Maybe I'll take some pastry pics. They do love their sweets here. I was trying to be non-controversial with the bridge pic... Plus, I kind of like it, even though it's a bit incongruous with the surrounding architecture...

Yes, bring us some sweets, please.

Bridge is cool but strange in its placement. I never know how to feel about blatant, conflicting juxtaposing structures.

pete...I was at Della Pietra, the new meat shop...don't bother. it is poorly merchandised, even for meat. It only offers Prime Aged and has a limited selection and prices 50% higher than Los Paesanos.....skirt steak at $22/ lb????? Strips at $35??????? WTF??? I mentioned this to the owner of Los Paisanos and he thanked me for it.

Nobody there when I went in either. A few shelves around the perimeter sparsely merchandised. I bet it'll close in 6months. No business sense whatsoever.

Maybe the Sahadi's guys could take it over and sell meat and fish.

Baby is growing.
That's why she's waking up more often between meals,
the nutrition doesn't last as long so she wakes up wanting more.

This phase will last a while. Get your sleep when you can.

Three main reasons the baby will cry:
-hungry
-diaper is wet and uncomfortable
-gastrointestinal discomfort

I hope you learned to "burp" the baby already.
The gas makes them really uncomfortable.
Some parents don't like to use the gas drops but I found them really helpful.

As they learn to eat more substantial foods, they sleep longer as the meal "sticks to the ribs more".

Good morning everyone. :o)

Yeah Legion, those seem to be the main culprits. She's sleeping 2-3.5 hrs between meals so it's not so bad, just dreaming of 6 straight hours.

I'm wary of those drops too, but they worked for you?

GM. Randi, just keep her awake and nursing as long as possible during the night when she does wake up. I used those (not that specific brand) drops very rarely, but yes, they do work.
#31
August 27, 2013 9:11 AM - rf
Beano contains an enzyme that helps digest the sugar in beans and vegetables. Simethicone (Mylecon, Little Tummies Gas Drops) works by breaking up gas bubbles in your digestive tract.

Randi, maybe you could call the ped to ask about the gas drops. But really, it's pretty normal for a 1-month-old to wake up after 2-3.5 hours. Very hard on Mom and Dad though!

You know what's annoying? People who bring their babies to AA meetings. There's also this one chick who brings her pitbull, while not AS annoying or gross as human babies, it still gets annoying. It's like if you can't find a baby sitter then please sit home and drink cuz youre baby is going to make some people in the meeting uncomfortable and want to drink (not in my case I dont want to drink) but I had to move seats at one meeting because the baby stunk like ass, kept making noise, and at one point had the f'ing nerve to touch my knee.

I bought some really first quality pork chops from Costco. They are boneless, and over an inch thick. One is quite a meal. They leave enough fat on the edges to allow it to broil up nicely, you don't have to do much other than season. I want to try grilling them one of these days. We had some last night.

I took that political orientation test and it said that I had a laissez faire attitude about business and the attitudes associated with a clergyman, was conservative and could be considered right wing and had no strong opinions. But it said I left out question 29 - go back and do that. But it didn't save my answers.

So I did it again - with an entirely new set of questions. I was a borderline right winger but not a clergyman; this time I had the tender social attitudes of a protective parent and had libertarian attitudes (which I don't).

So basically - a crock.

OK, I will rephrase, lest you think I am putting words in everyone's mouth. It seems to ME that a lot of people are ridiculing Miley Cyrus in the media and on the internet, but of course, that is only MY observation based on MY read of what many other people, but not all, are posting on various websites and saying/writing in various news outlets, but not on all of them.

And I will add, though speaking ONLY FOR MYSELF AND KNOWING OTHERS MAY HAVE A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW, that you sure take the fun out of online water cooler chitchat.

But feel free to end off with your usual smug comment, to applause.

Really interesting article six, but I don't think Miley ever thought that far. I understand what everyone is interpreting the implications of what she did as, but I think with Miley it's much simpler. She, pretty much like Beiber, think their whitebread, banal personas won't get them very far. they associate Black music and culture with urban sophistication and popularity. Miley would have outgrown the Hannah Montana persona very soon, and then what? I imagine she saw herself as becoming just another failed child star if she didn't change. Unfortunately she went for gross and bizarre instead of grown up.

"Go to hell. "

You really that angry? Seriously?

"Tell me, oh clever one, than why did you start your statement with a reference to yesterday's discussion."

Because i was being glib, as I said above. I will cop to being glib on the internet sometimes. But if you want to take my initial comment as a serious debating proposition (which it was not), I made a very shorthand observation that, in effect, says we were both wrong yesterday and suggested a third way of looking at the media reaction. But you took it as a direct attack on (a purported misreading) of all you wrote yesterday. I think that's a bit off an overread and overreaction.

I do not wish that you go to hell. Just that you lighten up a bit.

Last word is yours if you want it.

OK, changing the subject, I am enjoying this week's "Zitz" cartoon in the NYDN (another reason to like the DN over NYP -- Zitz is a much better cartoon than, say, Mallard Fillmore, and you get two columns of cartoons). The dad in Zitz has a "Yellow Submarine" earworm this week and is trying to get rid of it. The earworm is depicted as a giant replica of the Beatles' Yellow Submarine stuck to his head. Perfect. Today the teenage son told him one way to get rid of it is to sing it out loud (but without infecting others). So far, I'm not infected with that earworm. Love that they are doing this topic. I expect it to go all week.

If the other and the baby can live on just one income, then no. Make sure you talk to someone about the advantages/disadvantages of whole life vs. term life. Also, look into a disability policy. They are cheap when you are young.

August 27, 2013 1:04 PM - dibs
You'll have to get a blood test so that 3rd stage syphilis that's causing your psychotic issues might be a problem.
August 27, 2013 1:05 PM - dibs
Also, the best insurance company for whole life is Northwestern Mutual.
August 27, 2013 1:05 PM - Slopefarm
Both should get, randi. Whoever makes more money (now and projecte in future) could be insured for more money, but you want to be covered to replace income in either event. Get a term policy (no need to insure beyond last child's entry into adulthood). Lock in a decent low premium while you are young and healthy. Don't get a policy that doubles as a kind of investment vehicle. Keep it simple and do your investing elsewhere.

Also, do wills and name who will step in for your kid(s) if you should both die (and a backup).
August 27, 2013 1:07 PM - dibs
Yeah, term through kid's college education will be the cheapest. You just cancel a term at any point and stop paying. Whole life is more problematic but in the event of a finacial crisis, you can borrow against the cash value.
August 27, 2013 1:07 PM - Slopefarm
Yeah, disability a good idea.

Our policies are with Northwestern Mutual. Fixed premium through age 65 then policy's done.

If it's an insurance company and it sounds like a fucking scam, it is. Also, insurance people are often true believers and overinsure themselves.

Spend less on insurance (but cover life adequately) and put away and invest the difference elsewhere.

Plus it's really easy to park on the street in Bed-Stuy, even with the Tues-Fri/Mon-Thurs rules so driving to get what you need is easy enough.

probably won't be so easy to park once all the moonfaces show up with their subarus!!!
August 27, 2013 2:00 PM - rf
By the time it's hard to park, the good local stuff will come.

I lived in Clinton Hill (near Mr. B.'s house) from 1989 until 2005. It's hard to imagine how much the whole neighborhood, but especially Fulton St. in Ft. Greene and Myrtle Ave. past the projects, has changed in the past decade, never mind the 90s. But it did, and Bed-Stuy will change too.
August 27, 2013 2:03 PM - Deleted
i'll wait to drop my 2mm (that i don't have anyway) until that change comes. whats the point of moving to an overpriced neighborhood BEFORE the good local stuff shows up? Isn't it supposed to be affordable but promising, not super fucking expensive but promising? somehow the equation is all skewed.
August 27, 2013 2:05 PM - dibs
When I moved there in 2007, there was only Petit Bossun (sp?)...good food, BYOB, horrible service and that closed. By 2011, there was Peaches, Peaches Hot House, Saraghina and Celestino plus a bunch of coffee places. The C Food supermarket is only 2 blocks away from this place, and will have everything you need except veal and good fish.
August 27, 2013 2:06 PM - dibs
When that change somes you won't get a place like that for $2MM!!!!! Now you sound like BHO!!!!
August 27, 2013 2:06 PM - Partridge
" Isn't it supposed to be affordable but promising..."

Very true. Bed-Stuy is inflated, IMO.
August 27, 2013 2:07 PM - rf
Besides, it's not like you could touch a house like that for $2mm or anywhere close to it in Ft. Greene or Clinton Hill. Not that I don't think the price is ridiculous but someone will pay.

My building is adjacent to the yard of a house that was offered for $1.2 million about a year ago and featured on Brownstoner and talked about here. Everyone poo-pooed the price but the owners paid the price--there were multiple offers. It is a beautiful house with a ton of original detail but there are a lot of things I wouldn't like about it, like no quiet, private outdoor space. (It's a corner house with the yard on the street. Currently used mostly for parking but very noisy, not like a real back yard.)

I guess I was just talking about actual trust funds that I find so vile and unfair.

August 27, 2013 2:16 PM - dibs
It would have been nice to have gotten the $250,000 capital gain which would be excluded under current tax law. But I did fine after one considers all the money I saved every year by selling the Manhattan condo (CCs and taxes) and then getting the rental income on the garden apt on top of that.

Obviously with 20/20 hindsight I should have waited another 18 months to sell.
August 27, 2013 2:18 PM - Donatella
Randi, as a person who endured bad supermarkets, no green grocers or services (though this claim infuriates some), I am finally enjoying some amenities over here on the southeast corner of Fort Greene. My neighbor complains these these amenities have brought a decline in the happiness vibe in the neighborhood. I can cope with that. It was getting irritating to drive around for things.

A big loud neighborhood original with dreadlocks who I hadn't seen for a while saw me and SCREAMED "HEY let's give a man a Christian hug." I asked him where he'd been and he told me that he bought a place in Bed Sty and was renting to the new breed. "What? The gentrifiers"? He assured me that since I was here for 10 years, I wasn't in that category. Phew.

Randi, re Bed-Stuy: I would be much more concerned about schools, if you are planning to stay in Brooklyn and sending your kid to public school. Of course I know yours is just a newborn, but it's what I worried about the most when I got my kid, much closer to school age. I was pretty sure I would have to move, but we managed to thread the needle. There are enough options now in Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill/District 13, which was not really the case when we lived in Clinton Hill. Not so much in Stuyvesant Heights or even southwestern Bed-Stuy which is in District 13. I schlepped my kid to Chinatown but it's no longer an option to get a kid into a District 2 (the best public elementary and middle schools in Manhattan) school.

If the mission is to damage or send a message to the regime in response to chemical weapons use, there is no effective option that's also in accord with wider US interests. I kinda love the song, "Blurred Lines". Very naked video. Miley's role was a pull-out from that video. She certainly took it in a very different direction.
August 27, 2013 6:09 PM - dibs
yes, because the Blurred lInes video doesn't objectify only black women but objectifies black, latino and white women, unlike that racist Miley Cyprus bitch.

...man Syria looks like one big crap sandwich and Obama's about to take a big bite out of it.

You've got Russia, China and Iran lined up on one side backing the good doctor Assad.
On the other we've got the US and NATO forces along with the Saudis.
The rebel forces are largely made up of Al Quaeda irregulars and other radical Islamists while Assad has a large batch of chemical weapons and an itchy trigger finger.

What could go wrong?

Performing lots of 'commie-hippie-peace-and-love' songs from my childhood. (Yes, I still know the words ; ) ) Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and the practically-pre-embalmed-but-still-sweet Smokey Robinson.

August 27, 2013 11:08 PM - Deleted
Actually 10 years doesn't make sense. Maybe like 8? Never liked her old music though, her new stuff is much better, but I did like her show so that counts for being a Hannah Head since like the mid 00's at least.

August 27, 2013 11:12 PM - Donatella
I saw that article, etson. That would be crazy if it was true. That was a time when "women's liberation" and the feminist movement was real and women were struggling to make inroads professionally and to have more choices in society. 1973 was the year of Roe vs Wade and while my thinking about that is obvious, I was excited to be growing up when the world was opening up in so many ways for women. Even so, I never warmed to Billie Jean King; she was rough and not so likeable.

The event itself was silly and embarrassing and I felt that way at the time.

August 27, 2013 11:29 PM - Donatella

True, Part, but it was such a farce. It even felt staged. I never really played tennis but one of my friends did and I used to go with him to the US open for years. She was playing then and I used to enjoy watching her play, but I didn't warm up to her the way I did to Chrissy Everett. And Tracy Austin. And Pam Shriver. Even Martina Naritalova. Sounds silly saying that since I never KNEW them, just liked them a lot more.
