The Dash
by Linda Ellis copyright 1996

?I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning…to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
and spoke of the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own,
the cars…the house…the cash
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.

So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what’s true and real
and always try to understand
?the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
and more often wear a smile,
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

?So, when your eulogy is being read,
with your life’s actions to rehash…
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent YOUR dash?

I don't think they actually preempted any bits of Person of Interest but yes, they cut in a few times.

And who is that awful sounding woman that reports for CBS 2???? I'll have to find a clip of her…worst sounding voice ever, kinda like Maria Bartiromo with the sloppy "s's" plus a speech impediment.

Good morning. Just had a quick meeting with a young engineer sent to snap a few pix and take a look-see at or building. His firm, Mueser Rutledge, has been sub-contracted by our engineering firm to evaluate the proposed structural reinforcements of our shifted wall. These guys have an impressive client list. I know I feel special.

"Engineers are special people."

Driving that train, high on cocaine,
Casey jones is ready, watch your speed.
Trouble ahead, trouble behind,
And you know that notion just crossed my mind.

This old engine makes it on time,
Leaves central station bout a quarter to nine,
Hits river junction at seventeen to,
At a quarter to ten you know it's travlin again.

Driving that train, high on cocaine,
Casey jones is ready, watch your speed.
Trouble ahead, trouble behind,
And you know that notion just crossed my mind.

Trouble ahead, lady in red,
Take my advice you'd be better off dead.
Switchmans sleeping, train hundred and two is
On the wrong track and headed for you.

Driving that train, high on cocaine,
Casey jones is ready, watch your speed.
Trouble ahead, trouble behind,
And you know that notion just crossed my mind.

Trouble with you is the trouble with me,
Got two good eyes but you still don't see.
Come round the bend, you know it's the end,
The fireman screams and the engine just gleams…

something has to be done about property taxes. here's my 1400sqft condo

2012 $6,364 10.4% $58,658 17.5%
2011 $5,763 7.6% $49,919 9.4%

and then my friends 3600sqft brownstone which he just sold for 2.75mm

2012 $4,983 -- $30,964 1.7%
2011 $4,983 13.4% $30,440 6.0%

WHAT THE FUCK!?

When I was tyhinking about renting a place after I sold the house here, there was no way I'd not have an ice maker. The dispenser isn't really that necessary but the maker is.

I'd say it's the most used frequently "appliance" I have, wherever I am.

A few days ago I went to see my lawyer in Bay Ridge. I drove down 73rd or 74th Street between 5th and 6th Ave, which is comprised of the old yellow brick rowhouses with the bow front (Sunset Park and Ridgewood have a lot of them). Almost every house on the block was flying the flag. It was a nice sight.

Legion…one of my holdings…NVCIF

Neovasc Inc. (TSXV: NVC) today reported topline results for its COSIRA trial assessing the efficacy and safety of the Neovasc ReducerTM, a novel percutaneous device for the treatment of refractory angina. The data shows that the Reducer achieved its primary endpoint, significantly improving the symptoms and functioning of patients disabled by previously untreatable refractory angina. The COSIRA trial also confirmed that the Reducer is safe and well-tolerated, with no reports of device-related serious adverse events. The safety and efficacy data from the randomized, controlled COSIRA trial is consistent with results seen in previous non-randomized pilot studies of the Reducer.

Part- Mueser Rutledge were the engineers for the Bathtub. when they finally got down to bedrock, some of the tiebacks began leaking, making everyone worry that the river was going to burst through. Those guys were nothing short of amazing. Their security office was a couple of doors down from me when I lived in Bk Hgts. When the construction of the Bklyn law dormitory collapsed a building behind us, and threatened the foundations of my and neighboring buildings, Mueser Rutledge came in to help us. You are special! :)

Twitter IPO tomorrow. They raised the pricing from $21-25 to $27.

Difficult to say whether the shares will hold up above that price level when it trades. I'd rather buy it below that. That said, valuation at ~ $13B is nowhere near that of FB when it came but the revenue model is unclear (as it was with Fb when it went public)

Well, the millenial in the article works all the time (as a musician and occasional substitute teacher) and doesn't take any money from his parents at all.

But my favorite comment is this, and it captures perfectly what I see in a certain "friend" of mine, A, who I've discussed here before:

"Hmmm. As the child of working class parents who were loving and supportive but had limited ability to help their children financially, I am skeptical when I see the children of affluent parents rejecting the system that raised them. First, they are blissfully ignorant of what life can be like without a financial cushion. Second, don't they always know deep down that if they somehow really get in trouble, mom and dad will be there to help? My siblings and I buckled down in school, got practical jobs and built our own safety nets because otherwise there would be none."
November 6, 2013 3:42 PM - dibs
For the next 20 years, 10,000+ Americans will turn 65 EVERY DAY. I suspect this will put a huge strain on SS and within 10 years, even another Democratic administration will no longer be able to ignore this issue. Don't say you weren't warned. It's simple math and it doesn't work.
November 6, 2013 3:47 PM - DeadCatBounce
I seriously don't understand the liberal love for Social Security.
SS is a terribly regressive tax: Punishes the poor terribly and lets the rich off the hook completely.
November 6, 2013 3:49 PM - dibs
I'll be taking my SS in 7 years and spending most of it responsibly on wine and hustlers but the rest I'll probably waste.
November 6, 2013 3:50 PM - dibs
The whole basis for SS when it was first implemented is so far out of synch with reality today. Yes, it is a very regresive tax but it wasn't when first implemented.

I like her Monkey. Is that a Monkey on her shoulder? I had this neighbor once who used to look dirty all the time (and always knocking at the door at random hours asking for random stuff!)

Thanks, lp. I see now, it is "chalice from palace". I wonder why I thought "flagon with the dragon"? Man, it was a long time ago when I saw that movie...

Oh, I see. Later the chalice from the palace breaks, and they have to use the flagon with the dragon. Better Netflix it...

Nope. Same old, same old, Cobble. :o) Although no fighting, to speak of. Maybe everyone took Snappy's plea to heart?

"And cobble, where the hell have you been????"

I'm alive, CGar. Just barely. We'll catch up at some point, perhaps at Montero's.

It's been a little choppy, pepper. I'm extremely tired. But I am seeing some faint glimmers of light off in the distance. I've made some major changes with my elderly friends, and we're getting a LOT more help on many levels. I called in the reinforcements. The cavalry...in a manner of speaking. I'm still on high alert, but feeling somewhat hopeful this evening.

Thanks, pepper, I'll try to catch up...

One is still extremely ill and in the hospital, we're not out of the woods yet. But some pieces of the giant larger than lifesized puzzle are falling into place.

I know, Cobble! It was funny for me to read all that. dibs is an asshole, but he's OUR asshole, and we love him (usually, sort of ;o)). I was really feeling a "Nobody puts Baby in the corner" moment....

LOL! Yes! Usually, mostly, sort of, until he ges all 'handsy'! ; )

Yeah, the Choate thing was just an incorrect assumption... and dibs' handsiness is harmless, as far as I can tell, at least for us ladies...
November 6, 2013 11:37 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
My dad went to Choate, I was sure I would have remembered him saying he went there if he had.

Yes, but it's fun to say he gets 'handsy'. ; )

Hi bxgrl!

I know, I had to ask BnH what the hell everyone was going on about! Then he started explaining, and I didn't have the bandwidth to understand. : (
November 6, 2013 11:45 PM - pepper
Thus, the poll. I think dh had a huge "worlds colliding" moment today. As it stands, he has said that he is blogaciding until LIB content is private...
