Yup. Hi Snaps, went with the dark natural on the geetar, should be here in a couple days!

I guess whistleblower protection laws don't apply when you out a secret government organization, no matter how many laws they break. Oh wait, since the Patriot Act, it's not actually possible for the government to break laws any more. Oh well. I guess one consequence of someone else's knee-jerk reaction is that you get kicked in the nads...

Stupid Congress. Stupid Senate. Stupid President. Coupl'a guys blow up a coupl'a buildings, and all of a sudden we're living in a more repressive society, and spending billions to keep it that way. Why am I reminded of the Soviet Union spending itself into bankruptcy try to keep up with SDI?

I forgot this morning's meeting was a meditation meeting, so I escaped out the door just as they were about to turn off the lights and pull down the shades and close the door. No way am I sitting there for 15 minutes in stifling humidity in my work clothes in dark silence. Meditation does not work for everyone, and I truly believe it can actually be BAD for some people (me included).

OH! And before the meeting starts some guy comes up to me, interupts me while I was reading a book btw, asks me what I did this weekend (no clue who this guy was btw) and I was like um well I chilled at the beach and played some video games. WELL he scrunches his face as if my answer was selfish or something and started plathering on and on about all the community service and volunteering he did and how he's come to terms with being a gay christian. Then mentioned there was all kinds of drama at some gay sober dance party and how I should avoid the drama and im thinking please GTFO my face the only drama I see is you flapping your gums!

At the risk of being labeled sexist, *in general*, men have greater muscle mass, and *in general*, men have always concentrated on the power game.

Serena, Navratilova, Billy Jean King notable exceptions.

As comedian Robert Klein once remarked, "Give Billy Jean 30 more pounds, and not only will she beat you at tennis, she'll knock your teeth down your throat."
July 1, 2013 9:07 AM - Arkady

dibs, Nah, aggravated pulled plantar fascia during softball. Hurt it a few weeks ago, and re-aggravated it yesterday, attempting to beat out an infield single on a cement ballfield.

Cobble *very* far down my list of kick-worthys. Actually, not even on the list. Also, she's nice and soft, so injury unlikely.

And anyways, I far prefer the "heavy ashtray to back of head while opponents back is turned" method. Less chance of blowback... :-) (nh)

Gm, all. Dog days of summer already, I see.

Rob, here's my argument for meditation, for you to mull over or not. A regular meditation practice of 5-10 minutes 4-5 times per week can be a great way to get control over some of the crazy shit that goes on in one's brain. It is not to "relax" or find "inner peace" or anything like that, but simply to gain a little more awareness, perspective and ability to maintain a sense of mindfulness within one's life. It's taken me years of false starts but I am finally starting to establish a regular practice and I do notice a difference. It is subtle, though. And it is being used more and more within the health field for everything from combatting addition to pain management (no, it doesn't make pain go away, but can help people deal with the difficulty of living with it every day).

That said, it really helps to have good guidance and instruction to start, and I couldn't vouch for the guidance you would have gotten in the meditiation group you left today. 15 minutes is a long time to sit in meditation for a first session. It is difficult to sit there with all the noise in your brain and not get up and either act on it or try to drown it out or distract yourself. If you could learn to sit in a gentle mindfulness meditiaton for 5-10 minutes on a regular basis, you'd be that much further along in dealing with things.
July 1, 2013 9:22 AM - BirdnestHead
Lisicki battling back, but looks like we're heading to 3rd set...

Since I stopped drinking, there hasn't been a lot of "crazy shit" going on in my brain, seriously. I'm just not worried about anything anymore. I leader a super simple life.

Also, I DO meditate on a daily basis. It's called watching porn!

July 1, 2013 9:47 AM - Donatella
BnH, having had that problem myself way back, I found that a heel cup in the shoe to cradle the heel really relieved a lot of the pain. It gets better and I had a few cortisone shots too. The doctor told me that I have a high arch and that kind of foot tends to have issues with plantar fasciitis. But probably any kind of anti-inflammatory NSAID would help like Advil, unless your doctor is giving you a stronger prescription version which is Naproxen. Good luck with that. I know. It HURTS.
July 1, 2013 9:51 AM - Donatella
I would imagine that watching fish is pretty meditative. Way back I was considering working at Bloomberg. In their Princeton offices, they had tons of big blue computer screens and they also had (same exact size and shapes) fish tanks full of tropical fish. I couldn't believe how calming it was to see those fish amid the nuttiness of a newsroom. They have them now in their New York offices but the NY office is extremely razzle dazzle and the fish tanks are huge and the effect isn't the same.

My nephew-in-law has plantar & was told it's because his feet are so flat. He wears a strap to bed at night that keeps the foot in a rigid right angle to his ankle. Also has orthotics in his shoes because he's on his feet a lot in the day.

Agreed, dona. When MIL was in ICU, I found it meditative to walk her dogs. It required light attention but left room for the mind to wander but the dogs managed to pull me back from drifting off from the present.

Which reminds me, very sad news in our family. the last of MIL's (now BIL's) dogs died over the weekend. When MIL died two years ago, BIL moved into her house and took over care of her two aging dogs, big, happy lab mixes. Both had already slowed down at that point and showed signs of age. Jake died last year. Katie had been diagnosed with Cushing's recently, and had lost much of her appetite in the last few weeks. It turns out she was starting on kidney failure. RIP, Katie.

About feet, I was told that the plantar ligament weakens with age and doesn't conform as well to the high arch. Don't know about flat feet. Yeah, I can walk, but it hurts. I have orthotics, which help a bit, although they're not cushiony, and I got some Dr. Scholl's sports gel inserts which really help a lot. Thx for the advice n sympathy, Donna and Kazoo.

I'm basically gonna stay off it as much as poss, do gentle stretches, maybe some ibuprofen.

I've damaged other tendons before, the real problem is that they are extremely dense tissue, so there're very few blood vessels, so healing takes a *looooong* time. And it hurts in the meantime.

I might try some meditation, it does help with pain management, and the development of patience.

Lisicki still battling, broke Serena's serve to claw her way back into the set. 3rd set tied 4-4. Is it my imagination, or is Serena a bit of a "bad sport"?

Slopey - sorry to hear about the pup. do you recommend any books or web sites that aid in meditation?

I've always had flat feet and foot problems. In elementary school I had to wear lace up shoes when all my friends got to wear penny loafers - it was very upsetting. Then in my early 20's, my feet hurt so bad when skiiing that I had surgery on each foot. It was something analogous to tarsal tunnel in the hand. Cast to the knee. I bet today it could be done outpatient with no cast! The dr was the dr for the Dallas Cowboys and could be seen on the sidelines when the games were televised.

stoops, I recommend a good class. Good instruction for getting you going. the one that worked for me (so far) was at the Shambhala center in Chelsea. Their meditation style and instructions are really gentle and leave you very little to worry about in terms of whether you are doing it right, and you can take the class as often as you want and even get some one-to-one help after you've tried it a while. Don't let the name fool you, there is not much of a religious/spiritual overlay, though the meditation style is derived largely from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The class I took was taught by an older white guy wearing chinos and a short sleeve shirt. No robes, no chanting, no shaved heads. Zen meditation is more intense, and meditation in the yoga tradition usually involves mantras and concentration on certain objects, thoughts or sounds. Mindfulness is a lighter, easier practice. it is also much less goal-oriented than visualization. Those are different practices with much different purposes.

I occasionally go to a meditation session at a yoga place on Dekalb the last block before FG Park. It's supposed to be every Mon and Fri from 8 to 9. Here's the description:
Shamatha meditation is about learning how to calmly abide in the present moment, meeting what arises within and around you with clarity, ease and intensity. There are no visualizations with shamatha and guidance is given in each session to assist meditators in finding an optimal balance of stable attention & open awareness of their inner and outer experience. As a result of earnest and regular practice, insights dawn both on and off the cushion.
Monday and Friday mornings.
8-8:40 sitting | 8:40-9:00 Q&A [the actual sitting is about half an hour]
$1-$20 suggested donation

The instructor/leader is excellent, very accommodating to various beliefs/nonbeliefs. However he has a busy schedule out of town for the summer and often cancels (like this morning). Someone told me he'll be back on the 12th.

Notification issued on 7/1/13 at 1:08 PM. The National Weather Service has

Syria may not be oil country but potential for regional war which could effect the oil production delivery. Although no news on syria to influence price of oil recently. Eqypt is unknown outcome and investors don't like uncertainty anywhere in region.

A wealthy Upper East Side couple are suing the Cathedral School of St. John the Divine for $415K after they say the school got them to bid on a 30-by-30-inch finger painting by a classroom of kindergartners, rigged the auction, and stuck them with a $50K bill for it. And this very well may be the epitome of rich people problems.

According to the Post, socialite Michelle Heinemann and her investment-banker husband Jon say in the lawsuit that their son, Hudson Cornelius Heinemann, was “underappreciated” there. “Plaintiff’s son was consistently left out of school exhibits and films...and was made to go last at nearly everything,” the lawsuit states.

Even more ghastly, “On one occasion, plaintiffs’ 5-year-old son was relegated to the role of ‘door-holder’ and ordered to hold the door for all of the other students.” Look, if the Heinemanns wanted their kid to "build humility," they'd have sent him to The Avenues.
School administrators allegedly promised to cease all door-holding labors for young Hudson Cornelius if the Heinemann's gave some donations (including $6K worth of “designer clothing items” to the auction) and if “renowned artist” Michelle Heinemann helped Hudson’s class create a sellable work of art for the auction.

The Heinemanns agreed to put in the winning bid for the finished finger painting for $3K, but they claim the school had a first-grade teacher named “Ms. Bryant” drive the bid up to “the outrageous sum of $50,000.” So the Heinemanns have since pulled Hudson out of the school, and are now demanding compensation for all of the attending costs, including $20,000 tuition to a new school, forfeited class fees for his little sister Hyacinth Cornelia, and Hudson’s $60,000-a-year chauffeur.

LP seems right, right? Quick search tells me LP for late stages of renal failure. So should be lower in phosphorus and proteins. Might mean I can serve her the birthday cheeseburger after all!

I guess you'll have to wait for YOUR birthday (+ 3 weeks)! I think it came from Myrtle Ave.

Right! Plus, if she likes it so much, maybe it's what her body was actually needing. When is her birthday?
