I remember that show thinking those people were OLD.

And they were.

But now everyone thinks they can act and look as jejune and puerile as they want.

But they cant.

I was having dinner with an Asian guy I was screwing many years ago. He was telling me all about his boyfriend. When he stopped, I told him his boyfriend will never change. He's a Scorpio. He was amazed that I was right.

Then he asked me if I knew what he was. I said that despite what he was wearing (all black...Taurus' love brown) that he was a Taurus and I was right again.

The Middle East has come to the conclusion that the US can no longer be looked for to take any sort of leadership role when things go bad.

Consider this: There are over 2 MILLION Syrian refugees of which over 1 MILLION are children. They are flooding into Lebanon and Jordan and now Jordan too is on the verge of instability.

Those 1 MILLION children are not going to hold any love for the US in their hearts and minds, will not look kindly on the US and will grow up to be terrorists!!

August 28, 2013 10:38 AM - Deleted
"What was perhaps most embarrassing about Miley Cyrus’ dismal gig was its cutesy toys — a giant teddy bear from which she popped to cavort with a dance troupe in fuzzy bear drag. Intended to satirize her Disney past, it signaled instead the childishness of Cyrus’ notion of sexuality, which has become simply a cartoonish gimmick to disguise a lack of professional focus. Sex isn’t just exposed flesh and crude gestures. The greatest performers, like Madonna in a canonical video such as “Vogue,” know how to use suggestion and mystery to project the magic of sexual allure. Miley, go back to school!"

miley is part of a generation raised with easy access to hardcore porn and it has really warped their view of sex and sexuality. the fact that most teens think you finish a sex act by pulling out and going for the money shot (they do!) is just so fucked up. BUT, i would perhaps speculate this is part of the reason teen pregnancy rates have declined. DISCUSS!

August 28, 2013 10:56 AM - Deleted
from CDC website

In 2011, a total of 329,797 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a live birth rate of 31.3 per 1,000 women in this age group.1 This is a record low for U.S. teens in this age group, and a drop of 8% from 2010. Birth rates fell 11% for women aged 15–17 years, and 7% for women aged 18–19 years. While reasons for the declines are not clear, teens seem to be less sexually active, and more of those who are sexually active seem to be using birth control than in previous years.

Pop culture has always been about theft. Benny Goodman stole from Fletcher Henderson. Presley stole from, well, not just Big Mama Thornton but R&B in general. Beatles sprinked a bit of old mjusic hall tradition into essentially a Chuck Berry oeurve, Stones stole from blues guys. Joplin stole from blues women. Byrds stole their hair from the Beatles. Dylan stole his name from a poet, his music from Woody Guthrie and "a coat he borrowed from James Dean." James Brown took soul (and gospel-style preaching) and re-borrowed traditional African methods of layering interlocking rhythms. And then everyone stole from him. Fela stole from James Brown and took it back to Africa hardcore. Springsteen borrowed just about everything there was that was good in rock and roll through 1965 and put it in a blender. The Band stole their look from Andersonville prisoners of war. The Osmonds stole their number, ages and sound from the Jackson 5, but not the hair. Robin Thicke stole from Marvin Gaye, whether a court agrees ultimately or not. The Sex Pistons and Clash stole from the Ramones (the Ramones played that fast first). And yes, Madonna stole from Dietrich, Fosse, a bunch of other stuff. Lauper stole from Madonna.

It's what you do with it after you steal it that determines whether you are a great pop artist or just a cheap imitation.

Teen girls know exactly how they get pregnant and how to prevent getting pregnant.

I think they are smarter about having sex and birth control because they also know about HIV. Boys too. And the parents of both are, I think, a little more realistic about the possibilities of their baby girls and boys having sex and suffering consequences.

Not everyone of course, but in general not as hypocritical about the whole issue.

Delepp, I appreciate a good, effective political ad (print, video, digital, etc.), no matter who does it. Goes back to the days I worked on campaigns. Now, with microtargeting, we are treated to really high quality, opinion-shifting ads, far less often. There's tons of poorly-written, cheaply-crafted junk out there.

The Reagan '84 reelection campaign was perhaps the most finely-crafted, produced and messaged general consumption political ad campaigns ever. it had a clear theme, slogan and every ad was on-message to the point of reinforcing theme and slogan, and operated on multiple levels effectively.

Liberal political strategists I knew back in the late 80s and early 90s would teach it as a model of effective messaging that one can learn from whether putting together a multi-million dollar senate campaign or a five figure campaign for county legislator somewhere in the burbs, and whatever the political perspective of the candidate. Theme-slogan-messages. Keep them coherent, consistent, and mutually-reinforcing, and they should define the playing field on which the candidates compete in the most advantageous way.

Obama reelection campaign may have created an entirely new paradigm of what a modern political ad campaign needs to do to be effective. But the overall effect of the messaging is far less memorable because the messaging is multifaceted and micro-targeted. Far more a marketing and communications strategy than an ad campaign. And, of course, far less of the country is in play, now, so ads rarely bubble up to national consciousness.

One of my oldest and closest friends has 3 teenage sons. Sophomore and freshman in college and youngest a senior in HS. She is somewhat mortified by the sexual experiences of hers sons and their friends. She reports that none of them are interested in traditional relationships. No boyfriends and girlfriends. Eva, one night last spring my kid got a Facebook message from a girl using a computer at from the 24-hour apple store in midtown who wanted to know if she could stay with us or otherwise she would sleep on the subway. I said she could come over but we'd need to call her parents. She arrived here very, very late (like 2 a.m., got lost on subway) and I was half asleep so we didn't call, but I took them both to school in the morning and watched her walk in and I knew the school would call her parents. But the parents already know she's a troubled kid.

At this age, the parents already know.

My kid had told her to use the services available at school but she said she didn't want to. Not sure what's going on with her right now but my kid said she was on the street on and off.

My friend says that she is more shocked by the girls. The boys you kinda expect to be dogs but hope the girls are not as free and loose. I think this trend for casual sex among adolescence is too strong for many to fight against. They are not "the bad girls". They are just the girls. Many are not prepared for the psychological ramifications that this behavior leads to.

August 28, 2013 1:22 PM - BoerumHillScott
In many traditions, monogamy is about ownership rights and making sure the when the woman you own/support has kids, those kids have your genetic material.

Modern humans elevate sex to a much higher level than it needs to be due to old cultural and medical limitations .
I don't see that lasting more than a couple more generations in the "free world"

I think monogamy works for millions of people and for million of people it doesn't. It's a choice. But whether or not we've evolved past it, dh? Maybe biologically but considering the problems of not being monogamous- think pre nups, for instance- the social and economic complications give monogamy and advantage- even if monogamy is only a piece of paper.

Monogamy and polygamy were about ownership rights. In a polygamous society you owned more women, you had more dowry money, more kids, more stuff. It made you rich and powerful. You got more of your own genetic material out there. Societies developed one way or another based on many reasons- location, access to resources, type of society, population density, social sophistication etc. there is not simple answer. (Sorry- that damn anthropology degree again.)

Family size shrunk and the world got scarier. When kids are very little they stay at home and play with their siblings, older ones get to go out and play will friends on their block. Now, fewer siblings, rougher streets and mommy and daddy both working. Nannies take kids to other nannies for the kids to socialize. Playdate!
Edited at August 28, 2013 1:59 PM
August 28, 2013 2:05 PM - bxgrl
I think that's true for families with resources for that, but the majority of families don't do playdates, I'm thinking. If anyhting families have become more controlling and micromanaging. I always wonder if the sheer mass of information we get from the internet hasn't had an effect. at this point we are so fearful (omg- broccoli can kill!), that we've begun trying to control every aspect of our lives.

I mean- what does a remote controlled toilet seat cover say about us as a society? :)

My daughter decided who she wanted to play with, her "nanny" got the day off.
August 28, 2013 2:07 PM - BoerumHillScott
Few reasons behind grown in play dates :
1) What Partridge mentioned, alough in reality the streets are not rougher, but the perception is there that they are.
2) Parents and kids both have more going on, especially the mothers. More scheduling is needed to find a time when everyone is free.
3) Activities that did not have any formal name before are now lumped in the category of "play date"
August 28, 2013 2:10 PM - BoerumHillScott
Regarding parents aranging stuff for their kids, I have already seen my 12 year old take greater control of his social calendar.
Now that everyone has a phone starting in middle school, and most NYC kids walk or take the transit home starting then, it is much easier for him then it was for me growing up a car culture.

My kid went to elementary school in Chinatown so it was necessary to arrange something for her to see kids from school apart from school (and afterschool) hours. She did "call on" kids on our block in Clinton Hill, just like I used to do--go over and ring the doorbell.

But for sure parents are much more fearful of their kids walking alone in the street, waiting alone for the school bus, etc. In the suburbs, although most of the kids are eligible to take the bus, many more are driven and dropped off, making it necessary to have a gigantic plan for traffic control in the morning and in the afternoon.

The consensus on the OT is that monogamy is about "ownership"?

LOL,
This shows a stunning lack of understanding of both evolution and historical gender roles.

You folks do realize the vanity that must be involved in coming to this determination don't you?
Put in other words, the movement away from monogamy and marriage is directly proportional to our societal prosperity.
Take away prosperity and you take away all the gains made in making individuals independent from each other.
The argument that monogamy is directly related to ownership also belies the notion that we live in a society which is divided by a "huge" gap in wealth.
If the "poor" were truly "poor" in the United States, they would not be going it alone. This is just pure economics.

Let's avoid the whole giant OT blow out by answering this simple question:
"how much of human behavior is an extension of instinct and genetics?"

August 28, 2013 3:40 PM - bxgrl
No legion- actually that wasn't. But if you are talking about historical gender roles, it most certainly can be argued that marriage itself was about ownership (and power). Just look at inheritance laws in Victorian England, for example. as for the rest of your argument....whut? In medieval times the idea of romantic love became popular but historically, marriage was about ownership and property. Polygamy was about power through the ownership of property. Property gotten via marriage. But monogamy, like the division of labor in early societies, was about surviving. And survival depended on providing resources to your family in and most efficient way. And passing on your genes.
August 28, 2013 3:41 PM - bxgrl
*rolling my eyes* uh-oh, we're in for another Benghazi-Boston marathon-Ft. Hood shooter rant.
August 28, 2013 3:43 PM - BoerumHillScott
On the question of human behavior, I think that through most of history there has been a huge gap between individual behavior and behavior approved by society.
There could even be an argument made that a key function of society was to protect the group as a whole from behaviors driven by instincts and genetics.

I think monogamy is an example of this. From the earliest writings, it is clear that humans often drift away from monogamy. However, for most societies to function well over time having stable family units with clear property and inheritance rights was critical, therefore the societal imposition of monogamy.

I do agree that the vast majority of the poor of the United States are by no means poor when judged against historical standards. This is somewhat due to technology, but much more so due to the width of safety net programs.

August 28, 2013 3:44 PM - Legion
bxgrl,
you appear to be contradicting yourself,
the first part of your paragraph states that marriage is about ownership.
The second part of your paragraph states that "...monogamy, like the division of labor in early societies, was about surviving.". That's what my argument is.

Arguing from medieval Europe (800 years ago) seems to miss the other 99,000 years of human history and survival.

August 28, 2013 3:52 PM - Legion
scott,
you need only look into the science of evolutionary biology to understand that there are two strategies for survival of species:
K strategy and r strategy.

One is all about the numbers, shoot a bunch of sperm on the eggs and move on. Easy peasy, nice and easy like a fish.
The other is all about investing in the individual survival towards a more certain genetic outcome, therefore the time involved in staying close to the mate as most primates and mammals do.

I'm not arguing that it's human destiny to be monogamous obviously. We've got too much intellectual baggage for that now so let's not speak in the strictest of senses.
What I'm saying is that there's a lot more to monogamy than land guarantees.

I have done some digging on evolution and monogamy, but not recently.

From what I recall, lifetime monogamy is pretty rare in mammals, including primates. What is more common, and I expect humans evolved, is more of a tribal system where there is “serial monogamy,” polygamy, or multiple mating combinations.

OK, catching up:

1. Yes, the debates are absurd. There are only 3 candidates in running for runoff -- we should have a 2-hour debate with just those 3 and have lots of substantive follow-up.
2. The relative roles of genes and environment are difficult to parse. And they often interact. I'm always dubious of claims grounding modern humam behavior in "evolutionary biology" or even worse "evolutionary psychology.
3. Other than that, I am not weighing in on the origin and original purpose of monogamy debate, except to congratulate benson on 33 years of marriage and counting. We're about halfway there.

I agree with this earlier statement by scott;

"There could even be an argument made that a key function of society was to protect the group as a whole from behaviors driven by instincts and genetics."

Our actions and societal structure are directly related to our modes of behavior.
This is just speculation on my part, but it seems to me that perhaps monogamy came about much earlier than the notion of property during the time that man was not a stationary creature.
The monogamous route probably created the best compromise between safety/efficiency of survival while causing the least friction amongst the tribe.

...those pesky sins were there all along including gluttony, avarice, lust and pride after all.

To add to what bxgrl said “Monogamy and marriage are 2 different things”, social monogamy (sharing resources, duties) and sexual monogamy are not the same thing.

My assumption is that humans were socially monogamous earlier on, and developed a more pure form that included sexual monogamy later.

August 28, 2013 4:26 PM - BoerumHillScott
I think “radicalized" is one of those “I can’t define it, but I know it when I see it” cases.
August 28, 2013 4:31 PM - bxgrl
Yes- that does make sense, Legion, but I am not sure if monogmay came first. My own opinion is that communities grew for mutual protection and survival, and usually one or two people became leaders. Kingship in its infancy- but those leaders were all about amassing power. And in pre-historical times, power was access to women to insure your genetic line, access to food and access to shelter. so polygamy would have come first- people wanted protection and the leader would provide it. And of course his sphere of influence would spread out to his family and friends. In some societies, leaders would determine who got to marry whom- retaining power over the spread of genetic lines. My own guess is that those on the bottom wound up being monogamous by default. Of course, societies developed from there. Just my own theory.

I do not mean disrespect by this, but I find Scott's whole discussion of monogamy to be sad and completely out of step with my values. I took a vow before an altar of God to love and cherish another human being "till death do us part", and it has given meaning to my life to try to live to that ideal. We are all human, and very few of us can meet any ideal, but it is worth trying. I don't know how to argue the issue, so all I can do is relate my experience.

I will also note that Jesus weighed in on the subject, and that is good enough for me. I say that knowing full well that that it is not a factor for most of you.

I don't think you make affirmative statements about your values or your beliefs so much as whip them out as "pearls of wisdom." If anyone can't accept diversity, it's you, not me. as for despising your values, how would you know? The only thing you actually know about me is that I'm a liberal and I love cats. But your ASSUMPTION is that I despise your values. I don't. I may disagree with them, but then again I am open to diversity. I actually believe you have a right to them. "Bxgrl's posts are a prime example of the anti-religious bias that exists on the Left today."

Oh please. How does one person's opinion always become "a prime example" of the thoughts of an extremely large group of people whenever you, Legion and Dave talk about liberals. Hyperbole, much?

Oh, he's gone, as per usual leaving wrapped in a cloud of righteous indignation.

August 28, 2013 5:47 PM - Legion
...then there's always the LOVE factor:

Real letter from 1500's:

****************************************************
To Won's Father

June 1, 1586

You always said, "Dear, let's live together until our hair turns gray and die on the same day." How could you pass away without me? Who should I and our little boy listen to and how should we live? How could you go ahead of me?

How did you bring your heart to me and how did I bring my heart to you? Whenever we lay down together you always told me, "Dear, do other people cherish and love each other like we do? Are they really like us?" How could you leave all that behind and go ahead of me?

I just cannot live without you. I just want to go to you. Please take me to where you are. My feelings toward you I cannot forget in this world and my sorrow knows no limit. Where would I put my heart in now and how can I live with the child missing you?

Please look at this letter and tell me in detail in my dreams. Because I want to listen to your saying in detail in my dreams I write this letter and put it in. Look closely and talk to me.

When I give birth to the child in me, who should it call father? Can anyone fathom how I feel? There is no tragedy like this under the sky.

You are just in another place, and not in such a deep grief as I am. There is no limit and end to my sorrows that I write roughly. Please look closely at this letter and come to me in my dreams and show yourself in detail and tell me. I believe I can see you in my dreams. Come to me secretly and show yourself. There is no limit to what I want to say and I stop here.

*************************************************************************************

The deceased was 30.

Got my hearing aid today. It's sort of amazing hearing things I never really heard before and hearing conversations coming from different directions. Binaural hearing they said might be weird at first, but it seems normal now after a few hours. Peeing sounds a lot louder. I kinda wish fish made noises. At least eyes are only needed to see a lot of "intellectual" posts written by some of you today. I think if I had to hear any of it out loud though, I would be forced to stick chop sticks into my eardrums. There's not really anyone in my life in any capacity whose shit I particularly ever want to hear, so I don't know how much actual benefit the use of this hearing aid is really going to be. I guess I can hear doorbells and knocks better now.

August 28, 2013 6:55 PM - BoerumHillScott
Been on the go, and looks like I missed some fun.

Benson, I did not find your 5:07 post insulting or disrespectful. I respect your religious views, even though I do not share them.
I think that there is a an anti-religious bias among some on the left, but it is far from universal. As Randi-said, the anti-fundamentalist bias is much more universal.

Legion, yeh, there is that love thing. It can be argued that some of it is cultural, but there is no doubt that it is there. On the other hand, lifetime love does not have the best of track records either, with or without monogamy.

I see a bit of "Anyone but Quinn" shit on my Facebook.
Since she seems to be in the middle of the pack ideologically, it seems very stupid to me.
Much of it seems, to be connected with the OWS crowd, so I guess I should not be too shocked.

Is there really an ideological difference? perhaps some nuanced differences on specifics.
Most anti-quinn resentment I hear is her giving Bloomberg the okay for the 3rd term. Made her seem too power hungry and not enough backbone. That and her slush fund antics which of course she denies.
August 28, 2013 7:56 PM - bxgrl
rob- it'll take time for your brain to adjust to hearing again. seriously- it can take up to a year.

Scott- Quinn voted to overturn term limits after we voted to have them. In fact she campaigned for them. That did it for me. I also have heard she's very highhanded.
August 28, 2013 7:56 PM - Deleted
She also looks like she has that sour smell. It's hard to explain, but a lot of women who look like Quinn have a very specific grody sour smell.

August 28, 2013 7:57 PM - Deleted
And before anyone calls me a misogynist, I am sure Bloomberg has a very specific smell as do other candidates, but I'm talking about a very specific smell.

Pepper, I read the first five or so books. Got to the point where it dragged out too long, and too many names sounded the same, so it was hard to keep track of characters. Then Jordan died around book 10. I thought the first books were really good. He needed a good editor, 5 or 6 books should have done it.

re Anyone But Quinn

The only people I think have a logical reason for that are those on the UES opposing the waste transfer station where I think she is the only candidate for it. She was in fact stridently for it in a public meeting organized by the opponents. Came out with some horseshit about how putting it in an industrial area instead would be 'environmental racism'.

I'd still prefer her to de Blasio & about equal w/Thompson. Quite concerned about today's poll.
August 28, 2013 8:16 PM - bxgrl
Why don't you like DiBlasio. etson?
August 28, 2013 8:21 PM - petebklyn
you people aren't allowed to have opinion. neither of you live here and can't vote.
August 28, 2013 8:22 PM - etson
1) Seems to be by far the most tax & spend of the candidates
2) Does not seem to support or respect the police much

That combo has proven bad for cities around the US over & over again - higher taxes forcing out at least some wealth creators and shrinking the tax base, nd worsening public safety making it a worse place for everyone. the tax base argument is much more relevant to cities & states than countries, of course, because it's easier for people to move city than country.

Thompson and Quinn seem less radical and I think Quinn was a pretty good council speaker on the whole.
August 28, 2013 8:25 PM - petebklyn
besides Diblasio lives in Park Slope. what does that say about his personal judgment?

Yes, a bit too much of skirt smoothing and braid tugging, but I've slogged through, and thoroughly enjoyed the entire series! I am reading the 13th and final book now (way too late, as you can see). Jordan did die after book 10... but Brandon Sanderson, who picked up the torch, has written the final 3 books. You can see the change in style, but Sanderson moves things along much more quickly, which is appreciated. Anyway, the reason I brought it up is because I have decided that Arkady is the Cadsuane Sedai of the OT... but she doesn't appear until the later part of the series...

I can't say he has little respect for the police, etson. I worked with him and a number of other people who fought closing firehouses and he was very clear on his respect for them and the Fire Dept. I think his issue is more with Kelly.

To be honest, I see the wealthy flocking to NYC, not leaving. But then again, the finances of wealth are so not my forte. As everyone knows ;-)

haha, bx. But that's the thing, Cadsuane may well ride a horse, if she must, but a sword? Never... her power is her words, placed just so... and, to a lesser degree, some trinket hair adornments... I do really recommend the series, now that it actually has an end, if you have the time...
August 28, 2013 8:48 PM - etson
To the original point - if Quinn loses narrowly the margin will almost certainly be accounted for by the UES folks she turned against her.
These days (unfortunately!) it's a pretty reliably Dem part of the city and whilst the issue doesn't resonate much outside that area, it's probably the #1 issue in that neighborhood.
August 28, 2013 10:15 PM - Donatella
My priorities for mayor are:

1. Operational excellence. We continue to need great city services: police, fire, sanitation, subways and public transportation.
2. Control of Crime - The police might be able to do a better job with their stop and frisk - I am sure there is
room for improvement and judgement on the part of the police - but they are doing a good job over all and homicides were 414 last year and this year 30% lower than that on a pro rata basis this year.
3. Sane tax policy.
4. Keeping the corporate tax base, which will keep jobs here. The above three will help this.
5. Quality board of education. I admit that I do not know too much about how to improve this. I have only personal experience (as well as family) with private school, ie. Catholic School. But teaching has to be top notch and STEM orientation is very important.

I think Bloomberg did a good job except that I am not a fan of a lot of his "lifestyle" moves, i.e. the sugary drinks, the obsession with smoking (i.e. no smoking in parks or beaches) and of course, what I consider to be an insane biking policy.

I will vote for Lhota.
August 28, 2013 10:31 PM - Deleted
My priorities for mayor are:

1. A block on people moving here who live in states no surrounded by water by at least one side (I'm including Illinois in this)

2. Only let poor people use Pre-K programs and public school. Those who can afford to send their crotchfruit to private school shouldn't be allowed to use the public school system.

3. Tax credits/breaks for the child-free.

4. Price caps on ice cream, frozen yogurt, and coffee.

5. Dedicated beard and cankle-free zones.
a. facial hair a violation for ALL people handling food (this is already on the books but it seems to get a blind eye for some reason. Call your senator!
b. Cankle burkas in public

6. Get rid of the Landmarks Nanny Society. Or just give them one tiny little section of some lame brownstone neighborhood and let them all go nuts and pay 40 billion dollars per house. Why not?

7. Mandatory STD and communicable disease tags.

8. Eliminate ALL income restrictions for public housing. I am not anti public housing, but hate that it's only for the poor and the working poor with dependent children and seniors. EVERYONE should get it if it exists.

9. Move all of NYU, Columbia, and that stupid for profit Film Academy "school" in SoHo to Westchester.

10. Rubber walls in the subways and in subway cars.

I won't vote cuz it's a sucker's game and there's no one who actually GETS it.

Whole thing because it is perfect...

The screen door slams
Mary' dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
Darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

You can hide 'neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a saviour to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero
That's understood
All the redemption I can offer girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now ?
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow
Back your hair
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh-oh come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh-oh Thunder Road oh Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road sit tight take hold
Thunder Road

Well I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free
All the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind so Mary climb in
It's town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win
