I have the day off work today, so not sure what I am doing up so early.

Last night, our hosting provider had issues.
They are pissing me off more and more. Good thing I was planning on switching providers in the next month or so anyway.

dh, they haven't shown Serena yet, but I suspect it's as muscularly awesome as it's always been.

BTW, my english neighbor saw me smoking a cigarette outside, and remarked that I was having a "crafty fag". Just sayin'....

Azarenka/Sharapova tied 1-1 in first set. Athletic bodies, but no bootay comparison whatsoever... Serena still reigns supreme. Oh, Hi Snaps.

Hate to interrupt the play by play, but I'm on the internet doing some research on a site that has old newspapers from all over NY state. Some of the print on these papers is blobby and hard to read, so sometimes the search results come back with all kinds of misreadings and errors. I just found this one:

"...Order of the Eastern Star, will meet this evening In Arcanum hall. '""Albert G. Crawford will lecture on "Folk Bongs of France ..."

Someone, I think it was six, found an article by this guy about Troy, where he lives, and we were discussing it. I took issue with some of his comments. I guess, months later, he felt the need to see if anyone had linked to him, thereby finding us. I know on Brownstoner, if someone links to an article, a notice is sent to us that someone has done so, so maybe his program does the same.

Woah, there is a lot of bespoke furniture in there. Some of it is quite cool. I like the really long couch in the LR, the bookcases, and the sofa in the library room. I also like the rugs. But it's all too over designed, and too precious. If you put a couple of people in those shots, it would totally ruin everything. But rooms are supposed to be FOR people to live in, not look at like an art installation.

Good afternoon. I came home last night after an extremely long day on Long Island, and by the time I got to the computer, the site was down. Ugh, ugh, ugh. I really needed to complain!

Rob, my brother, who had a liver transplant (hep c leading to liver cancer, not sure how he got it but probably long ago before his 21st birthday; he's now 57) stopped drinking as soon as he was diagnosed but the damage was done. He then had a pretty serious drug habit. He found AA and/or NA groups that were specifically for atheists (which he is) and agnostics. If you want info, I can ask him. One group was especially helpful while he was waiting in NY for his transplant, afterward, and whenever he was in NYC for surgery for metasteses 18 months and 30 months post-transplant. As far as I know, he's a non-drinker and non-drug-user now.

Yes, Kazoo, the abcde woman. Dona, she's unemployed and doesn't have many friends (bad news, I agree). I'll be over her pretty quickly though - just wish she didn't live in the 'hood where I'll run into her a lot. Time for some rebound online dating or something.

I got tickets for all kinds of reasons but mostly it was due to pushing my luck. I quit doing that except for a few things. For example often I go to st Charles Borremeo Church in Brooklyn Heights on Sunday. It is 7 pm on Sunday. Cops rarely ticket outside churches on Sunday. Another of one of those unwritten rules. So I do that and so far so good. R never gets tickets because he never pushes his luck. He wouldn't even park outside of St Charles when he went there with me once.

The other day I drove into Manhattan to do something on the West West side 55th near Alvin Ailey building. I parked on the street, bought my little muni ticket, put it on the dashboard and was getting out of my car when a young guy said to me to watch out because at 4pm, the cops came out and they towed cars from my spot. It was minutes to 4. I read the sign again and I had completely missed the part where parking there was legal on that day but that there was no parking 4pm onwards. I really appreciated his telling me. What luck. I would have been freaking out and had to fork over 400 dollars or so. He said he worked there and saw it everyday.

My sister went to Costa Rica on the Pacific with her husband. She said that her husband wanted to do stuff like surf and boat over there but that he had a low sense of adventure. She decided to work on him and dragged him on zip lines. She went on 13 zip lines which did different things, the last time she was hanging upside down flying across. Also she went rappelling off the sides of trees. This is the one who killed mating grasshoppers. I am going down to see her and my parents next week.

I find that driving into Manhattan on weekends is just awful. Weekdays, not so bad.

Yesterday I spent (too) many hours on Long Island (doctor's appt. for my dad, various store parking lots) and there was a ton of parking-lot rage--lots of drivers cursing out lots of other drivers. I just can't imagine that kind of rising blood pressure about a parking spot, at least not unless there was actual damage to a car and/or pedestrian. Jeez louise, would you scream like that in front of your mother? In front of your child? Life is too short!

I drive into Manhattan now only when I know I will get parking or that it will save me a lot of time. Part of this bikification of New York City is the active discrimination against cars. All the pedestrian plazas, curb lips, bike lanes and bike racks means less parking as well as the profoundly aggravating business of trying not to hit armies of jackasses riding around on bikes.

For instance, if you time it right, you can park on the street for Lincoln Center at exactly 7 pm, when the rules change. If you are doing something late, it is better to drive in than to deal with the gunslinging assholes on Fulton Street after 1 am associated with getting the C train.

True, if you are only using it in the city, dibs. I drive to PA and Staten Island regularly. Staten Island by public transportation is ugly. You could go to Florida in the time it takes to get the subway to the ferry to the Staten Island Rapid Transit and then the BUS. Car Services in Staten Island hire the deranged and the cars are wrecks. I have family and friends all over the Metropolitan area so I drive a fair amount outside the city. My insurance is 113 dollars a month and gas is... well, gas. That's it for the hooptie which is parked on the street.

"Cheaper to take car service taxis than own a car. Much cheaper."

not really. i could drive to work and park in a lot here for $200 a month (not 24hr just day access). a car service to and from work is $25 so $50/day or $1000 a month. cheaper to own a car.

I am not especially talking about parking--many of my trips are picking up-dropping off kid. Plus often I can stay in the car at a hydrant and she goes in and does what needs to be done.

What I mean that, bikes notwithstanding since they are everywhere at all times, people who drive into and around Manhattan are much more efficient drivers than weekend Manhattan drivers. They tend to be more aggressive but they know how to protect themselves from moron drivers--not so much on the weekend. Although there's much more street parking on the weekend and especially on Sunday because it's free, there is much more demand too.

Weekends in Chinatown are totally whacko. Much easier during the week. Been there, done that!

When I worked for my last home furnishings company, I was in charge of the company car, a Jeep Cherokee. I had to drive from our offices in Noho to the garment center, and/or to our store on 59th street near the Queensboro bridge practically every day. And also many trips to my boss' apt on the Upper West Side. I became a really good Manhattan driver. I also became an expert at parking a commercial vehicle in the garment center. That was not easy. The Doctor I am supposed to see on Monday morning does not take insurance. One of the doctors I saw yesterday told me not to worry about that. ?! I'm scrambling to find good doctors or a good match of some sort, decided to go to DOCS today, left work a little early, but the wait time wound up being insane so I left.

I did find out one good bit of info this morning. My HIV test came back negative. I've been sorta terrified the last 5 years after breaking up with my ex that I had it. He wound up contracting it from being a cheater right before we broke up. I'm not exactly sure I never went for a test after finding out.

I think I freaked my grandmother out, or perhaps didn't freak her. She treated it so non-chanlantly telling me that all I need to do is drink Iced Tea. I don't understand how I went from butt doctor visit in chelsea to infectious disease floor (!) on the UES to then being told that I need to see a psychiatrist because there's so many underlying issues going on with me.

I am going to use two of my vacation days sometime soon (hopefully sooner rather than later) and check into a 4 day detox. I am so terrified I am going to get fired over all of this shit. I have a Dr. Appointment on Monday morning, then again one on Wednesday morning.

Will not do the AA thing. I will do the rational recovery group sessions if I can find any, I don't know how popular those are, but the book I am reading about RR right now is amazing and it's way more up my alley about how to deal with this issue.

I am terrified of being judged improperly for getting the help I need. I like posting about this here, I guess I shouldn't give a crap who reads any of it. Both doctors yesterday told me they found my honesty a good thing. There's just this constant thought in the back of my head that I am being foolish doing all this. OH yes, you know, the "beast" as they call it in RR is probably the one saying that.

It's to prevent having a seizure, really. Weirdly, the RR book I am reading claims that seizures don't exist unless you are drinking 24/7 LITERALLY. Most doctors seem to disagree. I did 4 day detox years and years ago at Beth Israel (or maybe St. Vincents?) It was pretty aweful. I was the only one there not for drug-related dependency. I did wind up crying my eyes out in the smoking room on the day of my release because a number of people there kinda tried to protect me from the bitches who would go around at meal time and demand people's dessert lol. That's not the kind of detox I want to go to though, but will probably have to anyway.

Ideally, I would love to go to Passages in Malibu. But I think it's like 200,000 dollars :( But that's for a whole month I believe. I don't think Kickstarter lets you beg for money for things like that, though I wish it did!

rob, make sure you know ALL the costs before you use a doctor who does not accept your insurance. It will be very expensive and likely cause you an immense amount of anxiety when you get the bill. But that won't be the case in the near future as a consequence of Obamacare.

An imaginary anal wart may have saved my life. Now I have to run with it and be an adult. Shit happens for a reason in this Universe.

Yes. I have to make sure all the doctors, so far they all have, take my insurance. Otherwise I would be screwed. The doctor yesterday told me they are making an exception for me and not to worry about it. Um, ? That can't possibly be correct, can it? This is a Psychiatrist who I am seeing next week. To put me on meds for underlying issues... I don't know, what's the point of that if really all I want to do is get help for my drinking problem? I'd rather go the route of a hospital that has a detox center and then after care. I don't want to get tangled up in psychiatric drugs. Personally, I don't think I need them. I could be totally wrong about this though, but trusting my instinct. I just wanted to get sober, and then maybe afterwards deal with that if need be? Doctors love pushing drugs on people. Drugs are the last thing I need. I am not suicidal (they asked me that OVER AND OVER). I don't really feel depressed at all, ever. I love laughing at life! And I can get my shit done all the time. I also think I have a firm grasp on reality (shut up). I think it's best for me to just get my drinking under control (i.e. stop completely) and not have to focus on psychiatric medications. Focus on my health, focus on just being who I am without the drink... not tied down in some psychotropic disaster area.

"Girl, 11, Saves 3-Year-Old Brother By Throwing Him Out of Burning Home"

BROOKLYN — A quick-thinking sixth-grader, stuck on a broken fire escape outside her burning home, made a desperate decision Thursday morning that saved her 3-year-old brother's life.

As smoke and heat belched from the building behind her, Janixia Soto, 11, dropped the toddler two floors into the arms of good Samaritans below.

Yeah Arkady, it's been like that for weeks now. News is finally getting out though. Apparently the DOB, Fire Dept, DOH, and one other dept came at once, shut the place down, asked everyone for ID and so on. Obviously there are inspections at any establishment but this was like a coordinated assault. Totally ridiculous in that prior inspections should have picked up on these issues (ie lack of egress from the basement where live music is played, and lack of permit for drinking in the garden) and they shut the garden down right at the beginning of summer. I heard that Washington Commons faced a similar attack a few weeks ago. The owner was apparently tipped off, called the bartenders and ordered them to close the bar, clear out all the customers, and not charge them for any drinks. But that's secondhand news so don't necessarily take my word for it.

It wasn't a colonoscopy! It was anal warts which I had in 2003 and apprarently again 2007 which I totally didn't even remember. They were sorta up there, it's not like they were dangling on my butthole though (gross, you see that in porn sometimes, especially amateur porn where it's like omg dude go to the doctor! or sometimes it's a chick with a big ass wart on her ass). Guh-ROSS. I just thought I felt something up there when I was taking a bubble bath and thought to get a check up. I guess well worth it. Dave, if you are going to poopoo (no pun intended) everything I try to make right in my life with this issue, then please PLEASE don't respond to any of my posts. The good news is that I don't want to die. I never thought of suicide, exactly, but I've been slowly killing myself for years now. It will only get worse from here if I don't actually do something about it. I know, sometimes people love a good trainwreck, but I don't wanna be that.

Speaking of train wrecks, did you see Michael Jackson's 15 year old daughter tried to OD on pills because she didn't want to go on trial? :( She's adorable! I hope the best for her.

Snappy, I am SO sorry I totally threw your previous attempt to help me under the bus. Personally, at the time I wasn't ready, and I was a little apprehensive about getting help from a friend and not feeling it within me. Taking the first step had to literally come from within me and I needed to just do it on my own, which shockingly all happened yesterday out of no where, but it was building up for a few months now.

The Beast said a lot of nasty shit to a lot of really nice people. I ruined a LOT of relationships (not just on this board) over the last few years. Always thinking, well ugh that's THEIR problem not mine! :-/

That's not true, Randi.

My mind boggled when you actually decided to meet up with people who you have been talking to on here for years (and coin the term for us losers). I would have gone out, but seriously, recently I've been having to re-evaluate things like "going out" or to bars. I have a tendency to get messy, VERY messy. So stopping myself from putting myself in that kind of situation was a stepping stone to where I am right now.

Ugh, I just don't want to turn into one of those preachy ass people who hate on people who go out to bars and happy hours to drink :-/ That's one of my biggest fears (which is absurd cuz it should be one of my smallest fears). Actually, perhaps my grandmother's advice about "just drink Iced Tea" makes sense in that situation. I don't want to be a social leper, but I feel like EVERYONE DRINKS.

In my situation though I would always have to drink just to go out drinking :-/ I guess that's called pre-gaming, but like seriously, thinking about it rationally it's very bizarre. Like, let's go see a movie, or go to a concert, or an art exhibit.... *DERP* and then not remembing what one experienced? Pay 13 dollars for a movie only to black out and come out being like um, yeah the only thing I remember is the opening credits and the bathroom 8 times. :-/ That shit ain't right in the head. I can't do that anymore.

Great news, Rob. You are on a very good and important road. Try to remain focused on the final outcome and not get flustered by any perceived stupidity of the medical facilities, or professionals. You may find some dopes along the way who waste your time or give you bad advice or screw around with your insurance. Don't let them fuck with your plan -- meaning -- keep your eyes on the road, don't look back and watch out for the potholes.

I tend to agree with you that you should be chary of drugs. Only consider them after a good vetting and agreement by a trusted professional. I hope your internist (once you find one), becomes your most valued doctor. Their role is often to see the forest while the specialist focus on the trees.

Sincerely, I wish you the very best of luck! And if you want to see what support looks like, stick around with us here. This group has been waiting to help you for years. You understand now why you never quit us, right?

It is a pipe dream and an example of false religion. All of this was shoved on people and I was never on board. Nor will I ever be on board. I can't wait to see Jeanette Sadik Kahn out of her job and while preserving our cities tax base is crucial, keeping crime low (and empowering police), maintaining city services and schools, I would love to see all of this shit ripped out on the list of things to do for the next mayor. In the meantime, I would have a quota for tickets for bike scofflaws with the aim to discourage all but the most disciplined bike riders off the roads and into parks and back onto the subways.

Khan is the granddaughter of Imam Alimjan Idris, a Nazi collaborator and principle teacher at an SS school for Imams under Hitler’s Mufti, Haj Amin al-Husseini. The bio of his son, Wall Street executive Orhan Sadik-Khan, frequently mentions the bombing of the family home in Dresden and surviving trying times after World War II. It neglects to mention that the times were only trying because their side was losing...
In partial revenge, Khan has made many New York streets nearly as impassable as those of her grandfather’s wartime Dresden. Bike lanes have turned two lane streets into one lane streets. Infidels sit in their cars and honk while bike lanes go unused..."

I have nothing against it, and I am sure you probably <3 it, but to ban low slung pants seems to be a bit hypocritical, especially for BEACH areas!

I am going to go ahead and give myself props right now. I didn't give a shit about showing my junk to multiple people yesterday. The first doctor was like, you have the option to have these two medical students be in the room or not. I was like oh hell who cares let them be here. I feel like back in the day I would have opted for them not to be in the room. I figured it was not about perversion but just people learning and stuff.

I did sorta bug out a bit at the second doctor because I couldn't find my underwear and was like omg where's my underwear and kept looking all over for the it and someone was like we hung it on the door. How I casually reached over and pulled them on my person without fainting I do not know.

...or more exactly, what the attendings told me to go and do.

This involved the old "bend over" and the glove snapping.

E-Hug, Legion. I still don't know WHAT that animal is that you always post!

Snappy, do you still have fish? I texted my roommate asking him if him and his bofo will feed my fish while I am gone. Do you think it's better to just let them do it or just get those little thingies that time release food for 7 days? When Pinky Dinky used to be at work I would put them in her tank, but I feel like they don't really get fed, or more worried they might eat too much?

I am curious what I can take to detox with me... Like, I know I can't take one of my fish (though that would be awesome). Last time I was able to check in my journal only to have people on the floor constantly being all like you're always writing all the time. (I think I wrote close to 100 pages of journal entries in those 4 days). I also refused to wear those things they make people put on their feet. I chose to wore my own socks. Sadly it was the same pair of black socks for four straight days, but I didn't like the little blue thingies people wore, they were ugly.

I really want to go to a high class place this time. I want a giant swimming pool versus a narsty smoking room with a giant fan and food that isn't the same thing people with free lunch tickets in school ate. Also I want to stop drinking coffee before I go because ugh, the only thing that was available, was coffee... non stop. All that coffee can drive you crazy. I'm not even a coffee snob, but the coffee was AWFUL.

Basically, I want to go to a classy joint and not be surrounded by crackheads.

" She looks happy, probably doesn't make that much money, but she looks happy. I want that."

Exactly. She must be happy.
That's what I would be too with my own Wombat farm.
I would really love to raise them and have a herd of them. Unfortunately, I'd have to move to Australia to do it.

I guess that's why a lot of people have those Llama farms here in the states. Same idea.
Be happy with the animals.

snappy,

Legion, neighbor upstairs left faucet on (elder peeps tend to do this a lot when water is shut off; think it's their way to know when water is turned back on) during the water shut down. either not home or sleeping, water overflowed when water turned back on. have a few water bubble spots on the ceiling - had to pop them to drain the water out (maintenance will fix in a few weeks; just have to buy paint for them to ensure it matches paint used on rest of ceiling).

No Dona, you misunderstood the comment. It was not intended to be funny because as you read, when I called him out on it, he immediately said that he didn't much like my constant bullying.

He thought my comment to Rob about getting a weekend job was an attempt at bullying Rob, which it wasn't. Rob's comment back to me indicated that Rob and I agreed with that idea. It had been something that Rob and I had discussed before. DCB did not wait for Rob's response to me before he smacked me with the insult. He was not trying to be funny. He was trying to be rude. I called him on it and accepted his apology even though it didn't feel heartfelt as it was accompanied with another insult.

During the whole banning discussions of last year, it was made clear that the OT would not have rules of conduct but instead would self regulate via communication. When others cross a line with others here, they let them know. That's what I did.

quote, earlier in the day:

I drive into Manhattan now only when I know I will get parking or that it will save me a lot of time. Part of this bikification of New York City is the active discrimination against cars. All the pedestrian plazas, curb lips, bike lanes and bike racks means less parking as well as the profoundly aggravating business of trying not to hit armies of jackasses riding around on bikes.

For instance, if you time it right, you can park on the street for Lincoln Center at exactly 7 pm, when the rules change. If you are doing something late, it is better to drive in than to deal with the gunslinging assholes on Fulton Street after 1 am associated with getting the C train.
end quote

Donatella, you know I love you, but 1) half the obstacles you cited above are for PEDESTRIANS, not bike riders, and 2) I find it hard to believe that you could use that Lincoln Center trick after 6:15-6:30. Many, many years ago (many decades!), I used to do that on Washington Square for a class at NYU, and even then the sitters in the car waiting for 7 p.m. filled all available spaces by 6:30.

Geometrically more people are killed and maimed by out-of-control automobiles in NYC, and I am sure you know that it would be hard to get a ticket for speeding, cutting off pedestrians in crosswalks, running red lights, etc., etc.. You once mentioned that someone near and dear to you couldn't figure out that he wasn't supposed to drive in a very clearly marked bike lane. In my humble opinion, that's someone who shouldn't be driving in Manhattan or many places in Brooklyn with bike lanes. I am a slower and better driver for having to watch for bikes.

I know you have your reasons for hating bikes, but I don't think you are objective.

In this case, I have to finish this awful project and can't procrastinate any longer.

Those are my views rf. I think the bikification of NYC is bad policy because I think it is dangerous. I also simply don't like it. Also, I think pedestrians have a rough time in NYC too. I can see you disagree about bikes. Re Lincoln Center, I have done that and it works.

There's only one rule among friends in Bangkok: If you make plans to get together for dinner and someone doesn't show because they booked another activity, you don't get all bent out of shape over it.

That and NEVER GO TO A BAR ON THE SECOND FLOOR.

What happens in 2nd floor bars?
June 6, 2013 9:35 PM - Donatella

I have a theory about the What. Actually it is a hunch only. I was looking at the tenants of 470 Vanderbilt ave, the large building near me that now houses the HRA, among other agencies. There are some businesses in there and there was a posting about one company which provided web services for local businesses (the What's business). The website said that the owner (no name listed - forgot the name of the company) thanked all of his clients in the area but that he was moving to Baltimore area. I have this crazy idea that he moved. He was so sudden and final about closing his account it occurred to me that he might have moved. And when I saw that announcement I wondered if that was him.
June 6, 2013 9:36 PM - dibs
Depends on the hotel but most nice hotels will hassle you, unless you are paying for an expensive room. Expensive is relative though.

They do it because morons blame the hotel and make a scene when they didn't use good judgement and the girl stole his money as he fell asleep.
