Yum, pie. I could go for some pie. Pumpkin and Pecan and Apple. But, I'm not going to be able to maintain my Adonis-like figure without some help from the kitchen.

GM, all.

Had a quiet weekend at BIL's house. Fixed a fence damaged by Sandy last year, so now BIL's new dog can run around the back yard without getting out. Very sweet dog, adopted from Sean Casey shelter, but BIL is not that into training, so dog is not that into "sit" "stay" etc. A bit of a PITA at meal times.

I certainly agree that the NFL shouldn't be a tax-exempt entity.

But, this is a great paragraph….

"The NFL isn’t the problem, but Congress is. For years, politicians in Washington have argued they’re capable of picking winners and losers in an increasingly complex and competitive free market. What we’ve seen as a result of Washington’s conceit is a stagnant economy in which government tends to reward losers and punish winners."

So very true.

Attention *Rob* and all;

Great article on the current situation in New York City: "the Revolt Against Urban Gentry":

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/11/30/the-revolt-against-urban-gentry.html

This article highlights one of the central facts of modern-day NYC, and why I have a nagging feeling I should leave: the decline of the middle class, which now represents just 16% of its population. I have a middle class sensibility, and there are fewer areas of the city where I feel at home.

The recent election for mayor only adds to my feeling that I should get out. Not so much because of DeBlasio's politics, but the lack of turnout, and the lack of any real political debate or competition in this town. As the article puts it so well: "Under such circumstances the worst miscues by liberals are largely ignored or excused as politics and media take place in a kind of left-wing echo chamber."

wonder how middle class is defined. Always a tricky definition. Article says even in 1970 - 25% middle class.
Of course you can add that some of tea party rhetoric and other more conservative populist appeals can be quite critical of the 'gentry' if talking about Wall Street and big business.

A debate would have happened with a strong GOP candidate, even here. Lhota had a good resume but was not a strong candidate. He did not do a good job defining the terms of debate. No one's going to pay attention to a candidate who is 40+ points behind. DiBlasio vs Bloomberg or Rudy circa 1993 would have resutled in debate. Instead, deBlasio was untested. I don't think 2013 election is a true marker for where we are. We are now used to a City that is run relatively well for a big city, and we have expectations as a public, even if those were not vetted in the election. Either DeBlasio governs well or we'll be having that debate soon enough.

The disparity between haves & have nots is growing everywhere in the US (& abroad in many countries) & the fact that the top 10% has more money/income than the bottom 90% coupled w/ the decline of upward mobility makes 'middle class' an obsolete term.
Lhota argued his points so poorly there couldn't really be a debate.

A few points:

-it's interesting how folks are now including NYC as part of national trends, given that on most days we hear about how different it is than the rest of the country. Well, as the article notes, income inequality is highest in NYC.

-blaming the low turnout on the fact that Lhota was a poor candidate is evidence of the echo chamber, and misses the point. There is simply no critical mass of organizations, political clubs, and population sectors that can counter the large sectors that are invested in the status quo, that is not hospitable to private-sector middle class workers.

-if anyone wants to argue that there has not been an EXODUS of middle class people out of this town, they simply don't know this city beyond the Brownstoner realm.

I happen to agree with every word she said in that quote. In saying that no one makes it on their own, that doesn't take anything away from the great entrepreneurs, inventors, or businessmen/women who have made their fortunes through their hard work, genius, etc. Only an egomaniac insists that they did it alone. December 2, 2013 12:13 PM - dibs
A successful business will pay ever increasing taxes under current law. And that supports government "services" and "infrastructure."

I wonder if Elizabeth Warren has any lecture for those who are on the receiving end of the "social contract". And make no mistake, that speech is a scolding lecture. That's how I usually take it when someone throws the phrases "But I want to be clear" and "Now, look" at me.

I have only been with one person so far and it all started by accident and I loved it.

95% of the populace voted against it.
December 2, 2013 5:47 PM - dibs
I think it's some fucked up process. I don't think 95% voted against it even though they are. It's some petition signed by 4% and that started the process that no one put a stop to. Very bizarre.

I would assume that the Legislature will "do nothing" as is their right to do so.

nobody would be 'forced' to purchase 'rape insurance'. If ones own health insurance does not cover 'abortion services' - a woman could choose (not be forced) to add the rider to cover it. Or could choose not to add the rider.
If someone is raped...the medical bills for exams and tests would probably cost far more than an abortion.

never hated garlic. I still like it.Doesn't repeat on pete. Just burning sensation in stomach. Uncomfortable and makes difficult to sleep.
But it does seem that is used like salt and pepper these days in all sorts of prepared foods and at restaurants. Salt, pepper garlic.
I'm serious when I say in Greece and Spain even though cuisine has reputation for using garlic -- they use in specific dishes not just throw some garlic in everything.
