Gack. Today's morning meeting was a meditation meeting. They closed the door and the shades and the lights and then it was darkness and silence. I do NOT know how to meditate and I don't normally ever give myself those kinds of moments of silence. That's what sleep is for! I was really REALLY uncomfortable and counting seconds in my head. It felt like an eternity. I tried to focus my mind on finding Julie Chen Fish today.

I always hated those moments of silence/reflection, etc. Do people really think that everyone appreciates that concept.
Often I am glad that they stop talking...but doesn't mean I want to bow my head and pretend to be having spiritual feelings.

My neighbor has taken to calling me "Gatsby" - i never read dat book but i'm just gonna take it as "baller"

"Gatsby is the aloof, enigmatic host of the unbelievably opulent parties thrown every week at his mansion. He appears surrounded by spectacular luxury, courted by powerful men and beautiful women. He is the subject of a whirlwind of gossip throughout New York and is already a kind of legendary celebrity before he is ever introduced ... ... Gatsby’s background and the source of his wealth is a mystery ... As a result, the reader’s first, distant impressions of Gatsby strike quite a different note from that of the lovesick, naive young man who emerges during the later part of the novel."

Plus I have a tendency to squirm in my seat a lot and constantly change positions. The seats are pretty ghetto in most of the rooms and they are squeaky and they are very uncomfortable. I'd be so much happier if everyone just sat on the floor.

Yeah really. I have no desire to numb my brain, I did that with alcohol, why would I want to do that with meditation? I like the constant sparks in my brain. I'm just relearning to love those sparks again, why would I want to stop it with meditation? absurd.

A Panama hat (toquilla straw hat) is a traditional brimmed straw hat of Ecuadorian origin. Traditionally, hats were made from the plaited leaves of the Carludovica palmata plant, known locally as the toquilla palm or jipijapa palm,[1] although it is a palm-like plant rather than a true palm.

Panama hats are light-colored, lightweight, and breathable, and often worn as accessories to summer-weight suits, such as those made of linen or silk. Beginning around the turn of the 20th century, panamas began to be associated with the seaside and tropical locales.

The hat known today as the Panama hat was produced in Ecuador as early as the seventeenth century.[citation needed]
Straw hats woven in Ecuador, like many other 19th and early 20th century South American goods, were shipped first to the Isthmus of Panama before sailing for their destinations in Asia, the rest of the Americas and Europe, subsequently acquiring a name that reflected their point of international sale, "Panama hats", rather than their place of domestic origin.[3] The term was being used by at least 1834.[1]

Theodore Roosevelt visiting the Panama Canal construction site in 1904, pictured wearing a Panama hat
The popularity of the hats was increased in the mid-nineteenth century by the miners of the California Gold Rush, who frequently traveled to California via the Isthmus of Panama. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt of the United States visited the construction site of the Panama Canal, and was photographed wearing a Panama hat, which further increased the hats' popularity. The hats were later worn by many early-twentieth century film stars during films.[citation needed]

The Ecuadorian national hero and emblematic figure Eloy Alfaro helped finance his liberal revolution of Ecuador in the late nineteenth century through the export of Panama hats.[citation needed]

About the early comments on meditation, I was recommended to try meditation and I went to a Zen temple in the village. There is a way to do it the zen way. Basically you sit on a pillow for about a half an hour and do nothing. At some point you get up and sort of stamp you feet as you file around the room then go back to sitting some more. No moving, scratching, shifting around.

It is HARD to do. Never have I been so unbearably itchy in my life. Another strange reaction was that my eyes geared up and -- sorry if TMI -- my nose started to run. I was told that these reactions represented release of tension from the body.

It was really strange.

Never had venison osso bucco. Never seen it on a menu. Aren't the legs really too skinny for that cut? I get veal osso bucco most of the time.

Venison loin is most popular cut. I've never cooked it at home. It's one of those things that I think Ic ould never do as well as a restaurant. But, I used to think that about duck breast and I've mastered them.

Bard or bind w/ bacon, dibs.
The Empty Mirror by Janwillem van der Wetering is an amusing take on a westerner trying to do Zen. When people have suggested I try meditating I respond that, if I were the kind of person who could think peaceful thoughts in the midst of chaos I wouldn't need meditation.

So the boat started up right away, as it always does. Headed out and was running it full throttle for about a half a mile and it just stopped dead and wouldn't start. Wouldn't even cough. That never happens. It always starts right on a dime. Gotta be something simple but had to have it towed back to the marina. I joined BoatsUSA yesterday for $180 for a year of umlimited service so I was glad I did. It's like AAA for the water. Continuing to put money into it is getting annoying. Up until now it's given me 7 prob;em free years.

No, I never wrap them in bacon. I don't even tie them...just let them start to fall apart after 3 hours and you know they are done. The only real seasonings I add to the braising liquid are juniper berries and anchovies after the usual carrots, celery, onion, tomato paste.

Next time we get rain -- I'll have to get ladder and go up to that roof.
Looks threatening now -- maybe get some shortly.

I've never heard of that either. Everywhere I have worked covered all family members and all preconditions. Yes, adding family member does cost extra but $500 for a spouse seems excessive.

So Snappy convinced me to buy Crystal Light as a beverage. I was at the supermarket and they had Martini, Mojito, and Appletini flavors, so I bought the Appletini and Martini ones (mojitos are disgusting). Part of me feels like it's sorta sketch to buy such flavors.. ? I mean it's not like I am going to put vodka in them, so I don't really see the problem. It's mad hot out and I can only consume so much iced coffee (ive been drinking close to like 4 iced coffees a day, plus my 3-4 cups of hot coffee).

Anyone read that book Unorthodox? Sort of memoir or woman who grew up in williamsburg as satmar. Eventually broke away and left after marrying and having child. I think she is mid-20's now - still living in NYC.

Maybe there is a nice movie to entertain you while your body comes down from all that medication, Snappy. Do you have Netflix? I have discovered the dark side of that; I watch these Brit shows which I love. Mostly Mysteries. Masterpiece Mystery (watched pretty much everything) and recently Touch of Frost (a great Brit cop show). Another one I recommend is Doc Martin, a hilarious series about a brilliant, brusque, surgeon with ZERO bedside manner who suddenly develops a fear of blood. He has to quit surgery and becomes a NHS general practitioner in a seaside fishing town in England taking care of a group of people as eccentric as he is. Very good. Really funny.

Pete RW Knudsen is 100% cranberry juice and it is bitter as hell. My mother poured a full glass for one of the young ones a while ago from a jar I left over there. The kid spit it out and my mother brought it back to the store for a refund. She didn't know that you are supposed to mix it with something like water. I make it weak but you can add a little stevia for sweetness or something else. This is the bottle. It is now about 7.99 but that goes a long way.

If you want hot and dry, go to Central Texas (Austin or San Antonio), or even better New Mexico or Arizona.
Southern California is also good choice, although the humidity goes up in the Winter.
June 24, 2013 8:37 PM - Deleted
Uh.. DC is built on a swamp and is muggy and gross as hell. BAD suggestion, M4L.

June 24, 2013 8:37 PM - More4Less
arkady, you might be right about DC - the swamp thing is big driver of humidity. Richmond is hotter than NYC but I like it a lot. N Carolina is most definitely dry, hot, and commute to work via car.
June 24, 2013 8:37 PM - etson
DC had evil humidity over half the times I have been there.
Denver is a fun / pleasant town with low humidity. Helps to drive there but not essential for absolutely everything.

can't work from home on this job...have to get into a secure server accessed by one of those ridic 'pano' thingies. can't do that from home.

n.m. - hate the architecture and landscape. i'd be depressed :-( maybe just a city with cleaner air than nyc will be a good start.

I am home and relaxing and am going to sleep early tonight. I had a busy day and very little sleep last night. I don't have anything to do tonight (except watch Netflix) and I am feeling pretty decompressed.

Does that count as good news??

"The landmarked building has an Art Deco lobby, live in super, guaranteed free storage, play/community room and bike storage for a small fee" Who knows, maybe they'll start 'storing' the Citibikes as well.

Apt is decent relative value actually but spiral staircase is a bit of a turn off.

Steep for a non-doorman building I agree.
Would be slightly below avg for Manhattan full service on a psf basis. Most FS 2 bed / 2 bath / 1200ish sq ft places there seem to be in the $2000-$3000 range.
2 beds in my PS building have maintenance around $1700 (8am - 11pm doorman, live in super, smallish self-amortizing underlying mortgage)

June 24, 2013 9:37 PM - petebklyn
looks satanic to me
June 24, 2013 9:37 PM - etson
Thanks m4l.
Like the location but would not want a ground floor place. Somewhere similar but a bit smaller and less work to do would be good.
But I keep changing my mind anyway. Even looked at listings for a couple of houses in PLG today! (but my head tells me I prob could not deal with a house)
June 24, 2013 9:42 PM - petebklyn
dealing with renovation for fancier doorman coop bldg sounds lot more difficult than house to me. Or at least way more expensive.
Even with this silly 70's garden apt on LI -- everything is a hassle. A single/2 family house in NYC -- can pretty much do whatever you want.
June 24, 2013 9:43 PM - pepper
oooo, pete, does the new LI place have a garden? That's sweet. Sounds nice!
June 24, 2013 9:45 PM - More4Less
etson, I can do the renov for you. you aint that picky and you have ability to write the checks. it would only take 4 months to get everything done from start to finish.
June 24, 2013 9:46 PM - Deleted
I was saving Newport boxes to make something out of them. I did eventually throw them all out. Which was really embarrassing actually to dispose of that many (that was like less than 1/4 of them) cigarette packs.

June 24, 2013 9:47 PM - petebklyn
no garden. I call garden apt complex -- those 2 story complexes. built as rentals in 60's and 70's.
scroll down to bottom to see what looks like. Some people have small patios but not us.
http://kingswoodowners.com/
June 24, 2013 9:47 PM - etson
Yeah, reno takes longer but good building people can be a massive help in recommending contractors & keeping them in line, taking deliveries etc.
If I had a house I would have to line up a good bunch of contractors & tradespeople and bribe them to be on call. I would not even know which signs to look for to see if something was wrong or would be freaking out over stuff that wasn't a big deal.

Moonface = Generic white person with very miniscule amount of cultural or intellectual capital. Phoney. Rent raisers. Vapid colonialism. Born too far from oceans as to be unable to develop a basic or barely functional sense of cluefullness. Reinventors of the wheel, over and over and OVER again like a billyclub to the back of the head of society.
