Who was it here the other day who was heralding the employmant numbers??? more lack of understanding.

personal Income flat and consumer spending down. Employment numbers mean nothing if overall wages are down and that causes reduced spending.

The JEWess left out that he won for spelling "knaidel", which is a Yiddish word for matzo ball. It is NOT a dumpling; the Yid word for dumpling is kreplach, which we discussed when pepper was on her frolic & detour in Eastern Europe.

[Cue rf in 3-2-1 to point out some know-it-all glaring Jewish fact that I've omitted or gotten wrong.]

Perhaps if you do nothing Republicans would let the Democrats spend money to hire more teachers, you would know how to spell "employment".

"My commute has been no further than the coffee pot"

Eva, best not let Arkady catch you using "further" instead of "farther". She gets especially bitchy about certain usage errors. Heaven forfend you get her started on "bring" vs. "take".

At the risk of disagreeing with my esteemed law partner, with whom I share a largely identical cultural upbringing, and at the risk of incurring a moron cat or three, I want to point out the utter folly of using transliterated Yiddish for purposes of an English language spelling bee. What if he'd spelled it kneydel, or kneydle, or kneidl, would he have lost? I think if he's spelled it kneydlach, he'd have been awarded instant right of return by the Israeli government.

To illustrate, I typed in knaidel into two online Yiddish dictionaries and the spelling failed on each, to wit:

yiddishdictionaryonline: "Sorry, a match was not found. Please try again."
http://www.cs.uky.edu/~raphael/yiddish/dictionary.cgi: "No results found for knaidel."

I merely said there was a risk, I did not say definitively that there was disagreement. Just sensitive to the pride you seemed to have in that the winner won by spelling a Yiddish word. Of course, my grandmother would have worried that the spelling bee will call too much attention to the Jews.

The m.c. of the Bee pronounced it Kuh-naydel which invites many spellings. The winner'name looks as if he's of sub-Continent heritage. Maybe there's a prep book that specializes in the Bee words & is similar to the Scrabble Dictionary which I loathe.

CGar, we were right. It's starting already. From the comments on http://www.theatlanticwire.com/national/2013/05/knaidel-yiddish-dumpling-won-tonights-spelling-bee/65749/:

"Its not German. Its 1950s Yiddish, and that doesn't sound like a fair word for an English language spelling bee. Its not really even a word. Its NYC slang. Using NYC Jewish slang unfairly favors a NYC contestant, like the boy who "won" this rigged contest. They call lit a "National Spelling Bee" but base victory on NYC Jewish slang. Shame on the officials."

May 31, 2013 12:43 PM - Slopefarm
Agreed, CGar. it is slang and a lousy word for a spelling bee. My point is (and I think we actually agreed on this earlier): look at who is getting blamed for all this. "rigged contest" "unfairly favors a NYC contestant" -- we all know what NYC contestant is a euphemism for, even if poor Arvid doesn't look JEWish.

Didn't see your 12:40 before I posted. I do think we agree, partner. And yes, knaidelach (or kneydelach). FWIW, my grandmother took making kreplach much more seriously than knaidelach. Every september, she made a few hundred, and then we froze whatever we did not eat over the high holidays.

Waiting for the dog walker to get here so I can get ready to head to the beach. I don't want to see new dogwalker and have her think someone has been in this apartment while the dog's been in the crate. I decided to sleep in today. Will probably only be able to go to the beach for a few hours because my roommate is working late tonight so I have to get back by 6 to walk new dog. Which is fine, I have no reason to linger on the beach for that long. Plus when I sit on the beach too long, the next morning I get glaucoma. Staring in January he's on a six month sabbatical, so technically I will have no new dog duties.

My actual reason today for taking a vacation day was to scope out this new dog walker. Having strangers come into your apartment in the middle of day is just a weird feeling. Once she gets here, and then out with new dog (an hour walk) I should set up my laptop in the living room record what's going on. Eh, actually that sounds creepy so I won't do that.

Okay, time to get ready.

rob, how much does a dog walker cost?

I don't know. I know that it costs more if the dog is walked alone, like Duke was walked because apparently he "didn't get along with others" when he had his test walk years ago. He got half hour walks though, new dog gets an hour walk, but with other dogs. So there's other dogs coming into this apartment. How does that even work? I guess I will find out shortly. But really no clue how much they cost. My roommate subsidized part of Duke's walking bills. I have a flat bills (not including rent) deal. When I had duke I paid rent plus 200 dollars each month (well 100 every other week). that included gas/electric, cable/internet, and dog walking. Now I pay 100 a month (50 bux every two weeks that covers) gas/electric and cable/internet... 100 bux a month for cable/internet and gas/electric does sound awfully low to me. It's really just the two of us who technically live here.. maybe he is giving me a deal because his boyfriend stays over every night? Whatever, it's a great deal and im not complaining. But yeah so I guess I was paying 100 bux a month for Duke's dog walker...

May 31, 2013 2:47 PM - Legion
The answer is yes, we did get crazy weather all along.
I can tell you there were huge hurricanes that hit us in 1954 Donna, 1938 The Long Island Express, 1893 (the one that took out Hog Island off of the Rockaways permanently).

The scientists say that we are repeating a weather pattern exactly out of the 1950's when the Pacific was cooler than normal.

Please refrain from the "global warming" jokes.
Keep it scientific.
May 31, 2013 2:48 PM - Legion

...the scientific argument,
please note, it's not that there isn't "climate change" going on. That's always been the case.
It's like saying time change, of course the times change. The argument is whether or not carbon dioxide levels are causing it and the scientific evidence is that it obviously isn't because the "global warming" stopped about 10 years ago.
There are other forces at work of course, most importantly, the Sun which could decide to suddenly start heating us up again:

If you notice biff,
that graph from NASA on global temperature rise stops abrubtly at 2000.
...because it suddenly levels off and takes a downward trend since then.
May 31, 2013 3:09 PM - Legion
Important note,
I am by no means suggesting that we can't have a sea level rise in the future.
I'd have to be a dummy not to understand that it's happened in the past and will surely happen again.

What I'm trying to point out without subjective ideas is that we have to follow what the data is telling us.
Right now, the data says that we have stopped "heating up" while the CO2 levels have continued to rise.
This has completely gone against the Global Warming predictions for this time period we are living in now.

It obviously gives us pause as to what is exactly the driving factor in our climate.
I admit that the temperature has risen roughly 1.4 degrees Farenheit over the past 100 years.
By that same measure, we must admit that the correlation between carbon dioxide and heating has not followed the predictions.

...therefore again, look at the Sun for the answer to our weather.

I liked one of the Long Island teams much better. They came in second.

It was a really interesting event with tons of young entrepreneurs and old rich guys.

May 31, 2013 4:49 PM - dibs
" frozen juice"

May 31, 2013 4:53 PM - Legion
I think you are seeing my point now randolph.
Yes, the climate has its ups and downs. Always has.
We underwent heating of approximately 1.4 degrees over the past 100 years because of larger geophysical and solar factors that have brought about ice ages and tropical ages for billions of years.

The evidence points to the fact that the Earth will heat and cool of its own will with or without man.
Sure, CO2 can have effects, but not nearly as much as the alarmists are saying.
As far as crazy weather, it's just the same weather we've always had except that we're all acutely atuned to any weather event now from all the constant hooplah.

Proof again? Total Global Hurricane strenghth charts. We're supposed to be in the worst hurricane times ever according to certain folks, but then you look at the chart and it tells you that if anything, hurricanes across the planet as a whole are decreasing in total activity:

'the data' -- whose data? your sources? Widespread data or just one supposed study?
Have you read counterarguments to that claim -- or going to stick with the party line?

Pete,
You're doing exactly what you're accusing me of doing, politicizing this scientific data.
My sources? They're there for you to read including NOAA.

I'm trying to break the shell of non-science around you.
I'll say it again, all the scientists agree on one thing recently, that the heating trend has stopped for over 10 years now.
Please look this up.

Now, if the heating has stopped and the CO2 levels are still rising what does that tell us?
That the heating was not due to CO2 and probably due to other factors which are well known and include the Sun's own heating and cooling cycles and the Pacific Ocean Decadal Oscillation which is just a fancy term for the flow of heat in Earth's largest ocean which is cyclical (El Nino/La Nina effects).

Annoying as hell to book the flights on Delta site. Wouldn't let me end the transaction. Over and over again getting warnings in red: FAILURE TO COMPLETE this or that. Wouldn't recognize my card as a debit card. Finally I had to say it was a credit card (which it isn't), while warning me that the correct security code was incorrect. Then it would wipe away everything I entered correctly and THEN it wanted me to check a stupid box each and every time saying that I agreed to something that I had not read. I was sweating it a bit as the flights are full and I was booking 2 seats.

Anywaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, it is done. JFK-DCA-JFK $266. per person next friday thru sunday. Phew!!

"I have no idea what the truth is any more...."

Like most things pepper, I suspect that the truth actually lies somewhere in between.
Yes, we pollute the environment and should be responsible stewards of the planet. We should also understand how quickly people are quick to jump on a bandwagon and attempt to stifle scientific debate when the facts themselves are not lining up with the predictions.

I mean, how much can they go on stating that the cooling we're experiencing is due to the heating we're experiencing?
Spend the money and efforts on developing actual solar fields, geothermic and tidal energy sources. Not forming a cult of weather like Al Gore has tried to form.

May 31, 2013 5:03 PM - Legion
"Legion's posts on global warming make me think, "hmm, where is that "ignore" button?"

Case in point,

He was (and for all I know still is) a prissy, hypocritical, bombastic, self-important, lying, misogynist, megalomaniac asshole. He lost an election for chairman of our undergraduate debating society in part because he was caught in a blatant lie. That said, on one hand I think you are awesome that you know so much about your kid but on the other hand im like jeez you know too much are hyper-involved. Being hyper-involved in your children is the on the other side of the spectrum that involves abject neglect.

Oh that's right, they would not dare cuz they'd get their asses handed to them, but it's okay to say it to me. Things that make you go hmmmmm...
