There are certain photos that bring back a rush of feelings
and memories. They become precious momentos.
I have one of my son on a trip to Cape Cod where he's standing
next to a small tree and he's 3 years old.
He's not quite smiling but has an expression more of looking
at the camera and past us.

For some reason, because I know he'll never be that little person again
and perhaps because it seems he's almost looking off into a distant future
beyond me, I feel a bittersweetness that never dissolves.

Although some aspects of hipsterism are certainly up for ridicule, it gets tired pretty quickly. I would think having a site that does nothing but mock people all day, every day, would wither out and die, itself, as it did. I mean, what's the purpose? Sitting there and making fun of people all day? Feeling superior that you aren't one of them? Seems to me there's some jealousy there.

Besides which, all that ragging on hipsters doesn't mean squat. They don't read the site, and if they do, they don't care what people think about them. Many of them may be doing mockable things like selling pickles, but that pickle maker is laughing all the way to the bank, and is paying his or her rent, and providing for their families, and living the way he/she wants to live. Even the guy painting veggies on the wall is a happy camper, doing what he wants to do.

Some jealous blogger is foaming at the mouth, along with his acolytes - they wish.

There's no way you can understand this if you aren't from a place like I'm from, but the most exciting, thrilling event was when we won state in class A football in 1963. There have been more exciting and important events in my life but I don't think the actual "feeling" of that night has ever been surpassed. The 50th anniversary reunion is this weekend. I'm sending the organizer, Joe Bob, the following message:
"Sorry I canít be there but Iíve gotten involved in some local political activities that are taking up all my time. There are about 17 candidates for mayor, including the Republican, Democratic, and Rent Is Too Damn High parties. I'm sexting all of them. Iím trying my best service them equally but it takes a lot of time.

So far Iíve wanted to remain anonymous so am sexting under the name Sydney Naugahydes. Hoping to get some interest from film makers, then Iíll let them know who I am."

Academia is a small, insular world. Three acquaintences of mine have shown up in the archives in the past few days. I did a double-take at one - an Egyptian woman who was a classmate at Georgetown, always veiled with very very conservative clothing, nothing form-fitting. She was wearing tight jeans, a button-down shirt, and no veil. I had never seen so much as a strand of her hair. She once didn't come to a party I hosted celebrating the Egyptian Revolution because she didn't want to be in a place with alcohol. We made lunch plans for tomorrow (it's Ramadan, so she's not fasting).

Rob, once again you prove you know very little about me, what I care about, or even what I write about. I am the last person you'll find cheerleading overpriced housing stock. For someone who hates the internet, and hates this site so much, you certainly spend an awful lot of time here.

And how do you know someone isn't paying their rent from a pickle business? Done any research on the subject? Or just talking bs again?

Oh, and my writing about things no one cares about pays my bills. The pickle maker and I have something in common after all.

bxgirl- No work done on your old house yet. The owner is stuck in landmarks hell apparently. I think they are going to condo it out and build out the back. Not 100%.
I'm still trying to get him to remove the dead tree that fell down and is leaning into my backyard and my neighbors.
Anyone got a good architect that they recommend to me. You see the same people on bstoner commenting but they are super expensive and I don't need that much done really.

August 1, 2013 3:44 PM - bxgrl
Adam- A good friend of ours is an architect, and a really great person. I'll have MM email you his name. You'll love him. And you could also talk to Morgan.

The other tree finally fell? MM had a huge old locust cut down before she moved- that one was already leaning on the building next door. The tree guy told us that if you call Verizon and tell them the tree is on the phone lines and about to bring them down, they may come and take care of it.
#90
August 1, 2013 3:47 PM - Arkady
6 - It'll be interesting to see MM's reaction to that map: I have a feeling that a lot of the dates are off & are just a function of the City's filling in a random number for large chunks of houses.
Adam - Slopey's away for a week but I think he used an architect he was happy w/.
#91
August 1, 2013 3:57 PM - MontroseMorris
Six, the interactive color map is interesting, and must have cost a fortune. Unfortunately, they got their data from city records, and many of the dates are really inaccurate. I clicked on some buildings that I know are from a certain date, and they are off by 30 years. Some of that info is available from designation reports, so there really isn't any excuse for landmarked blocks to be innaccurate, but they are. I know no one cares except architecture geeks, but still.....

It's a plush queen-sized Simmons Beautyrest. It's three years old, and feels like you're sleeping on a fucking cloud - even when you're unknowingly sleeping next to a lying cheater. In a bad relationship and have to lie next to the constant reminder that you didn't go to grad school so that you could move and get engaged? Then this is the bed for you, it will get you to fucking REM and for 6-8 hours every night you'll forget that you're sleeping next to a sociopath. There are no stains, and this thing hasn't seen action in a while.

There is an expression in Japanese "Oshiri ga aoi" your butt is blue which has the same meaning as wet behind the ears. Refers to immaturity. It refers to the spot Japanese are born with in the lower small of the back. It almost looks like a little black and blue mark. Many other indigenous peoples have it -- for example Mexicans and South American "Indians".
August 1, 2013 4:59 PM - Donatella
I have had a tiring and frustrating day today. I am trying to regroup. I am doing better than R who has had a string of calamities which are almost comic. It all started with the boat's hull filling up with water. Is it a full moon? Thank God none of this is serious.

Cute kid Randi. Good work.

If the owner of my former home is in landmarks hell, it's because he wants to put a large extension like my next door neighbor's, on the back. That house was built that way originally, and is the only one in the group with an extension. There is a large gap on NY Avenue that allows one to see into those backyards, so any extension he wants to build can be seen from the street. He's never going to get one as big as the one my neighbor had, if for no other reason than by doing so, he's cutting off the light to both neighbors on either side. He could probably get a small extension if he goes through landmarks correctly. He knows how to do that, because he renovated another building on my block, also landmarked, and he did a great job.
Edited at August 1, 2013 5:24 PM
August 1, 2013 5:50 PM - Arkady
MM - Someone across the street from me is trying to do that too & the yard is over 100' long so he has the FAR. His neighbors don't want a 30', 4-floor extension & are trying to fight it. What are the best agencies for them to hit?
August 1, 2013 6:00 PM - MontroseMorris
Your community board is the first place. Since you are in a landmarked area, all alterations of that kind are supposed to be presented to the Land Use committee even before the LPC sees it. The CB's recommendations, yea or nay, are factored into LPC's decisions. If his neighbors don't want this, they need to write letters, take pictures, etc, and present them to the CB. That happened in CHN regarding another oversized extension, and the owner ended up downsizing his plans. In his case, the extension ended up being the same size as originally planned but only two stories, not four. He was not happy, but it worked out in the end. We live in a crowded city, compromises have to be made. We also have to live next to our neighbors, why piss them off every day for the rest of your life? Makes no sense.

August 1, 2013 6:05 PM - Deleted
benson, she has that on her lower back/butt.

August 1, 2013 6:07 PM - MontroseMorris
In our case, Arkady, the homeowner and his architect made a presentation to the land use committee. I just happened to be there at that meeting. I didn't go to CB meetings all that often. He showed them what he wanted to do, explained why, and his architect had a rendering on a large foamboard. Unfortunately, the homeowner's architect was an arrogant jerk who acted as if this group of non-architect CB members were beneath his professional attention, and he pissed people off. Their proposal was rejected. He took it to LPC, and they rejected it too. When they tried again, with a scaled down version, the homeowner came alone. He passed easily, and LPC gave him their seal of approval as well.

Ooooops. Hope no one saw you... You must have had more pain than, i, though, coming off of a double feature...
August 1, 2013 8:38 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
the pain was in my foot from boogying with the bartender :-) if they saw me, they said nothing. and if they had said something, i likely wouldn't have cared. i was sleepy and she was boring me!

Heard a crazy story tonight of a former employee who I think the world of, falling victim to an abusive relationship. He has gotten himself out with few scars but it was a nutty and scary scene for a while.

Poor guy. He is amazing. Not sure how he could have allowed it to happen. He is a very confident, extremely attractive, super intelligent guy.

August 1, 2013 9:43 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
I know of a woman, friend of a very close friend's friend, who gets beaten up regularly by her husband. They all live in Brooklyn Heights. And she eggs him on, telling him he's worthless, an actual loser, etc etc etc. And she keeps going back, won't leave him. Has plenty of friends to rely on, makes a decent living, could leave at literally anytime. Could leave for work and just not return. But no, she goes home, they get super drunk regularly, and she yells at him, and he beats her, she lies at work about walking into doors, etc to cover up the bruises, though no one believes her, and she goes home again, and again, and again. It's been years of hospital visits and police visitations, the works. It's shocking to me. She's a bright, educated, employed woman. It's a sickness on both parts.

August 1, 2013 9:47 PM - pepper
Wow! That's some story, Cobble. Sad, really.
August 1, 2013 9:50 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
And I'm just giving you the crib notes version. The details I've heard make it even more shocking. You'd never guess it to meet her, as I have a couple times. I've never met the husband. They have a country house, and invited my friends, and just started fighting right in front of them, to the point that my friends were uncomfortable and wanted to leave but the couple told them to stay, and they did, and watched a really sick scene unfold until husband went to bed. And the woman - increasingly drunk - kept ranting and trying to get the husband to get out of bed and fight with her. I can't remember all the details, but it blew my mind.

August 1, 2013 9:59 PM - Partridge
Holy crap, Cobble! That is beyond comprehension.

The abuser in my story it constantly drunk too. In medical school. smart as a whip, I understand. Gets so drunk she pees on herself. Has done so in the presence of my young friend many times. Bizarre, I thought. I've known a few friend who often got wasted. Never saw them lose complete control.

August 1, 2013 10:09 PM - pepper
Both stories seem unreal to me... so yours is a woman physically abusing a man, Part?
Edited at August 1, 2013 10:09 PM
August 1, 2013 10:10 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Yes, beyond comprehension. Unreal. It boggles the mind to think of it. I've mercifully never seen anyone lose physical control that way. Alcohol is usually involved.
August 1, 2013 10:20 PM - Partridge
Yes, Pep. Much more psychological abuse than physical, but that as well. Huge scenes, cops, hospitals, attempted suicides, psych wards. Her parents wouldn't come to the hospital to care for her. They told him to handle it. He was trying to get away and they made him stay. The two are in their mid 20's.

Things got so crazy, he got on a plane and left to his parents out of state. They were engaged and planning a wedding.
August 1, 2013 10:21 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
I'm so glad he had the self-preservation to leave. Just leave. There is a dynamic that develops that is very unhealthy, to put it mildly.

No, sadly. She is out of the country on a program for school during the summer.

Her parents demanded that my friend send them a check for a deposit they placed on a hall for the wedding because he broke the engagement. They were hoping to hell to pawn her off on him for eternity. He sent them a check for 1/2 of the cost.

Of course it's unacceptable, but if both parties are okay with it, then it's no one's business. If people broke up every codependent couple there's be like zero couples left. LIke I said if kids are involved, that's different. If two people just like to beat each other up, well, that's all kinds of fucked up but it's on them. If it's just one sided abuse then that's even more fucked up. Some people get off on that shit though, sick yes. Any of my business? nope.

August 1, 2013 10:39 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
I'm so thankful to hear they aren't getting married. The parents are in deep denial or oblivious. It was worth writing the check. So sorry for your young friend.

August 1, 2013 10:46 PM - Partridge
apple, tree, I guess.

He's doing well now from what I learned today. It has been about 2 months. I'm hoping he gets help. He needs to examine why he allowed this to go on as long as it did. They were only together for about 9 months. Why he went from dating to living with to domestic partnership to engaged in that quick a time with those warning signs is indicative of issues on his part.
August 1, 2013 10:50 PM - pepper

One of my friends was getting hit by her husband. It was a long and complicated story and I actually liked her husband but he had a problem - a big one. He would get so angry and frustrated about everything. I knew him from Japan where they met. He is Canadian she is from China. She ran rings around him brains and talent wise - she was not an in your face person but he struggled with his career and she is an incredible businesswoman and made a fortune, is an accomplished artist, speaks 4 languages...... And he would hit her. She left him but now I think they are sort of together. She got really really depressed and I used to check in on her by phone for a while in Vancouver where they were. She is finally ok now.

I am really sorry about your sister rob.

In college I learned cults were called new religious movements. I used to run home to my dorm to watch the daily coverage of the Waco standoff. Experienced hostage negotiators still bitterly remark about how innocents were being allowed to leave via basic negotiation techniquses until the Media Complex demanded a resolution and Reno caved.
