I can't sit in the dark silence like that hearing random people farts. barf. Came back for some more coffee, then just going to sit in starbucks and read before work.

Yes, delepp, I need to see the Mel Brooks episode.

I think Young Frankenstein is Brooks's and Kahn's best -- most lockied in to the genre it was spoofing and played it straight deadpan.

Also, I instantly remember Kahn in What's Up Doc, being dragged out of the banquet and making wiggly scuff lines on the floor with her heels.

What's up Doc is hilarious. Watched the Karloff version of frankenstein not long ago and Brooks was quite faithfull, down to wacky maid that cloris leachman played straight as well.
#51
July 22, 2013 10:02 AM - BoerumHillScott
I don't hate the royal family or anything, I just don't think they are people to be looked up to, and I don't consider their life events to be all that news worthy, certainly not the main story of the last week.
#52
July 22, 2013 10:04 AM - dibs
Scott, do you think most of the people in the US and UK would be more interested in the events in Syria?
#53
July 22, 2013 10:08 AM - Slopefarm
Agreed, delepp. As funny as blazing saddles and High Anxiety are, you don't ordinarily watch a western or hitchcock film and start seeing the Brooks spoof along with it. YF matches the original in tone, and almost scene for scene and character for character. I bet you got a "Puttin on the Ritz" earworm watching karloff original when they took the stage.

I must admit, I was hiking in the desert east of San Diego once with Mrs. Slopey. We turned a corner around a big rock outcropping and I half expected to see the Count Basie Orchestra.

pete, my post about our fridge went MIA. We had same issue, fridge was warm and freezer was ice cold. He told us to defrost the frost free as ice maybe blocking the vents in the fridge. Worked like a charm.
#59
July 22, 2013 10:27 AM - Slopefarm
Dave, I actually think that an election where the defining issue is whether we, the public, "forgive" Spitzer or Weiner helps those candidates, because the answer tends to be yes and the question obscures both the other candidates better questions of whether they are fit for and are the best candidate for those jobs. For example, what does Spitzer's massive flameout as governor before the scandal went public say about whether he would be a good comptroller. If I'm Stringer, I would not waste a dime on ads reminding the public he was client nine. I'd get quiet testimonials from people spitzer wrongly prosecuted, from the state troopers he required to do political stuff, and remind people generally of all the other stuff they grew to hate about him. I have never seen someone squander so much political capital so fast, all by making every issue a matter of personal vendetta. he overplayed his hand like crazy and got rolled by Bruno and Silver.
#60
July 22, 2013 10:29 AM - petebklyn

No, I don't watch the Sunday AM circle jerks either. It's all I can do to listen to the CNBC pundits during the day. Occasionally, guests come on with useful information but the commentators are just morons for the most part.

#65
July 22, 2013 10:42 AM - dibs
Yes, and pulling the plug for a half an hour or so might work.

If it is there haven't been many changes.

And the only one I saw, I commented was not good. They substituted eggplant for the prosciutto with the buratini. Now it looks like it's served with heirloom tomatoes....which may or may not be good but the prosciutto was really good.

I also told the guy I was sitting next to that they need a cheese course and he agreed

dh is too young to understand that half the experience of all good pasta dishes is the texture, bite or el dente of the pasta with the given sauce. Different pastas have different bites.

randi -- the oyster bar is now a thread over there -------------->.

I suspect there will be some delay between birth and public announcement. There are required chains of communication within the royal household before this can go public and they will want to make sure they can safely say mother and baby are well (and will need more time to figure out what to say if they are not). This is not a case of how fast it takes to get the i-phone vids up on fb.

Back home in Troy!

Dave, I got passed by lots of speedy Canadians with Quebec plates on the Thruway. And I was going above the speed limit. They all have lead feet. Not too many state troopers today, only saw two.

July 22, 2013 5:06 PM - dibs
I wonder if a speeding ticket here counts against them up in Canada. Maybe not.

I wouldn't mind paying the $$ for a ticket but don't want the points

I don't think the risk was really that evident, to the extent that the damage actually accurred. Many of these homes have been there over 100 years. yes, they are on the shore but there had never been anything like Sandy.

$30,000 isn't anywhere near enough to lift even a relatively small home so the homeowners will still have to pony up.

While not nearly as popular as Nate Silver, the Freakanomics guys were at the NYT for a few years, then went independent again. I think part of their beef is that they did not like being behind the NYT paywall - bad for overall marketing.

We have a machine at work that digitizes slides and transparencies. How many do you need digitized? I don't know how to do it, but our scanners do and as long as it's not a gazillion I could ask if they would do it for me.

The duct work is atrocious and yes the wood and brick make it too dark and monochromatic. Kitchen is great but overall the apartment looks more like an airport terminal than a home. The bar on the left and the Duty-Free shop off on the right behind the glass wall. ;)

July 22, 2013 7:50 PM - MontroseMorris
I never thought I could say this, but the 11th Ave loft has too much wood and brick, looks too monochromatic. I'd have to cover some of those walls or ceilings. Maybe with some soffits, because I absolutely hate that ductwork. You don't usually see gigantic ductwork like that in NYC, seems to be more popular in LA and Chicago lofts. (from my vast experience watching home shows, and looking at magazines) I like the space, but not what they did with it.

I like the Wythe Ave loft, with the different materials on walls and ceilings, but don't like what they did in there, either. Bedroom is the worst.
Edited at July 22, 2013 7:50 PM
July 22, 2013 8:00 PM - PandoraSnaps

Painting brick is bad on an exposed wall inside or outside. Does not allow moisture to evaporate. Interior, non-exposed walls are fine.

I really like for a loft to look like a loft, with exposed sprinkler pipes, ductwork, and columns, but I agree that the first one in Chelsea has too much ductwork, brick and beams. but I really like the blue chairs in it. LOVE the wyeth st loft, especially the sofa made of different fabrics. don't really care for new construction "lofts", or the true lofts that have been over- renovated.
