Mortgage applications up 5% last month evwen as rates move to 15 month high. That high is still only 4.15% for a 30 year. The housing bubble will continue to be strong at rates like that. For the many people who have experienced 7%+ mortgage rates throughout their lives, these low rates seem to be spurring purchases of second homes.

I had a ride to Kennedy from a Sudanese cab driver. He talked straight without a breath until North Conduit Ave - what was a kind of sermon about peace love happiness and how a true Muslim does a, b and C. He was nice but it was not interactive and it was 6:30 am for fucks sake.

Two days sober. I was released from intake yesterday after spending 24 hours waiting in lobbies, etc. I got a TON of counseling. Seen many doctors. Apparently my health is good condition, as well as mental health. unfortunately they failed to mention this detox was out of network So i've been drying out on my own.

I was going to go back to work today, but I am going to meetings today/tonight. Will be going back to work tomorrow. I'm having a little bit of a hard time typing, kinda shakey but mentally havent had this clarity in quite some time.

This is going to be hard for most people to believe, but I truly no longer have any desire for alcohol. Like NONE. It takes about three days for the physical symptoms to go away, so hopefully I am ready to get back to work tomorrow. There's a gazillion meetings in soho and in brooklyn. Even lunch meetings and early morning which I'll be attending. I'm really thankful I got this second chance in life. I'll make it work.

There's outpatient therapy, hopefilly IN network. thanks for the support, Hope you continue to support me with this, but I feel mentally stronger than I have in my life, EVER. Finished the Small Book, damn that book changed my life. If the person who left it on my stoop only knew.

I was supposed to get the 6:30 am flight from JFK. Which is nuts really for non-work stuff. I woke up to a terrible racket at 5:30 am, the alarm after about 4 snooze pushes, So I missed the flight and went to the airport when I got it together to go standby for the 10 am flight, which I am on.

I am going to Tampa - my family is north of that on the West Coast - sister in Crystal River and parents slightly east of her. I got a car which cost 7 dollars a day. It probably has a hole in the floor so you can push it along with your feet.
June 12, 2013 9:05 AM - rf
Rob, call your medical insurance company and ask them what kind of support they have for recovering alcoholics. It can't hurt to know your options.

But yes, it's great that you are determined to succeed. You'll find great AA meetings, I am sure.
June 12, 2013 9:06 AM - Deleted
Well I am not really doing it on my own, I have two doctors, a counselor, and will be attending AA meetings, a really supportive coworker.. A few days of feeling slightly uncomfortable is nothing compared to what the beast made me feel (even when he made me feel good, I was doing bad things, saying bad things etc).

My friendship with Krazy is going on the back burner for now. Other than that, I don't really have anyone in my life who will want to sabatoge it for me. The Beast will of course, but I am loaded (not that kind of loaded) with a huge arsenal now. Plus all the counselors and doctors the last few days have been really helpful. I'm actually really glad none of them wanted to put me on any medications. That's a good sign.

FYI: I can't tell you how many people I encountered the last two days who smelled like poop and pee :-/ Becoming that is not an option for me. It will be though if I take a first drink.

About the cab driver, these Muslim guys always ask about your marital status. I could saynothing. Being single makes you disreputable somehow. I sense fair game for getting hit on. I am not a young woman but they still go through this routine. If I talk (and I really dont want to) I am married and have three children, grown with the last one finishing an engineering program. It is kind of fun lying.

Rob, don't worry about Krazy. Your attitude is exactly right. You need to get support and encouragement only right now. Whatever happens about Krazy will be good and right for you. Some choice moments from the Q&A at Beacon HS parent orientation last night:

Q. Does Beacon have a school-based leadership team and what role does it play?
A. Yes, there's a school-based leadership team as required by the DOE and yes it does have a role to play. A small one. Next?
PA Chair: Your days of opening milk cartons and baking brownies are over. We need you to write checks, host house parties, and if anyone is a wiz with quickbooks, let me know.
Grade coordinator: If your child took the Algebra I regents and passed, but not easily, DOE regulations require that we offer him a seat in Geometry, but i urge you to have a loooong family talk about enrolling in Algebra I for 9th grade instead.
Principal: Tell me what you remember about high schools:
Parents (calling out): A really good English teacher . . . homework . . . the library . . . [silence]
principal: Really?? That's it?
Parents: umm, drugs . . . Girls . . . a really good philosophy course . . . getting really trashed . . .
Principal: Good, so now I know you understand that this is high school and I don't have to mention these things.

Overall message -- this is a school that has its curriculum and management shit together, does its own thing, your kid will have a great experience but don't expect a lot of democracy or input.

June 12, 2013 10:20 AM - Slopefarm
rf, they do their own assessment, though I think that is mostly to figure out what to do with the private school kids. They are not into regents exams, perdiod, at Beacon and would probably not be guided by regents' guidelines. They said (paraphrase): "We go at our own pace and it's pretty advanced, and the math classes are coordinated and sequenced with the science curriculum. Our Algebra I curriculum is a strong foundation for everything else we do in math and science. that said, some kids who have had Algebra I in 8th grade are really ready for the geometry curriculum and some are not. I'm suggesting that if your kid is anywhere near the borderline on this, you really think about it."

Which meeting would be better for me tonight. the two options are

Clinton-Carroll Mens Big Book
199 carroll street between court and clinton 730 pm

or Crown Heights, St. Francis High
673 President Street between 6th and 7th ave 8pm

? I think the president one is much easier to just walk to. I'm not familiar with downtown brooklyn.

I am a little bit afraid of what it's going to be like to go back to work tomorrow. I don't want to be judged either negatively or over positively or a big deal made or silen contempt. But I realize that's the last thing I should care about right now.

Diploma is not a "regents" diploma. Not sure of the arrangement by which they are able to do performance-based evaluation in lieu of regents.

School is selective and most kids go on to good colleges, so no one really cares about regents. If you care about regents, you don't list Beacon as a choice.

Hey, 6, Murrow tour was pretty funny, too.

"Let me be clear: Kids who are in an arts program and who enroll in MSTAR have no lunch period. So we have two kinds of kids: grazers and lunchtime eaters. the grazers snack between periods as they walk to their next class. An apple after second period, a sandwich after third, some cookies after fourth, etc. Lunch eaters need to get permission from a teacher to eat in class. I have instructed all my teachers to allow this and most do. The kids just need to learn to eat quickly, in a quiet, nondisruptive way."

6 -- while we liked Murrow a lot, she said one skeevy thing in that meeting. She said "if you are putting Murrow first, send me an email." It was clear they were going to look at that in ranking applicants for the computer match. The other schools we saw said they do not see student rankings and they rank the applicants based solely on their criteria.

Interesting, Slopey - that's the sort of thing you tell a really determined parent in private but don't announce to the world at large. She was imported by the last principal from Staten Island and never really understood what Murrow is all about. Now that there's a new principal (himself a product of "Old Murrow") she's out of the loop. She was never popular with staff and I think she'll be looking for another job soon. Good riddance.

For Dona and anyone else who has been hoping I find a new printer. Yes, yes, I know, but they have my money and still need to make good on our agreement. Today's emails:

Me: Good morning Printer's Rep Girl, and thank you. I do understand that you are trying to help but we are not getting anywhere.

Perhaps you need to seek advice from someone in your company? People often write on business cards. Paper is natural absorbent. I don't understand the problem. Would you suggest that I call your offices and speak with someone else? With whom should I speak?

Printer's Rep Girl: Okay, well, let’s do this, my boss had one of our cards that was printed on 14pt, uncoated stock, so would you like me to order this for you? I tested, it’s absorbent, and you can use sharpie, ink pencil, etc. What do you think?

Me: Yes, please. Thank you Printer's Rep Girl.

Ok maybe I need to clarify. I have nothing against cyclists Six. In fact my hostility to the bikification of NY has to do with safety. I am hyper alert and careful to the point of distress and I sincerely believe that there are too many variables to control to make biking safe. This is independent of the fact that so many cyclists don't follow rules.

Eva, I am so sorry. Every time my dad has gone into the hospital, I just feel the burden weighing down on me and I am sure you feel the same. It is so depressing to feel alone that way.

When my dad was in the hospital last September or October (a few weeks before Sandy) for his surgery on his vertebrae, my brother, who lives in Manhattan, came to visit him at North Shore Hospital for the first time in 3 years, a couple of days after his major surgery, at age 89. He wanted my dad to apologize for something. They had had a huge fight three years before and my dad and stepmother (who was in much better shape there) must have called him 100 times to apologize; my brother never even talked to him. He just dumped everything in my lap and I had to figure out all the stuff with my dad's bank, paying bills, insurance, etc. My dad's heart was broken. Three years later, my dad didn't even remember exactly what he was supposed to apologize for, and he told my brother that he did what he thought was right at the time. After that, my brother said he was through with my dad, and my dad wrote him out of his will.

Tough stuff. I can only imagine what a burden it's been for you and your daughter.

I do have one cousin who really thrives on chaos and she's been writing to me and calling. I had to tell her, "Don't you dare make Juan your new mission to depression. There's no negativity allowed in my house". She tried and tried to break me, but I'm very bendy. :-)

Enjoy your dinner and the rest of your birthday.

I used to look at big families with envy, as there were not too many of us to begin with, and for many reasons, we didn't connect all that often. But the more I hear these stories, the more I'm glad there aren't more of us. As it is, the only two sets of cousins I have, I haven't spoken to in over 30 years. I don't even know where they are, or what they look like, or if they have families, which I'm sure at most of them do. Since my brother and I never really knew them all that well, ever, we don't miss them. But it would be nice to connect with family. Maybe.

Hi everyone,

the attitude of your step daughters is unfortunate and truly aggravating.
It does seem to be evident in many families where there are those who post all day about different causes they're taking up and pseudo-philosophical meanderings about being a better person.

These are the same individuals who couldn't be asked to make a phone call when you're in a dire situation or offer any type of assistance beyond; "oh,that's too bad."

Not to get too detailed, but a while back mrs.legion had a serious bout of illness which involved a hospitalization. At the same time I was working and the kids were not in school yet. Did anyone bother to assist with babysitting or anything else?
Very little.

I've also been taking the lead on most of my dad's health issues with his alzheimer's, for three years now.
it was only after the hurricane that other family members decided to step up and help.

June 12, 2013 2:49 PM - Legion
I read about the Harbor Freight store opening up.
I agree that they are useful at times. Their tools are of the cheapest quality, that is for sure.
I bought a couple of hand clamps and tried them out on a wood working project I was doing in my garage.

When I applied a good amount of pressure I suddenly found that I had
the strength of the Incredible Hulk as I could bend these metal clamps with ease.

You know what I like to do dibs?
I'll stop by yard sales and flea markets and buy old American made tools,
the kind they don't make much anymore.
From places like Utica, Buffalo and Pittsburg. They have their maker and date drop-forged right on them.
I give them a good wire brushing, a coat of oil and they're back in action in no time.

Why pay $20 for a rust magnet foreign made wrench when you can pick up a stainless steel one for 2 dollars at
a yard sale and it's good for another 100 years.

There's a good place to find tools in this big old warehouse in Bushwick. It's on Starr Street.
I recently bought good quality aluminum garden trowels there.

Retains the moisture inside and tastes better in my opinion.

I do indirect chicken 2 ways on the Weber - gas. Split the chick, season & lightly oil. Lay skin-side up on oiled rack in a broiling pan & cook for 8 minutes on high heat. Flip & do for another 8 minutes. Alternately, heat the grill, turn down the middle flame, lay chick skin-down on center of grill for 6 minutes, flip & cook another 6.

You can regulate Weber to constant temp so you don't have to monitor closely. Sear the outside of the roast, turn down the heat (lowest where the roast is but also either side) & just check temp every 5 minutes or so w/o opening the grill until you're sure it's settled. The exterior thermometer is very accurate.

maybe - i added too much liquid i think so it didn't turn out crispy. i would try it again but it's a pain in the ass to get a chicken butchered properly for it and ends up costing more than it costs to go there and have it made for you - hahaha.

i haven't ordered the chicken there in ages.

I just went out and checked. The entire block of 5th between garfield and carroll is blocked off for a suspicious package on the subway bench! I saw people looking at that an hour and a half ago. I was wondering what they were looking at, but it looked like a yogurt cup or juice box. It's still sitting on the bench!

Keep in mind greenwald didn't actually say any of what king accuses.

“I’m talking about Greenwald,” King said. “Greenwald, not only did he disclose this information, he has said that he has names of CIA agents and assets around the world and is threatening to disclose that. The last time that was done in this country, we saw the CIA station chief murdered in Greece. No right is absolute and even the press has certain restrictions. I think it should be very targeted, very selective and a rare exception. In this case, when you have someone to disclose secrets like this and threatens to release more, then that to me — yes, there has to be legal action should be taken against him. This is a very unusual case with life and death implications for Americans.”

Read more:
June 12, 2013 8:28 PM - etson
Oh, no much as I dislike the sound of Greenwald he shouldn't be prosecuted for this. Snowden should be ,obviously.

If Greenwald were to disclose the names of CIA agents then he should be, but that is just hypothetical.

Peter King was a terrorist supporter anyway (IRA), hence why I would never vote for him.

Perhaps less outside the NE (e.g. Pittsburgh and Fort Worth Episcopal dioceses are very traditional on the issue)

etson, I grew up Episcopalian and knew quite a few gay priests - both male and female... the females tended to be less forthcoming about it, since they already had the obvious "problem" of being female, which was (and i suppose still is) accepted to varying degrees in parishes...

will do rob!
June 12, 2013 9:16 PM - More4Less
Randi, still am thinking Heat gonna win. although I'm rooting for the spurs
June 12, 2013 9:24 PM - lechacal
Everything is relative. Nothing matters. Hello humans.
June 12, 2013 9:33 PM - kazootite
No need for this blog then, lechecal.

Oh Kanye
June 12, 2013 10:09 PM - Deleted
Dh that Kanye article is so silly. Guy makes good tunes but what a darsche.
June 12, 2013 10:13 PM - Deleted
Yah. I have to remember not to pay attention to him unless he's making music
June 12, 2013 10:13 PM - pepper
Hey six! I think the OT can handle more than one dramatic event at a time. Plus, if I may dare to speak for all (or at least most) of us, we are already invested in the ABCDE saga, so hit us up (nh) with the latest goings-on with A!!
June 12, 2013 10:25 PM - pepper
i don't know his music, and i couldn't even be bothered to finish that article/interview... self-important mega-douche is what i got out of what i did read... he's so authentic :o\

rf: are you back from dinner already? hope it was great!
June 12, 2013 10:28 PM - etson
The ABCDE thing confuses me.
My take: Everyone thought A was a B because she seemed to be leading 6 on. E is just creepy. C and D sit in the wrong place at the wrong time to unwittingly aid his douchiness...
Who knows, maybe in the next installment E will turn H and hook up with a G. His excuse will that he was fooled by a very talented CD.

Oh abcde drama - make move on A next time you're both tipsy at sycamore. If she isn't welcoming just stop talking to her. e doesn't really factor in.
June 12, 2013 10:30 PM - Arkady
Or maybe A will have gone into treatment & had a renaissance.

I have no problem with the Kanye interview - quite like him & think his music is OK. Think professionals in all fields should be confident in themselves.
He was dead wrong about that Single Ladies video though. Thought it was mediocre / a bit boring and all the angles were wrong.
June 12, 2013 10:43 PM - Donatella
The acceptance of actively gay clergy and the ordination of women have prompted more conservative Episcopalian priests (many married with children) into the Catholic Church where they have been ordained as Catholic priests. So there ARE married Catholic priests.

Just getting home... That's great, rob!, keep an eye out for beginner's meetings.

Don't know where you are during the day, but I can def recommend NYU lunchtime meeting in manhattan. Does not stand for New York University. Great mix, young n old, beginners n oldtimers, men n women, gay n straight, very relaxed and varied...

"Now You Understand", or more affectionately "Now You're Unemployed"

People tend to come and go as their job situations change, allowing or disallowing them the ability to attend during lunchtime.

Well,sleepy, night all
June 12, 2013 10:46 PM - Donatella
Rob congratulations on you success. Keep going.

Good night, everyone.

Good night, birthday girl.
June 12, 2013 11:15 PM - etson
Are the < and > arms or boobs?

Thought this was a great video simple concept but super well executed

Still think Prodigy Smack my b'ch up was one of the best videos ever for originality / adrenalin / shock value

June 12, 2013 11:17 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Good night, rf, hope it was a lovely birthday! : )
June 12, 2013 11:20 PM - petebklyn

"Prodigy Smack my b'ch up"

I thought you were a God fearing conservative boy, Etson. Tsk, Tsk. :)
June 12, 2013 11:21 PM - Partridge
Oh shit, Pete. Ring and inflammation too? Mine looks fine so far.
June 12, 2013 11:22 PM - petebklyn

June 12, 2013 11:24 PM - petebklyn
g'night all.
June 12, 2013 11:25 PM - Partridge
Hmm. So, if Lesbi is doing the antiB's without ring, should I get to my doctor?
June 12, 2013 11:27 PM - etson
I am, but also a child / young adult of 1990's Britain!

June 12, 2013 11:29 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Patient is doing better, prolly going to rehab later this week. Thanks for asking, it's been a rough road of late.

Yeah smack my bitch up is a cool video.
June 12, 2013 11:32 PM - Partridge
Ah, the yin-yang of Etson.
June 12, 2013 11:32 PM - pepper
Well, that sounds like the right direction, Cobble. Hope you are holding up. And the patient's sib? how's that going? i recall last time they let their own matters slide...
June 12, 2013 11:38 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Yes, a better direction, however temporary it may be. I'm ok, very tired, work is hoppin' on top of everything. Hmm, not exactly, but they're needing a lot af looking after. Sib is just getting frail and understandably tired.
June 12, 2013 11:56 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Ok, I'm off to sleep...G'nite, PLUSAs...
June 13, 2013 12:10 AM - BoerumHillScott
Fuck! 95% asleep and dropped my phone in my water cup. I heard that the putting it in rice is the best way to get the water out and hopefully save the phone. I will see in the morning.
June 13, 2013 12:19 AM - pepper
Remove battery and put both in rice! fuck!
