I wish there were still areas of farmland in Brooklyn.

Where is everyone this morning?

If there were still farms, there would be people protesting the smell of cow manure, and and the sound of roosters. They would have problems with tractors, too. You think the coffee bruhaha was bad??

You have a hard enough time herding cats, Partridge. What would you do with cows?

I would set up my easel and paint the scenes en plein air. The farmer would bring me cheese and fresh bread from his wife's oven. Life would be simpler.

Well, for sure, in my "Bucolic Brooklyn", I would not be eating craft pickles favored with sriracha for breakfast. I would not be proof reading legal documents against my builder (which I barely understand) on a beautiful Saturday morning.

If I were living on a farm, I would paint and draw, too. And garden. One day, I'd like to have a little garden again.

Do what my friend manda did in san diego. A few blocks from her house she took over a patch of greenery in the middle of the road and turned it into her garden. She grows all kinds of stuff. We would fill up jugs with water and take them over in a shopping cart every few days. It was great too because whenever I went wandering out on my own to explore, I did get lost a lot, but eventually i'd see the pink flamingo in her garden and be able to find my way back home because of it. Ugh late start this morning.. gonna walk the dog and then head out to the ocean.

This spring I am filling up the ceramic pots with flowers. I have hydrangea in a couple of pots and the are coming alive again. I used to work with a lot of people in Kansas City, MO who grew up on farms. My boss's husband worked for KPMG but also had a herd of hogs. And areas just outside of KC are full of wheat farms. It is hard work.

That's the idea of a community garden. Of course the individual plots are often taken quickly, as soon as the garden is open for membership. But there's water on site and it can be a wonderful outdoor space to enjoy and help out once in a while. Membership in the garden I belong to costs $10/year! You do have to be an active member for a while before you can get your own plot, but often you can grow something in someone else's plot and there are common growing areas.

Quick update from cat owner/neighbor. Kitten-Rits (her actual name, not Rat) is doing great! Upon her return home, she was a bit needy and affectionate, but she has already reverted back to her typical aloof ways.

The guilt-ridden and concerned roommate sent him a text demanding that he bring the cat to a vet for a professional cleaning. She doesn't think she should be subjected to a ceiling crawling dirty cat.

My request for visitation rights was granted without argument.

Just got home. GREAT day on the beach! Except um, is there a grody old man cruising section of brighton beach cuz I wound up on and I was mortified by the stuff I saw. I picked up my things and went towards coney island about 1/4 of a mile and wound up on a beach with like 10 dogs <3. And also, um. Two beanpole moonfaces with a dog on the beach called LYKA (they kept saying it's name OVER AND OVER AND OVER. the dog ran over to me, lots of dogs did and I tried to play with it and they screamed at it to come back to them) Saying NO NO NO COME HERE LYKA. ugh. Everyone else just let their dogs frollick with me! FYI: Lyka was the name of the Russian Space Dog. :-/ Who Tori Amos used to talk about a LOT. they were the ONLY two moonfaces I saw all day though (one had a scarf!) and they promptly left.

I explored the inner neighborhoods of Brighton Beach and Coney Island. Um. Yeah, I don't think I want to move to either of those neighborhoods. Both were total shitholes. Coney was ghetto and hood, but no one even batted an eyelash at me walking around, but the inner part of Brighton... Uh... I got death stares, stinkeye, and talked to in Russian and I think they were curse words. Fuck that. The beaches are awesome, but I prefer Park Slope. Park Slope might have a gazillion moonfaces, but it's WAY more diverse than coney island and brighton beach. I don't give a shit about diversity, but I don't want to live in the hood, and I especially don't want to feel like I am living in another country where people are xenophobic and I stick out like a sore thumb.

Got a TON of sun today. I think im darker than the bottom of Snappy's foot!

I hope that last comment didnt come across as over the line. Black people, okay, maybe not ALL, but everyone ive ever seen... their feet (the bottom part) is way lighter than the rest of them. But still darker than a moonface. That's all I was really trying to say.

Perhaps I should have just said I look like Beyonce today.

they are torn up, but i put it back together to read again, but im bringing to work to shred and also call them because they said 4 checks were included in this and they were and said they previously mailed me 2 checks, which I never got. So I want to call them about this. and then shred it all.

My friend Krazey invited himself over tonight. For a while he was turning religious it seemed, but I think he got out of that phase really fast. Which is good. Nothing against religious people, but sometimes they can be a bit much.

Trust me, it was really stupid to even entertain the idea of using those credit card checks to begin with. If I have to move in three months I'll figure it out. Things usually always work out. I'd rather wind up where I'll wind up with no debt on that card than owing like 3000 dollars on that card. I feel like the banks right now are TOTALLY praying on me, waiting for me to totally make one big blunder then WHAMMO im screwed, well, the jokes on them! it aint happening!

None of those neighborhoods are ghetto. Well my friend Kristy actually lives in Sunnyside, has for the last 4 or 5 years. She calls it ghetto, but it's not hootrat ghetto. Too many people call a neighborhood ghetto if they see a black or brown face and not enough overpriced wine bars and the other shit people with too much extra money to burn kinda establishments.

I would totally do sunset park. Plus it's on the R line, right?

Plus all of my fish are Manhattanites who I brought to live in Park Slope. They are too uppity to be moving from here. What kind of pet owner would I be to bring them from Manhattan, let them live in Park Slope for a few months, then bring them to the hood as teenagers! I blessed that Bettas are not the kinds of fish that actually have to be part of a school though.

ERgh, doing laundry right now, but the laundry room was free. Always a blessing. Beautiful gorgeous days around this time are the best time to do laundry, cuz no one else is doing it.

Well, I did phase I of my art binge today in Washington DC. But didn't sleep so well last night so I didn't do the running around I wanted to do. I went to the Phillips Collection, had a nice lunch and saw an exhibition of Jackson Pollack and two other abstract impressionist painters. I love Dupont Circle. I walked around a little and went to a great secondhand bookstore. Tomorrow is more ambitious.

#89
April 27, 2013 11:30 PM - Donatella
Hi Snappy, it depends if the new color is lighter or darker. This is the issue I have been struggling with. The bad color job was too dark. You can "bleach" it a lighter color but that really does a number on your hair. Or you can live with it and just color your hair the right color as it comes in. In my case that is what she is doing and next time she will do some highlights on the darker part to blend it. I also got a haircut, cutting off a lot of the too dark hair.

I'm imagining you as Ronald McDonald :oD. At the very least, you can get a rinse, which isn't permanent, but will darken it until it is safe to dye again... You'd have to keep applying the rinse periodically, though...

Sorry, I'm a salon girl for my color. No idea. I'd just go to the drugstore and look at all the non-permanent rinses and pick one...
April 27, 2013 11:45 PM - Donatella

No color corrector, Snappy. Get a semi permanent color like Nice n' easy which is the color you want and do your hair with that. You don't want to be piling more harsh chemicals. Your hair is pretty short so it will grow out fast. Try that.
Oh, I see Cobble said the same thing. Yeah, try that. You don't want to be dying your hair over and over, it will damage it.
April 27, 2013 11:46 PM - Cobble B. Hiller
Very bold to use permanent at home! I'm too scaredy...so I always use semi-perm. You could try a semi perm darker color over it, but the red may pop back out as the semi-perm color washes off. Easy enough to re color though. And then chop off the reddish as your hair grows out.
April 27, 2013 11:49 PM - pepper

I wouldn't. Too intense chemical wise. I would use the the semi until hair grows out, and start over. The semi-perm is just easier to deal with, in my experience.

April 27, 2013 11:55 PM - pepper
I would say no, since, as Cobble says, to get it red in the first place, it was probably a pretty harsh dye. Do the semi-permanent. Hopefully it's at least a nice auburn color. When it grows out a bit, you can cut it off! Luckily you are sporting that new chic short do now...
April 27, 2013 11:56 PM - Cobble B. Hiller

whoops...meant "to darken/cover the red"
April 28, 2013 12:11 AM - Cobble B. Hiller
I think you can go dark brown. I might even aim for an ash color to neutralize the red a bit.

April 28, 2013 12:12 AM - Cobble B. Hiller
Yeah, the no ammonia stuff, that's it.
April 28, 2013 12:14 AM - pepper
Well, since your natural hair color is black, i don't think you risk "magic marker head" if you pick black. Likely, it will turn out as a light black/dark brown... probably with some reddish highlights, though :)
April 28, 2013 12:15 AM - InsertSnappyNameHere
i think what effed things up is that my natural hair color isn't a true deep black. it's always had brownish undertones and i think this dye turned out more bright than i wanted because of that :-( i could live with reddish highlights, just don't want this sideshow bob look :-(
April 28, 2013 12:16 AM - pepper
I'm sorry Snappy, but every time you say you look like sideshow bob, I laugh out loud. for real.
April 28, 2013 12:17 AM - InsertSnappyNameHere
i'm sure i'll laugh too...after it's fixed!
April 28, 2013 12:17 AM - pepper
Honestly, I think either black or dark brown will work. One will be a bit lighter than the other, obviously...
April 28, 2013 12:18 AM - Cobble B. Hiller
Yes, my dark brown always had a lot of red to it, so I go ashy with color or my hair gets brassy red as the dye color fades, which I think is yucky on me.
April 28, 2013 12:19 AM - pepper
Make sure you take a selfie for posterity...
April 28, 2013 12:19 AM - InsertSnappyNameHere
want a real laugh? while letting the dye sit for the 20 minutes (thank God i didn't do the full 30 they suggested) i sat on the couch. when i got in the shower to rinse, i heard a "pling" noise. a penny that was apparently on the couch stuck to my thigh and fell off in the shower. so i bathed with a penny :-)

Snappy, before I forget, go to

www.esalon.com

You don't have to buy anything, but you will go through an exercise to find out the right color for you in the first place and it will give you some ideas on the right color to fix it. I forgot about this. If nothing else, it will give you a sense of how all these colors are named so that you know what you are getting.

Night.

Without going into a long color theory explanation, the color we call brown is made by combining red and green.

Ash (in hair color) = green but don't be afraid of ash. It will NOT make your hair green, it will neutralize it to a brown that no longer reads red.

I would use a permanent hair color with your problem, Snappy. The semi-permanent color will quickly fade back to the Bozo hair. Get this one:
http://www.gianteagle.com/71249253076.aspx

L'Oreal 5A Medium Ash Brown. It will reduce the red. Keep it on the full time to help with coverage.

Unless your scalp has become irritated from the dye job yesterday, you should be able to re-do it today without any problem.

Snaps, my hair is (was, before the grey took over) really dark, dark brown, not black, too. I've had the same problem, going too red, and stick to the brown shades myself. MM, I love the frame house with the porch on Parkside from this week's Past and Present. It did however, make me want to scream to see its current condition. Commercial signage in Brooklyn should been better regulated and enforced. Flatbush Avenue, around Church to Albemarle, is a sin.

April 28, 2013 10:01 AM - Partridge
Yes, Coney Island Ave and Church Ave are bad, bad, bad, too! But it pains me more on Flatbush as it is set against the beautiful Reformed Church and Eramsus Hall.
April 28, 2013 10:05 AM - Cobble B. Hiller
Yes, that intersection/area is pretty awful. But it has the buildings and some aspects of attractiveness.

CI A and Church are just butt-ugly. I really don't see any hope for them. And the construction that goes on over there is just mystifyingly horrible 3rd-world-cinderblock-hideous.

Will someone please tell me why The Farm on Adderly gets the rave reviews it does? I really find anything but the burgers to be sort of meh. I've only ever had one (the 1st) meal there that I would say was truly perfect. The menu is very limited, some of the combinations are odd and unappealing, and two of the 5 times I've eaten there, I've had to send my order back to the kitchen.

How was the Cape? I think our trip up there is scuttled for the moment.
April 28, 2013 10:29 AM - dibs
Nice trip but too early...rather chilly and not many restaurants open all week. Should be going this week instead. More places open May 1. But, despite one day of constant rain, got the yards cleaned up. Ready for mulching when I go up Memorial Day week.

Oh, not sure if I mentioned but I want to plant a row of lavendar outside the front picket fence. Found a place in Seattle that sells 4" pots for $4.00 each but they aren't very responsive. Yesterday in Bucks, i stopped at Carousel Lavendar Farm to ask the guy about planting it and, low and behold, he's also selling 4" pots for $4.00. he gave me a deal on 40 of them....$140 and no tax!!! April 28, 2013 11:46 AM - Cobble B. Hiller
It may not grow as fast if it's too shady. I had a lavender plant, and I put it in what I thought was a sunny enough location. 2 years...not much action. I moved it to the other side of the yard where there was somewhat more sun...voila! Grew like crazy.

Oh, right. I was going to say something about The Farm as well. I went once. It was ok. Nothing mind-blowing. And as Cobble said, some of the combinations were really weird and off-putting. "slit my eyeballs open with razor blades."

A step above scratching your eyes out with walnuts.

I'm back from dinner out. Two glasses of wine and I want to sleep. Was a long week. I start my weekend now. whoopee!
April 28, 2013 8:06 PM - pepper
I walked by your almost store on atlantic today, Partridge. For rent sign in the window...
April 28, 2013 8:09 PM - Partridge
:( a little sad, but not a lot. I'm happy where I am. Need a bit more business.
April 28, 2013 8:11 PM - pepper
Any ideas how to do that?
April 28, 2013 8:14 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
get a store cat. watch the people flock in and shop till they drop!
April 28, 2013 8:16 PM - Partridge
Yes, and I have begun implementation.

I made an important ID today of a sign maker who does very creative work. He has done great work around Brooklyn and Manhattan that I have often admired. I figured out who he is and I made contact. That and a few other things should help.
April 28, 2013 8:18 PM - Partridge
Haha!!! Allergies, Snappy. People will run out with reactions. I've got 2 on the shelf beckoning. That's it for cats!
April 28, 2013 8:20 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
aww phooey. well, i would suggest one of those hairless cats, but let's face it. those suckers are uglier than sin.

Sounds good, Part. Weren't you trying to establish a web presence at some point?
April 28, 2013 8:23 PM - Partridge
I keep a dog friendly store. Many visitors daily. Treats behind the counter keeps dogs pulling their owners to me. Marketing ploy, but I love the poochies.
April 28, 2013 8:23 PM - Partridge
Yes, in the works too.
April 28, 2013 8:25 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
i think web would be great for you.

I have some web presence. It is not new to me. I have had 3 e-commerce sites. They are not necessarily a good thing.
April 28, 2013 8:33 PM - InsertSnappyNameHere
no hits on them?
Edited at April 28, 2013 8:33 PM
April 28, 2013 8:35 PM - rf
Or is it just too much of a hassle to ship?
April 28, 2013 8:45 PM - Partridge
I'm no longer interested in e-commerce. I cannot compete. Margins need to be low to be competitive on branded merch. Only proprietary merch works for better margins. That is my jewelry. I have no interest in putting my designs out there to be knocked off.

I would need to hire a full-time person at 40K annually to maintain site, fill orders and market. return would need to be 100k gross to break even. 200k to be worth it really. That's a lot of merch. A whole other store's worth. Then I need more space.... Get what I'm saying?

What I would like to do is create product for web sales. Separate from my store. Exclusive, unique product. I have an idea I have wanted to pursue, but always time/financing issue.

CG is busy w/ house guests but asked me to post a request for input on best route by car from his place -say Hicks & Atlantic- to JFK, & an estimate of how long it would take for arrival at JFK by 2:15 on a weekday. Thanks.
April 28, 2013 9:03 PM - Partridge
The mystery product requires a good local printer. Silkscreen, offset, not sure how it will be done, but I need to develop a relationship with someone close and artistic that will allow me to see proofs and work with me on tweaking and design. I don't have any leads on this printer. Anyone know one?

BQE and follow the signs. I think it is BQE to Grand Central to Van Wyck. 30 minutes without traffic.
April 28, 2013 9:06 PM - pepper
After many misadventures, near tears and a ton of anxiety trying the various highway routes, I am a big fan of straight down Atlantic. It may take a bit longer than if the highways are clear, but when they are not, oooooo watch out. Can take 30 min or 2 hours, or anything in between. Straight down Atlantic from my place is 45 min, without fail. Add 5 min from his place.
April 28, 2013 9:07 PM - rf
BQE to LIE to Van Wyck. Grand Central is way out of the way.
Edited at April 28, 2013 9:07 PM
April 28, 2013 9:09 PM - Partridge
Yes, rf. That's it. LIE, not Grand Central. Allow 1 hour and will arrive early or 10 minutes late at worst.
April 28, 2013 9:12 PM - Partridge
Arkady, ask CGar if he can help me out with my printer!
April 28, 2013 9:18 PM - Arkady
Vicarious thanks! (I doubt he'll phone again, Partridge. Ask him tomorrow or email him.) MM might know one.

I had to come to NYC last minute for work tomorrow so checked out some open houses for fun. Scoping things out as my employer decides whether they can expand here. I am an over-planner and like to go over different possibilities even if they never happen.

Conclusions:
- I have traditional tastes. Think I knew that. Like the finishes in a lot of new apartments but floorplans often stupid.
- I have expensive tastes. Eyes bigger than wallet :-(
- BK real estate hype is real (corroborated by one that just sold over ask in my bldg for highest ever price here)
- May have to look outside my core fav areas or get over my reno-phobia fast if I wanted something of a good size.

I did totally love one apt though - pre-war that needed work.

Google maps says 25 minutes, 31 minutes in current (right now) traffic.

Night-night, Snapadelic!
April 28, 2013 9:31 PM - etson
Because it's a 400 sq ft studio, Part. Bought as a pied a terre after I left.
OK for temporary stays but not as a permanent full time home.
April 28, 2013 9:36 PM - Partridge
Got it. So where is the pre-war you liked? Upper West?
April 28, 2013 9:40 PM - etson
No, just a couple of blocks away here. Just looked in PS today.
Thinking about lots of scenarios - neighborhood, type of place, how much to stretch on cost - as it's all speculative right now, so will check out some Manhattan places eventually as well.
Don't even know if I will even have a decision to make so may as well have fun considering the possibilities.

Body snatchers are coming for me. Good night everyone!
April 28, 2013 9:56 PM - etson
Night, Partridge.
Planning to make it on 9th but have not got ticket yet. Will confirm this week.
I am off to bed as well

These are from a book called Disorder in the American Courts and are things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and published by court reporters that had the torment of staying calm while the exchanges were taking place.

ATTORNEY: What was the first thing your husband said to you that morning?
WITNESS: He said, 'Where am I, Cathy?'
ATTORNEY: And why did that upset you?
WITNESS: My name is Susan!
_______________________________
ATTORNEY: What gear were you in at the moment of the impact?
WITNESS: Gucci sweats and Reeboks.
____________________________________________
ATTORNEY: Are you sexually active?
WITNESS: No, I just lie there.
____________________________________________
ATTORNEY: What is your date of birth?
WITNESS: July 18th.
ATTORNEY: What year?
WITNESS: Every year.
_____________________________________
ATTORNEY: How old is your son, the one living with you?
WITNESS: Thirty-eight or thirty-five, I can't remember which.
ATTORNEY: How long has he lived with you?
WITNESS: Forty-five years.
_________________________________
ATTORNEY: This myasthenia gravis, does it affect your memory at all?
WITNESS: Yes.
ATTORNEY: And in what ways does it affect your memory?
WITNESS: I forget..
ATTORNEY: You forget? Can you give us an example of something you forgot?
___________________________________________
ATTORNEY: Now doctor, isn't it true that when a person dies in his sleep, he doesn't know about it until the next morning?
WITNESS: Did you actually pass the bar exam?
____________________________________

ATTORNEY: The youngest son, the 20-year-old, how old is he?
WITNESS: He's 20, much like your IQ.
___________________________________________
ATTORNEY: Were you present when your picture was taken?
WITNESS: Are you shitting me?
_________________________________________
ATTORNEY: So the date of conception (of the baby) was August 8th?
WITNESS: Yes.
ATTORNEY: And what were you doing at that time?
WITNESS: Getting laid
____________________________________________

ATTORNEY: She had three children , right?
WITNESS: Yes.
ATTORNEY: How many were boys?
WITNESS: None.
ATTORNEY: Were there any girls?
WITNESS: Your Honor, I think I need a different attorney. Can I get a new attorney?
____________________________________________
ATTORNEY: How was your first marriage terminated?
WITNESS: By death..
ATTORNEY: And by whose death was it terminated?
WITNESS: Take a guess.
___________________________________________

ATTORNEY: Can you describe the individual?
WITNESS: He was about medium height and had a beard
ATTORNEY: Was this a male or a female?
WITNESS: Unless the Circus was in town I'm going with male.
_____________________________________
ATTORNEY: Is your appearance here this morning pursuant to a deposition notice which I sent to your attorney?
WITNESS: No, this is how I dress when I go to work.
______________________________________
ATTORNEY: Doctor , how many of your autopsies have you performed on dead people?
WITNESS: All of them. The live ones put up too much of a fight.
_________________________________________
ATTORNEY: ALL your responses MUST be oral, OK? What school did you go to?
WITNESS: Oral...
_________________________________________
ATTORNEY: Do you recall the time that you examined the body?
WITNESS: The autopsy started around 8:30 PM
ATTORNEY: And Mr. Denton was dead at the time?
WITNESS: If not, he was by the time I finished.
____________________________________________
ATTORNEY: Are you qualified to give a urine sample?
WITNESS: Are you qualified to ask that question?

______________________________________
And last:

ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing?
WITNESS: No..
ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor?
WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.
ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless?
WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law.

Hahahaha. Those were great, six. I especially liked the ones where the attorney asked the dumb question and the witness called them out on it... The last one was particularly good...

I would need to hire a full-time person at 40K annually to maintain site, fill orders and market.

Pish-Posh! Just hire a moonface intern who just moved to NYC and pay them nothing. They LOVE working for free and blogging about living in new BROOOOOOOOOOOOOKLYN! (barf)

Im not leaving Park Slope anytime soon., I've decided even if the rent goes I am I still staying. I'll make it work. I don't like gettting shooed out of neighborhoods because I cant afford it. Screw that, I will learn how to afford it.

Doing something with my fish tanks tomorrow night, I will take pics. Gonna look good. :)

I had another Sunday night meeting with my fish tonight about where they want to live and what we gonna do... I asked them them where they want to live, but this time I told revealed our financials and don't be absurd and say something stupid like Hawaii.

Pinky Dinky II - park slope
Dudley - park slope
Ben - park slope
Charlie - park slope

so um. yeah, we aint going no where.
