My dad and I planted a maple in our backyard, when I was a kid. It's ginormous. One dumb (new) neighbor wanted us to cut it down. Not happening.

I've got a large maple by the entrance to the house in P-Town. I dont believe i've ever seen its leaves in the Fall but my neighbor says it turns bright red.

If people can't walk up a simple flight on a long set of stairs or an escalator, and they are not disabled, too old or ill, their health insurance should be revoked. Obamacare encourages this sort of lazy, irresponsible behaviour.

The Libor issue was an isolated one, small on the global scale and really had no effect on overall markets. yes, it was wrong. Those too lazy or ignorant to do their own analysis always resort to the "rigged" argument. It sell well to the man on the street.

where I worked - LIBOR rates were important. If rigged certainly cost the taxpayers money. But when taxpayers money helps the big financials/rich guys that is okay. Only when taxpayer money helps the poor and sick is it a bad thing.

While walking to work, I managed to be rude to Mrs. C and the Champs in the Heights and Xing on the Bridge. If only I'd run into Skippy near his office, I could've scored the rudeness trifecta.
#33
May 7, 2013 9:20 AM - dibs
Christie's weight is obviously more than eating too much or not exercising. You liberal hypocrites should be less critical of those who truly have a disorder. Looks like he's addressing it the only possible way. Gastric band surgery is a last ditch effort.

Tsk, tsk

Hey DH, did you get your state refund yet? I got federal back but still waiting for state (I did file on the last day o I deserve that).

M4L, you can get nice suits for WAY cheaper. Just need to go to the outlets. I've bought DKNY and Calvin Klein suits in the two hundred range. I also bought a nice banana republic suits at the factory store for $150. Brooks Brother is obviously a nice step up from the brands I listed but you don't need to shell out that much on suits unless you're making enough to justify those purchases.

Dave, think I aced the interviews so one of the 2 should pan out. but even if not, most of the places I interviewed now seem to be monkey suit dress codes so might as well prepare for it. gonna to miss polo & khaki combo's for the summer - those were the good old days at telecom
#36
May 7, 2013 9:23 AM - Kensingtonian
I have friends at Japanese banks and they wear polos in summers. Don't think I have a single friend outside of white shoe law firms who wears a tie and suit to work, and a few work for Japanese banks.

Kens, I do have to admit one of my friends' comments about expensive suits is right one. Expensive suits are great incentive to not get too fat as not wearing 200 suits is OK but WTF if suits are 1000+. of course the fucker makes a ton of money but I do get his point

Once a person gets over a certain weight, typical calorie reduction diets don't really work very well. The body protects its fat. It is hard to exercise. Good for Christie.

We have people who occasionally wear ties here, with more frequent occurrences the higher up the management chain. I don’t think anyone wears a suit every day.
Much of the staff, and even a few managers, wear polo shirts.
I am in the back office Jersey City site. Things are a bit more formal in the New York office.

I have lots and lots to say about eating disorders, solutions, and side effects, but not now.
#50

"If rigged certainly cost the taxpayers money."

Wouldn't that depend which way they were rigged?
Most of the rigging seems to have had the effect of keeping LIBOR lower than the 'real' level, which created a loss / limited a profit for borrowers who had swapped fixed for floating but would have benefited fixed borrowers.

Suit, no tie is the convention here but I usually wear a tie anyway because I have meetings most days. Casual on Fridays.
#53
May 7, 2013 9:38 AM - dibs
We always wore suits at the Rodeo Association I worked at from 2008-2012. Even now, in retirement, I still wear a jacket. Some people are just more responsible about the way they dress and don't want to look like the Banana Republic clones walking around.
#54
May 7, 2013 9:39 AM - dibs
Etson, suit should never be worn without a tie. Sport jacket and non-matching pants (i.e. not a suit) is the only acceptable look for no tie. In a suit with no tie you just look like you forgot the tie.

Yes, DH. Ridiculous, isn't it? Many people here sport varying degrees of facial scruff here. And I'm not just talking about the women. But, apparently it's frowned upon for more senior management. I love altering my appearance for my employer, but I need the job and the health insurance so I just suck it up and try to keep a smile on my face.

Went on a date last night with a lady who has a high-ranking position in the DOE. She's only 31. At the risk of offending her I told a few good stories about how much I hate Joel Klein for what he and his minions did to Murrow. I don't understand that either. I also don't understand people who wear sunglasses in the subway. I also don't understand tourists who unfold giant subway maps on the train when they've got the seat right underneath a giant map.

I was out earlier and there was a nanny with two little kids. The nanny was wearing a HUGE pair of sun glasses with neon plastic frames. The kids each had their own pair of loud sunglasses. They were cute. Better than the mother on a scooter ahead of her two little kids also on scooters who almost ran me off the sidewalk.

i'm 35. i sent the money to ameriprise but its just sitting in the account as cash so i need to figure out how to invest it. here is what Ameriprise person said

"I recognize the market has been increasing at a rapid pace, but overall it probably is unsustainable. If you extrapolate the return of the S&P 500 to year end, it would be up extreme double digits. There is no guarantee it will continue at such a rapid growth or have a pull back, but I am making this recommendation to be cautious. So overall I think the best way to get the money invested is to dollar cost average in over the next five months. There is no guarantee this strategy is the best especially in a rising market, but overall dollar cost averaging does provide opportunity to take advantage of down times in the market if they occur."

and then she gave me a list of funds and a 5 month schedule of how they would invest 1k at a time.
May 7, 2013 2:25 PM - CGar

randi...what she says is very true. We will know with 20/20 hindsight at the end of the year if it is the right strategy but, in reality, I cannot argue with it.

Let me know what funds she recommended if you want. At 35 you should be pretty aggressively invested but that really doesn't point you to growth over value funds. You should have, AT LEAST, 10% overseas and more likely 20-40% with at least 10% in Emerging Markets.

All my IRA money is invested in a large number of dividen/interest producing stocks and funds. In fact, over the past 6-9 months, this has been the best performing strategy in the market but these things change fast. That said, my portfolio will never outperform whn the market is strong (except this recent period) but will always outperform54 when the market weakens.

From Old City Coffee....

Guatemala El Injertal
We are so pleased to bring this Rainforest Alliance certified varietal to you. Shade grown El Injertal is grown underneath a canopy of indigenous trees that protect the coffee crops from pest and other growing dangers. In exchange for this protection, the trees providing the canopy are left intact so that local permaculture remains able to flourish, encouraging the development of mammal and bird populations dependent on the tall tree growth. Shade growing in Guatemala is part of a larger culture of agroforestry that in time will truly shape the future of the coffee industry in addition to other agricultural products grown in tropical areas such as the coffee belt.

Just finished reading The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides.
Saw the film countless times and it really is a masterful interpretation of the book in that it manages to capture most of the emotional nuances for which books are usually at a distinct advantage.

In this case, I think Sophia Coppola bridged that gap with her respect for the underlying mystery of the book and about adolescent females in particular (at least from the perspective of adolescent males).
That, and a perfect soundtrack which I listen to quite often.

The result is a perfect fusion of literature, film and music. A very rare trifecta.

Admire the principle / spirit of the co-op in BH but unless it's a super wealthy building it's probably not a good use of shareholder funds.

Is he neutered yet?
Dogs with their cojones emit strange and perplexing odors, including a musky scent.
This might also be part of the reason for your initial hesitation with the new dog,
smell is our most primal sense. There is no sub-station for the Olfactory (1st cranial nerve) nerve,
it goes directly into our higher cortex. The other sensory nerves stop off on the way to our higher cortical centers with time to be modified in their intensity.

That book was great, but perhaps cuz the time I read it when I was majoring in psychology and was into that kind shit. I saw the movie years later and kinda fell asleep it was kinda boring and tried too hard to be exactly like the book.

I'm totally interested in this whole three women who were held captive in Cleveland for 10 years... that is insane. How does one not get opportunities in 10 years not to escape?! I mean, I DO know, but it's still mind boggling. This is why I do not hook up with strangers like most homo's do. You never know what could happen! I'd rather be sexless and be BFF's with my right hand and a jar of vaseline (store brand) than being stuck in a dungeon for 10 years! Yeah. He was neutered at like 6 months? They got him at 8. He has the tiniest dick on a dog I have EVER seen, it's almost sad :( It smalled than my pinky finger and I've never seen it get hard. Not that I am looking out for that gross!! But Duke used to get hard when he saw certain dogs and various things and daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. He was hung, even after he got his balls cut off (he got them cut off late though, like 7 or so).

I just feel bad for a dog that never gets a hardon, and getting dogs nuts cut so early means they are never going to gain ANY muscle tone. Plus they seem to have issues that dogs with balls don't. Not that I am saying not to get dogs neutered and spayed, duh it's important. But there are down sides to getting your balls cut off.

What I worry about most is that if you get a dog's balls cut off too soon, they are FOREVER stuck in a pre-pubescent stage (for males anyway). I think the best time to get dogs neutered are 6-8 for big dogs and 10-12 for small dogs. Vets and scientists might disagree with me, but whatever.

...yeah, I'm following that strange story of the kidnapped girls. Can't imagine the misery they lived through for so many years with those freak brothers. This is the type of story that in ancient times would have been turned into a fable like Hansel and Gretel throwing that old witch in an oven. Not sure if this is in the "too early to tell" category, but damning if it is - "But he was cleared following a polygraph test. The man in turn insisted that FBI agents look into Ariel Castro, a man who seemed to attract tumult and disorder throughout his adult life.

“They did not follow up on that,” Giannini says. The Cleveland Division of the FBI offered no comment on the matter when contacted by Scene."

"Mark Sanford won the election. Is it too late for the South to secede again?"

I have to admit, I was surprised by his comeback.
Running away has never been a notable sign of leadership ability.

...what is up with Argentina by the way?
The new Pope is Argentinian,
the new Queen of the Netherlands is Argentinian (Maxima)
and Governor Sanford runs away from his political career and family to tango with his Argentinian mistress!

Lech had some business dealings with argentinians, i think, and several trips down there. I think, uhm, he did not enjoy them.

Bugging out a little tonight. About to go to sleep, but watching too many youtube videos thinking of my friend C.A. who killed herself in 2001. I knew so much more about that shit but never said anything. I mean, there wasn't anything to say really, but after she died everyone got shut out immediately. It was likt wtf? I had a lot of good information, or things people might like want to know, but I guess not. It was definitely a suicide, but I've been walking around with the reason WHY she she did it forever now. Her dad was a cop (hey squirm this if you can!) I don't know, so depressing. :( I'm only thinking about this cuz my grandfather's birthday was May 1st and my Bio Mother's birthday is May 9th.

Shit-filled life.

I have dead people. My parents, my brother, my grandparents, my 2nd father/family friend, my friends who died of AIDS.... I think we all have dead people, rob. You need a therapist.

Partridge, he's either asleep or having sex.

Besides, I'm extended family.

Perhaps, but more likely not. I need some CLARITY AND SELF-AWARENESS about some issues. Not convoluted jibber jabber that costs 100 dollars per 50 minutes of just 'talking'.

I am halfway there. I am working it out.

ill work on it tomorrow morning.

That's exactly what therapy can help with...clarity and self-awareness, and perspective. If you know so much about it then you'd know that and that it's not jibber-jabber unless you are just jibber-jabbering your way through it. It's your nickel, and you have insurance.
