Happy Birthday Etson and Randi!

"Almost 1 million Americans will be blowing out birthday candles today. Oct. 5 is the most common birthday in the United States, according to a survey conducted by AnyBirthday.com....

And why is Oct. 5 such a popular day for babiesí entering the world? One possible explanation is that the length of an average pregnancy is around 274 days. Counting backward, the date of conception for Oct. 5 babies would be New Yearís Eve."

I was surprised that Lowe's didn'thave brown tarps, only the ghastly blue and silver. Had to go to HD and they had them. Both places had Christmas stuff out already.

Can't seem to rid the vegetable garden of a horrendous weed situation so going to cover it for 2 years and see if that helps. Supposedly covering it with plastic heats the soil to the point of killing the weeds.

October 5, 2013 12:43 PM - dibs
Pete...do you own bond funds???? This year, with the selloff, not only are many funds down YTD but people will have capital gains to payt as well as those funds sold bonds to meet the massive redemptions, still more to come as rates rise further.

Could get to be as bad as 2000 when people bought stock funds in 1999 as the market went up but then it cratered and they lost monety and had to pay massive cap gains on top of losing money as the funds met redemptions and sold stocks that had been accumulated in the 1998/1998 runup

October 5, 2013 12:51 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
lol, pepper, are those pasties you posted????
October 5, 2013 12:53 PM - dibs
The funds have owned securities through the runup and many of them have moved up dramatically (gains). When investors flee, the funds have to meeet redemptions by selling those securities which generate cap gains and are reported to the shareholders. If they were the last ones in and the market is falling, not only have they lost money but they have to pay proportionate share of cap gains on the securites sold within the funds.

Fund managers should actively manage this but it's a catch 22.

"any significance for 'return of capital' instead of regular dividend? "
Return of capital lowers your cost basis, so you will pay more in capital gains tax when you sell. Assuming of course that you have a gain.

Can I just say...that packing and moving and unpacking are seriously tiring? It's not the physical energy as much as the mental energy of figuring out so many g'damn details for weeks on end. Im proud of myself. I gave back the keys to the cabinet in that AA meeting where I was making coffee. I didn't make up any excuses, just said I don't want to do that anymore, handed the key over, and left.

Only day 2 of the Wellbutrin and I already have this surge of confidence and assertiveness. Even at work yesterday, it was quite an amazing thing. The dust and grime outside of my room in the rest of the apartment doesn't even irk me now like it normally does. I can sort of wander through the rest of the apartment and not obsess over it. I stopped bothering to clean in the rest of the apartment a LONG time ago. I only keep my room clean. I clean the bathroom about the same amount as my roommate though. The kitchen I clean up after my messes, but I don't really use the rest of the apartment anyway and there's too much dirt and grime and it builds up too fast or something.

I'm slowly (or fast) learning that there are things in life that are NOT MY PROBLEM.

Is quitting smoking why you're taking the Wellbutrin? Or are you taking it for the anti-d properties? And have you gained weight since that time I met you? If not, you are quite trim already...
October 5, 2013 8:05 PM - Deleted
I'm always around 170. 5'9". It's a bit on the heavy side. Stopping drinking did NOT help me lose any weight (but that wasn't really the point anyway). Nor did it help save me ANY money (tho that wasn't really the point of it either). My liver tests had some number like 400 something in the red danger zone and now they are about 25 which is normal. My doctor showed me on the computer last week. Not sure what those numbers mean but it went from really really bad to good. I just want to keep it there. No alcohol for me. Ever.

The wellbutrin im taking for both the smoking cessation cause and to see how it affects my brain and behavior. I really didn't want to mess with my brain chemistry at first, but I figure eh what the hell. It's also sometimes used for people with ADHD when doctors are chary that their patients will abuse adderal and stuff. Sometimes I think I have adult onset of that, but not sure. I don't think I'm depressed though, but I have extremely low levels of self-esteem matched with an extremely inflated ego of the ridiculous kind, that normal methods of therapy will not help (well moreso because I don't want to have to deal with doing those kinds of things). My views on life are bizarre and borderline antisocial at times, but im harmless to myself and others. I just need to channel all my resources (the ones I can be asked to care about anyway) to do what is numero uno in life... make shitloads of money.

October 5, 2013 8:09 PM - Deleted
oh for FUCKS sake I just wrote out a HUGE answer to pepper's question and drew a blank. Sorry, pepper!

I'll make it short.

I have always hovered around 170 pounds for a very long time.

Wellbutrin is for quitting smoking and to work on my brain.

I am not depressed but have extremely low self-esteem matched with an inflated bizarre ego and views on life that could be considered antisocial but I am harmless to myself and others.

I want to channel all of the resources possible (that don't make barf) that will get me closer to numero uno in life.. and that's making shitloads of money.

Good luck to you rob, you are on quite the path to self-improvement!

I don't like to offer too much super personal advice on here, especially unsolicited, but are you sure you don't want to talk to someone, in addition to the meds, about working on your brain?
October 5, 2013 8:59 PM - rf
Losing 25-30 lbs. sounds like a lot for a guy your height, Rob. I know you are worried about gaining weight if you quit smoking but you don't want to hurt yourself.

October 5, 2013 10:36 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Yes, multiple flavors, and OTC if you can prove you're over 21. Turns out, after using cinnamon for awhile, the fruit chill is actually better. Who knew? Sounds gross, but it's better than the cinnamon to me. The cinnamon kind of burns out your taste buds. They both have a taste that someone new to the gum might not like, but after awhile one gets to like since it kills the craving.

That sounds great cobble. I wish high school girls partied in a yard behind my apartment. :( Okay that sounded way creepier than I meant it to. Has anyone ever used the walk in urgent care clinic on 5th avenue in park slope on 8th street or something? I am going there for my horrible cough. I cant stop coughing and if I keep coughing at work tomorrow im going to get in trouble. It's already caused "problems" for me. Which is why I went to the doctor last week in the first place, but wound up on wellbutrin. This happens all the time. Going to the doctor for one thing, winding up leaving for something completely else. My horrible cough and chest cold wasn't exactly addressed. Although he did say that they could give me a chest xray if I wanted, but he sorta downplayed it and was like I guess it's not necessary and he seemed to agree. Ive been coughing so hard and long that the muscle in my stomach literally hurt. Nothing comes up when I cough, it's a dry cough but comes from the chest area. No sore throat or anything. Last night I felt sick again like I was coming off some horrible drug or something, not sure how to describe it.

Anyway, how long do you think ill have to sit in the walk in clinic? I have all day I guess not in a huge hurry or anything. Im just afraid to mix decongestant with the wellbutrin as it lowers the seizure threshold and it says not to take cold medications in the warnings.

Miley was really good on SNL last night, tho in her second musical performance I noticed her feet. She was wearing Nike shower shoes :-/

October 6, 2013 9:08 AM - Arkady
rob - It sounds like what I've had. Try Max Strength Mucinex Expectorant (one tablet twice a day) but it'll take a day or two to kick in. For the cough I was given a codeine med that does work well but gives me the wobblies so I try to avoid it - Hall's cough drops were pretty effective instead.
October 6, 2013 9:11 AM - Deleted
Should I just do that and not bother going to the clinic? Are there any duane reads around here? Im only worried about mixing those with the wellbutrin which is ill advised apparently.

Mucinex wouldn't be affected by WB or vice versa. There's a DR at 7th Av. & Flatbush but there's a RiteAid on 7th & 6th St & another at 5th Av. & 10th St.

Wellbutrin XL? Yes. Mucinex is normally taken twice daily and with plenty of water throughout the day. Take Wellbutrin XL at the same time each day.

I wish there was a drug store right here where I live. 45 bread knot bars and restaurants but no drug store. GRRRR

You do not understand me Randi at all. And I don't know if I enjoy being miserable. Not even sure if I am miserable.? I am however totally miserable 9-530 Monday through Friday though, and it's taken a LOT to finally admit that to myself and be open about it. I need to figure what it is I want to do career wise and it's driving me bananas because i'm coming up blank. All I know is that I do not want to work in an office anymore, and I don't want to be around married straight people with or without kids in their 30s and 40s. Im sorry if that sounds harsh, ageist, heterosexist, and anti-family, but I just can't stand being around that demographic. I used to work with lots of young people and gays but over the years the place I work at has changed drastically and now skews towards older people with families and kids. It makes me miserable being around people like that and I can totally sense their total disdain for me and my ways. It's like I put up pictures of all my fish with their names in my cubicle and it's some sort of mockery against people who put up pics of their family? gtfoh.

Went to see an interesting musical performance at BAM last night: "Edge of Heaven". Apparently in 1930's and 40's Shanghai, a musical genre evolved that was part Western, part Chinese, due to the presence of a lot of Western musicians living there. A musician (Gary Lucas) heard some records of it when he was a kid living in China, and has made it his life's work to showcase it. It was interesting. Unfortunately (once again) last night was the final show.

Before the show we went to Stonehome restaurant in Ft. Greene, where I finally tasted the hallowed kale. I liked it.

One more comment regarding the show: are there no showman/producers these days who make sure that all the details are "put together", as my beautician sister would say?

In particular: they made an attempt to evoke a 1930's Shanghai nightclub where this music would be sung. Nightclub tables were set up in front of the stage. All but one of the band members had jackets and fedoras on. The two women lead singers were dressed in beautiful evening dresses exactly as you would see in the 30's, and they carried themselves perfectly. Right behind them was the drummer, who wore a sleeveless floral print shirt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It looked like he borrowed his wife's blouse, and it totally detracted from the women and the whole visual effect. If I were the producer of that show, I would have told him to run out and get something proper to wear.

How could a professional film editor possibly make the above statement?
You don't know film history?
Hawkes, Ford, Welles, Hitchcock?
Or even earlier, like Chaplin or Keaton?
Eisenstein practically invented film editing.
Anyway, Preston Sturges made very socially progressive movies, that happened also to be brilliant, so I thought you might like Sullivans Travels.

Watch the plants shut down and move....

U.S. Senator Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican, has warned it would be one of Volkswagen AG's (VOW3.DE) "biggest mistakes" to allow the United Auto Workers to represent workers at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant.
In its Monday edition, German business newspaper Handelsblatt quoted Corker as saying that while VW may be working successfully with other unions across the globe, the UAW would be the wrong partner.
"I think they are being very naÔve to think that they can bring the German model, embrace the UAW and think it's going to be productive," Corker told the paper.
The senator has come out against any UAW influence over car plants in the South because he gives the union part of the blame for the demise of Detroit as the heart of U.S. auto production.
The UAW would like Volkswagen to voluntarily recognize the U.S. union as the best choice to represent the German automaker's workers at its Tennessee plant as it would give it toehold in organizing foreign-owned automakers in the U.S. South.
Volkswagen labor leaders and workers at the Tennessee plant are to meet this month to discuss the possibility of the UAW union representing them.
A win at VW would mark the UAW's first success at a major foreign automaker's plant in the conservative South.
That could alter the landscape in the U.S. auto sector, opening door to similar efforts at plants owned by Germany's Mercedes in Alabama and BMW (BMW.DE) in South Carolina, and possibly those owned by Japanese and South Korean automakers, analysts have said.

Of all the dumb articles about Dubai, this is one of the dumbest:

"What is special about the Burj is the uncompromising attention to lifestyle. As we enter the lobby we are greeted with a calm-invoking aroma. Our posture shifts as we relax and breathe in the air of refinement. The nightclubs and restaurants in the Burjís Armani Hotel attract a high-fashion international set with intriguing energy."
October 6, 2013 5:03 PM - pepper

Why is the UAW such a bad pick? German unions wield incredible power (I venture to say, more than here, but that's just my sense), and the car makers do just fine.
October 6, 2013 5:08 PM - RowerChick
Ethan Hawke really? I've seen Maggie (I can't spell her last name) a couple of times carrying her baby. But that's it for Boerum Hill. Scott & I saw Usher last night @ a fundraiser in the Gowanus.
October 6, 2013 5:13 PM - DeadCatBounce
I'm with Pepper on this one.
Why should a Senator come between a free enterprise deal between a Corporation and it' s employees?
Let the market decide.
I also think it is ridiculous to blame the UAW for the big three automakers problems.
These car makers had one of the biggest competitive advantages in all history, and they blew it with backwards ideas like planned obsolescence. They were mismanaged for years by fat cat bureaucrats who contributed nothing.
Detroit even resisted fuel efficiency!
If they made bad deals regarding workers pension funds, that is still the fault of poor management, not the unions.

Regarding UAW:

-I agree that it is none of Sen. Corker's business.

-I agree that Detroit's management was poor.

-having said that, the UAW is among the worst of the industrial unions, and was also a big factor in Detroit's decline. Totally resistant to innovation. Read the history of how they tried to block all the innovations in processes at GM's Saturn division.

I organized my books this afternoon, BnH has done most of his, except the giant shelves of engineering books. They have their own custom made by BnH bookcase, but it needs to secured first, lest it fall and kill someone!

October 6, 2013 7:32 PM - Deleted

Lol Miami is filled with vapid fuckfaces.
October 6, 2013 7:38 PM - Cobble B. Hiller

October 6, 2013 7:39 PM - petebklyn

So start looking at Florida. Ft. Lauderdale seems to have a great gay community. Do your research, make it a project. Find some local blog or forum to chat with huemons on.

OOOOOOOOOOOOH! just saw a commercial for ancestarydna.com where you send in your DNA and they hook you up across the globe with ancestors and family members you never knew you had. (how do they do that?). Maybe I should order the kit, see who's im related to and "visit" them.

You might be surprised, but I respect that.

Actually that's not really true, but it does seem like there's an awful lot of that awful castrated voice thing going on with males around here.

Most of the people I met the few times I've been to Florida are older than Pete.
And they drive like Mr. Magoo.
October 6, 2013 8:02 PM - pepper
They are open until 8, Part - we could go some Sunday early evening, after you close up shop...
October 6, 2013 8:05 PM - pepper
True, DCB, it is definitely skewed towards older folk. But my cousins are my age and were born there, so I've met some of the younger folk as well; they do exist!
October 6, 2013 8:05 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
It was fantastic, pepper, I'm 'sold' on the place. All very well done, relaxed. i think I tip well, especially for 'personal' services. I'll go back - love Sundays at salons. Next up is getting my hair colored. The grey has taken over....must 'stem the tide'.

October 6, 2013 8:33 PM - Partridge
No, Snaps. He might have found something better suited elsewhere. Today was Lesbian Day. Sundays often are. I would have called you but they were all attached nesters.

Speaking of chickens, I roasted a chicken this evening with some rosemary from a friend's garden. Delicious!

We're watching 'Almost Famous'. BnH is feeling a little nostalgic...he would have been 17. I would only revisit that age iif I could take the knowledge I have now. But i'd love to have my 17 yr old thighs back! ; )

October 6, 2013 9:29 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Yep, leftovers in the fridge! Better hurry...will be gone after dinner tomorrow!

Btw, DoBH gave us a small box of chocolates from La Maison du Chocolat. Insanely decadent and rather extravagant for a 24 yr. Old, but I'm not complaining!
October 6, 2013 9:32 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
what a good egg! you guys eat that for dinner tomorrow and i'll have the chicken. kthanx!

"A worker in a Swedish warehouse is recovering after being crushed beneath more than a half-ton of falling bacon. We never expected the Greatest of Pork Products would betray someone like that, but it did: Somehow countless packages of the breakfast (and lunch and dinner) food shifted, causing a trolley carrying them to flip over onto the man. "I've never heard of anything like this," a police spokesman told The Local. "It's a rather unusual accident, you might say." The man wasn't forced to eat his way out of the bacon pile, but was instead pulled free and transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for minor back injuries. We're relieved he's OK, but we're sending our resumes just in case they need some extra workers in this magical-sounding bacon warehouse."

There are mosquitoes in our apt. I've decided Mother Nature is out to get me.

BnH just put on 'The Commitments'. I think he's relaxing, finally.
October 6, 2013 10:00 PM - pepper
Cobble, you and Dona should compare notes re Mother Nature... ;O)

No doubt, pepper. I actually heard some rustling in the ceiling last night, and thought of dona and the squirrels!
October 6, 2013 10:14 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
BnH has diagnosed the pain in my ankle as being 'twisted'. We've been so busy I can't quite recall when I twisted it. Maybe on the walk home from dinner Friday night? In any case, it's not debilitating, but it is very annoying.
