I might play my guitar.

I might go to Manhattan, to some other place than Union Sq.

Good morning. I have a tiring but great weekend.
I put together my son's birthday party on Saturday afternoon (90% by myself), went to a friend's graduation party Saturday night, ran a 4 mile race Sunday morning, went to another party Sunday afternoon, went to Ikea and purchased for my son's bed, then got it home and swapped it in.

Hopefully work will be restful today.

It seems to be that brief interlude from the crushing despair of modern labour, when one is left drained and stunned, attempting to ignore the impending return of the raw nerve agony associated with democratic free-market competition for goods and services, frequently refered to as "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Inalienable? Apparently not....

A possible causitive agent for the phenomenal decay of our once competent public education system, and the elevation of the "business model" to gospel-like status for evaluating all human endeavor?

I am not so sure about the often mentioned decay in our educational system.

Based on anecdotal evidence, the glorified educational system of the past seemed to be wonderful if you were white, middle class, and had no learning disabilities. Otherwise, you were encouraged to drop out as soon a possible to give people who met those criteria more resources.

The system of today is far from perfect, but it is also trying to do deal with a much greater range of students than the past.

CGar, are you around? My mom chimed in on dumplingate. She spells it knaydl, knaydlach is plural, and says transliterations and pronunciations vary incredibly. I'm taking that as the last word on the topic -- Yiddish was the primary language in her home when she was growing up. Now, when some yeshivadicher wins the bee by spelling "mulligatawny" . . .

Yeah, CGar, my mom's a pretty good authority on this stuff. She grew up in kind of a low income, high culture Yiddishkeit household. Typical shabbos (never shabbat) dinner would involve literary or political discussions in Yiddish (subject could be Yiddish lit or other, like Dickens or Dostoyevsky) and her dad, the son of a rabbi, was a bit of an arkadian stickler for Yiddish grammar (such as it was). And don't get my grandma started on I.B. Singer ("a pornographer, don't read that filth" I can hear her yelling from the grave). Unfortunately, my dad grew up in a household with no Yiddish (his mom was born in the Bronx and his dad was born into a relatively afluent family in ukraine that spoke Russian), so there was really no Yiddish in my house growing up.

"Probably an issue that thelease is up and rent too expensive"

Also, I noticed months ago that the 2nd floor tenant above Pacific Green had vacated, and there was a "for rent" sign in the upstairs window, so prolly a good chance for landlord to get one tenant for entire building. Also, I couldn't imagine that the old Beastly Bite space was big enough for J. Crew. Can GAP on Court Street be far behind???

I made the mistake of not getting a second opinion and am now suffering from it - over 14 months after my surgery with this quack. (Yes, quack.) Dr. ****'s skill is poor, at best. Though his knowledge may be accurate, his skill with the laser is TERRIBLE. My current physician says that Dr. **** is like a bull in a china shop - treating my condition as if he were going after a mouse with a nuclear weapon. I did NOT need the extension surgery that I had. Additionally, another friend of mine, 2.5 years after his surgery with Dr. ******, is still not back to normal. My rectum and anus may never be the same as a result of his botched surgery. GET A SECOND OPINION - though I highly recommend you DO NOT visit this doctor.

No, been up since 7; I only sleep in on the weekend. I had fun coming to work in the rain with my suitcase covered in a garbage bag. Took the F which wasn't bad at all - I only had to let 1 train pass before I get on - 3 or 4 is not atypical. Which is why I usually opt for the longer walk to and from the 4/5... Then I had a conference call with a very difficult client; it will be a miracle if they ever repay us... Only then did I have time to catch up on my daily internet surfing...

Speaking of social rules, I have a question I will pose later in the day or maybe tomorrow. But I have to run - my mom is leaving town tomorrow and turning 70 on Wednesday. Where's she traveling with friends? Istanbul and then Germany. Not the best time to be in Istanbul but she's with a tour group so I'm sure she'll be safe although her hotel is right near the protests. A fellow grad student is staying right now in the same area and had to evacuate her hotel room because of tear gas floating in from the street.

If you're JEWish, nothing from Fiddler counts as a show tune towards GOTD. Same way goyim can quote Jesus Christ Superstar without winning GOTD (and I suppose an actual Buddhist could get away with the King and I, but only from the Theraveda branch of Buddhism; if you're into zen or Tibetan Buddhism, you quote that show at your peril).

Ok, here's the aforementioned bar etiquette question. A bit long and complex, but here goes:

A and B are sitting at the bar. C and D are sitting near them, so there's a square of people. A and C are female, B and D are male. Clearly A and B are together, and C and D are together. Everyone is hanging out and having a good time. B likes A but A just wants to be friends, which B is fine with.

Then E enters and walks over to sit directly behind A but not in the square. They clearly know each other, as E (male) starts caressing A gently on the back even though A is still talking to B, C, and D. E doesn't introduce himself or even acknowledge anyone else.

In that situation, what is your opinion of E?
June 3, 2013 1:45 PM - Deleted
price on the COTD day over >>>>>>>> is crazy. might be 2000sqft but 1000 if it is in the basement. but its 2 blocks from the water taxi!!! LOL.

CGar- it blew my broom away :(

Part- It was the most terrifying thing I have ever seen. Then the cell phone rang with an emergency message to get to shelter and all I could do is freak out about my cats. I told MM to get to the basement but I ran back upstairs to get them into carriers. The trees out back were bent nearly parallel to the ground- we're talking maples maybe 50 feet high. The water was a solid gray wall- I couldn't even see my neighbor's house next door it was so intense. Luckily I couldn't also hear that freight train sound but MM did.
June 3, 2013 1:47 PM - bxgrl

June 3, 2013 1:48 PM - CGar
Well, E was rude for not introducing himself and saying hello to everyone, but if A isn't into B, and B is okay with that, and A is into E, and A is okay with E caressing her back, it doesn't bother me. But, still rude not to say hello.
June 3, 2013 1:49 PM - Slopefarm

June 3, 2013 1:50 PM - Arkady

June 3, 2013 1:52 PM - Slopefarm

June 3, 2013 1:55 PM - sixyearsandcounting
A felt really awkward and talked alternately to E and the others. C and D thought it was a good time to leave as it was really strange, leaving A, B, and E there, which was even more awkward.

June 3, 2013 1:59 PM - CGar
A, B and E should've just had a threesome and been done with it.
June 3, 2013 2:04 PM - Donatella
Probably A had some level of interest in E, which made it awkward for her, but E is rude and was acting in a proprietary manner. One wonders what was going on with A. It would have been entirely appropriate to brush E off or to introduce E to the group. "The man caressing my back is E." E was clearly rude, bordering assaholic. B, self-effacing. And A has difficulty in asserting herself, probably indecisive and by default, chooses the wrong men.

June 3, 2013 2:17 PM - Partridge
A wants E and has had E but felt awkward having B see that. E is a douche. B is a nice guy for not punching E out. Sorry, Six!
June 3, 2013 2:26 PM - bxgrl
Surprised why B didn't say anything? Or A did not bother to introduce E. I think A and E are carrying on behind the scenes and E decided to be a dick and establish his territory. A didn't seem bothered by that, nor inclined to introduce or include E, which leads me to thinks A was ok with E coming out and being a dick. in which case B should run as fast as he can. On the other hand, if E turns out to be her brother or father- B should run even faster. :)

So yes, I'm B, and A and I have been hanging out for awhile. I expressed interest, she declined as she's in no place in her life right now for a relationship, but I can deal with that. She didn't tell me about E until E walked into the bar and acted like a douche (I asked because I just wanted to make sure it wasn't my own feelings getting in the way of rational analysis). I told her she should have told me about E when she declined me, and I shouldn't have to find out that way, and btw E is an asshole. She said I didn't have enough info to make that last judgement, that it's not an Official Relationship and therefore she wasn't obligated to tell me (to which I said: it's a common courtesy).
June 3, 2013 2:33 PM - Donatella

June 3, 2013 2:34 PM - dibs

June 3, 2013 2:35 PM - Donatella

June 3, 2013 2:36 PM - sixyearsandcounting
The denouement of the evening was that she introduced us and felt so awkward that she went outside to smoke. I followed her out and he followed me. But then he left. She and I spent the rest of the night drinking, she gushed out about how she's had very few real friends in her life, and I walked her home at 6:30 am when she could barely walk on her own (the second time this has happened in two weeks).

The next night (Saturday) she came over, we talked it through (sort of) and then went to Sycamore. E showed up again and same thing - didn't say hi to me. Just tapped her on the shoulder and sat at the bar. I was like, really? Are you fucking kidding? After we actually met? Then she and I got in a fight (at least the music was loud), she went to talk to him, and I left.
June 3, 2013 2:42 PM - Slopefarm
Your problem is not with E, but with A. You are not trying to be friends with E.

June 3, 2013 2:46 PM - sixyearsandcounting
Thanks Dona @2:35. And re your 2:33, yesterday was very rough. Luckily when I got home Saturday evening, a good friend was online (she lives in Beirut), talked me through it, and told me to hang out with other people all day yesterday, which I did.

I sent her an email yesterday and we met up to talk things through. At some level, she just doesn't get it. She interprets "extending common courtesies to other people" as a form of "seeking approval from others" and thinks I'm too caught up in conventional standards. At least, that's how I interpret it.

She said I didn't have enough info to make a judgement about E but she didn't share anything more, so I stood by my judgement with the proviso that I could revise it if I got more info. She wasn't forthcoming because she was afraid I would judge her.
June 3, 2013 2:47 PM - sixyearsandcounting

Six, I like to think that in this situation, if I were B and I wanted to be A's friend, I would tell her that I think she's not doing herself any favors with this guy and that I really like her as a friend and can't watch her pursuing a self-destructive relationship. Of course that may not be what I would really do, and I understand how difficult that could be. If A (or B) were my kid, I might start looking for a therapist. No one loves a doormat; a lesson learned, alas.

I had a boss in KC. She grew up on a farm and drove like a maniac. She tailgated cars leaving 3 or 4 feet behind car in front. Truly a white-knuckle experience. She started driving at 11 she said.

etson, my Stutz is RHD (right hand drive), as were all cars bak in the teens. Not even sure I should even bothering signals.

Also, young people and women don't know the rules of the road when you pass a speed trap on the opposite side: You flash your high beems to oncoming drivers to alert them.

People who pull out into the fast lane in front of you AND THEN SLOW DOWN.

Also, most drivers nowadays think it's their right to pull in front of you with very little room to do so.
June 3, 2013 4:14 PM - etson
The speed traps were always in the same places when I use to drive up to CT every day. Knew when to slow down after you had done each route a couple of times.
NYS and Westchester cops were quite zealous. NYPD would rarely stop anyone even though they were there, CT also seemed more laid back.

I started driving very young - feet barely reached the pedals - and was an average driver. Now I hate to drive - don't trust my depth perception. Like Etson, I hate driving on long unlit strips. That's the way most of the road was between Dallas and where I grew up. I always feared there would be a surprise ahead that I wouldn't see in time. Most people there really like driving in that environment, though.

I think Alien is a masterpiece of cinema on several levels.
Defining the Sci-Fi Horror genre.
Creating an entire world out of H.R. Giger's vision and a film that understood how suspense could propel a story forward with each frame.
The story is fascinating and the creature unforgettable.
Visually, it is a stunning piece of cinematography which still stands true today.
Superb work by Ridley Scott and his Cinematographer, Derek Vanlint.

...hard to believe it was made in 1979

Yow, loved the directors cut! Watched it this afternoon. It has all the bits I remember from the theatrical release that didn't make it into the "vanilla" DVD release plus some more!

Oddly enough, Aliens was a favorite movie of my daughter when she was 5. She loved the "Newt" character. Later on, when Newt was found dead in the first scene of Aliens 3, my daughter just turned it off, completely uninterested in persuing the rest of the movie.

BTW, E definitely manners-challenged. A didn't do that great either. C and D seemed appropriate.

One of my favorite sayings: "The living dead don't NEED to do word problems!"

Randi, thanks. I don't know who lives there now, although I could look it up on Property Shark. Whoever they are they have money, the place is impeccable.

Alien was super scary, and good. I watched it with a guy I had a crush on, and took the opportunity to bury my face in his shoulder whenever possible. I wasn't THAT scared. Wonder what ever happened to him?

I liked Aliens 2, Sigourney kicked butt. Of course, all black people (2) dead in the first five minutes on the planet.

I absolutely HATED 3. It's the only one I've only seen once.

Four was ok, but nowhere near 1 or 2.

Seeing the alien come out of John Hurt's chest was a great science fiction/horror moment. Tres scary and disgusting. Repeated ad nauseum in all kinds of movies ever since.
June 3, 2013 7:51 PM - BirdnestHead
Oooh, did you think it was Alien? No, Aliens, or Alien 2.

Admittedly, Alien was a much better movie, Aliens really more of an action shoot-em-up with sci-fi effects.

I did think it would be great to see Alien again, I haven't seen that since it was in theatres.

But I can't deny my shallow, instant gratification side, that enjoys Aliens so much.

"I know it's only rock-n-roll, but I like it..."
June 3, 2013 8:03 PM - Legion
My favorite scene in Alien is when the Captain, Dallas, is forced to flush out the alien through the venting ducts.
Everything is creepy in there from the blade like sound of the spiral air locks closing to the goo he starts to find as he searches through the dark, claustrophobic tunnels.
When his assistant, who's outside, starts shouting that there's something heading towards him, it really gets your heart pounding with the sound of those clicks speeding up as the alien moves closer and he's not seeing anything.
Every time you see how it ends, it still makes you jump a little.

In 2004 there was a buying frenzy and I was getting crowded out. It made me scared since I had sold NY and bought Kansas City and let's say that spread did not work for me. I was panicking as the market was galloping away. Pissed too because the main brokers were so corrupt. It was a massive pileon and I couldn't even get close. I saw 100 properties, so much crap but I finally could price anything. I wound up finding my place on Craig's List and was able to get the place because the sellers were divorcing and fighting and you couldn't find such a wacky deal through Corcoran.

Alien scared me off horror movies forever. I went to see it with a girlfriend and her boyfriend [who happened to be a childhood friend of mine]. I was staying at girlfriend's house. The three of us went back to her house, and had a drink or two in the livingroom. Couple hours later she goes off to bed calm as can be. Boyfriend and I are still so horrified and shaken that we sit up on opposite sofas facing each other, drinking beer, and trying to calm ourselves down. 3 hours later...we're still trying to 'talk each other down off the ledge', yes, we were both that freaked out. Most of the inner part of BK seems to have fairly well defined neighborhood boundaries. Then it all seems to get fuzzy in Flatbush / Midwood / Ditmas Park, e.g. some streets are definitely in DP, but I couldn't say what the borders were, some definitions count PPS as separate from DP, South and West Midwood are north of Midwood etc.

June 3, 2013 8:39 PM - MontroseMorris
I don't like slasher/torture movies like the Saw and Hostel franchises, or Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street. Don't like possession and demon movies. I'm still very Catholic in that respect. For that matter, get totally creeped out by those movies like the Ring, or anything with people skittering up the sides of walls with their spines on backwards. Other than that.....there are a few scary ones that are good, but I'm not a big fan of the genre.

Partridge, there is a TON of construction on Nostrand right now--it is being reconfigured all the way from Satmarland (where it changes from Lee Ave. to Nostrand at Flushing Ave.) to the Belt Parkway. Right now it's just a big fat mess. Tompkins has some nice blocks by me but not so pretty otherwise Bedford and Franklin much nicer. Otherwise it's block-by-block. I would have given you a prettier route!

Where is your friend's furniture store? Several on Bedford near me.

Indeed, the brokers have extended the Clinton Hill border all the way to Cate's house almost to Broadway.

When I lived in Clinton Hill right near where DH lives now, some old timers called it Bed-Stuy. And round and round it goes!
June 3, 2013 8:48 PM - MontroseMorris
BnH, you were down by Park, right? That is Wallabout, the border of which is the north side of Myrtle.
June 3, 2013 8:50 PM - BirdnestHead
"Most of the inner part of BK seems to have fairly well defined neighborhood boundaries"

I don't know, I moved to Bklyn in 1970, and although I really didn't start "exploring" until the eighties, it seems that many of the newer neighborhood names are referring to subsets of what used to be larger regions using a single name.

I have a feeling that many of the newer names were relatively unknown outside of their immediate locales and only used by the local inhabitants.

Then there seem to be a lot of names that have been assigned to "boundary" or "interstitial" areas that really didn't have a particular name until it became neseccary to market the houses there.

And some names are just an attempt to transfer some status from one plqace to another.

Carroll Gardens West? Park Slope South? Who's kidding who here?
June 3, 2013 8:52 PM - MontroseMorris
Prospect Park South was a development established around 1899, but had it not been done, I'm sure someone would have used the name by now.
June 3, 2013 8:53 PM - etson
Yes, that's true BnH, I was meaning current usage. I have seen older maps from the 70's and 80's where all of what is now called Prospect Heights was under Crown Heights and all of Clinton Hill in BedStuy.

"Carroll Gardens West?"

Is a case of reverse discrimination. To my recollection, the areas on the other side of the BQE were always parts of the adjacent 'hoods. Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens. They are only 2 blocks wide and then you hit the natural boundary -- the water. I think it was when both of those neighborhoods got so freaking nice, they chose to disassociate with the section that was slower to improve.

DP, meeting #1 may have been spontaneous, or maybe she texted him and he showed up. Hard to say as the two of us were having a great time. I've never seen him before but that doesn't mean he's not a regular. This happened at 773, the bar on CI Ave.

Meeting #2 was probably planned between them; she came over to my apt to talk and sort things out and we walked to Sycamore together (not planned on my part). Once we had had a few drinks she told me he would be showing up shortly.
June 3, 2013 9:10 PM - bxgrl
That is some hairdo, BNH!

I wondered about that too, cobble. A must have told him. Unless he hacked her cell phone.
June 3, 2013 9:11 PM - bxgrl
Ugh, six! She's playing you both off against each other. She's an ass.
June 3, 2013 9:12 PM - etson

"Ugh, six! She's playing you both off against each other. She's an ass."

Yep, that's my take. That and the part about her being vague, not wanting to get into details. Not a friend and surely not GF material, Six.
June 3, 2013 9:14 PM - BirdnestHead
Hi LP.

Never thought of that. I guess the BQE really screwed stuff up.

Yeah, I've heard of that region referred to as part of South Brooklyn.
June 3, 2013 9:15 PM - sixyearsandcounting
I think she also can't say no (except to me the day after I kissed her, apparently) or plan ahead; she could have told me don't come to Sycamore, he'll be there. However, she was meeting a different friend, who I then met, and it was all very platonic and fun. I think E may just like showing up at 1 or 2 am and effing things up, or they may have arranged a meeting after we were already at Syc. But this is getting more speculative on my part.

Thanks dh - gotta respect the veteran opinions around here!

Etson, C and D are important to understanding the seating arrangement, which was really a key part of E's douchebaggery. If it's just me and A at the bar, where he sat made perfect sense.
June 3, 2013 9:16 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
I'm with DH, she may be just confused or whatever...but I say extract yourself from this mess.
June 3, 2013 9:17 PM - Partridge

June 3, 2013 9:21 PM - Legion
high 5 bxgrl!

I knew you'd come around to my way of thinking. ;o)

The SAW movies are mostly about gore but they are very inventive in that respect.
The first one was truly shocking at the end,
the rest were ingeniously connected back to the first film but largely about various forms of death and torture weakly underpinned by the idea of a morality play.

E may be a douche, but A is giving him whatever messages - text or otherwise, and seems to be inviting his company. And since she won't share the exact nature of their relationship, and tells you that she just wants to be friends...well, I wouldn't hang around.

"Part, if E had turned out to be a nice guy, I would be able to overlook the fact that she didn't tell me about him. Maybe not immediately but it would have been easier to deal with."

Irrelevant! You are making excuses for her. This is not E's fault, this is A's fault for not being honest with you. She was obligated to do so as she knew you were interested in her.

The moment before or after the sixth beer?

I did enjoy the Saw movies for what they were, kind of cool puzzles with gore and tension.

I think my favorite "slice n dice" random bloody cruelty (which in general are not my faves) flic might have been a pretty obscure one called "High Tension" that came out a few years ago. Truly pyschologically chilling, which is not something one usually finds in a gorefest.

E was creepy; A's an ass
June 3, 2013 9:49 PM - Partridge
Six, I really feel for you. If you bothered to spend Saturday with her, it is clear that you are invested to some degree.

She knew your feelings, she rejected your advances but wished to keep you as a friend. Well, sometimes that works out and sometimes it doesn't. You say that you were cool with it, but if that were the truth, then her involvement with another would not hurt you. The other guy, E, although a douche, is irrelevant. He is simply the magician's handkerchief -- a distraction. You deserve better. She should have treated you better. I'm sorry!
