The place I was at last night was the sort of place that makes people either love or hate New York:

By combining an unusual mixture of sport, design and entertainment, SPiN New York has created a unique day and nighttime venue with 17 ping-pong courts, a full bar, restaurant, pro-shop and private VIP room.

At least I was not paying.

uH-oh! Cobble, you sure you want to move?

From the parkslopeparents facebook page:

This from the 76th Precinct regarding an incident at Carroll Park (our sister neighborhood):

Carroll Park Incidents
On Monday, September 16, 2013, at approximately 3:30 PM, a group of teenagers were engaged in a fight that spilled into Carroll Park.

Later on that same evening, at approximately 7:50 PM, several gunshots were reported in the vicinity of Carroll Park. No one was injured and no property damage was reported. Although it has not been confirmed that the two incidents are connected, every possibility is being looked into. Both incidents are being aggressively investigated.

Please be assured that extra Uniformed Patrol and Plain Clothes Patrol has been added to Carroll Park and the vicinity in the attempt to prevent any additional incidents from occurring.

Anyone with information regarding either incident should call the 76th Precinct Detective Unit at (718) 834-3221.

I saw them lined up outside the Verizon store at Atlantic Center. But the store was open and it didn't look like the wait was too long.

Democratic mayoral hopeful Bill DiBlasio said today that one of the first things he’ll do if elected would be to fire Brooklyn Heights resident/TLC commissioner David Yassky.

Capital New York: “Well, I’d start by getting a new chairman for the Taxi and Limousine Commission,” said de Blasio, the Democratic nominee for mayor, speaking to WWRL radio show host Mark Riley this morning. “The guy who’s there now, David Yassky, is someone who I’ve regularly disagreed with. And I want someone who will work with the drivers.”

Conspiracy theorists and/or those paying attention will note, as CNY does in its piece, that Yassky has had a good relationship with the Taxi Workers Alliance during his tenure.

As for DiBlasio:

Capital New York: “A review of all contributions to de Blasio raised by or made by taxi lawyers, owners and other associates in the 2013 campaign tallies $254,451, making them de Blasio’s biggest backers by far,” reported Wayne Barrett in the Daily News earlier this month. “Fleet owner Ron Sherman is the most powerful taxi leader, just as his father Donald was in the 1980s before he was convicted in a federal felony case, and he orchestrated the de Blasio deluge of support.”

Restaurant recommendation:
Went to dinner in LIC last weekend.
Pan Asian cuisine at a place called Shi.
Yelp reviews were all over the place good and bad but the view is particularly nice,
similar to Water's Edge.

Two highlights were the deconstructed ceviche with yellowtail and salmon (very subtle flavors, not overly acidic) and the Thai Curry Duck which had the familiar coconut flavored sauce but a surprisingly strong hot pepper kick which I enjoy but other's might not.
Decent wine list but I've been taking the shortcut recently and just ordered a bottle of California Sparkling which was perfect.

NH to all of the following. Have to get a replacement rod for the towel bar in the shower. The ceramic handles are already there, so I need a spring-loaded rod to fit it in. Unfortunately the handles are 21" apart - it's hard to find a 21" rod (18" and 30", no problem). The ones I find online have very little information:

Yeah, I actually bought one like that from Home Depot. I had forgotten I needed a towel bar until I was there, and had forgotten to measure beforehand. I could ask the super to cut it to size...or maybe the people at the hardware store on Newkirk. I wonder if 21" used to be the normal size.

I totally had to look that word up. (this is why I did not do as well as I thought I would on the verbal sections of the GRE's and SATs!) I thought it meant chary or something. Or jejune and puerile I guess. I'll take auspicious.

I learned a new spanish expression recently "Cada loco con su tema". Each crazy person with his theme.

On that note, let me add an anecdote from a professional bike messenger (7 years) with whom I had the pleasure of speaking yesterday. We were in agreement on EVERYTHING. That bike lanes made biking more dangerous, that they provided the "illusion" of safety, that they assumed a perfect world -- a perfect world without commercial deliveries (in the bike lane), without construction (in the bike lane), without drivers legally parking their cars (crossing the bike lane), without police cars parked (in the bike lane), without double parking (in the bike lane), etc. etc. etc.

And he decried the armies of amateurs who were in pathetic physical shape, couldn't turn their heads to fully take in their surroundings, no "spacial awareness" as he put it, lack of respect for traffic rules, low cycling skills, poorly fitting bikes, etc. etc. etc. He said that he thought that bike lanes actually made biking more dangerous by providing the illusion of safety.

BRAVO!!!!

Correctamundo, my friend!!!

Spent the day with my old friend from childhood -we finally did the trip to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens we had planned a few weeks ago, interrupted by rain.

It was great. It is so good to just unload all your stories and complaints and rants. Plus there are very few people on earth upon whom you would dare to chronicle all your physical "things", stories of the doctor appointments, test results, complaints, consumer outrages, etc.

I feel cleansed. Plus it was beautiful walking around today.

Am I the only one out there who feels that the LAST group of people's opinion I would value regarding street safety is bike messengers?? They are among the most obnoxious users of the street out there, and half of them strike me as thuggish.

I don't mind bike messengers, they are legit and serve a purpose. They get shit where it needs to get fast. Corny bread knots leisurely peddling around in busy and crowded soho in flip flops are 10000 x worse. Pedestrians and cars are just as bad too. I literally can't take working in SoHo anymore, it truly hurts my brain. As does my paper-pushing office monkey job. So mind-numbing, meaningless, and tedious that I want to cry sometimes that I was so drunk for so long that I am now dependent on a paycheck from there to survive and a complete lack of understanding what I want to do with the rest of my life nor possessing the skills needed to attain the first steps of that :-/

Hello, sobriety!

Dinner at Castello Plan. Good, but their limited menu and being out of a couple things was a less than auspicious beginning to the evening. (There, rob, I used it in another sentence.) I still think it's the best restaurant in the neighborhood, I'm still looking forward to more options in BH/CH/CG.

Cobble, I have received about 3/4 of the vintage pieces I am buying up for the store. Maybe there is something special for MofBH in the group. Bought, but have not received some of the crazy glass necklaces with the birds/fruit/and other stuff. Check with me later next week for best selection. I spent the day pricing a million of them and an Aussie woman bought 2 out from under me. They will be popular. I set up a new little section of the store for them.

I liked when one of the speakers said it took her YEARS to get the chip off her shoulder living around people who's parents pay their rent (she really said that) hahaha. Tho years is a long time... And im thinking how half the people in the room were probably trust funders... Lots of them in the park slope meetings, and they freely admit it a lot. Other peoples money doesn't seem to bother me all that much.. All they have to do is open their mouths and have funky teefs or dress like poop on a stick and i'm like oh boy trust funds wind up just getting wasted for a lot of people anyway and even if I had a trust fund would I have it now? highly doubtful, i'd probably be DEAD.

Consumer commentary from shopping West of Hanson Pl.

MAC in the Fulton St. Mall - Worst customer service ever. "you do NOT want that foundation, sweetheart" from a 25 year old woman.

Target in the Fulton St. Mall - Very nice customer service. Very helpful people.

RollX Deli - Fulton just west of Hanson.

"Hi Mommy" (Excuse me, but I can handle "Mommy" from Dominicans and Puerto Ricans but not men of Middle Eastern origin.) Then he tells me that the milk is 3.00 a half gallon. It's very expensive over here, Mommy.

I cannot believe that 4 blocks west (redacted) of me, it is so cool, so hip and happening that the bodegas charge 20% more for milk.

September 20, 2013 10:26 PM - Donatella
Ok, that's it for complaining.

It was a gorgeous day today. I had such a nice time. Got taken out for my b/d by my friend (birthday is next week) and then went to the BBG, talking up a storm with my pal. Spent last night up in Washington Heights. R cooked again and we watched Lust for Life, a really fabulous movie about Vincent Van Gogh with Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh and Anthony Quinn as Gaugin. Anthony Quinn won an Oscar for that. I love this time of year and I just love this weather.
September 20, 2013 10:30 PM - Donatella
Yeah, pepper, you are right. Mami is definitely what I was called.

R calls little boys Papi or Papita and little girls Mamita. It is cute and warm in Spanish but doesn't translate so well to English. Definitely not by a Middle Eastern young man at a bodega cash register to me. "Wut?"

No rf, I decided to buy milk on my way home from the Fulton Mall, so stopped in this little bodega 4 blocks west of where I live. The prices on the little Fulton strip between South Portland and Hanson are much higher than east of me.

The Latinos from the Islands use Papi, Papita, Mami and Mamita as endearments for other adults and kids too. It is meant to be affectionate and sweet and it comes out that way. The Middle Eastern bodega guys are pushing the envelope with Mami. I guess none of this really makes sense. I guess I don't like to be called Mami by anybody really. Rob, that's pretty weird getting called Mami by your grandmother. I wouldn't like to be called Papi either.
