to sort out.

This is for one particular kid living in a shelter with his family. I would give a Target gift card (with a Metrocard to get him and someone else to Target and back) but I think it's possible that his parent(s) may feel they have to take it to provide for the family. Ugh.

Have you been reading the series in the Times about the family in the shelter in the building that used to be Cumberland Hospital, adjacent to the Ft. Greene projects? It's about one 12-year-old girl in particular and it's a heartbreaker. The series is what motivated someone to set up this gift drive. The principal of an elementary school in Bed-Stuy (not really close to my house, closer to where Dave used to live) gave this woman a list of kids in the school who are living in shelters or otherwise precariously, plus this "12-year-old sibling-boy."

I asked some other parents who have sons around that age for suggestions.

I think I will get nice toiletry sets for teen girls for the Brooklyn Hospital drive. That's what I got other years that Cobblesnaps did a toy drive.

I've gotten several things already for the Brooklyn hospital drive. Really wanted to concentrate on the older kids since I think they're the most "forgotten" but it's really hard to figure out what to get for them. I haven't read the series but heard an interview with the journalist.

Yes I think I heard the same interview, Stoops. Just read today's part. As I said, very tough to read. But worth it.
