I thought I stubbed my toe but in reality dislocated it. Went to hospital and they put it back in place but I thought I was about to pass out from the momentary pain when they did it.

Stubbed a toe about 6 weeks ago, it turned purple and black, had it x-rayed, not broken. It went back to normal in a week. So I thought. Entire toenail came off yesterday. Fascinating. Or gross, depending...:-)
#11
October 29, 2013 7:31 AM - rf
The toenail was already dead, just took a while for it to grow out enough (via the live toenail behind it) to fall off.

I have only lost one toenail while training for the marathon this year, which is less than I have lost due to running the previous two years.
I am being more careful about getting somewhat decent shoes and replacing them before they get too bad.

As of last night, the hospital had my grandfather somewhat stable, with the intention of making it where he is in less pain and giving him a little more time. He has pneumonia, and various organs are not functioning properly. No attempts are being made to treat the underlying conditions, only the symptoms.
No matter what happens this week, my mother and grandmother both want me to run the Marathon on Sunday. I am not sure what to do.

I'm gonna wait a few days and see how it goes. I can walk, just slowly.

I hate to agree with Dave but its absurd that people are losing their insurance. The only logical solution is they get a new plan that complies with aca standards for whatever they used to pay. Govt may have to subsidies the difference.

October 29, 2013 8:08 AM - Deleted

Yea, I think he would want me to run, and my family agrees.
If he does stabilize this week, I think I will go ahead and book a flight for me and my son for next weekend.
Everything is so uncertain right now, but all indications are the end is near.

obviously not just the liberal do-gooders who see the attitude shift in this country of late...and the real class warfare being waged:
from REPUBLICAN Gov. of Ohio---
“I’m concerned about the fact there seems to be a war on the poor,” he said, sitting at the head of a burnished table as members of his cabinet lingered after a meeting. “That if you’re poor, somehow you’re shiftless and lazy.”
“You know what?” he said. “The very people who complain ought to ask their grandparents if they worked at the W.P.A.”

Scott, I hope you can run. Family always comes first but it seems like they want you to run.

R and I went to Prospect on Fulton last night. I had heard about it but we just went on the spur of the moment last night. We had a "half a fried chicken". One order. Then another "Half a fried chicken". It must have been the puniest chicken on the block, because this wasn't what looked like a half a chicken. Anyway, it was delicious. Not greasy and very light crunchy breading, piece of corn bread, DELICIOUS collard greens (the star of the meal in my book), mac and cheese (really good too), and great cole slaw. They had two things on the menu -- the chicken and fried fish.

CGar, I am going to text you re doctor request.

I saw Mia Farrow in Heathrow. We were sitting in a little lobby for a BA flight to NY. My eyes flitted toward hers, not really trying to make eye contact, but it is kind of natural to make eye contact with people anyway but she sat like a stone statue, frozen sort of wearing this fierce non-expression which said "STAY THE FUCK AWAY". Ok fine.

Her son really looks like Frank, especially the crooked smile in the shot of him standing.

I never really liked Woody Allen films. Annie Hall was funny and the other all had their laughs, but it got a bit thin and after a while, you are sort of tired and creeped out by the self-referential, neurotic stream of bs. True about Manhattan, Slopey.

I grew up loving Woody Allen films, dona. I have not gone back to the early films since the Soon-Yi mess, but I haven;t liked anything he's done since, and I think that is at least in part because he sort of curdled in my mind. I am afraid to go back to the old films because I might find that what I used to find funny I will now find creepy.

My favorite, btw, is Broadway Danny Rose, followed by Zelig, then Annie Hall and Sleeper.

I liked Broadway Danny Rose a lot. The old NY agents in the back of the carnegie deli, trading stories. The weirdness of the Macy's balloons. Allen's deadpan commitment to his role as the schlemiel of an agent for forlorn novelty acts. He gets at a great slice of lost NY.

[Edited.]

Zelig might look dated now, since its technical accomplishments are a piece of cake in the digital age, but it was pretty impressive how he blended himself into ancient newsreel footage in a meditation on assimilation. He got so many of the atmospherics right.

"I can't even imagine how she could get over that betrayal."

I saw an old clip of Andre Previn's wife, Dory, on a talk show. She felt betrayed when Mia befriended her then took her husband. Dory may have had a nervous breakdown. She wrote a song about Mia, something like, "Beware of Young Girls Who Come to the Door". Then (the plot thickens) Mia and Previn married, adopted a girl and named her Soon-Yi Previn. Allen's wife says that her father is Andre Previn. What do you think of all of that mess?

Lots of great bit characters in Annie Hall. Paul Simon and his skanky arm candy was perfect.

In either Annie Hall or Manhattan (I forgot which, but what does it matter?) there is the Most Insufferable Scene of All Time, consisting of a cocktail party in Manhattan. The scene is a big, smug wet kiss to New York Liberals when they were at the height of their influence. The highlight of that scene was a speech by Bella Abzug.

I believe that is Manhattan, benson. All black and white and tweedy-textured. Annie Hall, of course, had Marshall McLuhan.

Incidentally, lots of old UWS liberals DO NOT like Bella. They have not forgiven her for the 1972 primary brawl against the incumbent congressman William Fitz Ryan, also very much an UWS liberal. (I've worked on both sides of that divide.) After her first term in the adjacent district she had been redistricted into what was largely his old district. He won the primary by a large margin and then died two months later (some Ryan die hards blame her for his death -- i.e. the agita of the campaign). His wife ran to succeeed him but Bella won that election.

Of course, now I need to repeat for benson's benefit the story about what Bella Abzug said about Italian men. This was on her 1986 comeback campaign for congress in Westchesterand we were trying to gently apprise her of the fact that she was not polling well enough with JEWish male democrats to defeat Joe Dioguardi (Kara's dad, btw). One never likes to give her bad news because of her temper.

Her response: I don't need YOU. To tell ME. That Jewish men think I'm going to CUT THEIR BALLS OFF. They're not like Italian men. Italian mothers raise them right. Italian men have BIG BALLS. They know I won't cut them off.

About a year or two ago I watched that Woodie Allen film called something like "Mimi (??) and her Sisters". on Channel 13. Not that good at all, but there is one interesting aspect: many scenes were shot on location in SOHO, when it was still a gritty, semi-industrial place in which artists could find cheap living space.

I have an engineer on my staff who has gone AWOL for three business days, and this is not the first time. I tried to reach him via e-mail and cell phone, but no luck. As he had foot surgery recently, I thought he might have had a medical or other personal emergency. I went to his public Facebook page, to discover that he's been busy there. Changed his background photo and posted a few messages.

He will be dismissed. I finally found a reason to like FaceBook.

Collectors on a major scale. Too much. Sort of like that house for sale in PLG with all the wallpaper and colors except this was mostly marble.

This was a marvel and a highlight. Though all granite and austere, the ceiling frescos and the art work collected was terrific. Called Philip's folly. The tombs were all carerra marble and there were over a hundred.

Stoops - Long story short. I'd had 6 operations for cancer w/o insurance. Went over a year in the clear & Blue X said I was covered as a recurring, not pre-existing condition. Had surgery & stayed in as long as docs wanted - when uninsured I'd left early, taking out my own i.v., catheter, etc. because I couldn't afford to stay in. Got home to a notice from Blue X saying they'd changed their minds. I told them I'd give them 10 days to reconsider & then I'd send out 100 pieces to media. In the end that's what I had to do. Got lots of coverage for picketing their operations & they eventually covered me. It was around 40 years ago.

NEWSFLASH!!!!!!!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen;

Benson News has been the first to present the situation with respect to the ObamaCare "rollout" (if that is what you want to call it). Yes, we informed you about the cancellations of the individual policies, and the glitches in the exchange website. Now, we are here to report the next problem to loom on the horizon.

Tonight, at dinner, I asked my daughter "So, did you find out which networks your doctor will be participants?" To Benson's shock, she replied: "They don't know yet." That's right folks, the situation is in such turmoil that her doctors don't yet know which plans they will be in - they are still trying to figure it out.

How the heck are people supposed to choose plans if they don't know which plans their doctors will participate in?

This news was brought to you by Benson News. All the Pearls of Wisdom fit to print.

Benson, I know you are enjoying this tremendously, as the first serious attempt at insuring a huge nation like the United States takes place, rolled out with a part of the population salivating over every mistake and every oversight. God forbid there should be errors, glitches, confusion, and even some stupidity.

But frankly, you can crow all you want. It will all get straightened out, and most people, probably including your daughter will be paying less for health insurance. And millions of us unisured will be able to get health insurance, thus enabling us to get preventative care, which will eventually lesson the cost of medical care for everyone. Yay and hooray! I can put up with all of the glitches, confusion, missteps and even rampant dumbness on the part of those who have been working for years to get this going. Of course it's more complicated than it needs to be - in order to get anything passed, the Act was made into Swiss Cheese with rewrites, and kissing up to the powerful insurance industry.

But hey, I'm going to have f'ing heath insurance for the first time in 7 years, and nothing you can make fun of, or mock, is going ruin that for me!

Wait. No I don't. Why would I tell myself I want a mink fur coat and then make a sad face about it? I had a similar experience in the supermarket tonight. I was in a tizzy getting ingredients to make a 5 layer Mexican dip for potluck tomorrow and was going to make tombstones and trees from cut up baked tortillas, etc, all out! In the past I've been kind of a potluck Nazi. I HAAAAATE when people make great dishes and then there's people who just pick up a box of cookies so they can join in. I HATED that. So all the ingredients are coming up to like 20 bux and im like da fuq am I doing? I can go out and eat a really nice lunch tomorrow with 20 bux! I spazz out in the kitchen anyway, cooking frustrates me. So I put everything back and said fuck it and picked up an entemann's pumpkin loaf and put it in my basket. So yeah, that's going to be my contribution, a fucking store bought pumpkin loaf, and I DON'T CARE! I don't even care that someone is already bringing in homemade pumpkin loaf most likely.

So it's like going into 4 weeks on this Wellbutrin stuff and daaaaamn, shit is giving me att-tit-tuuuuuude like I've never had before. It's not a nasty attitude or anything, it's more of a I am not going to fret about every little single thing and decision for really stupid stuff. A bit of confidence as well. I no longer automatically move to the side fully if someone is walking toward me (why do I always have to get out of the way?!), and I even bump and elbow people on the N train without giving a crap and can even look them in the eye. Okay mostly it's smelly and inbred looking third world passengers, but it's a start!

October 29, 2013 9:59 PM - petebklyn
I was about to stop at some shop on smith street earlier today bought saw some $$ customers walk in
October 29, 2013 10:05 PM - Partridge
You wouldn't scare them, Pete. Actually had very few of them today.
October 29, 2013 10:05 PM - pepper
I'm sure the shop keeper is disappointed you didn't stop in, pete... I bet said shopkeeper would love a visit from a sweet, handsome fellow such as yourself...
October 29, 2013 10:05 PM - Partridge
Exactly.
October 29, 2013 10:11 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Yes, Pete, a little stressful, all outside my control, but I can do my best to help. Have I mentioned I am not fond of ERs/hospitals? Fortunately, I had my friends actual nurse with me, who took the time to explain, more than the docs, to me what was happening.

Thank you all, good thoughts, wishes, prayers...whatever you've got, we'll take 'em.

this was probably about 12:30 or so......somehow in my mind I thought we were in november and today was election day so I was on bike and figured I swing by the school on Union/Hoyt where I'm supposed to vote....and then realized not until next week.....we haven't had halloween quite yet. Then over to Smith on way back home.

And who in their right mind wouldn't!

Keep Birdie company, would you...while I'm elsewhere. (But go easy on the pawing? ; ) )

I'm liking this for the Zestimate, not the asking. Pool looks photoshopped.

Yes, Pepper. Thanks for asking. The family drama dropped down a couple of notches when they all really needed it to. Some cussing at a deacon during the wake's prayer moments, but nothing too ugly.

The Catholic part of the wake and funeral was disappointing to most attendees.

cobble - sorry about your friend - sending good thoughts to them...and to you!

lp - do you have someone staying with you, on top of everything else?

Yes, Pete. Pool. If I go out there, I wanna pool!

Oh, I see what you mean now. Just the water on the left side is in a repeat pattern. Unusual for water, common in photoshop.
October 29, 2013 10:26 PM - Partridge
Not yet, Stoops, maybe not happening. (Thank heavens!) I need time to prepare for a roommate even if temporary. I am not spontaneous that way.

"Moving on to beach living talks."

You'll get far with that kind of sweet talk, BnH loves him some beach!

I think that repeat pattern is just a function of the printed vinyl liner. I've seen similar at the pool place I go to.

Yay! Pool parties with Pepper.
October 29, 2013 10:32 PM - petebklyn

arkady: I've never heard of so many operations! If you don't mind talking about it, I'd like to hear more the next time there's a PLUSA get-together.

Cobble, I am very sorry about your friend. I hope that he/she hangs in there and keeps fighting. I will say a prayer.

Kazoo, I don't know about the Previn connection, but yeah, Mia Farrow caused her share of trouble. It is just that I can't even process a husband/partner cheating on a woman with their adopted daughter. No I didn't think you meant me. :-)

Re firing people, I wrote about this here but I once had a hellacious time with a young man who reported to me. He was passive aggressive and a complete screwup. I suffered tremendously trying to address these issues, giving him "chances", discussing with HR, trying to buy this clown time with my own boss who had had it with this guy. In the end, she fired him but if it were now, I wouldn't hesitate a second to fire him. He caused everyone a huge amount of grief. He was an irresponsible, oleaginous, glad-handing jackass who used flattery and manipulation to get out of responsibilities over and over again. My wonderful brother in law who has a lot of people reporting to him told me nobody will respect you and love you more than your employees when you fire a bad employee. He was right.

Has Pete been adopted as the Official Male Mascot of the OT Ladies Evening Hour???'

Cobble - sorry to hear about your friend. I will remember her in my prayers.
October 29, 2013 11:02 PM - pepper
I get it, dona. I just don't think I could fit it into a sentence, given how I normally speak/write. love it that you can!
October 29, 2013 11:05 PM - petebklyn
as I left Y tonight -- I noticed the signage across atlantic....Pet Hospital next to Pediatric Care. Sometimes wonder if one of the same.

Randi: 7:55....CUTENESS! Squeezably delicious!
October 29, 2013 11:06 PM - pepper
Are you meaning "Mean Girls Male Mascot", benson? I'm not authorized to speak on behalf of the coven, but I'll take him! ;o)
October 29, 2013 11:08 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Thank you, benson, my friend is very fragile right now.
October 29, 2013 11:08 PM - Donatella

Maybe you can tell that I spent a lot of time trying to describe this guy, pepper. :-) DROVE ME NUTS. Yet I suffered about firing him. For some reason, I don't know. I was doing back flips being this super earnest, sincere manager trying to get him on the right path, when he was a con artist supreme. Oh well, you learn as you go along, I guess.
October 29, 2013 11:10 PM - pepper
Well, Pete, it's Pet Smart... Do they have a pet clinic there as well?

LP, I had a friend in HS, whose parents had a house on W. Tiana Rd, in Hampton Bays. You could do worse...
October 29, 2013 11:15 PM - Donatella

Did I ever mention going to an all night emergency animal clinic with my beloved Aldo? It was like Fellini movie with every imaginable type of character with their sick pets. I remember this guy with a bird. The bird had tendinitis of the claws or so the guy said and the bird kept falling off his perch.
October 29, 2013 11:15 PM - pepper
I applaud you for trying, Dona - that is a sign of a good manager, imho. But some people cannot be saved, despite all best efforts.
