From Gail Collins, one of Benson's favorites:
The acting commissioner did, indeed, get the ax on Wednesday, but the chances that the Senate is going to approve a new Internal Revenue Service commissioner are approximately as good as the odds it will include zombies under Social Security. Reid is still struggling with the nominations for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Environmental Protection Agency, which have been held up by the Republicans on the grounds that they donít really like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Environmental Protection Agency. The Labor Department appears likely to get a new leader the very second hell freezes over. Also, Republican Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri has vowed to put a hold on E.P.A. nominee Gina McCarthy until he gets a new flood-way project.

The whole ratification of nominee process has been screwed up for years, and is getting more so every year.
I think every presidential nominee shuold get a vote in front of the full Senate within a month of being nominated. That is more than enough time to dig up any dirt needed to make a case for or against.

My any historical standards, what is happening to nominees over the last decade is fucked up.

I spread blame around for the nominating issues.
I think it really started with the Democrats and Bork, but every Senate since then has made the situation worse.
The current GOP is worse than any before, but I think that is just becasue they are the current ones.
If a Republican wins in 16, I suspect the situation then will make the one today look good.

Before all of my plumbing "work" done two weeks ago, I had bought a special deal from Angie's list. Two hours of work for 89 dollars. Of course, I called that guy first when my faucet broke. And of course, he couldn't come. Anyway, I am cashing in on that today. I grilled the guy on the phone about his charges for different things and he ASSURED me that to change pipes under the sink, he was not going to charge me a lot over the flat fee for materials.

Hmmm. We'll see. The Adventure du' jour.

Scott, I was just kidding about blaming Dubya and the GOP. I just like to pre-empt dave's "everything is Obama's fault". I blame the entire Senate. And, not for the nominating mess, but for all the rest of the gridlock, I blame the entire House as well. Congress has been all but useless since statesmen like Tip O'Neill and Bob Dole left. I seem to recall the Senate really taking a turn for the worse during Trent Lott's brief tenure.

Oh and PSA.......

Don't use Liquid Plumber. Ever.

According to the plumber visiting me now, the Liquid Plumber left in the stopped up sink over night when I had that stoppage two months ago caused erosion to the pipes under the sink. There has been a leak in one of those pipes after I had the stoppage issue. Of course, I didn't notice it right away and now I have rust rings under the sink from all the cleaners which got wet from the dripping pipe.

I am told that Clorox bleach once a month down the drain is a good preventative. Of course that doesn't help with the stoppage itself. He is in his truck now; I'll have to ask what his recommendation is for actually unclogging a drain when it happens.

CGar, I agree.
I think Bob Dole's resigning from the Senate to focus on his hopeless run was a key point when things got a lot worse.

So glad I bought when I did, and glad I didn't overreach but only bought what I could afford and, in fact, cut my housing costs substantially . . . .

"The buying frenzy was on display at a March open house in Brooklyn, a borough of New York City where the median price rose 14 percent to $515,000 in the first quarter from the prior year as the number of listings plunged 45 percent, according to Douglas Elliman Real Estate and appraiser Miller Samuel Inc. Over two hours, 300 visitors streamed into a three-story brownstone in Crown Heights and it went under contract for more than the asking price less than a week later, said Barbara Brown-Allen, a Douglas Elliman agent who represents the seller.

Brooklyn Boom
The fear of losing out on mortgage rates that are close to the lowest on record is spurring the rush, Brown-Allen said. The up-and-coming Brooklyn neighborhoods of Crown Heights, Bushwick and Bedford-Stuyvesant have surged in popularity during the past year because buyers have been priced out of Manhattan and more exclusive Brooklyn neighborhoods, such as Park Slope and Cobble Hill, she said."

I know I could have gotten more for my duplex apartment as well as the other apartment here, but I really don't want to create an atmosphere where people feel borderline abused. I want a fair rent but don't want to push to the max. I live here and I think there is a tipping point where people feel ripped off and angry even though the market will bear those prices.

Dona, by any chance did you hear the Radiolab segment on tonal languages (like Chinese) and how they result in larger percentages of people with perfect pitch than intonation languages (English)? The theory being explored is now that large numbers of people have the capability of attaining perfect pitch (thou perhaps not dave) but that exposure from birth to a tonal language, where meaning depends on pitch as well as sound, develops those capabilities far more successfully.

They have done no work yet, and yet the townhouses they're building next to my building have "launched" >>>, and the asking prices are - wait for it - $1 million more apiece than originally planned, approaching the $4 million range (no doubt a premium to live next door to me and have me throw things in your garden). They will be a really nice improvement to that block, but Sam will be horrified by the year it will take to build the exterior buildings.

You think it's formal in Korea, Slopey, go to Japan. The exchange of "meishi" is a true ritual. Even moreso is the seating in a room for a meeting, with the guests literally with their "backs against the wall" as in shogun days to prevent escape.

If you are offered a seat at the side of the table it's a great honor and you need to go through an extensive thank you ritual
May 16, 2013 10:15 AM - Deleted
especially not a co-op
May 16, 2013 10:16 AM - Donatella

That makes sense, Slopey. I didn't hear that. But Japanese isn't a tonal language. It is actually pretty flat. So much of the meaning comes from the super complex grammar, also there is tremendous variety in the respect levels levels which reflect the "rankings" of people. Company president to the tea lady uses a totally different grammar than tea lady to President. There are 7 respect levels. There is also a variation on formality levels. You can speak respectfully but informally. When I went to Japan, one guy I knew said I made him feel like he needed to pull up his socks. Too formal. I hadn't learned how to adapt at that point. There is also a big divide between male and female speech.

My tutor was constantly correcting me to make me sound more ladylike.

Will randi be able to uphold the stupidity level here if you leave?????????
May 16, 2013 10:18 AM - Donatella

However, I think because of the complexity of the written language, which uses pictographs (characters), Japanese anyway have an incredible sense of design and visual sophistication. All of them are great cartographers. They need to be because the streets are so freaking hard to figure out. Nothing even remotely like a grid.

m4l, I agree that, assuming the bubble doesn't burst in the meantime, they're likely to go way over ask, or prices will continue to rise. Renderings look really nice. I'm glad that 4 of the "townhouses" will be carved out of the existing building mid-block, and only the small building on the corner will be razed. Also glad that they aren't building right up against our foundation, i.e., there's a buffer zone of open space because we have gardens on the side of our building, and there will be gardens behind the new townhouses.

Almost makes me glad I got outbid on the duplex in 2009, as I much prefer looking out and down on the construction than having it abut my back garden.

Oh and Slopey, my teacher told me to freeze my face when I spoke. Pretend it was competely immobile. And this way I would correct my sort of sing songy habit since English uses intonation for emphasis.

My tutor was Takanishi-san. He was 73 years old when I met him, an engineer and retiring from the Board of Directors of a Trading company. His hobby was languages. He spoke 5 very well. I heard him speak English once to somebody and it was surprising since I never spoke to him ever in English. I loved that man. He was the best thing by far about my Japan experience. There were times when I felt really sort of crazed trying to figure what was going on around me: in the office, with clients. "What is GOING ON HERE?" When people were behaving according to rules which didn't make sense to me. I learned so much from him. And learned how to really speak Japanese. I loved him. I really did.

I met him for 90 minutes twice a week for a couple of years.

Arkady, my kid did and does very well with Chinese tones (vocabulary not so much). She had almost 2 years of hearing them and was speaking Mandarin at toddler level when I adopted her. However she was pretty tone-deaf. She has actually improved a great deal with a lot of practice in chorus. But she'll never have perfect pitch.

Chinese is different from Japanese and Korean (both have modernized writing systems now) since each word is a character, rather than any kind of phonetics. I heard they are teaching kids pinyin (phonetic romanization of Mandarin with diacritical marks over the vowels to indicate tones) in public school in China now and it will be interesting to see if it changes how people think.

Japanese has a very complex writing system and different from Korean which is totally phonetic. Japanese DOES have two phonetic writing systems (one for pure Japanese words and other for imported words) and these systems are used together with Chinese characters. For young school children, they use the Japanese phonetic system until they learn to read the symbols. Korean on the other hand is completely phonetic.

Chinese characters are of differing complexity.

In Taiwan, the writing system from before Mao remains. Very complex.
Japanese has modified that old way of writing characters to be a little simpler.
Modern PRC has a more modified version of the characters than Japan.

All this talk of the commonalities and differences between languages somehow reminded me of this joke:

Before the war there was held a great International Esperanto Convention. It met in Geneva. Esperanto scholars, doctors of letters, learned men, came from all over the world to deliver papers on the genesis, syntax, and functionalism of Esperanto. Some spoke of the social value of an international language, others of its beauty. Every nation on earth was represented among the lecturers. All the papers were given in Esperanto. Finally the meeting was concluded, and the tired great men wandered companionably along the corridors, where at last they began to converse casually among themselves in their international language: "Nu, vos macht a yid?"

Lack of decent inventory seems to be the main problem / driver for BK real estate. Still cheaper than Manhattan when you include maintenance and the fact it's easier to leverage a house purchase than a co-op, but just not much decent stuff out there.

e.g. Looking on streeteasy for 2+ bed, 2+ bath places under $1.75mm in Brooklyn Heights returns 5 places total, 2 of which are at 1 BBP so on the edge of the neighborhood, 1 of which is in a co-op with a rocky financial history.

Just joining in.... Barbara Brown-Allen, the broker CGar quoted is a very good friend of mine. I'm glad she's getting some attention.

Congress sucks, and everything that's going on right now: the IRS, Bengazi, presidential appointment holdups, not to mention endless attacks on Roe V Wade and women's rights on a state level, are all useless wastes of taxpayer money, designed to destroy the country from within. We don't need terrorists, we've got ourselves, and I blame the Republicans for 70% of it, and the Democrats for the other 30%. Most of the Democratic bs is power positioning and their amazing ability to hold their fingers up to see which way the wind is blowing while not having spines to do what is right, yet perhaps difficult and unpopular. Most of the Republican Party has totally surrendered to the nutballs on the far right, and the rest of them are either hunkered down under the tables to see who survives, or figuring out how to get re-elected. The country is screwed. And it is NOT Obama's fault.

And Giuliani and Bloomberg hardly got rid of the homeless. Are you kidding? There are more homeless people in NYC than ever.

Previcox has worked for legiondog partridge.
It's a bit pricey as most pet meds are but it helped alleviate much of his pain.
I've weaned him off of it now since he was on it for a good six months and it can start to cause liver enzyme elevation after a while. He seems to be stable walking up and down stairs and the original pains he was obviously having have not returned as far as I can see.

Some vets are using Adequan now, it's an injectable long term arthritic joint pain reliever which helps improve the joint cartilage. It's very pricey and I'm holding off on it for now since it would require weekly visits for a month then biweekly visits to administer the injections on schedule. From what I've heard though, it works wonders.

Some of it is covered by my dog's pet insurance but not a large percentage.

Brooklyn rents are rising quickly.
My rental apartments are increasing by a good percentage as tenants move out. I don't do large increases except when I'm renting out a unit that has vacated. Then I go under market rate to get good stable tenants.

The Bushwick/Ridgewood property just got a huge Planet Fitness around the corner so you know that gentrification is moving along. Blue collar neighborhoods don't bother with fitness clubs much.

Some advice on snaking the pipes,
Lowes has a really good pipe snake ($25) which is thin enough to use in the bathtub drains and the sink drains. It's a 20 footer so it's good for most clogs. It attaches to a power drill so all you have to do is feed the drain snake into the drain and when you hit some resistance just give the drill some power to turn the snake until it powers through. Keep feeding the drain for a good 10 to 15 feet and you're sure to get to the clog. Next, you just slowly pull the snake out and it coils back into its handy black container without you having to touch it after it's back in. Wear rubber gloves and use a carpet knife to cut through any tough clinging clogs. Flush with hot water.

...you've just saved yourself a $350 Roto Rooter visit.

Not sure if she took both at the same time, but the Metacam really helped. And she didn't fight me about taking it as she did with other meds. Mixed in her food daily. We got "pill pockets" for our dog. I hadn't previously known they existed. They evidently taste so good (to dogs, not us!) that they will take their meds gladly when popped into the pill pocket.

Part -- if you are vetting vets, I heartily recommend Eric Maddon of Park Slope vets. Far for you to travel, I know, but he's seen us through one cat's cancer treatment (we lost that one about 12 years ago), and our current trio's various maladies, including a heart condition, inflammatory bowel, and, of course, the Turkish cat's paranoia (he gets psych meds -- yes snaps, he's even worse without).

You folks just don't get it that unless you're really in a hurry, train travel is NOT a waste of time! It can either be totally relaxing and mentally healing, or lots of fun meeting interesting people, or provide time to catch up on reading or watching a movie. It's like a mini-vacation.

Here's a train story with pic. I was the flower girl for my aunt's wedding (on my first birthday). they took a long train trip for the honeymoon. 9 months later my cousin Choo Choo was born.

hahaha, pwnage is in the eye of the beholder dh. I didn't change my original statement, arkady just assumed we were talking about a rotation around the sun as opposed to our rotational axis.
Unless the axis of the Earth has changed, we're still closer to the Sun in the Summer relative to the axis of our rotation.
That's why we get hot in Summer here.

Haha arkady.
If I'm on the surface of the Earth, I'm tilted closer to the Sun in relation to the Earth's rotational axis, in Summer than I am in Winter.
You are using the rotational axis of the Sun, I'm using the internal rotational axis of the Earth.

"Earth's elliptical orbit has nothing to do with seasons."
"In the winter when the Earth is at its closest point to the Sun, which astronomers call perihelion, itís only 147 million km.
And when the Earth is at its furthest point from the Sun in the summer, astronomers call this aphelion. At this point, Earth is 152 million km from the Sun."

It's the mere fact that the northern hemisphere is just TILTED towards the sun that makes Summer warmer. It doesn't have much to do with where it is on the elliptical path.

On the other hand, im like that's fucking awesome, I hope 10 more of them park in the neighborhood and drive down rents!

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA! You don't watch a lot of Springer and Maury do you... Men LOVE hearing "You are NOT the father!" they go cheering and hooting and hollering on stage! Of course times, there will be the occassional father who gets sad lol, but that's not really the norm.

In San Diego, I found myself at a Walmart every other day with Manda and Her mom. In one of them I totally thought they Punky Brewstered me and I didn't have my cell phone on my person. Nor did I know their numbers off hand, nor their address, or what kind of car we drove there in. It was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. After a good hour or running around the aisles screaming their names I had a psychic vision to wait near the front where they have those toy eggs and gumball machines. That's where they found eventually found me. After that experience I was totally paranoid and glued to their hip everytime we went anyway.

I saw a kid say he wanted ice cream near a truck once and his mother actually bent over and chided him saying "We are NOT the kind of people who eat ice cream" LOL! I am still trying to find a primary care physician to get mine done!! How is it so hard to find a primary care physician who takes new patients if you have some okay insurance!? I still have like close to 2000 dollars on my health flex card anyway, so even if they didn't take any kinds of insurance, the money on that card is to be used to losed by August 31st! My goal this year was to use that monies to get tests and set up with a regular primary care physician, etc... Instead the only place I seem to be able to make appointments at the Tribeca Skin Center Spa! They LOVE to take people in and will see you immediate, it's like a botox factory in there, but they really did wonders for my bald spot from that accident I had last summer :) They removed a mole (which they told me was actually a genital wart (except that it was on my abdomen. wtf how does a genital wart wind up there?) I told them it's most certainly NOT a gentital wart and just to remove it and they did. Actually not sure they said it was a gental wart exactly but she did say it was an STD, but then mentioned wart and genitals. I was kinda mortified. FYI I had that on my side BEFORE I ever even had sex for the first time, I honestly thought it was a cancerous mole. I still think it was just a mole, but whatever.

Im kinda snobby when it comes to doctors and dentists, but if anyone has a good suggestion for one in brooklyn I am totally up for it. I actually want to hear out of a doctor's mouth for me to tell me that I have to stop smoking, eat better, and exercise more. The most OBVIOUS things in the world are often the most lost on me for some reason; SO frustrating!

If I haven't used up my health money dollars on my HSA card by the lose it or use it date of August 31st, I think I want to get one of those full body scans. Tho I think they might go over 2000 dollars?!

Duke's close to 3000 dollars of medical bills are finally PAID OFF IN FULL (with zero interest tacked onto it) and my dentist bills are about 250 dollars away from being paid in full (but I have til like October to pay that off). I don't know HOW the fark I did it, oh wait, I started using credit cards to pay for basic things while I paid off Duke's vet and the dentist. Tho to be fair, even with 4 active credit cards, i've yet to pay any interest and have never been late on any payments. Two emergencies with high interest I pay off in full every month, the two credit cards with zero APR until March 2014 and June 2014, well, I have to start chipping those down before 2014 gets here!

Been paying mad extra on my perkins student loan and got that down to less than 2000 now :)

The federal subsidized staffords though, I don't get it. All the loans are about 3% interest, but I feel like it barely goes down... Is it one of those loans where you are paying mad interest up front, but at the end of the 10 year repayment loan period you are paying less in interest and more toward principal? FYI on that one I only pay the minimum on a graduated repayment plan of 130 a month right now on 23,000 dollars dolllars (oof). I did talk to them and they said that even with graduated repayment my highest payment will be in the last 2-3 years or so (maybe 2018, actually no 2021... cuz I only got back on payment in 2001) and my payments will be in the 400's.

I want to be debt-free SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO badly.

Jeezus Christ, you're like 20+ years removed from the ADHD generation. Put down your smartphone and pick up a book one day and get yourself outta that anti-intellectial tweetism mindset.

I prefer reading longer posts, they are well thought out, sometimes stream of conscious, and intellectual. I actually skip OVER anything less than a full paragraph because there's no substance 99 percent of the time with not a single nugget of intellectualism to dig. It's one of the reasons I get very mad (or angry!?) at punfests. One cannot be intellectual with a pun, no matter how hard one tries. If you were TRULY intellectual try sticking it into a few paragraphs, and chances are most of you punsters would FAIL!

(tho I will NOT not see a dentist that is not located in Manhattan). But that's really cuz mine is right down the block from work. then you will see the stars making up the bent handle leading into the scoop.
...when I went out just now, I could hear the ocean too,
that was nice.

Orion and his seven sisters belt/dagger are also very easy to pick out... I used to love finding him in my youth, upstate, where you can see stars. Here in the big city, all I can see is the moon....
May 16, 2013 10:42 PM - pepper
But orion and the big dipper were the extent of my constellation-finding abilities...

I always have this urge to kick sandwich boards like those on the street, especially the ones with all the lame overly done artwork in chalk (wasted talent much?) and annoying sayings.. blech.

things today that made me lol.
1.6 millions dollar painting bought at an auction at Christie's of Bea Arthur painted nude in 1991!

and people in an all glass building in Tribeca MAD as HELL that their everyday lives were documented in pictures (no faces included) from a neighbor and those pictures are now in a gallery opening this weekend hahahahah serves those wannabe fishbowl living pretentious narcissistic snobs right! I hope the artist who is doing this makes mad money! they showed a picture of the building today and most of the people put up window treatment hahahahhaah.. It's like SERIOUSLY no wants to see the insides of your apartments from the street, you get what you deserve! Now people are paying thousands of dollars for those photographs of you and you can't do a single legal thing about it. SUCK IT TRIBECANS!

In the Winter,
Orion the hunter is clear in the night sky.
First you see the straight line of stars forming his belt low on the Southern horizon early at night.
From there you need only look up a bit to see the red giant star Beetlegeuse, it actually glows red and that forms part of the shoulder.

Hi partridge,
i'm just hanging out. I've never had smoked trout,
sounds good.
May 16, 2013 10:43 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
You have to see them when it's brilliantly clear, away from the city, etson. Then you can discern the brightness and shapes more easily. And they leap out at you.
May 16, 2013 10:44 PM - Legion
Hi pepper!
Yes, Orion is always the easiest for me too.

May 16, 2013 10:45 PM - Partridge
I just went out and looked. City lights don't allow for good viewing here. Most stars are dim or invisible. The only one of note from my angle is a very bright one looking NE about half way up from the horizon. Here, it is flickering like mad. The atmosphere must be dirty.
May 16, 2013 10:47 PM - pepper
Hi Legion! Was never able to find even Beetlejuice (sp)... but still liked looking at the stars...

Yeah, I'm looking at the sky now. Even though it seems to be a clear night, can only see incoming planes (LGA? JFK? still haven't figured that out) and the moon. No stars. Moon looks close to a quarter...

This is the constellation I fall asleep to everynight on my couch in my bedroom... I tried taking a pic of them glowing in the dark, but my cheap ass camera phone couldn't be asked..

Meet the constellation in casa de Rob, Tarus Nicotinus

You are seeing LGA bound planes.

Haha *rob*
I think you would have loved where I lived in East New York,
next to my building was a five story brick building of tenements.
At night it became a real show over there. Not that I was looking all the time
but seriously, you can't miss certain things when they're in your face.

You'd see guys lifting weights looking in the mirror and feeling themselves up.
Women walking around topless with pants. With pants on! I always figured if you were going topless you had to go bottomless as well, but no.
I'm sure they looked through my windows as well but who cares after a while anyway.
People fighting, kids running wild in the hallways and throwing stuff out of stairwell windows to crash on the pavement below.
All sorts of interesting life.

Thanks, Partridge. I have always thought that was the case, but was never quite sure. I actually kind of like seeing them all lined up for touchdown. And strangely, I never fear the exhaust plume that stargazer is so fond of...

That's probably Venus partridge.
It's totally hellish on that planet,
800 degrees with permanent darkness under clouds. It rains sulfuric acid.
In the seventies NASA sent a probe in and it only managed to get one picture before it succumbed to the
terrible conditions there:

ENY, i'd rather watch someone lifting weights and ladies walking around topless than the Tribeca spottings in those fishbowl buildings. Seriously, it's chicks on yoga mats, corny ass 4000 dollar dogs, etc etc. Who wants to see that shit when they look out their window!? I like my windows in this apartment, they are along a brick wall in an a sorta alleyway, but when I decide to get busy with myself and watch some porn, I ALWAYS have respect for my neighbors and put up the japanese screen in front my my bedroom windows! I feel like these corny fishbowl people would just go at it because they want people on the street to be jealous of their 4000 dollar macs they are jackon off on or something. Just not my style, at ALL!

May 16, 2013 11:02 PM - pepper
Those uniform triangles in the lower left are pretty interesting, Legion!

or is that the probe itself?
May 16, 2013 11:03 PM - Partridge
Ha, Stargazer and his plane problems!

Yeah, the planes coming from the south are always in beautiful formation. Spaced so equally. Originating from all across the country. Love watching them.

...yeah, part of the probe pepper.

I would love to see a picture from Voyager which is out there past Pluto now.
When they first sent it out, there was a reproduction in the National Geographic magazine of the gold record which was sent out with it.
That was cool, you could play it on your record player.

It was also sent out with graphic depictions of naked human men and women.
I suppose if anything, they figured that the aliens might get horny enough to make an intergalactic booty call or something.

Reasons to buy on Amazon:

Brother laser printer toner cartridge TN-450 2600 page printing capacity - Office Max 71 dollars before tax.
Same exact item on Amazon - 43 dollars before tax.

That is crazy. I brought back the thing to Office Max today and explained why. The girl at the register said "Yeah, Amazon is the best."

Don't they realize that this spread exists?? I thought I was buying something different (better) than what I had bought on Amazon, but double checked and it was the exact same except for a 28 dollar price difference. I ordered it on Amazon and brought it back today.

Crazy.

Oddly, I got that Japanese screen from a brownstoner poster WAAAAAAAAAAAAY back in the day. She had THREE of them, and I got there too late and only got the 5 screen one. Some scrubs got there before me and took two of the other ones! I wanted ALL three!!!! Oh well. Actually, the screen is totally defaced... Paintings from me and my from my friend Krazey over the years... let me take a pic. BRB!

FYI, reading a novel right now, is it true venus turns on it's axis backwards from all the other planets!?!? I never heard that before until this novel. Will look it up I guess.

Let me go take a pic.

Legion - The moon does turn but at such a rate that its same side always faces earth. (Think about it, if it didn't turn we'd see the far side.)
Venus is retrograde - turns clockwise on its axis as opposed to every other planet in our solar system. It rotates so slowly that its day is longer than its year.

Another bi-directional co-painting. Krazey drawing Duke in Heaven/Hell and me drawing a fish (FYI, this was long before I got a fish or even knew I liked them!) Japanese Screens are crazy creepy that way. They are AMAZING to draw and paint on, it's almost fucked up the kinds of things you can discover later on from the recesses of your minds.

I didn't know that.

No Dipper for me, but I can see Venus! Your garden is south facing. You would have to be in your pool to see it!
May 16, 2013 11:42 PM - pepper
Now that the moon has set (from my vantage), I can see 2 stars, pretty much due west, on a sharp north to south diagonal from one another....

May 16, 2013 11:42 PM - Legion
That's really fascinating,
I'm reading more about the Moon now and it seems that the time it takes for it to rotate around the Earth is exactly the same time it takes for it to rotate on its own axis and that's why it appears not to rotate at all.
That's an enormous coincidence it would seem.
May 16, 2013 11:46 PM - Arkady
There've been lots of theories about it, Legion, but I don't think any is definitive. Neat, though, isn't it? Ditto Venus's backward rotation - lots of speculation.

quote:
It rotates so slowly that its day is longer than its year.

Ha! that's awesome, that is SO how I feel sometimes spinning through this life. At least when I am partaking in the the mundane and non-intellectual aspects of my day-to-day. My brain races FAST. I think trying to slow it down has a detrimental effect in the long run, even though it's actually VERY good in the short run.

Oh jeez, I think it's time to start letting my brain start racing as fast as it can get these days again. That shit is scary (for me) perhaps it's normal for most people and it's just a normal speed. I just want to paint and swim and do chores for rich people on the side for money. Is that asking too much from the Universe!?

I think all you starry starry night people are just very suggestible.

Things I've learned tonight:

-on Venus, the Sun rises in the West and sets in the East
-on the Moon, if you were to drive a moon buggy in the opposite direction of rotation and at an equal rate of speed,
somebody observing from earth would think you were completely motionless.
-a nude Bea Arthur painting is worth it's weight in gold.
